Celebrating fairgrounds improvementsBy Brian MulherindaiLy newS StaFF wRiteR
While some might notice the nature trails and oth-ers might notice gutters and downspouts on the barns, the people who spend the most time at the Mason County Fairgrounds – kids and their animals – will probably appreciate most that there is no dust.
Smooth walking and no dust are just a couple of the benefits of the various proj-ects celebrated wth a rib-bon-cutting ceremony un-der sunny skies outside the commercial exhibits build-ing.
Other improvements in-clude a nature trail, a golf-cart path to Walmart, a planned gazebo near the last barn toward the camp-ground and a goat mountain that will stay year-round.
County Board Chairman Chuck Lange opened the event, touting the many improvements, including handicap-accessible roads and buildings.
“These improvements pro-mote an atmosphere that is conducive to putting people at ease when they come to receive the many services provided by the fair board,” Lange said.
He noted that the proj-ect was completed without asking taxpayers for a new millage, the 23rd such proj-ect at the fairgrounds. He thanked all associated with the project, especially the anonymous donors who
have contributed a quarter of a million dollars to the im-provement project.
Kirk Myers, president of the Western Michigan Fair Association board, thanked Marcia Hansen for being the sparkplug that kept him go-ing when things got tough and Heather Tykoski for her help with the $20,000 grant from the department of agri-culture.
Hansen was the target of much praise for her work, particularly with State Rep. Ray Franz (R-Onekama) and State Sen. Goeff Hansen (R-Hart).
“I think you have me on speed dial,” Sen. Hansen quipped to Marcia during his remarks.
Sen. Hansen compli-mented Myers and Hansen on their vision for the fair-
grounds and the successful improvements.
“I wish all of our roads could look this good,” Han-sen said. “But we’ll get there.”
Franz also complimented Marcia Hansen on her hard work and said the “green shirts,” or fair board mem-bers, should be proud of what they accomplished.
He said the improvements
are a great example of what a community effort behind a community asset can accom-plish to bring visitors and growth.
“That’s what makes com-munities strong and vi-brant,” Franz said. “And a great place to live – we live where other people want to vacation – how great is that?”
After the ribbon cutting, Franz presented Marcia Han-sen with an 18-inch section of the ribbon.
She said the kind words and gestures moved her to tears, but she couldn’t take all the credit.
“The thing that I am is the ambassador for all the won-derful people who do all the work,” Hansen said.
Myers said it was nice to see it all come together.
“It makes you feel like it was worthwhile,” Myers said. “It’s been four to five years coming and there were a number of times over the years I was ready to throw in the towel. I’m glad it’s com-ing to completion.”

The water main was shut down and water service was stopped to One Lud-ington Place, Crosswinds Condominiums (on the Buttersville Peninsula with service through under-water pipes), Waterfront Park, Ludington Municipal Marina, Harbor View Mari-na, Sandals Salon Spa, and Snyder’s Shoreline Inn as repairs were being made.
During the afternoon re-pairs, there was also low water pressure west of Robert Street along Lud-ington Avenue.
“We had to shut the city’s main line down, iso-late the (damage) and put
it out,” Plamondon said.Afterward water might
still have been cloudy for some residents for a peri-od of time, but it was safe,
Five Utility Maintenance employees worked on the repairs, completed them by 4 p.m., Plamondon said. The employees still had

asphalt from atop the main at South Robert Street into the air. The road will now have to be repaired.
The contractor was able to get the cable in while the road was torn up, re-turning Monday to con-tinue the line closer to the marina.
Restroom facilities at Waterfront Park were closed due to a lack of wa-ter.
“We apologize for any in-convenience this may have caused and sincerely ap-preciate your patience in this matter,” the city stat-ed.
South Robert Street at the Filer Street intersec-tion remains closed due to road repairs that now have to be made.
“The city would like to thank those city employ-ees who worked nonstop to repair this water main, especially from the Utility Maintenance Department led by Superintendent Dar-ryll Plamondon,” the city stated Thursday evening.

GRAYLING, Mich. (AP) — About 5,000 soldiers from several states will be at Camp Grayling in northern Michigan for more than two weeks of training.
The program for Nation-al Guard soldiers is called Exportable Combat Train-ing Capability.
Col. Eric Randall, Camp Grayling garrison com-mander, tells WPBN-WTOM that it’s taken several years to plan the program, which begins Saturday and runs through July 27. The training is designed to pre-pare soldiers for possible combat.
The program has been done elsewhere in the past. Camp Grayling now has the program on its schedule every summer until 2018.
Camp Grayling covers 230 square miles, primar-ily in Crawford County. The camp has hired about
60 community members to help with drills.

Masonic Lodge to perform free
Child ID program At the fair Saturday
On Saturday, Aug. 9, The Pere Marquette Masonic Lodge No. 299 will be providing a free child iden-tidication program at the Mason County Fairgrounds.
The program will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fairgrounds, as part of the fair.
Each child that goes through the process will receive dental impres-sions as well as a CD containing a photo, video, digital fingerprints and their vital information. Par-ents or guardians of children who participate must be present and fill out a permission slip for their child to receive the service.
Children who have already had
the identification service done are encouraged to repeat the process every two years to keep the infor-mation in the packets current.
The Michigan Child Identification Program provides the family with everything needed for the Amber Alert System.
Since 2005, more than 65,000 Michigan children have taken ad-vantage of this valuable service. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children considers the Michigan Child Identification Program to be the most compre-hensive of its kind.
For questions or more informa-tion about the event, you may call 269-612-7424 or consult the Michi-gan Child ID website at www.michi-ganchildid.org.
The Stampede 5K run/walk is again part of this year’s fair, and takes place Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8:30 a.m.
The Stampede is orga-nized by Ed Sanders and the Mason County Central Cross Country team, and will be run in memory of Leanna Wolf Geers. The course will begin near the grandstands, take runners around the track, wind through the fairgrounds, then finish back on the track.
“It’s a super flat course,” Sanders said. “It will be easy for families, and may-be some of the campers at the fairgrounds.”
He’s hoping for a good turnout for this first-time event. Participants who sign up before Aug. 2, are guaranteed a race T-shirt with the $20 fee (the fee is $15 for participants who don’t want a t-shirt). After July 20 the entrance fee is $22 for everyone. There is an opportunity to regis-ter at the fairgrounds the morning of the race at 7:30 a.m.
Trophies will be awarded for various groups.
Entry forms are available online at www.masoncoun-tyfairgrounds.com. For more information contact Ed Sanders at (231) 233-3373.

The mule pull will again be a part of this year’s fair.
The Northern Champion Mule Pull will take place Thursday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. in the grand-stands, and there is no charge for spectators.
Mule pulls are similar to horse pulls, but for mules the weight of the pull is based on the weight of the team. After pulling a load equal to the weight of the team, more weight is added in 1,000-pound increments. The team pulling the greatest dis-tance on the last pull wins.
