Pastor Ben’s Corner

“The Right Place At God’s

Right Time”

“For there is a time and a way for everything, although man's trouble lies heavy on him.”

Ecclesiastes 8:6 We have all probably heard the phrase, “you were in

the right place at the right time” or the opposite, “you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Both of the phrases usually come after a person has received either a favorable or unfavorable outcome

to an event. Yet the question that I have for us today is what do we say and think while the event or activity is going on? Do we often say, “I am in the right place at the right time”? Now I can think back

to times when I probably could have said that, during my wedding for example or at the birth of each of my

children. And yet, when I look back at those times I was more focused on what was actually going on

rather than how blessed I was to be there at that particular moment.

This is not however true, when it comes to the

thought of “I am in wrong place at the wrong time,” after all if I am about to get hit by a car, there is no

doubt in my mind that “I am in the wrong place at the wrong time”. In some ways that is how we treat our

relationship with God. When things are going well, when life is easy, do we stop and thank God for His

provision, His presence and His timing or do we only focus on what is before us?

And yet when things are not going well, when life is

rough, when the walls feel like they are crashing down all around us, we often turn to God

immediately, pointing our finger at Him. We say phrases like, “God, where were you when….” or “God,

how could you let this happen?” We look at the

situation based on the results that we see. We become zoned in on how the situation is effecting us

and the hardships that we are facing because of it. What we don’t often do is ask the question, “What is

God doing in this place in this time?”

That is why the passage from Ecclesiastes chapter 8 is so important, because it points out that everything

happens at a certain time and in a certain way for a reason, even the things that trouble us, that make

life difficult, that “weigh heavy” on us. Now this doesn’t mean that we will always know the reason or

that we can’t feel sad, or even hurt by the situation.

What it does mean is that we can take comfort in the fact that God is at work in the situation. We live in a

world that is broken by sin but we cannot forget the fact that God has overcome the world. That is what

Jesus means when He says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this

world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." No matter the situation, no

matter the timing, God has overcome all that the world can throw at us. So the next time you feel

defeated or like you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, take heart” for God is always in the right

place and with you all the time.

Your brother in Christ,

><>Pastor Ben

ADULT EDUCATION

Beginning October 9, there will be 3 classes for adults on Sunday mornings. The classes are:

An American ‘Coat of Many Colors’ America’s religious diversity has always been colorful, inventive, and interesting. Over these 5 weeks we are going to discuss

various groups which have sprung up in our own New York State back yard—Mormons and the Oneida Community—and

beyond—Jehovah’s Witnesses, Scientology, and the Health and Wealth Gospel of Television Religion. As Lutheran

Christians, we share in American religious diversity and knowing others helps us know and understand our own faith. Pastor

Jeff Hering will lead this class in the Auditorium. Everyone is invited to join us!

Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids How do you instill a solid foundation of faith in your kids that will stick with them long after they leave home? Sticky Faith

Parent Curriculum, a video-based study, gives parents practical, tested ideas that launch kids of all ages into a lifelong

journey of faith and service. The material is especially for parents of adolescents and those approaching adolescence. This

class, led by Lyle Heggemeier, will meet in the Community Room and is open to ALL parents.

Welcome to Faith Pastor Ben will lead this class for anyone interested in knowing more about our faith, as well as all who are interested in

becoming members of Faith Lutheran Church. The class will cover the basics of Christianity (Jesus, sin, God, etc.) and a few

of the things that make Lutherans different from others (e.g., baptism and communion). If you’re interested in the class,

please call Carol (381-3970) so we have sufficient materials ready. This class will meet in the Library on October 9 and then

in the Music Room the following weeks.

==========================================================================================

Monday Evening Class – starting October 3 Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus – This class, led by Lyle Heggemeier, will focus upon the evidence that moved Nabeel Qureshi to

go from the Islamic faith to becoming a Christian. Participants in this class will learn about the Islamic faith, but also about

how we as Christians can more effectively witness to them. We’ll also learn more about what we believe. There is

“homework” for those willing to do it, which will enhance your learning and growth. Anyone wishing to attend this class is

asked to sign up in advance (at the Information Center or on your Connection Card) so that materials may be ordered for

you. This is an 8-session class, concluding the week after Thanksgiving and will meet each week in the Community Room

from 7:00-8:15 p.m.

Our youth group is in need of more adults to walk alongside our teens. It doesn’t mean you have to have all of the answers or

act like you do… Teens just need adults who are genuine and real with them. Advisors help with various youth events (but

not all events), some teach, while others prefer behind-the-scenes details. Please pray about being part of this dynamic and

growing ministry! If interested, please talk to Peter Johnson (773-4475 or [email protected]). Many thanks to all of our

The school year has begun. If your family is anything like our family, it means that your busy lives just got busier. School, homework, practices, extra-curricular activities, musical instruments, etc. The challenge for us as parents is how to find time for God in our busy lives and to demonstrate and reinforce that priority in our children.

IT IS A BUSY TIME FOR CHILDREN’S AND FAMILY MINISTRIES

September 18th was Bible Sunday. Three year olds received their own copy of My First Hands-On Bible. Children in third grade received the Hands-On Bible. Third graders will be using this in Sunday School through 6th grade. Does your child have reading minutes

each week? Consider having them read from their Bible one of the days each week. If your child (age 3-6th grade) has not received a Bible from us in the past, let us know and

we will get one for them.

Sunday School has begun. All of our children are learning about the story of Joseph, his brothers, and his time in Egypt. We hope that your children will be able to join us.

Sunday School offerings are once again being donated to charitable organizations. In

addition, the money from the bottle returns from the garbage cans located outside the FCCNS office and near the Jr. FLY room are donated as well. Or, you can bring your

cans directly to Nickelback Bottle and Can Return Center (located behind Hancock Paints on 659 Ridge Rd). You can just let them know that it’s for Faith Lutheran Church,

leave the cans and they will put the money in our account. A special thank you to the Doty family for bringing the cans and bottles from church to Nickelback.

SAVE THE DATE Trunk or Treat is on October 30 at 4:00 PM at Faith. Children (and adults) are welcome to wear their costumes

and go car to car “trunk or treating” in the parking lot. This is an all ages event. We would encourage Faith friends and members without young children to attend and hand out candy or help with logistics (parking lot safety, etc.).

Trunk decorating is encouraged but not required. There will be a trunk decorating competition (winner will get a trophy!). Also, The Reptile Guys will be back by popular demand and will do their show in the auditorium. If you

would like to help out with this event, contact Steve and Carrie Ford at [email protected].

WE ARE IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS

Children’s Ministry Planning Team: Help is needed to plan Children’s and Family Ministry Events. The role of this planning team would be to select dates for events, divide tasks necessary to hold events,

assist with “spreading the word” for events, and recruiting volunteers to help run the event. Events include: Family Game Nights, Trunk-or-Treat, The Gingerbread House Event, 4th-6th

Grade Fun Nights, and the Easter Egg Hunt. If you have any interest in being a part of this team, please let us know. Please note: The idea is for this team to meet only once or twice a

year and for each person to be involved in planning no more than one event during the year. If you think you might be interested, please let us know.

Annual Trunk or Treat Children in costume trick or treat from

trunk to trunk in the church parking lot. Trunk decorating is encouraged

but not required.

There will be a trophy awarded for the best decorated trunk.

Back by popular demand: Reptile Show

Come see a 12 foot snake, crocodilians, lizards and other Reptiles

October 30 at 4:00 at Faith Lutheran Church

Reptile show immediately followed by Trunk or Treating

Trick or Treating will be inside in the event of rain.

There is no cost to attend this event. Friends, family and guest are welcome.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD By Patsy Cook and Cathy Schmidt

We here at Faith want to be involved with Operation Christmas Child. It is a project of Samaritans Purse, an international

Christian relief organization headed by Franklin Graham. They collect Christmas boxes filled with gifts and deliver them in

the name of Jesus to children living in desperate situations around the world. There will be boxes for you to take and fill

individually or as a family. All the info you need will be provided when you pick up your box. We will have a table set up in

the Concourse starting October 9, and will be there each Sunday in October and the first two Sundays in November. We

need to have all boxes back by November 13. We will also be having a packing party using monetary donations received

from you and any of the stores we will be asking to help us.

Thank you so much for being a part of Operation Christmas Child this year.

Prime Time What is it like to serve your country on/in a SUBMARINE?

At our next Prime Time, our own Tom Hammond will show and tell us of his experiences while serving in the U.S. Navy

Submarine Service. WOW!! Tom’s presentation is very special and will be very interesting. SO, seniors: sign up at the

Information Center, bring a dish to pass, bring your own table service, and arrive in the Community Room by noon on

Monday, October 3.

Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry met in September after a summer break. Doris Florance started with a devotion. Sue Hutchings

and Doris Florance each came with a shawl they had made. Jane Smurthwaite sent in four shawls she had made. A

wonderful lady also donated a large bag of yarn which is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use. Thank you. Having

a shawl display this fall was discussed. The yarn was sorted. Lots of knitting, crocheting, and chatting was done. The meeting

closed with the blessing of the new shawls.

Our next meeting will be Monday, October 3, 7pm in Room 204. All are welcome. Any questions call Doris Florance at 236-

1597. If anyone knows of someone they would like to receive a shawl, just contact a member of the ministry and they would

be happy to help you select one. Also, if you would like to help knit shawls for our ministry but can’t make our meetings, you

could do so at home. There are patterns in manila envelopes across from the church office. Just place the completed shawl in

a bag with Prayer Shawl and your name on the bag and leave it in the church office. Your help would be appreciated.

Dorcas Circle The Dorcas Circle met in September after a summer break. It was a productive meeting. The ladies had been busy over the

summer. Norma Kreiss brought in bears she had put eyes on. Laurie Ebbecke made six dresses for ‘Dress a Girl’ and 15

walker bags for St. John’s. Ida Stiner made two dresses and Brigitta Lux came with a dress. Doris Florance made five dresses,

two walker bags, and six pillow cases. Nice work, ladies!

During the meeting, Halloween favors were made. Shirt savers, grieving packages, bears and hearts were cut out. Hearts,

pillows and bears were stuffed. Four shirt savers, seven pillows, and five walker bags were completed. Brigitta Lux and Doris

Florance took the grieving packages home to serge. Lois Jacob took the favors and pillows to Woodside Manor. Laurie

Ebbecke took the walker bags and some pillows to Darlene Byrns who will deliver them to St. John’s. Brigitta Lux took three

walker bags home to sew. Norma Kreiss took bears home to put eyes on them.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 13, 11:30 a.m. at church in Room 204. All are welcome. Bring your lunch and

join us for fellowship and work. Any questions call Doris Florance at 236-1597.
