Carol is a good-looking 40 year old woman, happily married, a mother of 2 adorable children, and she loves her work as an in-terior decorator. She is 5’5”, eats low-fat, follows the low glycemic index and exer-cises on a daily basis. She is well dressed, blond with pretty blue eyes……and lately just can’t stand herself! She has, over the last 5 years, slowly but surely gained well over 10 pounds without understanding why. She hasn’t changed her habits. If anything, she has eaten less and exercised more, and still the scale keeps going up! She’s beside herself and starting to get de-pressed.

She has been to her doctor who told her there was nothing wrong. All blood-work came back normal, including her thyroid test. Her doctor suggested that she might benefit from seeing a nutritionist. Devas-tated, she came in to see me for her first appointment, saying there must be some-thing wrong with her body. Maybe her metabolism is down? Can it be measured? Can I help her?

We measured her metabolic rate, and found that, yes, it was below where it should be. It was low not because of a medical malfunction but paradoxically because she has been under-eating and over-exercising. In other words, her body has not been getting enough calories on a daily basis.

Carol was rather surprised to learn that eating 1700 calories/day wasn’t enough and that her body has compensated by re-ducing her metabolic rate by 300 calories. This means that if she can get her meta-bolic rate up to normal again, she can eat 300 calories more per day without gaining weight!

When I asked her about her energy level, she admitted that it’s rather low and that there is room for improvement. The same goes for hunger, but she thought that there was nothing wrong with being a little hungry. After all, doesn’t eating less make us live longer?

Yes, we know that restricting calories can

extend animal life, but we don’t know about humans yet. Some humans can un-der-eat without it affecting their metabo-lism. For many of us, however, the same thing that happened to Carol is true, i.e., under-eating lowers our metabolic rate, and makes us store fat. Unfortunately there is more to it. When the body is under-fed, it has to take the calories from some-

where. An underfed body strips down its own protein stores, its own lean mass, causing accelerated aging. So in Carol’s case she was stripping down her lean mass and pre-aging her body at a double rate. Another effect of this process is that she was compromising her immune system.

Carol and I worked together to correct her metabolic rate and subsequently, slowly but surely, she lost her excess weight. She stopped her pre-aging process and now feels like a new, energized and positive person. She corrected her diet at a good time in her life, since had she waited longer she would have entered pre-menopause which would have put her underfed body at risk for gaining a lot more weight.

In fact, Carol’s story is very typical. I see the same picture over and over again in my practice, whether I work with an anorexic teenager or a middle-aged overweight woman or man. Clients come, hoping to have lost weight, but in fact having lost muscle mass and gained fat by under-eat-ing, and as a result having gradually dam-aged their metabolism

The scale and caliper measurements won’t accurately describe the whole pic-ture. What you need to know is your daily metabolic rate and most importantly, your protein turnover. In other words, is your body breaking down its own muscle tissue as fuel? I use Comprehensive Metabolic Testing and sophisticated Body Composi-tion Analysis to help determine how to best fuel your body to prevent accelerated aging and how to optimize fat-burning ca-pacity. With these tools we can develop a plan to enable you to soon be on the way to a healthier future.

Nutrition Paradox: Eating Less May Not Result In Weight Loss

Who Benefits?

Do you frequently think about dieting? Do you fear fat and weight gain? Do you obsess about food and your body?Do you crave sweets?Do you feel stuck and can’t lose weight? Do you have to exercise to feel good?Do you have a hard time listening to and separating signals of hunger and satiety?

If you answered “yes” to two or more questions you’ll benefit fromnutritional counseling with Annika Kahm.

“I was so surprised to find out that I wasn’t eating enough. If it wasn’t for the tests, I wouldn’t have believed it. Now, I’m eating more without gaining weight, and I’m actually losing fat-weight.”

“I never realized how low energy I was till you had me eating right and I noticed how much more I could both eat and do in a day.”

By Michael E. Doyle, MD

By 1914, years of research had lead to great discoveries in the area of thyroid treatment. That year, Eugene Hertoghe, was invited to teach New York’s top physicians how to diagnose all stages of hypothyroidism by carefully listening to their patients and looking for physi-cal signs of low thyroid. No thyroid test had yet been developed… and none was needed. Hertoghe also taught that the low thyroid condition could be re-versed by simply giving patients enough natural thyroid extract to restore their health. Dr. Hertoghe’s work was so im-pressive that it is credited with founding the specialty of endocrinology in Ameri-ca. So, by the early 20th century, hypo-thyroidism was a treatable condition. But things soon began to change. Over the following decades, a parade of laboratory tests were developed to help doctors make the diagnosis of hypothy-roidism. Each new test was touted as the “right” way to diagnose low thyroid … until it was discarded and replaced by the next test. Unfortunately, these tests began to replace the art of medi-cine as doctors were taught to rely on the latest test and to ignore their clini-cal judgment. People with classic signs of low thyroid function began to suffer once again. Hypothyroid symptoms such as fatigue, low body temperature, depression, hair loss, weight gain, mus-cle pains and more were left untreated because the latest test said that the pa-tient’s thyroid was OK. Soon synthetic thyroid treatments were also developed and were used to replace the natural extracts that had worked so well in the past. Unfortu-nately, new medications often didn’t work as well as the older “natural” medications. This might be because the natural thyroid extracts have always contained all four thyroid hormones (T1, T2, T3, and T4) while the synthetic treat-ment contains only one (T4). Some doc-tors such as Broda Barnes, MD refused to follow this “modern” approach and continued to rely on their examination and judgment and continued to use the “old-fashioned” natural thyroid ex-

tracts. By the 1950’s, William Jefferies, MD, was at Harvard working with adrenal hormones. Jefferies quickly recognized that cortisol (a natural form of corti-sone), was so important that a person would quickly die without it. He also noted that even minor deficiencies of this hormone could cause many ill-nesses such as allergies, chronic fatigue

and autoimmune disease. Dr. Jeffer-ies realized that small doses of cortisol could reverse many of these conditions. Jefferies’ most important contribution may have been the concept that this hormone is only harmful when patients take too much, and that small doses can actually improve overall health when needed.

Remarkably, in the 1970’s Dr. Eugene Hertoghe’s grandson, Dr. Jacques Her-toghe, flew from Europe to study Dr. Barnes’ use of natural thyroid treat-ment. Hertoghe was looking for an effective treatment for his patients in Belgium and he was so impressed by the effectiveness of the natural thyroid extract that he began using it for all his patients. And Jacques Hertoghe was

not alone. The superiority of the old-fashioned thyroid treatments eventu-ally became so clear that the president the Royal Thyroid Academy in London concluded that “the treatment of hypo-thyroidism is about to come full circle” by going back to the old fashioned ap-proach that used a natural combination of thyroid hormones and did not rely

solely on test results. In the 1980’s, building on the work of his predecessors, Dr. J. Hertoghe was using combinations of hormonal therapies for many of his patients. This often included hormones for menopausal women. Dr. J. Hertoghe stated that estrogen and progesterone should only be used in their natural forms because the synthetic variants had dangerous side effects. This was at the time when most doctors were using synthetic progesterone (progestin) and horse estrogens to protect menopausal women from illnesses. About 20 years later, Dr. Hertoghe was proven right when large studies that showed that synthetic sex hormones made many women seriously ill. Sadly, the response of many doctors has been to stop using hormones. But recent evidence continues to support the safety of natural hormones. Re-cently, of over 50,000 European women were studied using natural (“bio-identi-cal”) estrogen plus either a synthetic progestin or human progesterone. The women who took the artificial hormone had a 40% increase in the occurrence of breast cancer, while the women on bio-identical progesterone had breast can-cer rates 10% below women who took nothing at all (and 50% lower than those taking synthetic progestin). It appears that while replacing menopausal hor-mones is not a panacea, women suffer-ing from menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, poor sleep, bone thinning, etc. can find relief. And that the best and safest way appears to be using real hormones instead of the usual synthet-ics. In the end, a century of experience and scientific evidence shows that nat-ural hormones can play a key role in restoring health for women and men. With a healthy balance of hormones combined with sound nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, great improvements in health are possible.

For most women, finding out that you are pregnant is a time of extreme joy and happiness. But, once the first 6 weeks of bliss pass, for many women the next 34 weeks become a time of pain, nausea and sleepless nights as their bodies go through changes physically and psychologi-cally However, just because you are pregnant, it does not mean that you need to suffer! And, after delivery, you should be able to focus on the health of your beautiful newborn and not the post-partum aches, pains and postural strains your body has to endure. So, what is a pregnant mom or the mother of a newborn to do? Well, more and more pregnant and post-partum wom-en are choosing the non-invasive approach of chiropractic care to get through their pregnancy pain-free and raise their families in a natural way!

Why Chiropractic Care? Every thought you have ever had, every move-ment you have ever made and every sensation you have ever experienced has been dependent on the nerve messages flowing freely throughout your body. Since our brain and nervous system control the function of every cell, tissue, and or-gan of our bodies (and our unborn baby’s body) it is vitally important for our nervous system to operate at 100% for optimal health. Our spine protects our spinal cord and when a spinal bone shifts out of normal alignment it may produce abnormal motion and damaging pressure on spinal nerves. This condition is known as verte-bral subluxation and if present, it may interrupt the vital nerve flow within our bodies and to our baby. Chiropractic care diagnoses and corrects subluxations which interfere with normal body function. Many subluxations do not cause im-mediate pain and you may not even realize they are present, but if they are left uncorrected the body’s capacity for health can deteriorate.

The Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy Unfortunately, subluxations are an inherent part of preg-nancy due to the hormonal and postural changes that occur in the spine and pelvis which affect the asso-ciated joints, nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Realignment of the spine and pelvis can be achieved through chiropractic care which focuses on gentle adjustments either with the doctor’s hands or with special adjusting instru-ments to remove the subluxations and allow the joints of the spine to function properly.

Studies have shown that this approach helps al-leviate the vast majority of common neuromus-culoskeletal symptoms experienced by pregnant women: low back pain and sciatica, headaches, neck, shoulder and arm pain or tingling, carpal tunnel syndrome, pubic pain or separation, and pain in the ribcage. Further studies have shown that chiropractic care reduces nausea and vom-iting, decreases pain during labor and delivery, and reduces mean labor time. Other benefits include a reduced number of breach presenta-tions, reduced cesarean section rates, less labor intervention, and a quicker recovery.

1. Low back Pain Roughly one half of all mothers-to-be suffer from low back pain and doctors now agree that pregnancy related low back pain is associated with a condition called sacroiliac joint dysfunc-tion (often referred to by chiropractors as SI subluxation). A subluxation is a misalignment of a joint and it creates irritation to the nerves and tissues in the surrounding area. The sac-roiliac joints are created by the joining of the sacrum (the triangular bone that sits above our tailbone) and the bones that are on either side of the sacrum known as the inominate bones (the area many people consider the hips). Many hormones in-crease rapidly dur-ing pregnancy and some of them relax the muscles, ligaments, and joints in the body. This allows the pelvis to open during delivery so that the baby’s head and shoulders can pass through the birth canal. But, this relaxation combined with weight gain, postural changes and stretching of the stomach muscles also dis-turbs the proper alignment of the spine and pel-vis producing subluxations during pregnancy. It is these factors that increase the stress on the joints, nerves, and discs of the low back and pel-vis and create pain.

2. Headaches Due to the changes in a pregnant woman’s posture, extra stress to the spine and nervous system often occurs in the neck and shoulders. Subluxations of the neck are often the cause of neck pain and headaches during pregnancy and can be easily corrected with chiropractic care.

3. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome causes painful tingling, burning and numbness into the wrist and hand and it occurs in approximately 20% of all preg-nancies. Subluxation of the wrist bones often occurs during pregnancy because of hormonal changes and swelling of the wrist and hands and Chiropractic adjustments can help.

4. Mid-back and Rib Pain Pain in the midback that radiates into the rib-cage is often due to subluxations that cause the nerves between the ribs to get irritated. Chiro-practic adjustments remove the subluxations to decrease the pain.

5. A Breech Baby The “Webster Breech Turning Technique” is a non-invasive and gentle chiropractic technique that is highly successful in helping mothers with breech babies. The technique has been featured on the The Learning Channel’s “A Baby Story”, Mothering Magazine, and Midwifery Today. The way it works is the following: The uterus is attached to the bones of the pelvis by ligaments. As long as the bones are in the right position and are moving properly, the ligaments should provide equal and balanced support for the uterus. If the pelvis is misaligned or subluxated, the ligaments become torqued and can cause a condition known as “in-utero constraint”. If the uterus is constrained as birth approaches, the baby is prevented from getting into the best pos-sible position for birth and may end up breech. Chiropractors correct the subluxations of the pelvis and decrease spasms in specific muscles and ligaments that attach the uterus to the pelvic bones to help the baby turn.

By this time you are prob-ably wondering “How do Chiropractors correct these subluxations?” Chiroprac-tors correct subluxations by performing chiropractic ad-justments- a gentle proce-dure where the Chiroprac-tor applies light pressure to the joints of the spine to restore normal motion and alignment, decrease stress on the nervous system, and decrease pain and muscle spasm. Chiropractors who specialize in maternity care will often have special adjusting tables for the pregnant mother so that she can lie on her stomach without any pressure (they love these tables!) so that her spine can be examined.

Chiropractors are the only doctors who are li-censed to diagnose and correct subluxations and there are currently only 10 Chiropractic Physi-cians in Connecticut who have completed a 3 year post-doctorate degree to specialize in ma-ternity and pediatric care. There are many ben-efits to chiropractic care, two of the most im-portant are that chiropractic offers a drug-free approach to pain reduction and studies show that expectant mothers who receive chiropractic care are less likely to suffer from the dreaded “backlabor” and they have reduced labor time.

Remember, pregnancy should be a time full of

Chiropractic Care is a Family Affair: The Benefits ofChiropractic Care For Pregnant Moms and Their Families

Success -Healthy Pregnancy and Delivery!

A neighbor of mine told me about Dr. Sloves during my pregnancy because I was having severe lower back pain. In addition, my baby was in the breech presentation and I did not want a C-section. I had tried physical therapy before but it really did not help much at all. I started treatment with Dr. Sloves and af-ter just 1 visit my baby was no longer breech and within a few visits my pain was gone. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Sloves and chiropractic care during pregnancy!

-Sandy M.

Chiropractic care was a godsend during my pregnancy! I experienced severe lower back and neck pain and was unable to walk or hold my toddler. I was recommended to Dr. Sloves from my OB-GYN. I felt better after my first adjustment and continued chiro-practic care during my pregnancy. I would highly recommend Dr. Sloves to anyone dur-ing their pregnancy.

- Amy G.

“My daughter had ear infections constantly from the time she was an infant. She had taken over 30 antibiotics in 3 years and failed her hearing test. Since I took her to Dr. Sloves, she has not had another ear in-fection or taken another antibiotic and her hearing is completely normal”.

- Heather G.

My daughter, Nicole, suffered terribly from allergies. She had allergic reactions in the form of hives to dairy, wheat, rice, soy and egg. She also tested positive to peanut al-lergies on skin tests. I suffered with severe eczema with dry, cracked and bleeding skin on my hands and I had a lifetime of eczema in various locations all over my body. With Dr. Joachim’s BioSET treatments both of our lives have been changed forever! My daughter can now eat whatever she wants, she has gained weight and she now sleeps through the night. The changes were imme-diately apparent following the specific Bio-SET treatments for those foods. My hands are now back to normal. My rings fit my fin-gers again and I no longer scratch my hands to bleed. I have no eczema outbreaks any-where on my body since the BioSET treat-ments! Thanks Dr. J.!

health and happiness! Don’t waste another min-ute suffering from pain or discomfort during your pregnancy. Work with a local Chiropractic Physician who has specialized training in ma-ternity care so that you can experience the qual-ity of life you and your unborn child deserve!

Chiropractic Care for Newborns and Children Chiropractic care during pregnancy does in fact decrease a mother’s low-back pain and reduces labor time by 50-60% and specific chiropractic adjustments keep the pelvis in proper alignment, making delivery quicker and easier, but babies still face a pretty rough ride through the birth canal. According to infant health expert Abraham Towbin, M.D., “The birth process, even under natural and con-trolled conditions, is potentially traumatic.”

To understand what occurs during the birth pro-cess, it is important to first consider the devel-opment of the fetus. The first visible structure in the growing embryo is the notochord, which becomes the brain and spinal cord. To protect these vital structures, the skull forms around the brain and the spinal bones form around the spi-nal cord. The skull, although often thought of as 1 bone, is actually made up of 22 bones. During the normal birth process, several of these cra-nial bones need to overlap in a specific manner and the baby’s head has to go through a series of specific motions in order to navigate through the mother’s bony pelvis and birth canal for de-livery. Research shows that in a normal, average vaginal delivery, there may be between 40 to 70 pounds of force exerted on a newborn’s head and neck during delivery, So, even a normal de-

livery without any intervention, can potentially strain the delicate spinal joints in the baby’s neck, resulting in subluxations and nerve dys-function. In fact, some medical research studies concluded that up to 80 to 90% of all babies have strains in these regions and this may ac-tually account for many common symptoms found in infants and children. Prominent medi-cal researchers have stated that frequent spitting up, irritability of the stomach and colon, colic, difficulty with feeding and attachment, sleep-ing problems, torticollis, asthma, ear infections, nose and throat infections, generalized lowered resistance to infections, and learning or behav-ioral problems can all be associated with stress to the neck during the birth process.

Ideally, babies should be checked and adjusted if necessary as soon as possible after birth to correct for spinal subluxations. Chiropractic adjustments for babies and children differ sig-nificantly from those of adults. There are even Chiropractic Physicians who specialize in treat-ing pregnant mothers, infants, children and families. Often the Chiropractor will use light fingertip pressure or a gentle tapping instru-ment on the baby’s back or neck. Even medical doctors have noted how, even with the lightest pressure of the index finger to perform an ad-justment, the infant’s clinical picture normal-ized. It is important to note that 65% of neu-rological development occurs in a child’s first year. It is therefore imperative to ensure that your baby has every opportunity to maximize their nerve function during this critical period in their development.

In addition to the physical distress of the birth process, infants will endure general knocks and falls as they grow and develop which can also

result in nerve dysfunction. Common physical causes for vertebral subluxations during the first year may include sleeping in a car seat with inadequate support of the head, neck and spine, falls off of the bed or changing table, or falls when learning to walk. As your child grows, sporting activities can induce physical trauma as can prolonged or repetitive postures such as playing computer games, watching TV or car-rying backpacks. According to The Journal of Paediatrics, parents sent their children to al-ternative healthcare providers (with chiroprac-tors cited as the most frequently consulted) for many health complaints, the most common of which were symptoms of respiratory tract dys-function, ear/nose/throat dysfunction, allergies, skin conditions, gastrointestinal complaints and prevention.

Now more than ever before, parents are search-ing for proactive lifestyle habits that will nur-ture their children’s health. Chiropractic aware-ness is shifting from being an intervention not only for pain-relief, but for a more proactive, wellness-oriented healthcare choice. Dr. Can-dice Pert (a recognized leader in the field of psychoneuroimmunology) credits chiropractic as having a “significant effect on maximizing immunity via maintenance of a healthy ner-vous system” and Dr. Ronald Pero, PhD, Chief of Cancer Prevention Research at New York’s Preventative Medicine Institute determined that chiropractic patients had a 200% greater im-mune-competence than people who had no chi-ropractic care. Pero, who has published more than 160 papers in peer-reviewed journals, firmly believes that, “Chiropractic care opti-mizes whatever genetic abilities an individual has to resist disease.”

Isn’t Plastic Surgery just forcelebrities or vain people? No, far from it. Plastic surgery is a medical specialty designed to correct the structural or functional problems that arise from trauma, cancer, birth defects, pregnan-cy, and aging. Each person’s body reacts differently to these situations, and there is no reason to have to live with a severe deformity caused by any of these condi-tions. In many cases, your health insur-

ance will cover reconstructive surgery to restore your body’s natural form and to regain the self-confidence to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What is a “Mommy Makeover?” In many cases, pregnancy and nursing take their toll on a woman’s body. We selflessly carry another hu-man being to term and nourish him or her during infancy. Often, the skin of the abdomen loses elasticity, contin-ues to sag after the pregnancy is over, and develops stretch marks that don’t go away. Sometimes the skin of the breasts loses its elasticity as well, with permanent stretch marks and drooping of the breasts. The nipples are areolae are enlarged and displaced. A “mommy makeover” is a popular procedure that combines a tummy tuck with a breast lift to restore the tight contours of the pre-pregnancy body. A tummy tuck re-moves excess abdominal skin, stretch marks, and fat. It tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall and results in a flatter abdominal profile. A breast lift removes excess skin and stretch marks to recreate a more youthful, round, and perky breast. Not all stretch marks will be removed - those below the belly but-ton and closest to the nipple are taken away consistently.

How Long do the Results Last? A mommy makeover is not a substi-tute for a healthy lifestyle, including a good diet and exercise. The results are technically permanent but may be sig-nificantly diminished with major fluctua-tions in weight. Women who are plan-ning a substantial weight loss or future pregnancies are advised to postpone surgery. Women who smoke should quit all nicotine products for one full month before surgery to reduce the risks of surgery.

What if I would prefer fuller or smaller breasts? A breast lift can be performed at the same time as breast reduction or augmentation with an implant with no

additional scarring. In the past, breast reduction or lift surgery could only be performed with a large “anchor” scar consisting of vertical and horizontal limbs. Savvy patients know that Dr Kishi-nevsky performs these surgeries with a small vertical only, “lollipop” scar, resulting in rounder, perkier breasts with a fuller cleavage. Breast reduction surgery relieves long-standing back and shoulder pain by removing excess breast tissue but still achieving a beau-tifully-shaped, lifted breast. Augmenta-tion can be safely performed with sa-line or silicone implants to increase the volume of the breasts with the most natural texture and shape. During your consultation, you will have the chance to examine and feel both silicone and saline implants and to choose the style, size, and shape you feel the most com-fortable with.

Which procedures help a patient to look younger or fresher for today’s competitive job market?

Depending on a person’s needs, an eyelid lift or a face and neck lift go a long way towards erasing some of the more severe effects of aging. As the eyes are often described as “the windows to the soul,” removing a bit of excess, droop-ing skin and the loose fat that makes up the “bags”, whether above or below the eyes, often takes years off a man or wom-an’s appearance. Dark discoloration can be removed as well, all without leaving a visible scar. A face and neck lift is de-signed to clean up the jowls and excess skin around the neck, recreating a clean, tight jawline. The scars are hidden with-in the hairline, so only your hairdresser will know. The result is a natural, rested appearance, without looking fake or “done.” The results often last for more than ten years without a touch-up.

What if I prefer a less invasive approach? Injectable treatments have virtu-ally no downtime and are effective in smoothing many of the lines that appear on the face with aging. Botox is a simple

and easy treatment that eliminates hori-zontal forehead lines, vertical “scowl” lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and even vertical lines around the lips. The results last for 3-4 months, and the injections are so quick and painless, they can be done during your lunch break. A soft tissue filler, like Restylane or Juvederm can be used to restore volume to the face. They are ef-fective in smoothing the folds around the mouth, restoring a youthful fullness to lips that have thinned with age, or to erase lines around the chin. The only side effects are injection site swelling or bruis-ing that may last 2-3 days.

What are my options for recon-struction if I will be having a mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer?

In this day and age, there are so many options for women undergoing treat-ment for breast cancer to look and feel their best, there is no reason that any woman should be left with a defect or an asymmetry. If a woman prefers recon-struction with her own tissues, the fat from the abdomen can be used to make a new breast with a TRAM flap. If a wom-an prefers a quicker recovery or a larger breast size, reconstruction with a saline or silicone implant may be an option. A new technique that has been receiving a lot of attention lately is fat transfer for breast reconstruction. Liposuction is per-formed on the abdomen or thighs and the fat is saved and used to make a new breast or to fill a lumpectomy defect. Fat transfer is simpler and has a quicker recovery time than traditional breast reconstruction and can be done several times to achieve a larger breast size. Also, if you have been considering breast reduction or breast lift surgery and you will be undergoing lumpectomy, your breast surgeon can work with your plas-tic surgeon to perform these procedures together. Our office will let you know if your insurance will cover breast reduc-tion surgery.

We offer programs for individuals from 18months to adult that give many opportuni-ties to participate in the wonderful sport of gymnastics. Our program, with classes designed for both boys and girls, is separated into two main areas; preschool gymnastics and rec-reational after school gymnastics. We are also well known for our tumbling classes, adult classes, and competitive teams. Our preschool classes emphasize coordination and motor skill development where chil-dren will learn to control and use their body movements. As children progress through the gymnastics program, they will be work-ing on skills that are appropriate to their age and current skill level. We teach and re-inforce the importance of strong gymnas-tics basics at all levels so that each gymnast can be the best they can be while having fun in the process. In all areas of our program participants will have the opportunity to enjoy every

Olympic event (Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise, Rings, Pommel Horse and Parallel Bars). They can jump on one of 2 “tumble trak” tumbling trampolines, our in-ground trampoline or jump into one of the largest loose foam landing pits in Con-necticut. They can also enjoy the excite-ment of our large rock climbing wall. In ad-dition to learning how to hop, jump, land, balance, swing and tumble our program also presents opportunities for children to learn many valuable life skills. Within the structure of our gymnastics classes children will learn the importance of sharing, taking turns, voicing opinions, listening, goal set-ting, patience, respect, and a willingness to try new things. Most importantly, our number one goal is to promote self-esteem in our students! That is why Next Dimen-sion has teamed up with the industry’s leading Child Development Specialist Dr. Robyn Silverman to en-hance each child’s learning experience. Each month we focus on different pow-er words that help teach students to share, discov-er, and reflect on various character development ideas. Not only were our class programs a great success this year, but this was a banner year for our com-petitive team programs as well. We produced many individual state and re-gional champions ranging from Prep-Optional to lev-els 4 through 9. We had 21 individual state champions with many of those gym-nasts winning more than one event! Our girls and

boys teams definitely shined in 2009! Have your very own shining star celebrate their birthday with our fun and energetic staff here at Next Dimension Gymnastics. We offer the most awesome birthday par-ties where the fun and excitement never ends! During the 1 ½ hour long exclusive party everyone will enjoy jumping, swing-ing, climbing, and have and overall great time. Fairfield County Woman MARCH/APRIL

Are you looking for more energy and more vitality…and doubtful that diet pills, a new gym routine or new vegan diets will change anything? Do you see yourself as the midlife equivalent of your high school past? Does your poor body image remain etched in your mind?

I’d like to share with you my own experi-ence in reinventing how I related to health and wellbeing in my “midlife”, so perhaps you can see something new for yourself.

My 5 foot ten inch frame has always seemed more naturally built for basketball, or cross country running but I found a sport 30 years after those dreadful high school phys ed classes that is absolutely perfect for me at this point in my life.

Ladies…I am keeping my day job, for sure, but the sport of rowing (crew) is one which has grabbed me by surprise and has trig-gered a new view on my ability to choose “health”.

I made a decision that it was “time” to re-invent my life, including health, so I could manage my weight and have fun! In es-sence, I had to re-program how I saw health

fitting into my life.

Was it just the desire to loose weight and get in my “skinny jeans”? Not really, but that was a start.

Approaching the big 5-oh this year, I found that my latent desire for physical competi-tion was brewing like a tempest tea pot and that the creative demands of my marketing consultancy needed more than just sleep to really thrive. Yes, not only loose weight but regain a sense of energy and sustained interest in being more physically active.

Does that sound like you? I decided to challenge this in myself and so began a more wellness-focused jour-ney that would introduce me to authors and writers like Eckhart Tolle to Christiane Northrup and Nora Ephron. (In fact, I be-came so interested in how wellness hap-pens that I became certified as a wellness coach…but that’s another story!)

Here’s how I found inspiration and the freedom to enter into a new conversation. I hope it helps you!

1) DISCOVERY: Exploration is key to reveal-ing new possibilities in our lives. What I dis-covered began on a learn to row vacation I took with my husband up to Craftsbury Vermont, where the world-reknown out-door center started over fifty years ago. I thought it would be a great way to spend time with my husband, who had been row-ing locally for many years. Since world class athletes also train and practice at this cen-ter, I completely lowered my expectations as to what I could achieve in a week’s time

there. And, because I was open to the expe-rience of being a midlife novice, I was much more relaxed and actually learned much more than if I had pressured myself into performing. I really had nothing to prove! Except that I wanted to really have fun.

2) INTENTION: Just making an intention is the first step to actually creating new reali-ties in our lives. So, When I returned from this vacation, I immediately made an inten-tion to continue having fun through rowing. So, I decided to join a local rowing club, and then began a learn to row program within three months of my Craftsbury learn to row vacation. And, I learned to row with other women who were local – many who were, and still are, practicing on the calm early morning waters of the Norwalk River.

Usually I rowed in a “quad” where four women row together – each with two oars. I frequently rowed in the lead seat, called the stroke seat. All the other rowers are following the stroke so you need to focus and concentrate. You also need to relax. Sounds like a conflict doesn’t it?!

3) RELAX: I don’t think you can appreci-ate how important recovery is in our lives today unless you start rowing. The recov-ery allows your body to relax and the boat “runs” underneath you, effortlessly. Of course, that all depends on your ability to technically row. However, my 20-year long yoga practice came in handy because in order to do well with rowing you must bal-ance “drive” with “recovery”. These two

opposites work well with me, because I use yoga breathing on the recovery, and find that this breathing mechanism simply reduces the feeling of stress in my body. Even better, wellness experts do recom-mend exercise as an evidence-based stress-reducer!

Skinny jeans aside, there’s so much more to health for me today. That’s why I also incor-porated my personal point of view into my professional work with a focus on“Reinventing Health, One Conversation At-a-Time”.

We’d love to know how you’ve reinvented Health. Email me at [email protected]. You’re invited to share your story and join our on-line radio shows!

P.S. Sustaining weight loss is the midlife equivalent of moving mud uphill. But, youcan make small changes everyday that will be rewarding for you.

Our Money, Ourselves:Financial and Emotional Empowerment in Divorce

Divorce can be overwhelming and threaten to turn your life upside down, emotionally and finan-cially. Whether you are contemplating it, in the process, or through to the other side, you may feel as if your life is spiraling out of control.

One of the challenges facing a woman on her divorce journey is maintaining a balance between honoring and accepting the emotional roller coaster of ups and downs and that of stepping into the role of “manager.” She must uncouple financially, physically, and emotionally. She must take charge of the divorce process by becoming knowledgeable. One of the most empowering things you she can do during this time is to gain control over her money. When you think about it, although set in a legal framework, divorce centers around two main issues: money and children. Not taking care of your money is directly linked to anxiety, stress and low self-esteem. Divorce is an opportunity to take ownership over all aspects of yourself, including your money – from taxes to debt to credit to titling and repositioning of assets. Despite the initial intimidation, it is both rewarding and empowering.

Easier said than done, you may be thinking. After all, there are so many complicated money topics and financial products seem to grow continually more convoluted. You will only be able to make sound financial decisions from a grounded, supported emotional place. It is helpful to sign up for financial education classes or hire a money coach who can provide answers to your questions in a setting you trust, without trying to sell you anything. Elizabeth and Caroline can support you in both a group setting and on an individual basis.

A generation ago in the 1970s, a group of women published a book called Our Bodies, Ourselves, which rallied women around the notion that our bodies are something to be proud of and which we need to make an effort to understand. In this new millennium we must approach the topic of money with the same vigor. Now is the time for women to empower themselves by taking pride in their money and ownership of the issues that surround it. Now is the time to ask yourself: if you don’t take control of your money, who will?

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE COUNTY WOMAN NEWSPAPERAdvertising And Promotion During A RecessionThe National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) confirmed on December 1, 2008, that the U.S. economy has been in a recession since December 2007. Many economists believe the cur‐ rent recession will be the worst since the recession of 1981‐82. Times are rough, but that doesn’t mean you should lower your advertising budget; you actually should maintain or raise it, or just advertise smarter.

A recent study by McGraw‐Hill Research showed that companies that maintained or increased their advertising during the 1981–82 recession, had gains in sales in the short‐run as well as the long‐run. The McGraw‐Hill Research study analyzed 600 companies from 1980 to 1985, and found those that advertised aggressively throughout the recession had sales 256% higher than companies who cut back on advertising.

Consumers will continue to buy health care services, financial services, prescriptions, food, en‐tertainment, professional services and every other type of product or service they have always purchased. During a recession, consumers are more discretionary about how they spend their hard earned dollars. They spend more time educating themselves about whom the best provider of a product or service might be and how to find them.

Educational and informative advertising is most effective during tough times and now is the best time to get your message in front of a discerning group of buyers.

Contact us at 203-600-4999 or 877-812-8693 or at FCWoman.JRNL@gmailcom to learn more about how to effectively tell your story and enhance your brand during this economic downturn.

Growing up I always had a pas-sion for sports. I later created an interest in the business field as well while taking numerous business classes in high school. When it came time for me to decide what to study in college I was fortunate enough to come across an area that combined both of my fields of interest. While attending Springfield College I majored in Sports Man-agement and minored in Business Management. Coinciding with my studies I was also a member of the Springfield College field hockey team, where I was named captain my senior year. I credit my entire

college experience, both in the classroom and on the field, for my hard work ethic and drive to continue to progress in my profession. Currently I am the Ticket Operations Manager for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. My job is to make sure that our fans’ ticketing processes run as smooth as possible from the start of their order until they enter into the arena. I handle all ticket processing from full season ticket plans, to mini ticket packages, to group outings. Teenagers who exhibit the personality traits of a leader are more likely to suc-ceed in college and at their first job, stud-ies show. A recent research paper pro-duced by St. John’s University concludes that “college students and early career workers can benefit from continual lead-ership development in order to prepare for the business world.” The study, sponsored by Entrepreneur magazine and conducted by St. John’s business professors Larry W. Boone and Monica S. Peborde, shows the impor-tance of learning effective lead-ership skills such as establishing credibility, managing time, being proactive, empowering others to act, and networking.Graduates of Generation.Next, a leadership training program for teenagers, report progress toward mastering all of these qualities and more after attending the three-day immersion course developed by Dale Carnegie Training. Generation.Next focuses on giv-ing high school students the skills they need to tackle the real world of college and beyond, helping teens develop leadership habits that will last a lifetime. The pro-gram focuses on the Five Drivers of Personal Success – Building Self-confidence, Enhancing Com-munication Skills, Interpersonal Skill Development, Teamwork and Leadership Skills, and Effective At-titude Management. Thousands of shy, uncertain young people have entered the Generation.Next program and emerged with a new attitude of confidence and eagerness to take on challenges and reach for more meaningful goals. “I feel like I un-derstand how to deal with people better now,” said Alex N., a re-cent graduate. He described the course as “life-changing” and said it had inspired him to develop better re-lationships with his teachers, earn better grades, worry less and become a leader at his school.Samantha K., another recent gradu-ate, described her transition from a self-conscious, fearful wallflower into a confident public speaker after participat-ing in Generation.Next. “This class has been amazing. My self-confidence has skyrocketed!” she exclaimed after deliv-ering a speech on the final day of class.

“Three days ago I wouldn’t have been caught dead in front of so many people, but I volunteered to go first.” The ability to communicate clearly and with confidence ranks among the most important attributes of young people who succeed in college and beyond, ac-cording to the St. John’s study. “Inspir-ing leaders are recognized as enthusi-astic, energetic and positive about the future,” the study says. “Effective lead-ers are able to communicate their vision in ways that encourage others to join

them. Their emotions are contagious. …If a leader cannot display passion for his or her cause, why should anyone else?” The highly trained instructors from Dale Carnegie use role-playing and real-life scenarios to reinforce classroom lessons, creating a fun and energetic program designed to help teens build self-confidence, strengthen people skills, enhance communication skills, de-velop leadership skills and control worry and stress. Instructors lead the teens

through a series of interactive exercises designed to stretch their comfort zones and break through barriers related to low self-esteem and shyness. Graduates consistently report progress toward becoming more highly focused on their goals; more persuasive commu-nicators; better decision makers, espe-cially when faced with difficult choices; better prepared for future challenges, from applying to college to interviewing for jobs; able to confront problems and challenges in a more positive way; and

more confident in speaking up in class or delivering talks. After a recent course, graduates rated their progress anonymously as follows: It raised their self-confidence levels an average 54%; communications skills, 66%; human relations skills, 49%; leadership ability; 38 percent; and ability to control stress and worry, 44%. Several parents said they had seen their sons and daughters grow before their eyes during the intensive three-day

program. During follow-up interviews a year after his son and daughter both took the course, one father said both had benefited enormously. “Kaitlin was a good student but shy,” her father said. “After taking the teen course, she began taking leadership roles in many different clubs and activi-ties. She became much more of a leader, more open and willing to talk to people. For Brian, the goal was to help him be-come more focused and organized. Since last summer his grades have picked up

significantly and he is much bet-ter at balancing his social life with sports, and at setting and reach-ing goals. I’ve seen incredible im-provement.” Being proactive and being well-organized are two of the most important personal attributes of successful young people, the St. John’s study shows. “College students and early ca-reer workers will enhance their reputations as leaders by ask-ing questions, taking action and achieving results desired by the organization – not by waiting for someone else to define their job for them,” the study says about being proactive. Regarding orga-nizational skills, the study says, “A leader who is personally efficient and has good time management skills will be able to project these skills to subordinates, helping to create a more efficient organiza-tion. It is important for college stu-dents and early career workers to develop their time management skills for long-term personal and organizational success.” Dale Carnegie trainer Caryn Vin-cent said parents consistently re-port that their children are more focused and more willing to go out of their comfort zone and try new things after taking the course.

“They have a new sense of self, a new drive and energy to excel,” she said. The world becomes more complex, competitive and demanding with each passing year. Teens must balance school, work and relationships while planning for their future and working toward achieving their dreams. Generation.Next is a proven program that helps teens de-velop the confidence and skills they need to cope with the pressure and stress ad-olescents face.

Presented by Adele R. Jacobs, Esq.

In our busy day to day lives, we don’t stop to think that disaster could strike, or at least we hope it will not. How-ever, if you are one of the unfortunate people that gets that call…“your house is on fire”, or wakes up one morning to a basement full of water from a leaking or burst pipe, you need to know what to do. Now the “It won’t happen to me”, becomes “Now what do I do?” You call your insurance company, thinking that you have plenty of insurance, and believ-ing that they will help you, and get it all done. However, often it is just not that easy or simple.

Protect yourself before you are confronted with a disaster

When you have finished reading this, re-view your homeowner’s insurance poli-cy, to see if you have purchased replace-ment cost coverage. Replacement cost coverage will compensate you for the cost of replacing your belongings, and your home. Many policies only provide for actual cash value (acv) coverage, which only compensates you for the de-preciated value of your belongings, and your house. For example, if you have a big screen t.v. that you purchased last year for $1000, and it was damaged or destroyed, the acv may only be $500 now, and that is all that the insurance company is obligated to pay you. If you had replacement cost coverage, then the insurance company would be obli-gated to pay you what it will cost to re-place the same T.V. in today’s dollars, if you purchase another television. If pos-

sible, before any disaster strikes, photo-graphically document all of the valuables in your home, and keep a file of receipts for major purchases. They may come in handy one day.

Second, check to see what the provisions are in your insurance policy for contin-gencies, such as not being able to live in your home while it is being repaired or rebuilt, and how, or if, the policy allows for reimbursement for your living ex-penses. That becomes very important, particularly if you are forced to live in a long term rental home.

third, ensure that you have adequate insurance coverage, by requesting that the company offer you the maximum amount of coverage for your posses-sions. It is not until you try to begin re-placing your things, that you realize how valuable they were, or how expensive it is to replace them.

If it happens to you...

In the event that disaster strikes, what you don’t know, and may not be told, is that you have choices, and you have control. It is very overwhelming, emo-tionally and physically, to be confronted with a major disaster, so it is easy to just “let the insurance company handle it”. although that is the easy way to start, it often becomes the complicated, and ex-tremely challenging path to the end. Un-til you are faced with the circumstance, you cannot imagine the enormity of it all.

If you have an incident such as a fire or flood in your home, take as many pho-tographs as possible of the damage, as well as of every closet, cabinet, and shelf. When a representative of the in-surance company arrives, get all of his or her information, and make certain that they tell you what all of your rights are as a homeowner, under the terms

of your insurance policy. the insurance companies have “preferred vendors”, i.e. people that they use exclusively, and often you are not told that you may ac-tually have a choice of who to hire to do any remediation work, cleaning, laun-dry, etc. Do your homework, and find out who the people are that they are recommending, how many times they have used them, and what their refer-ences are. This can all be accomplished in a very short period of time, and will not delay the process. In addition, im-mediately after your loss, there will most likely be several public adjusters at your door offering their services. Public ad-justers function as a middle “man” be-tween you and the insurance company, and they can be very helpful in certain circumstances. However, as in every profession, there are good ones and not such good ones, so do your homework on them as well, before making any com-mittments.

It is very important to make certain that everything that was wet from either fire or flood is handled with care. These items should be exposed to the air, and properly dried, if possible, or immediate-ly removed from the house, so that you do not experience any mold issues. You cannot leave it solely to any remedia-tion people to do the job of drying out your home, to carefully pack your things, and to remove any things that need to be discarded. They must be supervised at all times. You should also keep de-tailed lists of your belongings. Getting assistance from your friends and family would be extremely helpful throughout this process. Although the remediation people, the dry cleaners, and any other contractors hired by the insurance com-pany, will tell you that they are very ex-perienced, and have done “this” many times, you need to maintain control over the process. The remediation people may not pack your things up in an orga-nized way. If they are left unsupervised,

the belongings that you would like to potentially take with you to a rental house, may end up in storage, and vice versa. The dry cleaners may wash things that should be dry cleaned, and dry clean things that should be washed (like ski pants, jackets, etc.). Unfortunately, it is very likely that there are things that may get lost. You also should carefully inspect all of the things that come back from be-ing cleaned, to determine whether they are acceptable, as you do not need to accept them. You should smell your clothes when they come back, to make certain that they have no scent of either smoke, mildew or chemicals, and if they do, you need to notify the cleaners, as well as the insurance company.

You should not worry about being a micro-manager. You have paid a lot of money in premiums for years, and the insurance company has reaped the ben-efits of your money. You want to make certain that you obtain every penny to which you are entitled. Get everything in writing as you go along, regarding what they will reimburse you for. Many policies use the terminology “reasonable expenses”, and you need to have the in-surance company clarify, in writing, what “reasonable” is. Their estimation of “reasonable” may very well be different from yours. As the process goes along, you should keep careful track of every receipt, every contract, every business card, and every photograph. It sounds daunting, but it will save you aggrava-tion in the end.

Keep your wits about you, and remem-ber to ask a lot of questions, require an-swers, and stand up for your rights.

You researched the company, polished your resume, practiced your pitch, pre-pared stellar Power Point slides, put on your best suit, arrived early, distributed quality printed docs, and talked, talked, talked about how wonderful you and your company are and what you can do for the prospect. You noticed the prospect has a signed Mets baseball; you pat yourself on the back for weaving your love of the game into the conversation. You feel you aced the meeting, start to pull out the contract and are shocked when the client says “Thank you, we’ll be in touch.” You know the phone won’t be ringing.

What Went Wrong? Your focus was off. You pitched the client. A successful sales presentation is not an advertise-ment delivered in person—it’s a conver-sation all about them, helping to draw out their problems and wants so you can address them. Ideally, the client should be talking 80% of the time.

LISten FIrSt. Get your customers talk-ing, and you’ll learn the best ways to meet their needs. Active listening is the most valuable tool in a successful salesperson’s toolbox, including subtle signals like body language. A good way to bring everyone’s voice into the room at the beginning of a meeting is to ask each person to give a one minute introduction including tenure with the company, their title and their role in this project. This information will help you identify the influencers and the decision makers and to appropriately direct your questions in the meeting. At this stage, simply share a 10 second overview of your company and a succinct and relevant 50 second story on how you’ve successfully helped another client with a similar issue.

FocuS on the bIg pIcture. Next, talk about them—their company, its vision, strategic objectives, 5-year plan, and how this project fits into these goals. Ideally, you would have gotten some of this information prior to the meeting, helping you to begin to understand their true needs and business objectives. If this is the case, listen to the client and clarify what you think you already know.

Sometimes a client will start a meeting by saying “show me what you’ve got.” Don’t let this undermine your focus to learn about them. An effective response is “I’ve been in the industry for a long time and have many success stories. That said, I think you will find informa-tion that is pertinent to this project more useful. Can we speak about your specific challenges?” During the conversation, confirm your understanding by periodi-cally repeating back information they’ve shared (e.g., “So you’re telling me that you’re goal is to increase sales by 20% and you need tools to help you do that. Do I have that right?”) This shows the client that you are listening to them and seek-ing to understand their needs.

get SpecIFIc! Often what the client ini-tially thinks they need may not be what will actually drive their success. To really get to the root of the issue, it’s important to ask open-ended questions both about the current challenge and how they’ve handled similar situations in the past. The information you learn here will help you to understand their expectations and formulate a customized solution using language that resonates with the client. Steer clear of questions that can be an-swered by a simple yes or no.

noW It’S Your turn. Now that you have a good idea of the client’s “prob-lem”, it’s your turn to talk – your 20%. Now is the time to discuss why and how your product or service is the best solution. This is a good time to repeat the client’s “problem” – in fact, take it a step fur-ther and re-frame it more positively, as a quantifiable business “opportunity.” You might also share another very brief success story of how you’ve helped a client overcome a similar challenge. Re-member, every client’s “opportunity” is going to be unique, so you don’t need to share an example of how you’ve solved that exact problem – just how you’ve handled similar situations and handled them well. The stories and illustrations you share will help your client to connect to you and understand what it might be like to work with you. Just make sure you are able to share your stories succinctly and in language that resonates with your target client!

SucceSS DeFIneD. Success starts with you. Ask yourself, what does “wild suc-cess” at the end of this meeting look

like? How do I want the client to feel and what do I want them to know, believe and do at the end of the meeting? Have a clear vision of your desired outcome be-fore you even set the meeting; this way, every action you take along the way will be aligned with your goal, setting you up to close the deal. For an initial sales meet-ing, some elements of success might an-swer the questions, “Did I …?”: • establish a rapport with the client with

them talking more of the time• show up as a solution• discuss any foreseen challenges to

meet those objectives• interject in a conversational style

stories about how I’ve helped other clients accomplish similar goals

• discuss the project time-line, determine their budget, and confirm next steps, including accountability and timing

Above all, have fun! Be authentic and passionate about your work and the value you bring to businesses like your client’s. If you believe in yourself, it will make it a lot easier for them to believe in you as well. And remember, it’s not about you. Show up as a true business partner, appealing to the client’s sense of enlight-ened self interest, helping them to see that you CARE about them and are fo-cused on their needs. If you care, they’ll care. And that will be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
