“Little things seem like nothing, but they give peace,

like those meadow flowers which individually seem

odorless but all together perfume the air.”

- Georges Bernanos

In Honor of Christine Hillmer In 1974, Christine was involved in an accident and was not expected to survive. She experienced a traumatic brain injury and miraculously beat the odds. Her sister Cheri Morrow is a proud BIND volunteer who has campaigned in honor of Christine’s 40 amazing years as a brain injury survivor. We’d like to thank Jon & Cathy Morrow, The Hodge Family, The Gwosdz Family, The Spellman Family and the Aycock Family for their gifts to BIND in her honor.

With 1.7 million new brain injuries each year in the US, you probably know or will know someone who needs the services provided by a brain injury clubhouse. Chances are, their stories may be similar to those of our BIND members. You can honor a loved one and support the work and mission of BIND with a tribute gift. The money raised through tribute giving this holiday season will be used to purchase computers, office supplies and furniture for the BIND Clubhouse. For all tribute gifts received between November 1st and December 15th, BIND will send you and your honoree a personalized note and acknowledgement in the BIND Winter Newsletter. This is a convenient way for you to memorialize, honor, or celebrate people and events you care about while also making a tax-deductible donation prior to year’s end. Tribute contributions can be made on our website at www.thebind.org or by check mailed to: BIND, PO Box 729, Prosper TX 75078. Please include the name and address of the survivor, caregiver, or family you wish to recognize with your gift. We appreciate your support for brain injury survivors in our community and wish you a joyful holiday season.

Side by Side Visit Q & A Catching up with Jim and Jeannette Goodman

Jim and Jeannette had the opportunity to visit Side by Side Brain Injury Clubhouse (www.sidebysideclubhouse.org) in Stone Mountain, Georgia this August. It was their first experience visiting an IBICA member and they are so excited to share it with us!

Q: What was your first impression of Side by Side?

Jim: When I opened the clubhouse door it was fantastic. I loved the two levels and

elevator. Jeannette: I was amazed at how

big it was.

Q: What types of things did you see their members engaged in?

Jim: In the computer area the members type

up and print the newsletter, daily tasks and other forms. Several members were

preparing the lunch. Jeannette: Some

members were handling the maintenance

duties and some were working in the garden.

Q: Is there something that was most impressive to you about their program or facility?

Jim: Birthday cards and thank you notes are

sent from the Business Center. The

members give tours of the facility.

Jeannette: The program is extremely well organized.

Q: How would you describe the power of membership to someone who’s never been to a brain injury clubhouse?

Jim: It makes the members feel that they can

relearn skills and contribute something to

our community again. It might be to return

to work or keep the clubhouse going. Jeannette: It is heartwarming to see

individuals who might otherwise be at home

doing nothing being productive and enjoying

themselves as part of a team.

Q: What surprised you the most about your visit to Side by Side?

Jim: The program began in the basement of

an office building. Jeannette: The number

of staff.

Q: How long has Side by Side been serving adults with brain injury in Georgia?

Jim: I believe they opened in 1999.

Q: How or what can BIND learn from your experience at Side by Side?

Jim: The members who are not covered by insurance or other outside source pay a fee

for attending. Everyone pays $3.00 a day for

lunch or brings their own. Jeannette: BIND

can see how to operate a well-run program.

Also how important it is for the members to contribute to the volunteer programs offered

in the community.

Q: What else would you want our friends in Texas to know about your visit to Side by Side?

Jim: The benefit to people who have

suffered a traumatic brain injury is

immeasurable. Everyone deserves the opportunity to work to his or her potential.

The 2nd Annual Benefit Luncheon & Silent Auction Allison Jordan, MS, CF - SLP

BIND Volunteer

The Brain Injury Network of Dallas set a goal for expansion over the past year. Accomplishments have included one crucial addition to our organization, Development Director, Mary Martha Stinnett, legitimizing and promoting continued progress, and also the ability to rent space for the beginning stages of the clubhouse model. People returning from last year’s event spoke of the increased number of valuable auction items, while new faces entered the event with curiosity and excitement from the hype that last year’s luncheon created.

This year’s fundraiser luncheon, held again at the Marriott Town Legacy Center on October 25th, had an air of confidence and control over what BIND is as an organization and the mission it has set. BIND Member Carrie Price opened the luncheon with a welcome speech to remind the returning guests of our purpose and the curious minds of 1st time attendees what we aim to achieve. No great event goes without surprises. The main focus of BIND founder Valerie Gotcher’s opening speech was to honor Jeannette and Jim Goodman, presenting them with a plaque signifying their generous monetary and volunteer efforts over the years. However, Kevin McIntyre stepped up to the microphone and tearfully thanked our fearless leader for turning the idea of BIND into a reality for so many volunteers, board and committee members, brain injury survivors and caregivers. Video and audio director, Dean Stone, also a board member of BIND produced yet another powerful video with a defined message which included statistics and research, reinforcing the need for a clubhouse model in Texas which received praise and applause from an attentive audience. Will Dane, recently appointed Texas Division Director of the Brain Injury Association of America spoke with heartfelt honesty about his commitment to increasing awareness for brain injury support throughout the state of Texas and the significance

of organizations such as the Brain Injury Network of Dallas. He then commented on the time when he first received a list of people highly recommended to contact regarding their commitment to brain injury communities in Texas and Valerie’s name was on it. With the gusto that only a truly experienced and passionate development director can elicit, Mary Martha Stinnett stated the importance of giving whatever monetary support is possible to help BIND continue their efforts on the path to opening the first clubhouse model in Texas.

Laughs were shared, lunch was devoured and guests went home with sought after auction items collected over the year. After the payments were made and the funds were collected, a total of $8,000 will go towards the initial mission of a clubhouse model with one goal in mind, Texas is next.

We extend our thanks to the following sponsors: Pate Rehabilitation LearningRX Lift-Aids, Inc. Warm Springs Rehab Hospital Accel Rehab Hospital In Home Wholisticare & Wellness The Goodman Family In memory of baby Janet Fresh Spin DJ Spectaveris, Inc. Print City

And we offer special thanks to our board members Karl Heller and Kevan Beijan for their participation in the program this year.
