New Jersey YMCA Reciprocal MembershipYour reciprocal membership entitles you, as a Somerset Hills YMCA member, to work out at another Y 5 times per month!The reciprocal membership allows you access to a variety of member amenities at each location, including wellness center,swimming pools and certain fitness classes, basketball court etc. The reciprocal membership agreement does not include

facility member discounts on programs. You may register for programs at participating Ys at non-member rates.Members must maintain a current membership at their home Y to be eligible for this program.

registration informationMember registration begins on Tuesday, August 16th at 7:00pm. On Friday, Aug 19th at 10:00am, registration opens up to potential members of the Somerset Hills YMCA. If you have any registration questions, please contact Karen DiGiovanni (908) 630-3528.

IMPORTANT DATES & NOTES FOR ALL REGISTRANTS:

• All registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. • Individuals must use our online system to register. If you have previously registered through our online system, your User ID and Password are already set up. • Your current email must always be on record with the YMCA for your ease in registering and receiving your registration confirmation. • If you need to update your email, please do so prior to the start of registration by contacting Karen DiGiovanni at (908)630-3528 or e-mailing: [email protected]. • If you already have an account set up but have forgotten or misplaced your login and password, you may click “Retrieve Login” and type in your email address. Your login and password will be sent to you via email. • We encourage people to familiarize themselves with the online registration offerings and process prior to registration day. Please visit our website to review a detailed description of the courses, registration process, class availability, to check your account, or to make a payment (including E-Pay credit card/bank draft payments). Please view the “Registration FAQs” section under programs to find directions on how to register for programs using your online credit. • If you are a first-time registrant, you must first set up your account in order to get a User ID and password.

Class Refund/Credit Policy: • Requests for a credit of your class fee must be submitted in writing on a Credit Request Form (available at the Welcome Centers) prior to the start of the third week of the program session. • Please note that after Week 2 of the class session, credits will be issued for medical reasons only (requests must be accompanied by a Doctor’s note). • Credits will be pro-rated based on the number of classes attended. A $5.00 processing fee will be charged if you change or drop a class, unless the change is due at the request or need of the YMCA. • For details on this policy and how to access your online credit, please go to our website. • Credits or refunds are not given for closings due to weather or emergency situations.

important informationSevere Weather PolicyIn case of inclement weather, individualsare encouraged to call the YMCA at (908)766-7898 ext. 500 for information regarding program cancellations, delayed openings of the facility or closures. You may also receive updates by visiting our website at www.somersethillsymca.org. During our winter season we will make every effort to remain open. However, we do want to make sure that all our members and staff remain safe during any inclement weather situation and reserve the right to delay our opening or close the facility when deemed necessary. If we choose to delay the opening or close the facility, we will make that decision by 4:00 a.m. Monday-Friday,and by 5:00 a.m. on the weekends.

preschool & youth programs

YMCA Adventure GuidesThis program is for children and their fathers or their male rolemodels. The children must be in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.The purpose of this program is to strengthen the father-child bond. Each month, father-child pairs meet in small groups called “circles” for games, crafts, and refreshments. “Expedition events” are opento all participants of the program and may include campouts, museum overnights, dad/daughter dances, sporting events, and more! The Adventure Guides also sponsor a Food Drive in the fall and special evenings such as Santa’s visit to the Y on a fire truck, rollerblading parties and other fun events. All returning members must be registered by September 1st or they will not be able toparticipate in the fall campouts. New member registration will take place in early September. There will be an Adventure Guides Kick-off Party on Sunday, September 11 from 1:00-4:00pm in the Y Teen Center. All interested parties are urged to contact Mary McCabe as soon as possible if you are thinking about joining. Y Trail ProgramTrail Blazers – Fathers & Sons Grades 4-8thTrail Mates – Fathers & Daughters Grade 4-8thAn exciting and challenging program for fathers and their older children. In the fall of 2010, the Trail Blazers and Trail Mates spent a beautiful weekend camping, fishing, boating, and climbing at Camp Ockanickon in Medford Lakes, NJ. The Trail Mates also went skiing for the weekend at Snow Mountain in Pennsylvania in the winter while the Trail Blazers enjoyed a winter campout at Frost Valley. In the spring the Trail Mates will be going on an overnight horseback riding and tent camping trip at the Triple W Stables in Hawley, Pennsylvania.Contact Mary McCabe at [email protected] $25 per person or $50 dad/child

Millicent Fenwick Day Care Center Ages 18mos.- 5yrsOur state certified day care center is open from 7:30am-6:00pm, Mon-Fri. All programs are led by certified teachers and highly qualified assistants. Junior Olympians I Ages 3 ½ - 5yrs(Instructor Recommendation Only)This accelerated class is designed as an advanced co-ed gymnastics class. Children are taught skills on floor, bars, beam, vault and Tumble Trak. This class will emphasize strength, flexibility, body awareness and control, safety knowledge and listening skills

YOUTH PROGRESSIVE CLASSES

Junior Olympians II Ages 5-7yrs (Instructor Recommendation Only)For graduates of our Junior Olympians I, students will progress onto more difficult skills throughout the school year. This accelerated class is designed as an advanced co-ed gymnastics class. Children are taught skills on floor, bars, beam, vault and Tumble Trak in preparation for our Roller/Swinger/Kipper/Flyer program. This class will emphasize strength, flexibility, body awareness and control, safety knowledge and listening skills.

Acrobatic Artists Ages 5-7yrsLearn the art of acrobatic gymnastics with “Miss Beth” in theGymnastics Center. Children are taught numerous acrobatic skills with partners and without. By the end of the year, students will demonstrate a complete routine of tumbling to music.

All Boys Challenge Ages 5+yrs (Level I&II)For our Y’s Guys and Jumper graduates, focusing on learning new skills specific to male gymnastics is a primary goal. Bounce across the Tumble Trak, roll, flip and fly! Strength, conditioning and body awareness all while having fun!

Tumbling Ages 5+yrsTumbling classes include strength conditioning, Tumble Trak, and spring floor. If unsure about placement regarding your child, please schedule an evaluation or speak to a coach. Instructor will have final decision on proper placement levels for all students. Beginner – Tumbling for the novice gymnast and cheerleader. Intermediate – Master cartwheels, power hurdle round-offs, back bends, front and back walkovers, front handsprings and more. Advanced – Students learn multiples, variations, front and back tumbling, with a focus on proper form and safety.

Roller Ages 5+yrs (Level I)Children are strongly encouraged to complete beginner tumbling before advancing to this class. This one hour co-ed class includes basic gymnastics instruction on vault, uneven bars, balance beam, Tumble Trak and floor exercise, as well as safety skills. Participants will learn USAG compulsory Level I routines.

PRESCHOOL PROGRESSIVE CLASSES

Tumbling Twos Ages 2-3yrsThis class is for the child who is ready to tumble. Emphasis willbe on learning social skills, body awareness, flexibility, safety knowledge and listening skills all while having FUN!

Intro to Acro Ages 3-5yrsDuring this 45 minute class, children are introduced and taught numerous acrobatic skills with partners and without. By the end of the year, students will demonstrate a complete routineof tumbling to music.

Jumper Jr. Ages 3-4yrs(Must be 3 before the first class and be potty trained)This is the perfect class for first time participants to spread their wings. Each week class will begin with a group warm-upand stretch, then participants will rotate through 2-3 preschool events with progression towards new skills. Developing listening skills and safety awareness is a prime goal of this class. Guardian participation is acceptable until the teacher determines otherwise.

Jumper I Ages 3 ½-4yrsThe perfect next step for our students who have graduated from our Jumper Jr. program and are ready to continue building on the basics they have already mastered. Guardian participation is acceptable until the teacher determines otherwise.

Jumper II (Must be 4 by first class)This 45 minute class is for our 4 year old Jumper Jr. & Jumper I graduates. Participants must be able to follow circuits, perform basic gymnastics skills, and be ready to work on bridges, cartwheels and handstands.

Jumper III (Pre-requisite-Jumper II)This 45 minute class is the perfect environment for our 4 year old participants who have already mastered the basics in Jumper II. Students will be introduced to a more challenging gymnastics environment while still having lots of fun.

Y’s Guys - Boys Ages 3-5yrsChildren are taught skills on floor, bars, rings and vault specificto male gymnastics, as well as the Tumble Trak specific to male gymnastics. This class will emphasize body awareness and control as well as strength, flexibility, safety knowledge and listening skills.

Experience shows that due to the progressive nature of our gymnastics programs, children will accomplish greater progress by remaining with the program for more than one session, ideally for the school year. Our gymnastics program follows both USA Gymnastics and Y guidelines. During class times, ourprogram will also focus on the four core values of the Y, and all students will be encouraged to adhere to the principles of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty andCaring in a positive environment. Pick the day and time that works for you, and enroll your child for the school year. Advancement will be determined upon teacher recommendation. Our successful program offers children the chance to try gymnastics for the first time, while also providing a full year curriculum to expand their gymnastics skills. Gymnasts will be given the opportunity to participate in various community demonstrations as well as a holiday and year-end show. Somerset Hills YMCA Cheerleading Coaches are USAG Safety Certified, trained to spot stunts appropriately, and experienced in coachingcheerleading and gymnastics. The Cheerleading program follows aprogressive approach (similar to gymnastics) whereby participants do not progress to the next level stunt unless having demonstrated proficiency in skills that are appropriate for their age and ability.

Equipment Orientations Equipment orientations are for all adult Y members and are FREE. An equipment orientation gives members the opportunity to become more knowledgeable and comfortable with the fitness equipment in both the machine and free weight areas. A Floor Supervisor will show you the proper techniques on using certain strength training machines and cardiovascular equipment. Each orientation will take approximately one hour to complete. Chair Yoga*Chair Yoga is a form of yoga that is practiced sitting in a chair,or standing using a chair for support. Chair Yoga is one of the gentlest forms of yoga available. Complicated maneuvers and complex movements are not present in a chair yoga class. Within this type of yoga class, you can cover standing, seated, and prone postures. A strength/fitness program for cancer patients and survivors based on the curriculum developed by Stanford University. LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA is a twelve week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who have become de-condi-tioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. The program is offered with no cost to the participants. Our goalis to help patients build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes, and improving energy levels and self esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they cancontinue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life. Research shows that physical activity can decrease recurrence and increase survivorship forcancer patients. Certified YMCA fitness instructors give personal individualized instruction to the participants. Outdoor AdventureWednesday “BIKE RIDES” or “FITNESS HIKES” Bike Rides tend to run April to November & Fitness Hikes run Dec. to Mar. If the weather is wet or icy we will hike instead of bike.Grab your bike and join us for scenic bike rides past meadowsand farms, occasionally even “rail trails” or canal paths. We live in an amazing place for scenic cycling on the back roads of NJ & PA. Bike rides offered will range from road bike rides to mountain bike “off-road” rides. Distance, levels and terrain will vary. Some introductory rides will be offered along with intermediate andmore advanced rides. In the colder and wetter months of Dec to Mar. we will put on our hiking boots and hit the local trails for fitness hikes. Weekly updates will be sent out via email with ride details. Family and Open SwimChildren UNDER 7 yrs of age and UNDER 48 inches tall must be with an adult who is wearing appropriate swim attire and in the water within arms’ reach of the child at all times, including in the zero-entry play area of the Stoddard pool.

Children ages 7-11 must be supervised by an adult in the pool area at all times.

Only US Coast Guard approved floatation devices are allowed during Family and Open swim. Lifejackets are available for member use.

Participants 17 and under will be required to take a “Deep Water Ready” test to swim in the deep end.

Stoddard Water SlidesRiders must be at least 48 inches tall. For safety reasons, there will be no exceptions to this rule.

Masters Swim Program Make swimming more than just going back and forth. Masters offers coached workouts geared toward swimmers who have a desire to do interval training and are looking for a more social swimming experience. Swim Team Ages 7-18yrsA member of the Northern New Jersey YMCA Swim League, the Somerset Hills YMCA Swim Team competes year round in both YMCA and USA sanctioned swimming events. With 250 swim-mers between the ages of 7 and 18, each swimmer is placed in one of our progressive practice groups based upon age and coaches’ evaluation. The primary season runs from September through March providing each swimmer with the opportunity to compete on a dual meet team and participate in Championship meets. Lifeguard Training Course •Minimum age: 15 years by the last day of the class •All participants must pass a pretest which consists of swimming a total of 300 yards (12 lengths of the pool) continuously and retrieving a 10lbs object from a minimum of 7 feet of water and swimming with it on their back for 20 yards. •Fee for the Regular Course will be $320. •Refund Policy: Refunds will only be given up through the completion of the pre-test for the course which is designed as the entrance into the course itself. •Upon successful completion of the lifeguard course, participants will be certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional rescuer.For more information contact Duke Munzer (908)766-7898 ext. 518.

Mental Health First AidMental Health First Aid is offered in the form of an interactive 12 hour course that presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. Those who take the 12-hour course to certify as Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
