Summer is nearing an end and so is the City’s Summer Science

Series that occurred in both the Richland Library, Community

Center, and throughout the park system. The various programs

were a huge accomplishment and I want to thank everyone that

contributed to their success! I also would like to call special

attention to the top notch quality of our little league and soft-

ball fields this year maintained by City Staff. The ball fields at

Badger Mountain Community Park and at the Columbia Play-

fields are maintained at a level that attracted several statewide

tournaments this year. These out of town visitors stayed in

Richland hotels, ate at Richland restaurants, and supported

your local economy. It’s my philosophy that the City’s park sys-

tem is an important contributor to the City’s quality of life and

our economic well-being. Your Parks and Public Facilities staff

deserve a big thank you for their hard work and dedication to

make Richland facilities stand out from the crowd.

This fall we plan to focus special attention on the City’s

“walkability” programming. Richland is a walkable community

and we plan to showcase a few facilities through hikes and oth-

er guided walks.

Fall also welcomes registration for the annual basketball league.

The popular program promotes sportsmanship and camarade-

rie while engaging in friendly competition. All skill levels are

welcome!

Please mark your calendar for September 5th and join us for the final outdoor event of the summer – Kids Fun Friday at

Badger Mountain Community Park. Come enjoy a final session at the splash pad, participate in a number of games and ac-

tivities, enjoy food from participating vendors, and watch “The Lego Movie,” the last outdoor movie of the season.

Thank you for your continued support and use of City facilities. Please do not hesitate to reach out via social media or our

website to provide feedback.

For many of us the arrival of fall can bring feelings of con-

tentment as we anticipate (or dread) cooler weather, busi-

er schedules, mild days where a cozy sweater feels just

right, and excitement over the prospect of robust meals

and a sense of turning in for the winter. As Chair of the

Parks and Recreation Commission, this time of year feels

more like a new year than the actual beginning of the calen-

dar year. The reason is, I’m a school teacher and the arrival

of fall means balancing schedules, meals, kids’ activities, and

so on. This sometimes frantic change of pace tends to af-

fect the available time for a dreaded ghost that haunts

many of us in our society.

What I find reassuring about this particular ghost is that

many people have a knack for busting it. They have

workout routines, healthy eating plans, discipline and so on.

But, for others of us, we can feel daunted and terrified

about how to deal with it and perhaps this overwhelming

fear keeps us from facing it.

I believe the solution here is not overly complicated or

costly. On a very practical level, we have great facilities and

activities in the City of Richland that can assist us in im-

proving our overall health. Whether it be checking out the

Urban Green Belt Trail, figuring out where Chamna is, dis-

covering the disc golf course in Lawless Park (you don’t have to play, just walk around the course), or taking a hike

with our Park Ranger, these activities could take the edge off consuming some Halloween candy or another slice of

pumpkin pie. But I believe our overall health isn’t just about our bodies, we need activities that can be mentally

soothing. My goal going into fall is to have a healthy attitude about the change in pace and participating in activities

that bring an overall sense of well-being: taking in the beauty of the changing season, maybe collecting some leaves,

and knitting a tree sweater. I hope as you go through the Fall Activity guide, you too find an activity that brings you

comfort and satisfaction.

sense of feeling like targets for whatever dangers may be

lurking. Knowing how to protect yourself empowers

your capabilities, softens the range of feeling powerless,

while heightening your sense of awareness. Millions of

women are attacked each year and preparation is the key

to survival. Statistics show that 1 in 3 women will be

involved in a sexual assault at some point in their lives.

90% of the time, the threat is someone known to the

woman.

The Richland Police Department is offering a 'Rape Ag-

gression Defense' (R.A.D.) class to interested women

ages 12 and up. The R.A.D. system is a comprehensive,

women-only course that begins with awareness, preven-

tion, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing

on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is

not a martial arts program. Each student will be provided

a workbook/reference manual. The manual outlines the

entire Physical Defense Program for reference and con-

tinuous personal growth, and is the key to R.A.D's 'free

lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.

Super Tips

Columbia Point Golf Course opened in Septem-

ber of 1997 as a renovation of the original Sham

Na Pum Golf Course. With the continuous resi-

dential and commercial development of this area,

Columbia Point Golf Course functions as a

unique natural filter for storm drains and water

runoff form streets and parking lots. Mature turf

contains a vast fibrous root system, and due to

its chemical properties, binds many pollutants

that can be broken down by soil micro-

organisms before reaching groundwater. There

are over a hundred grass swales (called dry

wells) throughout the golf course that act as natural catch basins from storm water run-off (see photo for

example).

It’s been a long, hot summer and we have set a

few record highs this year…that’s saying some-

thing considering the history of this area. I for one

am looking forward to cooler temperatures com-

ing this fall. Thanks for reading and I hope you

take the time to visit your Columbia Point Golf

Columbia Point Golf Course

Columbia Point Golf Course is an upscale, daily fee facility built and

owned by the City of Richland. It is a challenging course for all levels

of golfers and is located on the eastern side of the Cascade Moun-

tains adjacent to the Columbia River. It boasts a variety of tee boxes

and measure 6,571 yards from the Championship tees. This James J.

Engh design features mounded, rolling fairways and large, undulating

greens. The parkland-style course opened in 1997. Columbia Point

has a fully-stocked golf shop, cafe, covered patio and driving range

complete with extra amenities including men's and ladies' lockers

available for daily use. The clubhouse matches the natural beauty of

course at Columbia Point. The covered patio with a panoramic view

of the front nine complements the spacious golf shop and indoor

cafe seating. Columbia Point was ranked 4th in Washington in 2010 by Western Golf Alliance - Where You Can Rip It.

The Inter-Mountain Alpine Club (I-MAC) was organized in October 1948 to bring together those of us

who find particular pleasure in shaking the dust of civilization from our boots and hitting the high country

trails whenever the opportunity arises. I-MAC's primary purpose is to encourage the enjoyment of the

outdoors and to promote hiking, XC Skiing, snowshoeing and other activities. We also hope to provide

the stimulus and opportunity for the beginner to enjoy the unique satisfaction that comes from attaining

the heights under their own power and to gain a deeper appreciation of Mother Nature as a result of

knowing her first hand.

We welcome guests on all club trips. Anyone wishing to take part only needs to register with the trip

leader. Longer trips have more advanced sign-up deadlines so check well in advance!

For I-MAC's schedule and more information check out the website at www.imacnw.org.

Sports Concussion and Head Injuries (Zachary Lystedt Law)

A concussion is a brain injury and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head

or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. They can range from mild to severe

and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are po-

tentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and

managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or bump on the head can be serious. You can’t see a concussion

and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up

right after the injury, or can take hours to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if

you notice the symptoms or signs of concussion yourself, seek attention right away. For current and up-to-date in-

formation on concussions go to: www.cdc.gov/concussion
