Designs used: Oak Leaf (Applique) - Lg Maple Leaf (Applique) - Lg Birch Leaf (Applique) - Lg These designs are also available in the following design packs: A Leaves & Frames Design Pack (Applique) - Lg Finished size: 46 1/2 inches long by 24 inches high. This size will vary depending on the size of your mantel.

Begin by preparing the fabric for the front panel. Decide how long you would like the scarf to be. Measure the length of the area you are covering, and add one inch to the measurement (ours measures 47 1/2 inches wide). Cut a piece of fabric to the length you just measured, 8 inches high. Ours measures 47 1/2 inches long by 8 inches high. This is the top piece of the front panel.

Then, cut a piece of the print fabric to the length and 5 inches high (ours is cut to 47 1/2 inches long by 5 inches high). This is the bottom piece of the front panel. Align one of the long edges of the bottom piece with the long bottom edge of the top piece, right sides together, and pin in place.

Sew a 1/2 inch seam along the pinned edge only. Then, lay the fabric flat and press the seam with an iron.

Sew a 1/8 inch seam right along the folded edge of the print fabric.

If you have embroidery software, print a templates of the designs to use for placement. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the designs to help with placement and centering. We are placing the designs across the top of the front panel (we used 6 leaf

templates). Position the templates about 3 1/4 inches from the center seam to the center of the designs. Also, place the design templates 2 1/2 inches apart and about 1 3/4 inches from the outer edges of the fabric. Tape the upper corners of the templates in place with a bit of masking tape.

Next, lay strips of masking tape under the horizontal and vertical axis lines of each template. Poke a hole in the center of the templates and mark the tape. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis points on each template.

Remove the templates and draw lines connecting the horizontal and vertical axis points. These lines will be used for hooping.

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with a little temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the first design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the tape. Peel the tape back to the edges of the hoop and embroider the design. We are embroidering applique designs on our scarf. To learn more about how to embroider applique designs click here. We are using the print cotton fabric for our applique pieces on the top of the front panel.

After the design has finished, carefully trim away the excess stabilizer on the back of the embroidery. Re-hoop the fabric for the next design and embroider it as you did before. Repeat these steps for each of the designs.

Now we will prepare the fabric for the back of the front panel. Lay the assembled front panel on the fabric, trace and cut out the shape. Align the back fabric and the front panel together, right sides together, and pin in place. Sew a 1/2 inch seam along the side and bottom edges. Be sure to leave the top edge open for turning.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams. Sew a 1/4 inch seam along the side and bottom edges but leave the top edge open.

Next we'll add the applique leaves along the bottom edge of the scarf. Create paper templates of the designs as you did earlier. We are adding an applique leaf design to each bottom corner and in between each design on the top section (we used 7 leaves). Position the templates across the bottom edge with half of the leaf extending past the edge of the fabric and tape in place. Keep the stems of the leaves on the fabric.

Spray a piece of tear-away stabilizer with a touch of spray adhesive, position it under the fabric and template and smooth the fabric on top. Place strips of masking tape under the horizontal and vertical axis lines as you did earlier and mark the center and axis points.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the axis points. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the tape.

When cutting the applique pieces for this step, create two dielines for each leaf. Cut one leaf with the template positioned on the front of the fabric piece and cut another with the template positioned on the back. This will create a front and back appliqué piece for the design.

Since both sides of the embroidery will be visible, we are winding a bobbin with the same thread we are using in the top. Attach the hoop to the machine, load the design, and embroider the dieline. Raise your presser foot as high as it can go so that it does not get caught on the edge of the fabric. After the dieline has sewn, stop the machine and remove the hoop (do not unhoop the fabric and stabilizer). Spray the backside of the front applique piece with a bit of adhesive and place it inside the dieline shape on the front of the embroidery.

Also, spray the back side of the back applique piece with adhesive and place it inside the dieline shape on the back of the embroidery.

Attach the hoop back on the machine and continue embroidering the design.

After the design has sewn, unhoop the fabric and stabilizer and tear away the excess stabilizer. Repeat the hooping and embroidering process for each design.

Now we will prepare the fabric for the top panel of the scarf. Measure how deep you want the top to be and add one inch (ours measured 12 inches so our final measurement is 13 inches). Cut two pieces of fabric to the length you measured earlier by the measurement you just took (ours is 47 1/2 inches long by 13 inches deep). Align the pieces right sides together and pin in place. Sew a 1/2 inch seam along each short end but leave the top and bottom edges open.

Insert the assembled front panel inside the top panel with the right sides together and the top edges aligned. Pin the top edges in place. Sew a 1/2 inch seam along the top edges.

Flip the top panel up, lie it flat, and press the seams. Turn the top edge of the top panel in 1/2 inch and press in place. Then, sew a 1/4 inch seam along the top edge of the top panel. Also, top stitch a 1/4 inch seam along the top panel at the seam where it meets the front panel.
