Story Writing Technique Workshops (Register for all four workshops for $250)

Character & Dialogue Sat Oct 8 9am–12pm $75 Character and dialogue are two powerful elements that drive a story’s plot. This workshop covers those aspects that make a character unique and memorable, such as physical features, expression, dialect, a homeland background, and a work history. We will explore how characters use language to portray inner traits, motivations, and description of others. We will also examine inner dialogue and various styles of emotional disclosure.

Point of View Sat Oct 15 9am–12pm $75 Who is telling the story? Seems obvious? Not so. Point of view can be elusive in story writing; it is an element that requires the utmost vigilance to maintain its consistency. We will explore the task of the storyteller in relation to that of the narrator.

Setting & Time Sat Oct 22 9am–12pm $75 Setting and time are interdependent—the time in history determines the details of the setting, and so their consistency with one another determines the plausibility of the stage on which the characters perform. Setting often changes, and it is related to, for example, weather conditions, historical events, season, and location.

Plot & Pace Sat Oct 29 9am–12pm $75 A writer must push the story forward, promote its unfolding. Using character, dialogue, setting, and other literary features, we can create a balanced story arc. The main plot and related sub–plots will be clarified, and we’ll explore the skill of weaving all the story elements together towards a stellar conclusion.
