Brain Bee Winner NHS Raises Funds for ACS

On March 15th, the National Honor Society partici-pated in East Kendall Baptist’s Relay for Life. Through weeks of planning and fundraising prior to, as well as their participation the day of the event, they were able to raise over $1,000 for the American Cancer So-ciety. These students represented both Ferguson and the community with pride and were recognized during the event for their maturity and effort.

Sidharth Praveen took 3rd Place at the 3rd Annual Miami Brain Bee competition. The Miami Brain Bee was held on March

22nd as part of the Miami Brain Fair at the Miami Science Museum. Sidharth did a great job against some stiff competitors, making it through to the 5th round. Should this year’s first place winner choose not to go to the Brain Bee national competition, Sidharth is next in line to represent Miami/South Flori-da. (The second place winner is ineligible to attend.) “My congratulations to you on hav-ing educated such an outstanding student,”

commented Dr. Anthony A. Oliva of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University.

Culinary Masters

Ferguson Special Diploma students were awarded a $500 grant by Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. to create a school garden. The students in the program planted specialty crop

fruits, vegetables and herbs. The pur-pose of the project is to educate stu-dents about where food comes and the nutritional benefits of eating fruits, vegetables and herbs so the garden is an edible garden. “Our students benefit greatly from hands-on, real-life experi-ences that enrich the curriculum. With

this garden, the students will be able to work on both academic and functional living skills, from counting the amount of green peppers to enjoying a meal prepared by them, using the vegeta-bles harvested by them. It is a great way for the students to ap-ply what they learn in the classroom in engaging, meaningful ways,” explained program teacher Shiara Beers.

other teams to place first.
