Sermon by Pastor Dale Peterson
Dear People of Faith,
First, I want to say, “Thank you!” I
am completely overwhelmed by the
incredible welcome and hospitality
that has been to my family as we
have transitioned to Faith Lutheran.
We have received more words of
welcome and dinner invitations in
these two months than we’ve
received in years in other places
we’ve lived!
One of the reasons I was excited to
come to Faith was your expressed desire through your
Kairos survey and long-range plan to “cultivate more mean-
ingful relationships at Faith.” That desire mirrors one of my
deepest passions in ministry.
Recent surveys are telling us that Americans have
become some of the loneliest people in the world. We
interact with MORE people than ever before, but on the
most superficial of levels.
The number of social evenings we spend with friends
has dropped by 1/3rd in just two decades (Gallup).
7 in 10 of us report not knowing our neighbors (Gallup).
Americans in 2004 invited friends over to their home
60% less often than those surveyed in 1978 (Putnam).
How can we possibly go about “loving our neighbors as
ourselves” when we don’t even KNOW who they ARE?
Unfortunately, many of us have become afraid to extend
hospitality to our neighbors. Martha Stewart and Pinterest
have convinced us that if we WANT to invite people into our
lives, the counters must be granite, the place settings
should be seasonal, and the wine parings…perfectly
matched. The kitchen should be uncluttered, and the food
gourmet. For many of us, this means that no one’s coming
to dinner...ever.
Here at Faith Lutheran, I am hoping to start a revolution
by creating plenty of opportunities for you to get to know
your neighbors and build friendships at Faith. Right now,
we have twelve (and counting…) scheduled “Meet and
Greets” throughout the neighborhoods represented in our
congregation. Their purpose is for me to get to know you,
for you to get to know your Faith neighbors, and for me to
hear your thoughts about how we can work together to
make Faith known as the #1 place in Waconia for people to
find authentic, meaningful friendships! We want outsiders
to feel welcomed and integrated as quickly as possible!
If you haven’t signed up for a Meet and Greet, please
register here for a Meet and Greet near you. While it would
be great for you to attend the “Meet and Greet,” in your
area, find whichever one fits your schedule. It only takes 1
½ hours to stand against this culture of isolation and to
make a difference in the world.
In Gratitude,
Pastor Christine
A Message from Pastor Christine,

W aconia area churches will again be partnering with the Waconia United Food Shelf to help bring the children of our community using the Food Shelf an Easter Basket. There are currently 120 children ages 1-12 whose families utilize the Waconia United Food Shelf on
a monthly basis. It is our hope that each one of those children will wake up Easter morning and find an Easter basket waiting for them. We will of course need lots of help to make that happen. There will be a large Easter Basket in the Gathering Space of the church, and one located in the Education Wing for the Sunday School Children, to accept donations of wrapped candy (bags and individual items), individual lunch box size cookies, crackers, fruit and small Easter gifts that would fit in the basket. i.e. Easter bunnies, stuffed animals, sidewalk chalk, card games, bubbles, small trucks, yoyo’s, squirt guns, small dolls, jump ropes, small balls etc. Baskets will be handed out to children through age 12, so small gifts for older children will be needed also, i.e. nail polish, hair barrettes, and small items for pre-teen boys. Cash donations would also be appreciated. You may write checks to Faith Lutheran Church and indicate they are for the Easter Basket Project. There will be a jar in the large baskets to accept cash donations. Please plan to make your donations beginning February 10 through Sunday, March 6. Baskets will be assembled at Faith on Saturday, March 12 from 9-noon and delivered to the Food Shelf that day for distribution to families in the two weeks prior to Easter. Any adults wishing to help assemble baskets please join us on March 12.
Minnesota FoodShare provides an opportunity to make your food shelf donations even more valuable to the community. During the month of March, Minnesota FoodShare will match 10% of all donations both monetary and food made to the food shelf. The Waconia Food Shelf is currently in need of the following items: Priority Cold weather items: soups, stews, chili, hot cereal, cocoa, tea, and coffee. Personal care items such as toothbrushes (single pack, please, we cannot break a multiple pack apart), toothpaste, deodorant (men’s and woman’s), bar soap, shampoo, and women’s personal items such as tampax. Many of our clients are pursuing finding work and personal hygiene care is critical. Helpful Hearty soups that can be added to rice or noodles to make a meal are needed. Canned meals that children like such as Beef Ravioli are needed for the winter. Other “kid friendly” items are also welcomed. Watch there outside sign on the corner of Elm and Main for item requests. The Waconia United Food Shelf provides a wonderful service to the community. We have many volunteers working to ensure that those in need can put food on their tables, while local businesses and members of the community provide monetary and food donations.

”Three More Words”
In last month's FitSpirit exercise I gave you four words to study: strength, wisdom, compassion and peace. This month I'm sticking with that plan and giving you three more words to focus on for this months spiritual exercise. The idea struck me last week as I opened the morning paper and was faced with side by side photos of two of our presidential candidates. The message they were expressing was almost identical and visibly clear. Fists clenched and raised, gritting teeth, furrowed brows, piercing eyes, jutting jaws, spewing aggressive speech... (remember, I told you I like words!). What was their message? What emotion did they convey? Look at the photo and you will clearly see... anger. Probably the most dangerous (dangerous) word I know. Whenever I dig deep into different words, I look for definitions, synonyms, antonyms, etc. But I also look for context. I look for
how the words are used to express different ideas in different forums. Which brings me to our three words for today: slow...to...anger. I took them from a letter written by a guy named Jim, quite awhile ago. Those three words are great advice, that gets even better with additional context: "You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness." (James 1: 19-20) So, one of the best ways to achieve last month's words, is to practice the three for this month. They come from a biblical source, conveying a universal truth for peaceful life, for people of all faiths. We may not always be able to eliminate anger, but if we spend time trying to slow it down, the results to your spiritual fitness can be very noticeable. Take Care, Pastor Dan Carlson

asking for perennial plants for a future
garden on the north side of our building. It
may be early to be thinking about splitting
plants, but they are asking for willing
donations in the spring.
The Building and Maintenance Crew ask that
the plants are Minnesota hardy and easy to
maintain. Some examples are, hostas,
tulips, black eyed Susan's, lavender, and
ornamental grasses.
If you have further questions about the do-
nation of plants, please contact Susie Watts
at 952-442-2101.

Fourth Thursday Book Club meets March 31st, in the Fireside
Room, at 7:00pm. to discuss Calling Me Home! In Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler, eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a favor to ask her hairdresser Dorrie Curtis. It's a big one. Isabelle wants Dorrie, a black single mom in her thirties, to drop everything to drive Isabelle from her home in Arlington, Texas, to a funeral in Cincinnati. With no clear explanation why. Tomorrow. Curious whether she can unlock the secrets of Isabelle's guarded past, she agrees, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives. New York Times bestselling author Diane Chamberlain You'd never guess that Calling Me Home is a debut novel, Julie Kibler's writing is so wise and assured. Although the two strong women she's created come from com-pletely different backgrounds, the bond that grows between them is extraordinary, touching and believable. I laughed out loud in places and had tears in my eyes as I turned the last page. I can't wait to watch Julie Kibler's star rise!

Jesus' Last Supper was actually a Jewish Passover. Liz Goldstein of Jews for Jesus will re-create the traditional Passover service and explain how it foreshadowed Jesus' death and resurrection in a presentation called "Christ in the Passover" at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sunday, March 20th at 6:00 PM. The congregation is invited to attend and afterward discuss the presentation over dessert. Liz Goldstein will set a table with items traditionally used at the Passover meal and detail their spiritual significance. She will also explain the connection between the events of the first Passover in Egypt and the redemption that Jesus accomplished, as well as the deep bond between the ancient Passover feast and the Christian communion celebration today. Liz Goldstein will be happy to answer questions after the presentation. Jews for Jesus has presented "Christ in the Passover" at over 38,000 churches. It has been enthusiastically received by Christians who appreciate learning more about the Jewish backgrounds of their faith.

Our Ministry has been meeting the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm to discuss continuing Building and Maintenance needs to keep our beautiful facility up and running and festive for the various seasons we honor. We have on-going repairs and general maintenance that requires attention and funding: filters, light bulbs, snow plowing, cleaning, lawn maintenance, parking lots, roofs, mechanical and electrical systems need continual management and up keep. We have been very Budget focused this past year working at reducing operating costs and evaluating cost saving measures to reduce costs. We are currently working on and researching options to repair, maintain and revitalize our parking lot in the spring-summer of 2016, to keep our facility beautiful, safe and functioning. This is a costly exercise and maintenance effort, and is generally considered “out of sight, out of mind”, but the reality of foregoing on-going maintenance and repair of a parking lot means replacing it, which results in much larger expense and downtime. Our ministry hosts Spring and Fall volunteer clean-ups each season, which have been well attended and very supportive, Thank You. Please watch the newsletter and bulletins for future Spring and Fall Clean-Ups. We are continually seeking new volunteers and new faces to help out with Building and Maintenance, and its fun! A special thank you to: Carl Bredberg, Roger Denbrook, Mike Larkin, Tom Kurtz, Howard Lake, Scott Trexley and Joe Larson for all your efforts and volunteer time. It is so appreciated. Thank you, Building and Maintenance John N. Shaw “Jack”

Bible Camp. What’s that all about? There’s something very special about a Bible camp experience.
At camp “FAITH IS NURTURED through HOLY PLAY.”
By watching the actions of their camp counselors, campers see first-hand what
it looks like to live and work and play in the family of God.
Scripture, Prayer and Worship are a part of everyday.
Swimming, large group games, small group games and time with peers are
important too.
Campers are surrounded by creation as well as peers, counselors and church
staff all at the same time. A GREAT CLOUD of WITNESSES!
Camp is a week- long SABBATH experience away from a world that is often too
busy.
The camp, the family and the congregation are partners. When the children and their youth ministers get away for a Bible Camp
experience everyone benefits. That is why Mary T and Myron feel it so important to accompany our kids at camp. They get to go
to camp too! At the end of the week all return to Faith and to Waconia with shared memories of our very special time away at
camp.
Kids from Faith Lutheran have the opportunity to choose their camp.
We take groups of young people to the camps of Green Lake Lutheran Ministries in Spicer and/or New London, MN. Our camp
week this year is July 24-29. Half Blast is a weekend camp for 1st – 4th grade our weekend is July 15-17. If these times don’t work,
find one that does - visit the website www.gllm.org for more information or to register.
We take a group to Lake Wapogasset in Amery, WI. Our camp week this year is July 31 – August 5th. Seeds is a weekend camp
for 2nd and 3rd grade. Our weekend is July 29-31. Visit the website www.campwapo.org for more information or to register.
We believe every child should experience Bible Camp at some time in their life. If you’re curious ask Mary T or Myron and we’ll
help. Interested? Ask us and we’ll help get you signed up.
