    BOARD MEETING DATES

  • CO-PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE

NEWS & VIEWS News & Views is the publication of the Sarasota-Manatee Section of NCJW.

    Contact NCJW of Sarasota-Manatee at (941) 342-1855.

Co-Presidents: Marion Marshak and Marian Moss

Please email your articles to Marion ([email protected]) and Marian

    ([email protected]).

    We are excited and

enthusiastic to begin our term as

    co-presidents of the very special

    Sarasota Manatee Section. NCJW

has over a 120 year history of

    community service and advocacy.

We are the members who have

    made a difference in our

    communities by daring to change

the status quo. We have a faith in

the future and a belief in action!

    When we attended the 46th

    NCJW National Convention last

March, we were awed by our

    national organization and the

    impact NCJW has throughout our

    country. We returned home with

    many wonderful ideas, but also

    confident in knowing our Section

    is strong and thriving.

    Your Board has been busy

    planning an exciting year. We

    encourage you to get involved.

    NCJW’s CourtWatch project to

    assist abused women and children

by monitoring the judges in the

    Civil Domestic Violence

    courtrooms of Manatee County as

they decide whether or not to

    grant injunctions has had an

    impact. The Teen Dating

    Violence project, which presents

a film followed by a discussion to

    identify acceptable and non-

    acceptable dating behaviors,

    continues to be successful.

    We now have two puppet

    shows projects. “Someone to Talk

    To” teaches first graders to

    identify abusive situations and to

    seek help. Our “Diversity Puppet

    Show” for pre-schoolers has been

    very well received. NCJW’s

    volunteers continue to conduct

    visions and hearing screenings for

    school children

Our Section does not rest on

our laurels! We have a new

    project to make colorful and

    “snuggly” blankets to be

    distributed to children undergoing

    cancer treatments and other

    illnesses.

    Advocacy is very important to

    NCJW. In November, Florida will

    choose our next governor. Every

two years, we elect our U.S.

    Representative, and there are

many other local elections. It is

    imperative that we each choose

    the person who best represents

our values and that we encourage

others to do so as well.

    Our October program

    discusses Sex Trafficking which

we plan to evolve into a new

project. We know you will want

    to attend and learn more.

    PLEASE make sure our

    Financial Secretary, Debbie

    Engleson ([email protected]

    or 941-706-2239) has your correct

email address. You really do not

want to miss out on what’s

    happening. Check out our website

    and read your eblasts at

    ncjwsarasota-manatee.org. More

and more, this is how we will

    communicate with you.

    Plan to attend our meetings.

    Get involved in our projects.

    Eleanor Roosevelt remarked that

a woman is like a teabag – you

can’t tell how strong she is until

you put her in hot water. Jump in

with us. The water feels good!

  • COMMUNITY SERVICE Volunteer through NCJW community service projects

    Our Community Service committees

    and volunteers are all actively

    involved in their various activities

and enjoying the pleasure that comes

    from "giving back" to our

    community. The following is a

    review of the various community

    service projects our Section is

    currently involved in.

    COMPASSIONATE

    COMPANIONS AT

    KOBERNICK/ANCHIN

    Unfortunately our affiliation with

    Kobernick/Anchin has come to an

end due to the many administrative

changes at the facility. Our two

years of service was of great value

and meaning to our volunteers and to

the residents we served. A huge

thank you to Chair, Janet Moses, and

to all of our NCJW volunteers.

    HEARING SCREENING OF

    PRESCHOOLERS

New audiometers are needed and are

    being researched. We are working

    towards sponsorship/grant by a local

NCJW volunteers Joan Bour, Sue Reiss, and Debbie

Engleson prepare fleece to make blankets.

Finished blanket! Left to right: Janet Moses, Marion

    ENT practice. North County

    volunteers should contact Zelda

    Young at 941-341-0347 or

    [email protected]. For South

    County, contact Judy Zangwill at

    941-488-8128 or

    [email protected]. This has

    been a successful program, with

    more than 200 students tested.

Information letters are sent to each

parent. A very small percentage of

    students have been referred for

    further testing.

    VISION SCREENING

There are four teams of NCJW

    volunteers who conduct vision

    screening on preschoolers. This past

year they screened at 28 facilities,

524 preschoolers, of which 37 were

referred for professional care. If you

    are interested in testing preschoolers

    for vision problems contact Zelda

    Young at 941-341-0347.

    SOMEONE TO TALK TO

This very popular puppet show is

presented to first graders in the

    Sarasota County School System to

    increase awareness and identify

    mental, physical, verbal and sexual

abuse. We perform with our own

    stage using full size hand

manipulated puppets. If you wish to

    participate in this wonderful program

please contact Lita Press at 941-355-

    7078 or [email protected].

    HOPE HOUSE

Hope House is a safe house for

    abused women and children. We

    have been extremely active in

    supporting this organization with

    donations of pillows, blankets, night

    lights, towels, baby clothes, diapers,

pajamas and any other items that

    women with young children need.

This year we will collect items that

are in need as determined by the

Chairs and Hope House at our March

    meeting. This program is very

successful and one in which we take

great pride in the good we are doing

    TEEN DATING VIOLENCE

    PREVENTION

    Remember back to your teen

years? We felt grown up, but there

was a good deal of “childishness”

in us. We experienced all sorts of

    physical, emotional and social

    transformations. By the time we

    reached adolescence, we had

    plenty of experience with

friendships, but we may not yet

    have been prepared for intimate

    dating relationships. This holds

true for today’s teens as well. They

may have clear ideas about how

they should treat friends, but the

rules for dating can be fuzzy. We

    have developed a brief evaluation

    form for teachers and/or group

leaders and have had very positive

feedback. We hope to present a

program this fall with the Girl

    Scouts. If you are interested

    contact Marcia Dubrin at

    [email protected] or 941-309-

    3966 or Bonnie Sussman at

    [email protected] or 941-309-

    3444.

We are pleased to continue to make a difference in the lives of the people we help in our community. We

encourage all new members to participate in one of our section's most rewarding endeavors.

    H.I.P.P.Y.

    The Home Instruction for Parents

    of Preschool Youngsters is a

    program developed at the

    Research Institute of Hebrew

    University and promoted in Israel

and brought to the United States in

the early 80s by NCJW. The

    curriculum helps parents expose

    their children to letter recognition,

    writing & drawing, early literacy,

shapes & colors and singing and

rhyming. A community peer, as a

    “Home Visitor” works with the

    parents, guardians or

    grandparents to facilitate this

    learning experience. The Sarasota-

    Manatee Section donates

    backpacks to each graduating 5

year old in August as they move on

    to kindergarten and provides a

    monetary donation for books and

other supplies. We are pleased to

    announce that in addition to

Sarasota County, we will now be

    expanding this program to

    Manatee County.

    DIVERSITY PUPPET SHOW

Our first year was very successful,

    with presentations at 11

    preschools/VPK in Sarasota and

    Venice. The reception was

fantastic and we have been asked

to return by each school. We hope

to expand to Manatee County in

    the future and perhaps add

another team. The goals are to

teach a lesson on diversity which

    covers social/emotional/

    language/ communication skills

    and simultaneously meets the

    Emergent Literacy Standard

Guidelines for the State of Florida

4 year old programs. Our teams

utilize 5 hand puppets that “live” in

the jungle with each exhibiting a

    challenge of activity, shyness,

    visual impairment, physical

    challenges or non-English

    speaking. In the interactions, the

    children are asked questions about

    being different/accepting those

    that are different. Please contact

us if you are interested. Nancy

    Gorden at [email protected]

    or 941-918-1531 or Lauren

    Brownstein at

    BLANKEE BEE

Join us as we cut and tie to make

beautiful fleece blankets that will go

to children in our community who

need the comfort of a warm fuzzy.

    It’s easy! No sewing involved,

you’ll have fun and get to know

    CourtWatch

    CourtWatchers observe the

    proceedings in the Civil

    Domestic Violence

    courtrooms of Manatee

County when people are requesting an “Injunction

for Protection” against a partner who has been

abusive. Women who have been victims of

domestic violence are often victimized a second

time by an indifferent court system. By gathering

relevant data and eventually presenting the data to

court officials, we hope to help prevent this

    victimization from happening.

In the meantime, CourtWatchers and advocates for

the petitioners from Hope Family Services have

observed that the very fact that we are watching

the proceedings has helped to create more balanced

and fair treatment of the women. We believe it has

even resulted in batterers being required to attend

    battery prevention programs.

Our data is also helping the staff at Hope Family

Services to better prepare women for what they

may face when they go to court. At the present

time, we are watching the court on Tuesdays and

limited Wednesdays. Each pair of volunteers

attends court once per month or once every other

    month.

We are in need of more volunteers in order to

cover all of the hearings, both morning and

afternoon. If you are interested in becoming a

CourtWatcher, or would like more information,

please contact Ellen Zipin at [email protected].

Cathy Markowitz, Bee Volk, Mimi Seitman and

Caroline Zucker attended the 22nd annual

HIPPY graduation at the Newtown Estates Gym

in Sarasota on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

The 3, 4 and 5 year olds, attired in their white

caps and gowns, marched in with big grins on

their faces to the delight of the family members,

friends and guests. Each of the graduating 5

year olds received a diploma, a back pack and

bag of sundries in preparation for their move to

kindergarten. The Director of the program, Jone

Williams and Coordinator, Valerie Reeves acted

    as Mistresses of Ceremony.

    Representatives from the Sarasota YMCA,

    Sarasota School Board, Sarasota County

Commissioner and NCJW's co-Vice President of

    Community Services, Paula Kaufman gave

    greetings and congratulations. The audience

sang "Twinkle, Twinkle H.I.P.P.Y. Stars" to the

graduates and then shared in refreshments. The

Sarasota-Manatee Section of NCJW is proud of

its contribution to this successful program,

which lights the spark in so many youngsters for

the love of learning. A good time was had by

    all.

    ~Cathy Markowitz, Co-VP Community Service

The Home Instruction Program for Pre-School

    Youngsters (H.I.P.P.Y.) was established in

Jerusalem to assist at-risk children from all

segments of Israeli society during the 1960-

1970s. It was expanded to the US during the

1980-1990s and became an independent not-for-

profit organization. By 1999, H.I.P.P.Y. USA

had 121 programs in 28 states and a federal study

    concluded that H.I.P.P.Y. graduates out-

    performed their peers in pre-kindergarten

    programs.
