First Letter to Utah NATP

Interview with Charles Daud, founding member

P A G E 3

As we are celebrating our 25th anniversary as a state chapter, we thought we would interview Charles Daud, one of the original members and still a mem-ber of the Utah Chapter. Chapter: To begin, let’s get to know you personally a little better. You are married and live in Herriman. Do you have children or grand-children? Charles: Yes, we have one son, two grandsons, and two granddaughters. Chapter: How long have you lived in Utah? Charles: About 38 years. Chapter: Have you always worked for yourself? Charles: Yes Chapter: (Chuckle), You’re a man of few words. You are a founding member of Utah NATP. What was the organization like 25 years ago? Charles: I joined NATP in 1988, Kim Brown contacted about 25 members in Utah, and she got in touch with national about the process to form a state chapter. I recall we spent about a

year getting the organization and a committee put to-gether. Chapter: Why did you choose NATP over some of the other professional organi-zations? Charles: The research ser-vice that NATP provides gave me a good reason to join NATP. Especially consid-ering that in the 1980s the internet was not available or commonly used. At that time, I still used a pencil and paper forms, erasers and cal-culators to prepare tax re-turns. I had to research books to find answers and it was very convenient to just call NATP and ask them to research the answer if I had a question. Chapter: Have the objec-tives of Utah NATP changed or improved over the years? Charles: I think the objec-tives have improved in the area of education and re-searching tax issues. Chapter: Has the education offered by NATP improved over the years or do you feel it has always been the best? Charles: It has improved. It used to be that there was only a one day conference with limited educational sub-

jects hosted in a small Las Vegas hotel. Now you can go to a full four day conference in nice five star hotels that rotate around the country and they have a large variety of educational subjects. They also went from simple news-letters to a host of publica-tions. Chapter: You have attended the NATP National Confer-ence as long as I have known you, what would you say to members who have never attended a National Conference? Charles: I have attended since 1990. It is worth it to attend the conference, and receive about 28 CPE’s in four days. It’s great to fulfill the CPE requirements in such a short time. And the speakers are experienced tax practitioners that actually deal with the current tax is-sues. It’s great! Chapter: You have served on the Utah NATP board several times and in several positions. What has been most rewarding in your ser-vice? Charles: The most reward-ing thing is working with tax practitioners who are very dedicated, dependable and Cont. next pg.

hardworking. And everyone on the board does their part to make our events successful. Chapter: What would you say to members who haven’t taken the opportunity to serve or are a little nervous to serve on the board? Charles: By serving on the board, it gives you opportunities to net-work. Everyone on the board has had different experiences with tax issues, clients, and auditing and it’s great to be able to learn from them.

Chapter: If you could pick one thing that has brought you the most benefit from your NATP membership, what would it be?

Charles: I took an auditing class from NATP and learned how to prepare for the audit, how to re-search the applicable tax code. I was able to find a resolution for one of my clients and help reduce their tax liability. NATP has helped me be a better tax practitioner.

Chapter: How do you envision Utah NATP twenty-five years from now?

Charles: In this global economic environment, I envision the chap-ter will expand to educate practi-tioners on issues related to some-one doing business in foreign countries or foreigners doing busi-ness in the United States.

Thank you Charles for taking time to share with us!

Voluntary Contributions on the Utah Income Tax Form Every year, Utahns have the opportunity to give to a select number of charitable organizations on their Income Tax Form. By designating an amount either from their income tax return or personal funds, Utahns can easily give generously and confidently. All organizations shown in the “Part 4 - Voluntary Contributions” section have been approved by the Utah Tax Commission. One of the eight options on the 2014 Income Tax Form is the Pamela Atkinson Homeless Trust Fund. For nearly 20 years, the Pamela Atkinson Homeless Trust Fund has leveraged income tax donations for investments in homelessness and continues to provide a flexible state-funding source focused on delivering critical services. All donations to the trust fund go directly to organizations statewide that provide vital services and assistance to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
