Program Notes
Gustav Theodore Holst was an English composer, arranger and teacher. He was born in Cheltenham, England to a family of Swedish, Latvian and German origin. In his youth, Gustav played both violin and piano. He hated practicing the violin, but enjoyed the piano. Later, he also played the trombone. Holst left Cheltenham to study at the Royal College of Music in London in 1983. Like many musicians of his generation, Holst came under Richard Wagner’s spell. At RCM, Holst met Ralph Vaughan Williams as a fellow student of music. Vaughan Wil-liams became a lifelong friend and had more influence on Holst’s music than any-body else. Holst’s work included operas, chamber, vocal, and orchestral music of many differ-ent styles, based on subjects as varied as folk songs, Tudor music, Sanskrit literature, astrology, and contemporary poetry. His great interest in Eastern mysticism can be heard in his settings of Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda and his short opera Savitri. Amongst his musical work, The Planets Suite was, by far, Holst's largest orchestral work - a suite of seven unique movements. Work on this composition of monumen-tal scope began in 1914 and was completed in 1916. The first complete public perfor-mance of The Planets was held on November 15, 1920. The suite's success was unri-valed, and remained so to this day. Surprisingly, Holst was dismayed by the interna-tional popularity of The Planets - it was his first and only composition to reach such a wide audience, He thought of it as very atypical of his composition style. The con-cept of the work is astrological rather than astronomical, which is why Earth is not included. Each of the seven movements is intended to convey ideas and emotions associated with the influence of the planets on the psyche. The suite opens with Mars, the Bringer of War, dominated by a strong rhythmical figure which continues through the entire movement. The quiet but menacing 5/4 in the beginning suggests the gathering of troops and mounting tension. When the full force of the fanfare is released, it is obviously symbolic of the terrible destruction which war brings. Without question, The Planets has risen to the top of symphonic works of the 20th century. Its unique style and musical drama have been emulated in many of today's music genres, from serious concert music (including a band version) to block-buster movie scores. The movie Star War’s Imperial March is said to be one of the many modern take offs of Mars. It is also used in the game Super Mario Bros. 3, in Dark Land. The Planets #1 FAQ: "What about Pluto?!?" This is almost always the first question asked about The Planets. The reason there is not a movement dedicated to Pluto is that Pluto was not discovered until 1930, 14 years after the completion of the suite. Holst died less than four years later and nev-er had a chance to write a movement to honor the newest found planet. In 2006 and 90 years after Holst completed the Planets Suite, the International Astronomical Union downgraded the status of Pluto to a dwarf planet.
As a rule I only study things that suggest music to me…
Recently the character of each planet suggested a lot to me.
~Gustav Holst, 1914

Program Notes
Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany. He wrote symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano works, and choral compositions, and was the great master of symphonic and sonata style in the second half of the 19th century. He’s viewed as the protagonist of the Classical tradition of Joseph Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. In 1853 Brahms was introduced to composer and music critic Robert Schumann. The two men grew close, with Schumann seeing Brahms a great hope for the future of music. He dubbed Brahms a genius and praised the "young eagle" publicly in a fa-mous article and made the young composer a known entity in the music world. Throughout his life Brahms worked with choirs and had a continuous interest in pro-ducing music for them. He had a profound understanding of their capabilities. His choral music makes learned and creative reference to the great masters of the Ba-roque, yet he followed the lead of Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann in the Chorlied adapting the form to his own ends. In 1887 Brahms composed the eleven Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103. These ‘gypsy songs’ combine the appeal of his two most popular marketed works, the Hungarian Dances and the Liebesliederwaltzes. They form a sequence of dance-songs for vocal quartet, but with the rhythms and exotic shading of the Hungarian Dances. The Fünf Gesänge, Op. 104 date mostly from 1888. Beauty of sound and relaxed mastery of medium here combine with texts of nostalgic import to produce one of Brahms’s most exquisitely despondent works. The group contains Im Herbst (In Au-tumn), perhaps the culmination of Brahms’ secular choral writing. Brahms final set of vocal quartets, the Sech Quartette, Op. 112, combines the differ-ent characters of Opp. 103 and 104, as if tidying up unfinished business. Four more Zigeunerlieder become Nos 3-6, but the prime interest is in Nos 1 & 2. These two quartets are settings of short depressive poems by Franz Kugler. They are typically serious late Brahms in their autumnal tone and melancholy longing. No. 1 Sehnsucht (Desire) depicts the result of thwarted desire with its tightly wrought and powerful counterpoint. No. 2 Nächtens, a setting of a malevolent night examines the fear of death. Nos. 3-6 Vier Zigeunerlieder (Four Gypsy Songs) are simple, lively and folk-like in their charm, musically and emotionally the antithesis of the first two quartets of this Opus.
It is not hard to compose, but what is fabulously hard is
to leave the superfluous notes under the table.
~Johannes Brahms Johannes Brahms (7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897)
Nächtens Nächtens wachen auf die irren,
Lügenmächt'gen Spukgestalten, Welche deinen Sinn verwirren. Nächtens ist im Blumengarten Reif gefallen, daß vergebens
Du der Blumen würdest warten. Nächtens haben Gram und Sorgen
In dein Herz sich eingenistet, Und auf Tränen blickt der Morgen.
During the Night At night awaken those wandering,
deceptive phantoms that bewilder the mind.
At night in the flower garden frost falls so that it is futile
to wait for flowers to bloom. At night grief and worry nestle within your heart
and the morning gazes in upon tears. ~Franz Theodor Kugler, Gedichte
