Sinc 1977, t nti scool s bn involvd in t cycling pocss.

MeMBeR SChOOL PROFILeSHigh Mwing Schl f Wiltn, NH

High Mwing in Wiltn, NH is a Waldrf High Schl and has

been recycling since 1977. That in itself is quite an accmplish-ment. With the help f the entire

    schl, the recycling prgram is

lead and perated by Mike Wis-

niewski. If it wasnt fr Mike, wh

can nd a place for anydiscarded

item at the schl, the recycling

prgram wuldnt be where it is

    tday, active and successful.

    At High Mwing, there isnt

a thing that cant be recycled.

Every ofce has specic bins where people can place

their recyclables. In the drms there are clsets where thestudents separate their recyclables. The whle schl, frm

the teachers t the administratrs t the students and even

the kitchen staff, are all invlved in the recycling prcess.

We tured the kitchen where there were bins fr glass,

aluminum and paper. The kitchen is cmpletely rganic and they ck all their wn fd

which lked and tasted delicius. After students are dne eating n real plates and uten-

sils, they put their leftver scrap fd in a bin which is transferred t buckets utside. Af-

ter everydontiont the scrap fd buckets, sawdust with a wheat bran enzyme is sprinkled

on top of the food so it doesnt smell and/or attract ies. After approximately

10 buckets are lled, they are dumped into the Schools compost pile and turned weekly.

The schl has a shed where Mike

stres all the recyclables. It was ttally

amazing t see all the things he recycles.

Frm bttle caps t even the cllectin

of Stonyeld Farm yogurt bottles which

he returns to Stonyeld once he collects

enugh. on a daily basis, he makes drp-

ffs f High Mwings recyclables t the

    lcal Wiltn Transfer Statin.

High Mwing has als hsted the

CLUBs Can Cage and left it in their park-

ing lt t cllect cans. once the Can Cage

is full, they drive it t the transfer statin

    and cllect mney fr the

cans. In the last cuple fyears they have bught Rck

    Climbing Gear frm the

    prots of the cans.

    If yu are interested in

    speaking with Mike abut

    his recycling successes at

    the High Mwing Schl,

Students Push Fr A Greener Schl

A grup f Cntck Valley Reginal High Schl (CnVal) students decided t takematters int their wn hands and Go Gn. Ten students put tgether a detailed actinplan to initiate the rst ConVl Gn Wk. It was held in May, with the cperatin andapprval f the schls administratin and the district Fd Service department.

We wanted t d smething really nticeable t make peple aware, said MllyFerrill, a junir at CnVal. We didnt want t d smething slwly. It was sad t see allthe trash every day, said senir Michelle Russell. There was just s much and we felt like

we culd d smething t change it.Russell quickly frmed a grup including

Ferrill, senirs Samantha Bnd, Liam Hlding,Lila Trwbridge, and junirs Mlly Brwn,Carrie Lawlr, Katie Murphy, Charltte Welby

and Sarah Winship. The grup started meeting in Nvember and named itself Trash Talk, since themembers were discussing hw the schl culd becme mre envirnmentally cnscius.

The grup apprached Principal Sue Dell, wh came n bard as c-advisr withDana Wd, the Envirnmental Science teacher at CnVal wh was already wrking withher students n a prject t build a cmpst bin behind the schl cafeteria. Within days, mre than 50 students had signed n t help with Green Week effrts.

The Trash Talk students did their hmewrk by talking with sme f the experts inthe area. The kids went t Crtched Muntain t see their recycling prgram, said Dell, because theyre heavily invlved in recycling. The grup als visited Keene State Univer-sity t learn mre abut its recycling effrts, and participated in a Scial Entrepreneurs frState Leaders wrkshp.

Russell said the universities are fcused n sustainability and recycling effrts but thatvery few high schls have recycling prgrams.

One of the people at the workshop was saying how landlls in New Hampshire aregetting full, said Russell, and it made us want t d what we can fr sustainability.

In a matter f days, the students put tgether an actin plan that included daily activi-ties t ccur during Green Week. These included signage thrughut the schl; settingup recycling bins fr bttles and cans in the cafeteria and a Trash Pile-UP, a visual dem-nstratin f ne days wrth f student-generated trash, which was piled in the schlscurtyard t highlight the magnitude f the prblem.

Guest speaker Luc Mnzies f the Unin Mill in West Peterbrugh talked withstudents abut green building and sustainable practices. Ten minutes f lights utillustrated fr students the amunt f energy and mney saved by cnserving electric-ity. Al Gres mvie, An Incnvenient Truth, was screened and an rganic lunch wasserved n recyclable lunch trays n Friday. The rganic lunch included a turkey sandwichr wrap, rganic lettuce, tmat, chips and may with herbs frm the Suth MeadwSchl greenhuse. Kernel Bakery in Peterbrugh supplied the bread. our kitchen staff

was s supprtive, said Russell. our baker even made ckies with Recycle written nthem. We didnt have a lt f time t put it tgether, said Dnna Reynlds, districtfd service directr, but the kids respnse has been really psitive. Were hping t dmre like that.

The mst imprtant part f ur jb is educatin, said Wd. The rad blck thatwere cming up against is mney and we dnt think thats a gd enugh reasn. They (the students) tried t raise peples cnsciusness and theyve dne it really well, said Dell. Were hping it wnt be just a week. It shuld be every week f the year and a

way f life. The respnse has been s psitive all week, said Russell as she sat in the cafeteria

eating an rganic lunch. We want Gn Wk t happen every year. Russell went n tsay that the grup is currently in the prcess f pursuing grants t supprt its cnserva-tin effrts and t fund a prject t build a small building fr its recycling effrts.
