the first step.

11 To have faith is to be sure of thethings we hope for, to be certain of
the things we cannot see.2 It was by their faith that people ofancient times won God's approval.3 It is by faith that we understandthat the universe was created by
God's word, so that what can be
seen was made out of what cannot
be seen.

Gen 1 In the beginning, when God
created the universe, 2 the earth was
formless and desolate. The raging
ocean that covered everything was
engulfed in total darkness, and theSpirit of God was moving over the
water.3 Then God commanded, Let there be
lightand light appeared. 4 God waspleased with what he saw. Then he
separated the light from the
darkness, 5 and he named the light
Day and the darkness Night.
Evening passed and morning came
that was the first day.

21 When Enoch had lived sixty-five years, he
fathered Methuselah. 22And Enoch walked with
God after he fathered Methuselah three
hundred years, and fathered sons anddaughters. 23And all the days of Enoch were
three hundred and sixty-five years. 24And
Enoch walked with God, and he was no more,
for God took him.
11 5 It was faith that kept Enoch from dying.
Instead, he was taken up to God, and nobody
could find him, because God had taken him
up. The scripture says that before Enoch wastaken up, he had pleased God. 6 No one can
please God without faith, for whoever comes to
God must have faith that God exists and
rewards those who seek him.

Noah's Ark by Edward Hicks 1846
Gen 6 11 Now the earth was corrupt in Gods sight and was full of
violence.12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people
on earth had corrupted their ways. 13 So God said to Noah, I am going to
put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because ofthem. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. 14 So make
yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with
pitch inside and out.22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

8 It was faith that made Abraham obeywhen God called him to go out to a
country which God had promised to
give him. He left his own country
without knowing where he was
going.9
By faith he lived as a foreignerin the country that God had promised
him. He lived in tents, as did Isaac and
Jacob, who received the same
promise from God. 10 For Abraham
was waiting for the city which God has
designed and built, the city with
permanent foundations.
12 The LORD said to Abram,
Leave your country, yourrelatives, and your father's
home, and go to a land that I am
going to show you.

11 It was faith that made Abraham able
to become a father, even though he
was too old and Sarah herself could
not have children. He trusted God tokeep his promise. 12 Though Abraham
was practically dead, from this one
man came as many descendants as
there are stars in the sky, as many as
the numberless grains of sand on theseashore.
Gen 15 4 Then the word of
the LORDcame to him: Thisman will not be your heir, but a
son who is your own flesh and
blood will be your heir.5 He
took him outside and said,Look up at the sky and count
the starsif indeed you can
count them. Then he said to
him, So shall your
offspring be.

Romans 418
Against all hope, Abraham in hopebelieved and so became the father of many
nations, just as it had been said to him, So shall
your offspring be.19 Without weakening in his faith,
he faced the fact that his body was as good as
deadsince he was about a hundred years old
and that Sarahs womb was also dead.20 Yet he did
not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of
God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave
glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God hadpower to do what he had promised. 22 This is why it
was credited to him as righteousness.

13 It was in faith that all these persons died. They did not
receive the things God had promised, but from a long way
off they saw them and welcomed them, and admitted
openly that they were foreigners and refugees on
earth.
14
Those who say such things make it clear that theyare looking for a country of their own. 15 They did not keep
thinking about the country they had left; if they had, they
would have had the chance to return. 16 Instead, it was a
better country they longed for, the heavenly country. And so
God is not ashamed for them to call him their God,because he has prepared a city for them.

23 It was faith that made the parents of Moses hide him for three months after he was
born. They saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid to disobey theking's order.

24 It was faith that made Moses, when he
had grown up, refuse to be called the son
of the king's daughter. 25 He preferred to
suffer with God's people rather than to
enjoy sin for a little while. 26 He reckoned
that to suffer scorn for the Messiah was
worth far more than all the treasures of
Egypt, for he kept his eyes on the future
reward.27 It was faith that made Moses leave
Egypt without being afraid of the king'sanger. As though he saw the invisible
God, he refused to turn back. 28 It was
faith that made him establish the
Passover and order the blood to be
sprinkled on the doors, so that the Angelof Death would not kill the first-born sons
of the Israelites.29 It was faith that made the Israelites able
to cross the Red Sea as if on dry land;
when the Egyptians tried to do it, the
water swallowed them up.

32And what more shall I say? I do not havetime to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson
and Jephthah, about David and
Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through
faith conquered kingdoms, administered
justice, and gainedwhat was promised;
who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched
the fury of the flames, and escaped the
edge of the sword; whose weakness was
turned to strength; and who became
powerful in battle and routed foreign
armies.

28 The woman said to him, Sir, did I ask you for a son? Didn't I tell you not to
get my hopes up?
29 Elisha turned to Gehazi and said, Hurry! Take my walking stick and go.
Don't stop to greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, don't take timeto answer. Go straight to the house and hold my stick over the boy.30 The woman said to Elisha, I swear by my loyalty to the living LORD and to
you that I will not leave you! So the two of them started back
together. 31 Gehazi went on ahead and held Elisha's stick over the child, but
there was no sound or any other sign of life. So he went back to meet Elisha
and said, The boy didn't wake up.
32 When Elisha arrived, he went alone into the room and saw the boy lying
dead on the bed. 33 He closed the door and prayed to the LORD. 34 Then he lay
down on the boy, placing his mouth, eyes, and hands on the boy's mouth,
eyes, and hands. As he lay stretched out over the boy, the boy's body startedto get warm. 35 Elisha got up, walked around the room, and then went back and
again stretched himself over the boy. The boy sneezed seven times and then
opened his eyes. 36 Elisha called Gehazi and told him to call the boy's mother.
When she came in, he said to her, Here's your son.37 She fell at Elisha's feet,
with her face touching the ground; then she took her son and left.

Others, refusing to accept freedom,
died under torture in order to be raised
to a better life. 36 Some were mocked
and whipped, and others were put in
chains and taken off to prison. 37 Theywere stoned, they were sawed in two,
they were killed by the sword. They
went around clothed in skins of sheep
or goatspoor, persecuted, and
mistreated. 38 The world was not goodenough for them! They wandered like
refugees in the deserts and hills, living
in caves and holes in the ground.39 What a record all of these have won
by their faith! Yet they did not receivewhat God had promised, 40 because
God had decided on an even better
plan for us. His purpose was that only
in company with us would they be
made perfect.
Ascension of Isaiah
57
. And they took Isaiah the son ofAmos and sawed him in halves with a
wood saw. And Manassah, Belkira,
and the false prophets, as well as the
princes and the people stood by and
looked on.8. But as for the prophets that were
with Isaiah, before he was sawed in
halves he had said to them to go to the
district of Tyre and Sidon, because for
me alone the Lord has mixed this cup.9. And while Isaiah was sawed inhalves he did not cry out nor weep, but
his mouth spoke with the Holy Spirit
until he was sawed in two.

39 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been
promised, 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with
uswould they be made perfect.
