PLEASE NOTE!

All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.

All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.

Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.

Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

10) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE

NETHERWOOD by Jane Sanderson

ABOVE STAIRS

Lord Netherwood keeps his considerable fortune, and the upkeep of Netherwood Hall, ticking over with the profits from his three coal mines. The welfare of his employees isn’t a pressing concern – more important is keeping his wife and daughters happy and ensuring the heir to the family wealth, the charming but feckless Tobias, stays out of trouble.

BELOW STAIRS

Eve Williams is the wife of one of Lord Netherwood’s employees. When her life is brought crashing down, Eve must look to her own self-sufficiency and talent to provide for her three young children. And it’s then that ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ collide in truly dramatic fashion.

11) NATURAL BEAUTY AND AWSUM NEWSPAPER COMPETITION

Zak and Mikey led out the Trojans on a sunny winter morning at home game against Camps Bay.

Fairmont was on the board quickly at 7 : 0. Camps Bay strike back and it was 7 : 7. After that it was really just Fairmont all the way. Camps Bay fought hard, but our structures and defense was far more organized and resolute. It was a hard game that led to some injuries. Both Mikey and Spencer will have to sit the next one out.

19) CROSS COUNTRY

Fairmont senior cross country runners did exceptionally well in the Northern Zone championships held at Brackenfell on Wednesday, 5 August.

Samuel van der Merwe (our boys’ Captain) came second, while Carmen van der Merwe (girls’ Captain) came 3rd . Both captains were awarded medals.

Nina Dunleavy U16 came 4th out of 53 qualifying entrants, Bianca Harper U19 came 8th, and Sabrina Beeka U16 came 10th.

Three junior girls, namely Aakifah van Rooyen, Merle Burger and Rebecca Walker participated. Aakifah came 17th and Merle 18th out of 59 qualifying entrants.

From the abovementioned athletes, several may qualify to participate in the Western Cape Championships to be held at the University of the Western Cape on Saturday.

We are very proud of all these dedicated athletes!

20) GIRLS’ HOCKEY

1ST TEAM

The International Hockey Tournament saw our first team girls hit the second half of the season running as during the first week of school the girls played 8 games in 5 days including The Settlers derby on the Saturday.

This was excellent preparation for the second half of the league season as 5 massive league fixtures lay in waiting. The first was on Saturday morning as the girls took on Rustenberg. Despite having beaten them in the early part of the season to advance to the third round of the SPAR Knock-Out Tournament, it was always going to be a tough encounter.

Page 17: Fairmont Focus 24: 6 August 2015

The girls produced some of the best hockey of the season in an enthralling first half but saw a few clear cut chances go a begging. The second half saw Fairmont take an early lead through a Cayley Jones penalty stroke after Nicole de Abreau-Aires was denied on the goal line by a Rustenberg foot. Continued pressure and excellent build up play saw a deserved second goal for Fairmont as Courtney Sinclair finished off a good attacking move up the right flank.

The final 10 minutes were a tense affair as Rustenberg scored a scrappy goal to get back in the game but it ended on 1 - 2 to Fairmont for an excellent win.

The hockey kept on coming as a touring team from Blundell School in England arrived late on Sunday evening. After being hosted by some of the first team girls, it was time to do battle on the turf on Monday.

After one of the most entertaining and high tempo games of the season, the Blundell girls ended up winning the game 3 : 2. The post-match presentation saw our captain receive a beautiful shield from Blundell as a reminder of the great occasion. That evening the girls all headed to Willowbridge as well as some of the Fairmont parents who shared dinner with the staff from Blundell. All in all a fantastic experience!

21) BOYS’ HOCKEY

Fairmont played the all mighty Rondebosch Boys’ High on Friday, 31 August. Although most of our teams bowed to this legendary boys’ hockey school, our 1st team did us proud with a final score of 1 : 1.

Fairmont dominated the first half and it is a pity we could not score more from the ample opportunities we had. Our defense did us proud in only allowing one goal from nine short corners.

Lawrence Kenyon-Slade

Page 18: Fairmont Focus 24: 6 August 2015

Congratulations to Luke Jervis and Kyle Friester for playing their 50th cap on Friday.

The 1st team also played a Knock-out on Monday, 3 August, and beat Bosmansdam 19 : 1.

Congratulations to Lawrence Kenyon- Slade who played his 50th Cap.

24) WELL DONE

Samuel van der Merwe Gr. 11

Samuel van der Merwe, the cross country boys’ captain, recently took part in several major long distance races.

Samuel came 1st in the Juniors and 4th overall at the Jive Slave 10km race. His time was just under 33 minutes.

Last Saturday, Samuel participated in the cross country club championships. He came 1st in the boys’ U17.

He also ran the McKenna & Scott 10km race last Sunday in a time of 31:57. Samuel was placed 1st in the Juniors and 5th overall. There were 1,500 participants.

Samuel was chosen as runner of the month for the Bellville Running Club. He ran the Master 15km in a time of 49:58.

On Wednesday, Samuel came 2nd to the South African champion at the Northern Zone School Cross Country Championships.

We are really proud to have this phenominal committee athlete in our midst!

25) PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Time appears to be approaching rather rapidly for the start of our matric trial exams. This against our Grade 12 teachers having to complete their teaching in the next three weeks.

We encourage all our Matrics to continue working hard for this exam.

Happy weekend to all our families.

Yours sincerely

Mr R Dingley PRINCIPAL
