1| Page President’s Page Julia Mann, President Welcome to the 10 th Year of the San Antonio Rose Chapter of National Charity League. Your Board, GLAs and Committee Chairs have all been hard at work over the summer to plan a truly fabulous tenth anniversary year. As I said at our opening meeting, we want this year to be a celebration of our accomplishments and an example of how our membership is devoted to the mission of NCL which is “to foster the mother-daughter relationship in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences”. The theme for this year is the “Power of Ten”. The theme was selected by the Board, not only as symbol of the anniversary but in recognition of the broad impact we have on our community as well. One act of kindness, one example of leadership, one unique cultural experience can multiply ten- fold when preformed with a purpose. One of the beauties of NCL is we each have a role to play. That role changes from year to year so that throughout the six year NCL experience we meet each of the three pillars: Community Service, Leadership Development and Cultural Experience. We are so fortunate that ten years ago our founders brought this organization to our community. We have accomplished much in that time period and established deep roots that will allow the San Antonio Rose Chapter to continue to grow for our daughters and granddaughters. As you know we have planned several events to celebrate the 10 th Anniversary. Cynthia Kerby and her committee members Marian Holdworth and Kasey Oden have worked tirelessly to put together not only a fun event but one that fulfills our mission. The festivities begin with a Sustainer and Patroness reception at the home of Amber Conseco. This will be a wonderful opportunity to connect with those who have come before us and those who will lead us into the next decade. Saturday is our day of giving and the response has been phenomenal! As many of you work to earn the Blue Sapphire Award we currently anticipate providing more than 350 hours of community service. October 15, 2016 is expected to be the single largest day of giving in our history. Marcia Archer is rallying all of our Past Presidents to participate in the Day of Giving by leading the efforts at each of the participating philanthropies. The celebration rally at the DoSeum that evening will include our founders, the national President of NCL, Inc. Donna Welsh, and a few surprises. A special thank you Allison Zeller who is putting together a video tribute. I hope that each of you will find some way to participate in the planned events and take joy in celebrating this anniversary with your daughters. We have the power through NCL to impact the lives of others tenfold. I challenge each of you to meet your own Power of Ten goal in your own way: volunteer ten extra hours; mentor ten Ticktockers; meet ten new people. President’s Page Julia Mann, President Welcome to the 10th Year of the San Antonio Rose Chapter of National Charity League.

As you know we have planned several events to celebrate the 10th

Anniversary.

We are powerful group leaving a lasting legacy on our community.

The Rose Report Fall 2016

Membership Matters Manda Kelley, VP Membership As a first year active member in the Rose Chapter, I have learned more than I ever thought possible about the “behind the scenes” work that goes into running the chapter in the few short months I’ve held this position. I spent much of the summer updating membership files, familiarizing myself with the new website, and preparing the documents our chapter will use during the upcoming membership drive.

The most important responsibility I have as Membership VP is to oversee the membership drive process and help usher in a new class of members who believe in our mission and understand the responsibilities that come along with the privilege of NCL membership. I view this role as one that directly helps to sustain and insure the vitality of our chapter for the future. My job is also to oversee and coordinate the sustainer network, something we are really trying to focus on invigorating this year now that our chapter is 10 years old. We are looking at ways to connect with former members, both Patronesses and Ticktockers, so that the NCL experience can continue to bring value to their lives long after their active years. Lastly, I oversee the Standards Committee and the Hours & Awards chairs, whose job it is to review each member’s hours and insure everyone meets their membership obligations. It is important to me to be a source of education and support for each and every member who may have membership questions or who has issues fulfilling her requirements. I am here to help!

I previously served as GLA for the class of 2021 during my provisional year, which I loved because it afforded me the opportunity to get to know the girls in that Ticktocker class. I am a retired attorney and stay at home mom who is devoted to the care and happiness of our family. My daughter, Lila, and I love the opportunities NCL has provided us to grow personally and to share quality time together serving our community. We truly feel it is an honor to be a part of such a wonderful group of women and young ladies!

Please remember the New Deadlines for Sponsorship and New Member Events!!

• Legacy Forms due October 15th by 5pm • Intent to Sponsor Forms Due November 1st by 5pm • Prospective New Member Open House is November 3rd at 6pm. • Sponsor and Prospective New Member Packets due December 3rd by 5pm

Ticktocker Times Meaghan Williams, VP Ticktockers Last year was my first in NCL and I got the coveted role of GLA. I can say that now, a year later, but I’ll be honest that I wasn’t too sure before starting. The summer before beginning, my head was spinning with doubts. “How could I be a GLA when I know nothing about NCL?” “I’m new to San Antonio so how could I ever have ideas about who can talk to our class?” “How will I remember all these new moms and daughters?” “What if our ideas fall flat, and the girls’ 7th grade experience isn’t the BEST? You can assure your daughters that, yes, even adults doubt themselves!

Looking back at the year, I am proud to say that I made new friends. I went out of my comfort zone many times (even enjoyed it most times), had some ideas and plans that fell flat and some that were really well received. I remembered names most of the time (and those times I didn’t, the moms and girls graciously pretended to not notice). I loved having a close-up view of what happens in an NCL class. I loved seeing the Ticktockers take themselves out of their comfort zone, and become more comfortable in their roles and with each other as the year went on. I loved seeing them grow from knowing little about each other into girls with shared experiences who can rely on each other as they serve.

The summer we planned our meetings was daunting. We had a tight deadline, but with boosting each other’s confidence and working as a team, we did it! We made our deadline to plan an incredible year for our class of 2021! As a mom, I really liked volunteering with my daughter, Claire. We’d always talked about doing this as a family but our schedules kept us too busy. NCL got us out there. Together, we journeyed out of our comfort zones and did things we hadn’t before, and we saw things that made us sad and made us grateful. We felt happy after leaving our shifts. Those days we were exhausted, but more often, we felt happy that we’d made a difference in someone’s life, and we were privileged to share time with those people.

This year, I’m challenging myself again. As the VP Ticktockers, I’m serving on the Board without knowing most of the other Board members. My inner voice may have had some of those same questions as last year, but it was bolstered by confidence gained from a year of NCL experience and by the support of the people I’ve met.

I am excited about this role because I truly believe the Ticktockers are the lifeblood of an NCL chapter. And, having been a GLA, I learned a lot in my first year. I’m passionate about the girls’ experience and about the mission of NCL – the opportunities for leadership, service and cultural experiences.

4|P a g e

I am most excited about being able to work with people to increase the comfort level of Ticktockers in their roles. In my role, I believe I can have an impact directly on training and communications. I am impressed by the creativity, thoughtfulness and commitment of the GLAs who each created their class’ schedule. I was fortunate to have a really committed, hard-working group of Patronesses who pulled off a fantastic Ticktocker Training session and who weren’t afraid to try new things.

Being in NCL gives mothers and daughters six years to try different things, to take themselves out of their comfort zones, meet new people and make a difference at home and in our community. Some years, our lives are busier than others. I like that NCL lets you express your preference for a job that can suit your strengths and interests while being aligned with what else you have going on. My goal is to help raise awareness of the jobs that we have available, to provide resources so members can identify some that might best suit them and to help provide information, training and support so that we can all succeed in our roles.

Treasurer Tips Julie Hill, Treasurer

(1) For expenses, fill our reimbursement form – make it easy and scan a copy of it and send via email.

(2) Include a copy of all receipts. A scanned receipt works! (3) We cannot reimburse sales tax, so be sure to take a copy of Sales Tax Exempt Certificate. (4) Copy your VP on reimbursement requests via email so we don’t have to track down their

signature. (5) Please provide an address where to mail check, so you don’t have to wait for the next

Patroness meeting. (6) When in doubt, ask your VP or Treasurer if the expense is reimbursable. (7) Before you spend, ask your VP or GLA what the budget is, so you know how much you can

spend. (8) Pay your dues on time. (9) Avoid late fees – pay your dues on time (10) Questions? Just ask me!

Provisional Pieces Sally Guy, VP Provisionals It is my pleasure to serve this year as the VP Provisionals and to continue for a second year working with such wonderful, dedicated women who make up our Executive Board. Our chapter is in great hands! My role this year is to support our Provisional members, helping them understand and achieve an engaged and satisfying membership in NCL. Thanks to all of you who sponsored our wonderful new Patronesses of the Class of 2022, and remember to keep in touch with them throughout the year. The more Active Patronesses we have supporting them, the more likely they will have a successful start to their NCL experience! In the spirit of this year’s theme, “The Power of Ten”, here is the list of Top Ten Things I Love About NCL: 10. Watching the seniors and 7th graders exchange flowers at the Holiday Tea 9. Making new friends 8. Developing my own skills of leadership and teambuilding 7. Working with amazing women 6. Seeing pictures of TTs working at philanthropies 5. Fostering a lifelong love of volunteering in my daughter 4. Supporting and encouraging new members 3. Watching my daughter learn leadership skills by holding various TT jobs 2. Providing much needed community support to our philanthropies, and; 1. Spending time with my daughter Maddie I hope you all have a wonderful 2016-17 NCL year!

Recording Secretary Amanda Rivera, Recording Secretary It is an honor to serve on the board this year. It’s wonderful to work alongside such incredibly smart and talented women. As Recording Secretary, the most important thing I do is keep accurate minutes of the Board and Patroness meetings. These minutes provide an official record for our chapter, and members can review the Patroness meeting minutes each month on the website. Reviewing these minutes is a great way to stay informed when you have missed a meeting, or to clarify questions if you missed taking detailed notes.

Simply follow these steps:

• Chapter Tab • Communications • Patroness Meeting Minutes

9|P a g e

• Select the appropriate link by date of meeting

In my few short months on the board the Top 10 things I’ve learned to do to make my job easier are:

• Attend every meeting • Eat before the meeting. It’s very difficult to eat and write at the same time. • Arrive early prepared with paper, pen and motion slips • Stay on task, as it is easy to miss something. We cover a great deal at these meetings. • While taking notes, abbreviate as much as possible • Focus on what information is important to include in the official record • Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification, as some board members speak very quickly • Don’t procrastinate and get those minutes on the website as soon as possible • Finally, do the best I can to keep the hard copies organized in the binder and files uploaded to

the website for your review.

The Board is available to assist all Patronesses and their Ticktockers. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with any questions regarding the content of the meeting minutes. I am always happy to help.

Parliamentary Update Nicole McNeel, Parliamentarian

Top 10 Parliamentary matters for our chapter. In honor of our 10th anniversary we chose “The Power of 10” as our theme for the year as a way to empower our daughters and ourselves as we tackle our new positions, our new website, and even volunteering at new philanthropies. Below are the top 10 things I would like to share about parliamentary matters.

1. I am thankful for committees and team effort. The Parliamentarian acts as an advisor to the President to manage the policies and procedures and bylaws for our Chapter, as well as overseeing the nominating process. Luckily, I have help from the two Assistant

10|P a g e

Parliamentarians: Jeanne Sellers who will be in charge of updating the documents and Karen Lee Zachary who will handle the Ticktocker Elections.

2. I am thankful I inherited the job from a thorough former Parliamentarian. I am fortunate that my predecessor, Jill Vassar, spearheaded the major revision of the Policies and Procedures required by NCL, Inc. and, although we will have some changes and additions to make this year, our Chapter documents are in order.

3. Although reading the P&P Manual and Bylaws is not quite as gripping as “The Girl on the Train”, they are user friendly. I spent some time this summer actually reading the Policies and Procedures Manual and the Bylaws. Although not quite pleasure reading, our P&P Manual and Bylaws are easy to navigate. The definitions in the beginning of Chapter documents are helpful and the indexes allow you to easily look up anything by topic.

4. Shortcuts can save the day. We now have a couple of new tools, which you can use to get quick answers to some of your basic questions. Under the Patroness Files tab you will see Helpful Tools that link to NCL Requirements grid which covers all the basic requirements to be in good standing for both Patronesses and Ticktockers. Check it out; it's awesome! Also, make a habit of checking the Requirements link on the left of the Home screen, which gives you an update on your status.

5. No need to panic. Remember these tools help Patronesses and Ticktockers succeed in meeting their requirements and for most basic requirements questions, you will not have to refer to the 200 page Policies and Procedures Manual. However, for more detailed information, you may have to refer to our Chapter P&P Manual.

6. Don’t be a like a deer caught in the headlights. Elections for Nominating Committee are coming up and later this fall, both Patronesses and Ticktockers will receive two electronic forms inquiring about your job preferences and recommendations for board positions. Start thinking about what you want to do and talk to your Ticktockers about their job interests. Our positions are another way for us all to grow and learn more about this organization and about ourselves.

7. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. The forms for Make-Up hours are on the website under the Patroness Files tab Make-Up Hours heading. Until we can reconcile the technology with the P&Ps, we are still going handle make-up hours the old fashioned way with paper forms. Lessen your stress and do the make-up hours and submit your forms as soon as you possible.

8. Check out the website. There is some pretty cool stuff on the site and some helpful reminders. For example, remember that all Philanthropy hours for both Patronesses and Ticktockers will be logged manually. However, Patronesses will continue to check in to Patroness and Chapter events using Cheetah track. Patronesses should not enter their hours or meeting credits. However, Ticktockers are responsible for entering their meeting credits and hours on the website after attending Ticktocker events. We will not use Cheetah Track at Ticktocker Meetings or class events such as Father/Daughter, Cultural and Philanthropy.

9. There are no stupid questions. If you are unsure about something after checking out the short cuts or the P&P Manual, please do not hesitate to contact me. Not every situation is covered in

11|P a g e

our P&P Manual, which is why the chapter will need to update this resource to add new policies from time to time.

10. All these rules and regulations are in place to help us function smoothly. I am looking forward to serving as your Parliamentarian this year. Happy 10th Anniversary the Rose Chapter!

Philanthropy Jennifer Zackary, VP Philanthropy

Top Ten Reasons Why I Love My Role

1.The camaraderie and friendship with other board members. 2. I love the Philanthropy Committee. They make my job easy. 3. Detailed Knowledge of each volunteer opportunity that NCL offers. 4. I love that NCL strengthens our community by empowering our daughters and giving our time 5. I have a better understanding of how NCL operates. 6. I love that I don’t have to deal directly with Digital Cheetah as much as other positions. I get to email people!!! 7. I feel I am setting a positive example for my daughter by demonstrating responsibility of serving on my position. 8. I love the flexibility of my position (communications done at home) 9. I love my role because I can see all the great work The ROSE Chapter does when I run “Volunteer Hours reports” 10. I think NCL is a great organization to be apart of. Philanthropy is one of the mail pillars in the NCL organization. I am happy to be a part of NCL, and I love my role. Working through the challenges of managing all the needs of philanthropies has been a great reward this year. The mission of “Mothers and Daughters serving the community together” is the reason we are here. My Philanthropy Committee is amazing to work with, and I am grateful to Stephanie Casey, former VP of Philanthropy, who is always there to answer questions.

12|P a g e

Communication Chronicle Beth Houser, VP Communications When you become a mother, you join mommy and me classes. The next steps are classes and/or activities you choose for her. As she grows up, she forms her own opinions, likes and interests. Again, things change. NCL provides the opportunity for your daughter to see you in a different light as well as for you to see the young woman your daughter is becoming. The times you spend with your daughter are times to be remembered and cherished.

As a first year active member, I accepted the position of VP of Communications. When approached, I decided there was no time like the present to be a member of the board. And am I ever glad I did! As with many things in life, I am finding that the things I am learning in my role on the board for the Rose Chapter should be applied to all aspects of my life.

The Top 10 things my role has taught me: 1. You can make a difference. 2. Patience - It truly is a virtue. It is necessary to exercise at many times during one's day. 3. Active Participation is necessary. It is not about just showing up. 4. Leading is done by example - especially in our daughter's lives 5. Forgiveness - Everyone makes mistakes. Put them in the past and move on. 6. It is ok to ask for help. 7. It is difficult to overcome one's fears but it can be done. 8. Never underestimate yourself. 9. You can do anything you set your mind to. 10. Rock your roles - all teams have strengths and weaknesses. It is how these two come together, which will determine the success of your team.

To be a part of a great group of mothers and daughters working together - committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. I am truly honored to be a part of the San Antonio Rose Chapter and a member of your 2016-2017 Board of Directors.
