That time includes one month of vacation (July) and one month of sabbatical (August). During that time, in an effort to recharge and renew, I'm asking for your help. Please don't contact me. I know that sounds harsh, but here's the thing: I love you guys and this church SO MUCH--so much, in fact, that I think about it ALL the time. My mind is constantly running with ideas, follow ups and what-ifs and we -shoulds! The point of a sabbatical is to take a break from all of that, and the only way to really get a shot at doing just that- -taking a break--is to make a hard stop of communication. Except, I'm really bad at it. So, help me be better by not texting or calling or FB messaging me. Very often, just in a regular week, I'll get a message that starts "I know it's your day off, but..." Please refrain from sending anything of the sort. It just pulls me right back in which defeats all the hard work we've put into making this happen. I'm sure you're wondering, "But what about emergencies?" Good news! We've got you covered. Rev. Peter Hammond of the Bridgewater Congregational Church will be available for Pastoral Emergencies and will be available for crises. Also, our Church Secretary, Nance Glover, knows what to do and where to refer folks. So just let her know (during office hours!). Should there be something that does need my immediate attention, she and our Deacon Chair, Charlie Stauffacher, will make that decision and reach out to me. Theirs are the only calls I'll take. I know that sounds so, so hard and jerkish. But I really believe it's for the best. A few of you have asked exactly what a sabbatical is and why pastors get one. Fair questions! Pastoral Reflections The Reverend David F. Peters, Minister This will be on the longer side, but I do hope you'll read it. ( A tip of the hat to Jonathan Chapman for his column on this subject.) I will be away from July 1 – August 31. That time includes one month of vacation (July) and one month of sabbatical (August). During that time, in an effort to recharge and renew, I'm asking for your help. Please don't contact me. My mind is constantly running with ideas, follow ups and what-ifs and we -shoulds! The point of a sabbatical is to take a break from all of that, and the only way to really get a shot at doing just that--taking a break--is to make a hard stop of communication. Except, I'm really bad at it. So, help me be better by not texting or calling or FB messaging me. Very often, just in a regular week, I'll get a message that starts "I know it's your day off, but..." + My position is 24/7. That is, I'm basically always on call for everyone. I love it. Don't get me wrong. But after a while, it gets taxing. Clergy sabbaticals pause that race so clergy can breathe and ultimately care for you better. It relieves me of the day-to-day tasks of being a minister. +In my terms of call that we agreed on when I accepted the position, I was granted four months after every six years. Instead of taking all four months at once (which would present a financial burden to the church as well as halt all the GREAT momentum we've got going), I’ve had a history of taking one month/year for the four years. That gives me a break, but also keeps the energy alive in our vibrant congregation. This is the first in this round of those four one-month breaks. +Clergy Sabbaticals in the protestant tradition come from our historic emphasis on an educated clergy. In fact, my black robe isn't a religious one, it's an academic one--a sign of education. For centuries, protestant traditions have championed academic causes and looked to the academic world for leadership. From that tradition, we get sabbaticals. Yet, the word comes from sabbath. One of the ten commandments, of course, is that we keep it! Here's what will happen and what I need from you: -Your involvement in our two big summer events: Trivia Night on July 20 and our annual Beef Barbecue on August 24. I will be around and attending Trivia Night and will be active in the lead up to the Beef Barbecue on August 24. -Your presence at worship. I have put together a GREAT group of preachers for you each Sunday. Often, I'll hear people say, "Well, if David's not there, I'm not going to go." Don't fall prey to that. You know as well I as do what a special place our church is and how much better our week is when we start it with God. Keep coming. Please look at the schedule of Summer Preacher and Summer Pastoral Emergency Coverage on Page 5. -Your understanding that our social media presence will be cut back. Nancy will send out the eFaith Matters (Call to Worship) on Fridays. Our Facebook exposure will be minimal. There will not be Facebook Live streaming of our services. While you may see me around town, don’t ignore me, but also be mindful of my being,“off.” Finally, I'm going to miss everyone. Seriously. I just love this place and you all. And I'm so grateful for this opportunity that you've afforded me. Thank you. Have a great summer! With Love and Appreciation, David

thank you …to the Fellowship Committee for hosting the Church Picnic on Church Family Day June 9. …to everyone who bought Father’s Day cards to benefit Church World Services. …to Diana de Vries for knitting prayer squares – they are always welcome and appreciated. … to everyone who helped with our Art at the Meetinghouse 14th Annual Juried Art Show June 14-16. Thanks to our organizers, benefactors, the Art Show team, our Judge, Thomas Adkins, our guests and those who purchased works. A portion of the works sold will benefit the ministries of our church.

Tag Sale Coming Saturday, August 10

9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Our 16th Tag/Bake Sale will take place on Saturday, August 10th. You may rent a table for $25 or rent a space (bring your own table) for $20. The rental money goes to the church and you keep your profits. At this time, there are approximately 14 tables left for rent. This will change once it goes into the local newspapers. You may call Sue Stauffacher at 860-354-1274 before 8:00 p.m. to rent your table. Your money holds your space so prompt payment is a good thing. You may donate items for the church table if you don't have enough to rent your own table. Those items may be brought to the church beginning Sunday, August 4th for sorting and pricing. Also, please bake for the bake sale table. This is a popular table and it all adds up to benefit the church. It will be outside unless it rains, in which case it will be inside. Pray for sun! Any questions, call Sue prior to 8:00 p.m.

We need people to make breakfast beginning at 5:00 am. certain Saturdays and Sundays. Please contact Charlie Meade directly at 860-355-1584 and let him know of your willingness to help.

Daily Bread Food Pantry

Danbury Please help with donations. Our young people collect donations during the worship service the first Sunday of the month. But you can bring them any time and place them in the closet in the entryway to Fellowship Hall. Progresso soup, catsup, sugar, coffee, rice, laundry and dish soap are always needed. So are paper towels, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and other non-food items that we take for granted. Paper and plastic bags for packing are also needed. Call Sue Stauffacher or speak with her at 860-354-1274 with questions or if you would like to join the Food Pantry Team
