The City of Gahanna is committed to protecting pollinators.

A pollinator is any insect or animal that visits plants and moves

pollen. Ultimately, this activity allows the plant to generate seeds

that continue the cycle of life for the plant species while yielding

fruits, vegetables and nuts consumed by humans and animals

alike. Bees, butterflies, beetles, bats, flies, hummingbirds and

moths —all pollinators—are currently threatened with a loss of

habitat and food sources.

Mayor Tom Kneeland recently recognized the City as a Pollinator

Community for its efforts to create pollinator-friendly habitats that

help ensure the survival of vital animal species, improve regional

food production and stimulate the local economy.

New wedge-bed planting behind Creekside Café began by removing invasive species and now provides habitat and food sources forpollinators while controlling erosion.

Parks staff is stewarding bee hives at Gahanna Woods to help the declining bee populations.

New designs at the Geroux Herb Garden consider micro-climates paired with native plants to reduce watering, provide for year-round food sources and color and ultimately require less maintenance.

An attractive Coleus leaf at Creekside Plaza provides camouflage for this adolescent Katydid.

Wildflower prairies at Gahanna Woods provide food sources for a variety of pollinators including moths, butterflies and hummingbirds.
