Swedish design The tsantai TM collection is the brainchild of our Swedish designer Tord Kjellstrom (S.I.D.). He has created five ranges, each of which answers our brief for a feelgood chair in its own individual way. That brief was to create furniture which did ‘feel good’ in every sense of the phrase: great looking, really comfortable, produced on a fair-trade basis, and using natural materials that can be sustainably sourced. Tord’s designs achieve that goal by combining bold and unusual styling, with a deep understanding of what makes for a comfortable sitting experience. Fair deal Making sure our producers get a fair deal is fundamental to us, that’s why we have been so bold as to call ourselves the Fairtrade Furniture Company! Our partners set their own prices, and a percentage of the price goes towards social, health and development projects for the workers. We also pay 60% up front with every order. Santai means relaxation and feeling good in Indonesian, and that is what we have set out to provide with this range of comfy chairs and stylish furniture. And so our brand of tsantai TM feelgood furniture was born (the ‘t’ is silent by the way!)

Swedish designThe tsantaiTM collection is the brainchild of our Swedish designer Tord Kjellstrom (S.I.D.). He has created five ranges, each of which answers our brief for a feelgood chair in its own individual way.

That brief was to create furniture which did ‘feel good’ in every sense of the phrase: great looking, really comfortable, produced

on a fair-trade basis, and using natural materials that can be sustainably sourced.

Tord’s designs achieve that goal by combining bold and unusual styling, with a deep understanding of what makes for a comfortable sitting experience.

Fair dealMaking sure our producers get a fair deal is fundamental to us, that’s why we have been so bold as to call ourselves the Fairtrade Furniture Company!

Our partners set their own prices, and a percentage of the price goes towards social, health and development projects for the workers. We also pay 60% up front with every order.

Santai means relaxation and feeling good in Indonesian, and that is what we have set out to provide with this range of comfy chairs and stylish furniture. And so our brand of tsantaiTM feelgood furniture was born (the ‘t’ is silent by the way!)

The unique and stylish design of the Semarang chair showcases the creative flair of our Swedish designer Tord Kjellstrom at his most original.

The asymmetrical design creates a curl-in corner, with one side high for you to nestle into, the other low, so when you put 2 chairs together you create a special feel-good space – perfect for chatting and unwinding.

Works equally well in garden rooms and traditional living spaces...

Available in sets, or as single itemsPictured here is the 6-piece set. This comprises a two-seater sofa, left and right chairs, coffee and side tables, and footstool.

The Jepara chairs fit neatly into a corner or up against a wall. This modular design creates a range of seating possibilities which provide luxurious seating with a surprisingly small footprint.

The rich colours of the weaving material are beautifully offset by the wood and the cushion fabric, making a pleasing addition to any living space. Works well as a single corner chair, or to create a feelgood space for two in living areas, as well as bringing a conservatory or garden room to life.

Kartosuro

Geneva Tabasco Naina Olive Taaru Cirrus

The inspiration for this range was a cylindrical drum, which you see best when you look at this chair from the back and sides. The straight vertical lines of the chair structure contrast with its nearly circular cross-section when seen from above: so from behind you see a beautiful woven sculpture, from in front a comfortable well-balanced armchair!

The range includes a practical side-table at the perfect height for drinks, a coffee table available with either wooden or glass top, and a multi-purpose footstool (can be sat on, and used for trays, as well as being a home for your feet or pets).

Materials usedThis simple but graceful design is made from pale banana fibre woven onto a rattan pole frame. The wooden components are made using acacia and teak (in transition to FSC sources). Sumptuous feather-filled cushions complete the chair and sofa, creating truly comfortable feelgood chairs.

Available in sets, or as single itemsPictured above is the Kartosuro 6-piece set, comprising two-seater sofa, two chairs, coffee and side tables, and footstool, plus small lamp.

What we mean by Fair TradeOur guiding principles

The Fair Trade Furniture Company was set up in 2007 by Hugh and Rachel Ross. It is a family concern with simple aspirations:

• Create special products which people will cherish

• Make Fair Trade a way of life

• Minimise our environmental footprint

• Be honest and open in all our communications.

Fair Trade and FurnitureWe believe that the Fair Trade principles can be applied just as well to furniture as to those smaller craft items and food products for which Fair Trade is now more famous. There is no Fair Trade mark or label yet developed for furniture products. However we have signed up to the 10 guiding principles of the World Fair Trade Organisation, and have been implementing their guidelines for the last 3 years.

In practice, this means our producers get:

• Payment of 60% in advance, meaning no borrowing required

• Payment of remainder when goods arrive safely in the UK

• A fair price for the goods, set by the producers, not by us as buyers

• Investment in health and education programmes

• Support for improvements to working conditions and facilities

Environmental impactWe have deliberately chosen weaving materials which are all fast growing, renewable natural resources, which grow abundantly in Indonesia: rattan, seagrass and banana fibre.

Of these, the material we use most is seagrass; this comes from Kulonprago district near the famous temple of Borobodur. The seagrass is produced by hundreds of local farmers as an extra source of income.

The main wood we use is called ‘mindi’. This is an Indonesian hardwood, which grows fast (to a tree diameter of about 50cm in 10-12 years) and is found locally on Java about 3-4 hours drive from Kendal.

Our partner Mokko has now achieved SVLK certification, which means the mindi wood is fully tracked from source through to the final product, and is regularly audited. We are now working with Sukofindo (a local certification and assessment agency) to move the mindi growers and timber suppliers towards FSC certification. This programme applies to our Semarang and Jepara ranges.

All other ranges are produced by INORI who have now transitioned to 100% use of FSC-certified acacia and teak.

We are also working with our producer partners to identify ways in which we can reduce our environmental impact, such as eliminating the use of bleach in the rattan weaving process.

Other measures which we are taking to reduce our carbon footprint include container sharing between suppliers, offsetting any air journeys we have to make, using Ecotricity as our energy supplier in the UK, and using bikes to get to work!

Our Fair Trade Story

We are now full members of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).

The people behind the productsInoriInori (Indonesia Origin) are based in Jogyakarta. They are a Fair Trade agency established in June 2004 with the aim of facilitating micro and small producers to access markets through their trading activities. They manage and co-ordinate the producer groups involved in the production of the Jogya and Kartosuro ranges.

Foremost amongst these is the Kisno workshop in Trangsan (Kartosuro region), where this small family business continues the long-standing weaving tradition of the area. Mr and Mrs Kisno employ about 6 full-time weavers.

The second main group with whom Inori work is Mandiri Craft. This is a specialist not-for-profit company which employs and supports people with physical disabilities. They have a team of carpenters who make all the wooden elements of the ranges supplied by Inori (seatframes, shelves, table tops etc). These people enjoy good working conditions, stable job prospects, training, and the options of in-house accommodation; all things which are very rarely available to disadvantaged groups such as the physically disabled or handicapped in Indonesia.

The lampshades and electrical components in our lighting range are made by a small company called Borneo Lighting, who specialize in handmade lampshades using recycled materials and other craft-based materials.

Mokko International (and Pondok Kayu Tropis)Mokko are responsible for all products in the Semarang and Jepara ranges. They are based in a small town called Kendal, about 30km to the West of the city of Semarang, on the North coast of Java.

Working conditions are excellent in their small but modern factory, which specialises in production of wooden structures for modular homes. Skilled rattan weavers from the furniture-making centre of Jepara have now joined the Mokko team in Kendal so that the products can be made in one location, under one roof. The Mokko business is run by Tommy Fredrikkson, and currently employs about 12 people.

Chandni Chowk FabricsWe now work closely with the Fair Trade retailer Chandni Chowk based in Devon. They provide us with handwoven fabrics which come from a remote area in Northern India called Naugaun. Here a group of farmers have invested in home-based handlooms to provide themselves with additional work and income when they are not working the land. They provide the beautful handwoven and hand-dyed fabric which is now one of our two main fabric options. They have been trading with Chandni Chowk for over 20 years.

Fine Quality Feather CompanyOur high quality cushions are produced in Frome (Somerset) by the Fine Quality Feather Company which employs 15 women.

Page 16: Fairtrade Furniture Brochure 2014 v2

Natural weaving materialsWe use seagrass, rattan, and banana fibre as our principle weaving materials. By using these strong and sustainable

raw materials we help to preserve local craft skills and also minimise our environmental impact.

Craft and carpentry skillsThe craftsmanship of our producers is remarkable. They take pride in the detailing of

their work, and in providing a top-quality product for your lasting enjoyment. We can now show you exactly who was involved in the production of your specific piece of furniture so you have a direct link back to the producer.

The comfort of feathersOur cushions use old-fashioned duck feather fillings. These create the luxurious feelgood

sensation that you enjoy when you sink into one of our chairs.

Fabric and colour optionsAll our cushion covers are removable and machine-washable.

There is a choice of three fabric types; one is a cotton-linen blend the other two fairly traded handwoven cotton fabrics from India. There is a wide choice of colours available.

Range of options We hope you will find something in this collection that works for you, whether it is a single comfy chair for contemplation, a set of chairs for great conversations, or a complete suite for living and entertaining.
