iMPACT: A Service Learning Seminar
This course introduces the concept of deliberative service learning—
a pedagogical method for high student impact and greater civic
engagement. The marriage between deliberative pedagogy and service-
learning is a compelling union to introduce students to high-impact learning
experiences, cultivate civic responsibility and agency, and further the skills
needed to realize the promise of their education—the power to effect
change. This course broaches these topics, offering basic concepts with a
focus on the practical matters of using deliberative service learning across
disciplines.
Topic areas may include service as a foundation for broader civic
engagement, deliberative dialogue, service ethics and practical logistics,
leadership and character development, community-classroom partnerships
and relationship building, and the use of live event learning. Throughout
the course, participants will be designing their own service learning
blueprint (including points of entry, connections to course specific learning
outcomes, community partnerships, logistics/procedures, and assessment)
and, as a culminating experience, will present this blueprint to the other
participants in the course.
