Welcome to

Dear St. Paul,You wrote in your letters how thankful you were for all God’s gifts. I want to be thankful for all God gives me: [pause now to call to mind some of those gifts]. All of these are from God who loves me so much. Most especially, I want to be thankful for the gift of faith. St. Paul, pray for me that I may have a strong faith, a great love for Jesus, and a grateful heart. Like you, I want to become more like Jesus and help others to learn about Him.

Hello from JClub, where the “J” stands for Jesus.

We all enjoy stories. When we hear stories from our family, we might find out where our relatives grew up, what school was like then, and the music they listened to. In school we hear stories about what happened in our city, our country, and the world. Stories are important and we often share them with others through books, movies, and the news.

The Bible is a collection of wonderful stories about God and His people. In this issue of JClub you will read about the story of creation and how God made everything. We have so much to thank God for!

Many people through the years have lived the teachings of Jesus in very heroic ways and each has an amazing life story. In “Meet the Author” you will read about one of these people, St. John Bosco, the patron saint of young people.

Don’t forget to check out our JClub book list and choose some awesome titles to learn more about our faith through the lives of the saints and other stories.

God bless you and your family, Sr. Lily & Sr. Carly

Make Gratitude a Part of Every Day!

Being grateful is easy to do and has amazing benefits. There are so many things to be grateful for! It’s just a matter of stopping to think of them. It could be that you feel gratitude for what you have, for kindnesses others have shown you, for feeling well, or just having a day without too many troubles.

There are also things that can make it hard for us to be grateful. Sometimes we feel angry, or jealous, or hurt by others. But when something like that happens, catch yourself. Stop and think of something good in your life—right at that moment. Is it the beautiful weather? Do you like an activity you’ve been doing? Did a teacher, or friend, or family member say something that made you smile? That’s what I do when I’m feeling a bit down or lonely. I press the pause button in my mind and remember something that I have to be grateful for. It lifts my spirits every time.

For me, the end of the day is extra-special. Every night, after I say a bedtime prayer, I make a list in my mind of specific things to thank God for. For example, I’m always grateful when my daughter and grandson Skype with me, and I’m grateful each day I feel well enough to exercise.

I’ve found that it’s almost impossible to be grateful and unhappy in the same instant. Gratitude is a route to finding peace and happiness. There is so much to thank God for in this amazing world, even when things are rough. We just have to be open to recognizing the many gifts we are given throughout our day. Once you start a gratitude habit, you will be amazed at how much sweeter your days can become. You will begin noticing the positive things that happen in your life more and more.

Here are some things you can do to make gratitude part of your life:

1. Make gratitude a part of your nightly routine. Before sleep, take a minute or two to reflect on the day asking yourself: “Which of God’s blessings and gifts did you receive?” Try to think of five specific things.

2. Treasure what has made you grateful. Share your list of blessings aloud with the person who tucks you in or write them down in a journal.

3. Remember to be grateful for forgiveness and second chances. As part of your nightly prayers, ask yourself if there is one thing you wish you had done differently during the day. Let God know you are sorry, and ask for God’s help to do better in the future.

4. Spread the message of gratitude. Saying thank you more often to the other people in our lives makes the world a more joyful place to live in.

Try any or all of the ideas above or come up with your own. I think you’ll agree that there are many good reasons to make gratitude a part of every day!

Reflect:

God Made Everything Genesis 1, 2

There was a time when there was no world. There was no sky and sun, no moon and stars. There were no trees or mountains or oceans. There were no animals and there were no people. There was only God. Then God began to make the world and everything in it.

God made everything! Everything God created is a sign of His infinite love for us. Not only did God make oceans and mountains, animals and insects, He made you and me. He gave each of us special gifts: our body and soul, our mind and heart. With these gifts we can know how much God loves us, we can love others, and we can care for the world around us. Thank you God for all your gifts!

Check out this story in the Bible! Read Genesis 1 and 2.

God made everything out of nothing, just by wanting it to happen. Only God can do that! You can make things out of clay or paper. But only God can make things out of nothing at all. We call this “creating.”

God made the sky above us with the sun and moon and stars. He made all kinds of plants and trees. He made fish to swim in the water and birds to fly in the air. He made every kind of animal that lives on the earth.

God looked at the world and everything that he had made. He saw how beautiful it all was. Then God made the first man. He gave the man a soul that would live forever and a mind that could know who God was. God named the man Adam.

Page 5: Fall 2015 JClub Magazine & Catalogue

5 www.JClubCatholic.orgPauline Books & Media

God wanted to put Adam in charge of all the animals that he had made. So God brought the animals to Adam to see what name he would give each one. And when Adam was finished naming all God’s creatures, he said, “None of the animals are like me.”

Then, so Adam wouldn’t be alone, God made the first woman. God brought the woman to Adam to be his partner. Adam named her Eve. They lived happily in the world God made.

Discussion Questions:

Only God can make things out

of nothing.

Meet an Author! An Interview with Sr. Emily Beata, author of Saint John Bosco: Champion for the Young

Why did you write this book?

When I was growing up, I loved reading about the saints. I enjoyed learning about their lives. Each saint has such a different story—some were priests or religious sisters, some were married, some were young, and some were old. But they all loved God very much, and they all found different ways of helping people. They inspired me to want to love God and help people, too.

I wrote this book so that young people could learn about a saint whom I enjoyed learning about. St. John Bosco has a great story. A lot of interesting and amazing things happened to him when he was young, so he is a wonderful saint for young people to read about. Plus, this year is St. John Bosco’s 200th birthday—he was born on August 16, 1815!

What is your favorite scene in the book?

My favorite scene in the book is when St. John Bosco puts on an acrobat show! He teaches himself to juggle, walk a tightrope, do handstands, and other tricks. But before he starts the show, he reviews the homily from Mass and leads the crowd in the rosary. He wants to help people know God and help them have a good time at the same time!

What can kids and teens today learn from this saint?

I think kids and teens today can learn three big things from St. John Bosco. First, he had a great sense of humor. He taught young people to have a sense of humor and to be happy because God loves them. Second, St. John Bosco always believed in God’s plan for him. He believed that God wanted him to be a priest, and he believed

that God wanted him to help young people. Even when things got difficult, he trusted that God would make a way for this to happen. And third, St. John Bosco had a great devotion to Mary, Help of Christians. He even built a church in her honor! He told his followers that Mary would always help them, no matter what. See what you can learn from reading the book!

What would St. John Bosco say to kids and teens today?

St. John Bosco often said to young people in his day, “Be happy—God wants you to be happy!” He would say the same thing to kids and teens today! He would also tell kids and teens to remember two things: first, God loves you and he will always love you. Second, because God loves you, you can trust him and tell him anything. Finally, the last thing St. John Bosco said to his followers was, “Love one another. Mary, Help of Christians, will always help you.” We can pray through St. John Bosco’s intercession and ask God to help us live with great love and trust just like St. John Bosco did.
