SUMMER READING GUIDELINES 3RD-5TH GRADES

The following list of grade-appropriate activities below are to enhance the summer reading experience for students. The activities are reflective of different learning styles and several of them focus on high-order tasks as required by Language Arts Florida Standards. All students are expected to complete the following assignment: · Keep a vocabulary journal on the books you have read and make a list of words you have learned. Write the new word, copy the sentence in which it is used, write a definition using your own words, and draw a picture or symbol which reminds you what the word means. In addition to the vocabulary journal, students are also expected to complete ONE of the following activities. · Write a character diary, writing at least five journal entries as if you are the main character in the story. Write down events that happen during the story and reflect on how they affected the character and why. OR · You are the reporter. Write a front page news story or a report live from the scene.

The following list of grade-appropriate activities below are to enhance the summer reading experience for students. Include the title(s), one-sentence summary of each, and write two or three new words you have learned from your reading. In addition to the reading log/journal, students are also expected to complete ONE of the following activities. ·Make a poster about the book using one or two of the following media: finger-paint, water colors, crayons, chalk, real materials. Write an explanation of your poster. OR · Using a shoe box, create a diorama (three-dimensional scene which includes models of people, buildings, plants, and animals) of an important scene in the book. Write an explanation of your diorama.

SUMMER READING Miami-Dade County Public Schools recognizes the importance of ensuring that students continue

to strengthen reading skills, and develop a passion for reading beyond the time they spend in

school. Summer reading provides students with an opportunity for recreational reading, personal

exploration, and continued intellectual growth. Your child has been provided with a list of sug-

gested titles for summer reading and activities to do to enhance reading and learning experiences. Please

review with your child the summer reading requirements that have been established. Your child should

bring his/her reading assignment the first day of school, August 21, 2017.

Summer school is for retained third graders and select rising

third grade students. Parents of eligible students were notified

via a summer registration letter. Summer school will be held

at GKE-Sabal Palm Elementary School from July 5 - August

1, 2016. The hours are 8:35 a.m.—1:50 p.m.
