Southern Vance was the only area team to clinch a state playoff berth last season.

The Raiders lost their start-ing quarterback, running back and top receiver from the 2012 squad, but return four all-

conference play-ers in lineman Jaquez Bullock, receiver Shawn Henderson, defensive back Deon Smith, and Sheldon Smith, an all-conference all-purpose defen-sive selection.

Lewis Young is entering his second season as head coach as the Raiders make the drop to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A ranks and back to their old Northern Carolina Conference stomping ground.

“I think this conference is much tougher,” said Young. “The last conference was mainly try-ing to get by Cardinal Gibbons. You had Orange and Chapel Hill that were always pretty good. Now, you’ve got Bunn, Franklin-ton, Roanoke Rapids. South Granville. You’ve got some really good teams. And Warren County has always been a rivalry game. It’s going to make every game really tough.”

Young expects the Raider

defense to be strong and the offense to be balanced although he said an emphasis will be placed on the run game.

Bullock and senior classmate Ty-Traveon Roberts, the starting quarterback, will play vital roles on each side of the ball.

Bullock digs in at left tackle and guard offensively. The 6-foot-8, 320-pounder was also one of the team’s top tacklers on the defensive front last season.

“He’s a monster on the offen-sive line,” said Young. “To have a guy like that to come off of, he’s going to make a big difference.”

Southern lost one offensive lineman from last season. Bull-ock and center Anthony Mas-senburg anchor the new crop, blocking for Roberts, who took plenty of snaps last season as De’Vante Henderson struggled with injuries.

“The sky is the limit with him,” Young said of Roberts. “He’s such a great athlete. Ty-Traveon is one of the better athletes to ever come through Southern Vance. Offense and defense, special teams, he’s going to be exceptional.”

Lightning-quick backs have been the norm for Southern in recent years. The Raiders have reloaded with junior Qualik Shea-rin, a backup to Chris Henderson in 2012.

“He’s fast,” Young said of the shifty Shearin. “He has a lot of

cuts. He’s a real good scat back. He’s shown a lot of potential in practice.”

Shawn Henderson is fast too. The wideout steadily improved as the 2012 season wore on, fin-ishing with five touchdowns and close to 500 receiving yards.

“I’m expecting a great year out of Shawn,” said Young. “He’s doing things in practice that has all the coaches’ mouths drop-ping. We’ll just be amazed at the plays he’s making.”

Young also likes what he sees in athletic senior DeAndre Jef-ferson, a 6-foot-2 wideout who missed much of last season with an injury. He and Shawn Hender-son are joined in the receiving corps by classmate Jeremiah Williams.

Bullock and junior Maurice Howard form the middle of the defensive line with Isaiah Leveille and Juwan Harris on either end.

Young said junior linebacker Sheldon Smith was the team’s defensive MVP last season. He’ll play on one side of senior Stan-ton Fields.

The other linebacker spot as well as a couple of secondary spots are up for grabs. Roberts lines up at free safety while Deon Smith also returns in the back-field.

The numbers aren’t flattering.Northern Vance has managed

only seven wins in four seasons, including a combined 2-20 record the previous two seasons.

Northern hasn’t clinched a state playoff berth since 2008. But Eric Watkins has never

been one to aim low. And he isn’t starting now despite the 1-10 mark in 2012 in his debut season as Northern head coach.

“All coaches go in to win,” said Watkins. “As long

as I can see improvement game by game and see we’re on the right track — don’t get me wrong — my goal is playoffs. Make a run in this conference and be in the top four.”

Northern’s last 3-A Carolina Conference win came in 2010. And the newly formed 3-A Big Eight Conference, featuring every Carolina Conference school except Southern Vance, is getting tougher with the additions of Southern Durham, Cedar Ridge and Northwood.

The Vikings are led by linebacker and fullback Devin Anderson, one of only seven seniors on the team.

“Devin’s a workhorse,” said Watkins. “All summer he worked out hard.”

One of Northern’s biggest strengths could be on returns with Tyrrick Bullock and Tamaj Bullock, of no relation. Junior Trey Small will also return some kicks.

“We’ve got some speedsters,” said Watkins.

Freshman Brooks Falkner takes over the kicking duties for the Vikings. He’s the brother of Joseph Falkner, a 2009 Northern graduate and former standout kicker for the Vikes.

Anderson and classmate Anthony Davis have a stable of talented juniors joining them in the offensive backfield with the likes of Tyrrick Bullock, Tamaj Bullock, Jonas Simmons, Michael Spinner, and LaDarius Hargrove. Most of the junior backs also line up in the defensive backfield.

“I tell them this is their breakout year,” said Watkins. “They showed me in the offseason what they were about. These kids have been here all offseason working during the summer. I’m looking forward to them doing good work for us this year.”

Justin Care is the center and is joined on the offensive front by Dontavius Richards, Mykel Williams and Montre Evans.

“They’re a pretty big group,” Watkins said of the line. “Just trying to get the timing down.”

Kris Haywood has the quarterback position to himself. The southpaw played most of

last season at signal caller when Tyquan Bryant suffered an early-season injury and never fully recovered.

“It was a lot of pressure on that freshman,” said Watkins. “I think he did a great job executing the offense. We’re just working on his accuracy passing the ball. But everything else, he’s looking pretty good.”

Spinner and Hargrove are the top returning receivers as slot backs.

Anderson, a middle linebacker, leads a young defensive group that Watkins wants to see “attack” more.

Davis starts at a tackle and also plays outside linebacker, Simmons is a returning all-conference selection and

senior Tommie Reed plays on one end of the line.

Toby Bradsher, a 320-pound senior newcomer, impressed during offseason workouts and is expected to contribute at nose guard.

Warren County’s offensive backfield is loaded with talent, but the Eagles are young up front with only one returning starter. And that means everything in John Ward’s single-wing system.

“In my offense, a team offense, the offensive linemen are just as prevalent as the backs,” said Ward,

entering his second season in Warrenton. “In a team offense, it’s not just the skill guys that count.”

Those skill guys, led by seniors Jaquan Jones, Chris Privett, Devonte Hargrove, and quarterback Kaelen Evans, will each play both ways as Warren County shoots for its first winning season since 1999.

The Eagles finished 4-7 in 2012, narrowly missing out on a 2-A state playoff bid.

“That is definitely something we talk about,” Ward said of returning to the playoffs. “The teacher in me just says, ‘Are we better today than we were yesterday?’”

Warren County is overall stronger, faster and more in tune with Ward’s offense. But that won’t guarantee wins in a Northern Carolina Conference that welcomes back the Eagles’ rival Southern Vance in addition to what is expected to be a strong South Granville team. Those two teams join traditional league powers Bunn and Roanoke Rapids and Franklinton finished second in the conference last season behind the Wildcats.

“I think this conference is better than it was last year,” said Ward. “This conference doesn’t have to apologize to anyone.”

The lone returning offensive lineman is tackle Corey Green, a 6-foot-5, 270-pounder who Ward says has gotten stronger along with much of the team.

Josh Moss, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound sophomore, returns after starting half of last season at guard. Senior Josh Fountain, junior Micah Morgan and sophomore Tymear Diggs are competing for spots and sophomores Dustin Harmon and Xzavien Carter are battling for the center job.

Hargrove leads the way at fullback after rushing for 829 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Privett ran for 746 yards and six scores.

Jones and Evans will each see time at quarterback and wingback. Pete Johnson also plays some wing back and junior Dyami Wortham impressed last season as a junior varsity call-up. Each of those players also lines up in the defensive backfield.

Ward anticipates an improved passing game. Seniors Xavier Alexander and Jaylen Jones line up as receivers as does freshman Darius Southerland.

Dennis Waddell, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound tight end, could be a lethal weapon for the Eagles — if they can just get him the ball.

“I don’t mean good, I mean he has terrific hands,” said Ward. “And he can block now. A tight end can be extremely

valuable in our system, especially one who can block.”

Waddell’s backup is Anthony Oliver, a 6-foot-3, 208-pound senior. Oliver started at Warren County as a freshman before playing two seasons at Plano High School in Texas, where he was expected to be a valued contributor this season for the storied Texas University Interscholastic League 5-A program.

Oliver, who will play tackle or end, is expected to be one of the leaders of the Eagles’ defense along with Privett, Johnson, George Burnette, and Otis Bullock.

Burnette led the team in tackles last season as a sophomore, tallying 90 to go with three sacks. Privett tallied 80 tackles from his linebacker position, where he is joined by Bullock.

“They’re athletic,” Ward said of his defense. “And by that, I don’t mean they are necessarily

speedsters. They all move quickly left to right and have gotten stronger pound for pound. Our defense is not very big, but they are very athletic and quick.”

Warren County didn’t use a placekicker last season and the Eagles were still sorting out that aspect of special teams in the preseason.

Jones, Wortham and Johnson are among those expected to return kicks. Ward said he’s been more concerned with kick coverage.

J.F. Webb is trying to get everything it can out of its tank of a tailback, Tobiah Lewis.

He’s the leader. Whether he likes it or not.

“We’re going to make him lead this team,” said first-year head coach Tony Midgette. “We feel like he’s going to be one of the best players on our team and I think he can be one of the best backs in this conference. We’re trying to make him understand that, make him believe that.”

Lewis, a 5-foot-10, 235-pound senior, finished with 874 rushing yards

in 2012, adding three scores. He leads a backfield that also features speedy junior Desean

Moss and Tevin Evans, a 5-foot-10, 215-pound sophomore.

“He’s a tough player physically,” Midgette said of Lewis. “Physically, he’s just going to overpower a lot of people. We’re just trying to get the most out of him.”

Midgette, a former Elizabeth City State linebacker, succeeded Brian Currin as head coach. Midgette was Currin’s defensive coordinator the previous four seasons.

Midgette said the offensive line in front of his trio of backs is the biggest he’s seen at Webb, led by one of the smaller ones, Zach Watkins, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound center and 2012 all-conference selection.

The other returning offensive lineman is senior Cameron Blanchard.

Senior Beau Smith is a returning offensive starter. But he’s never played quarterback. That’s what he’ll be asked to do this season as he replaces Corey Evans, a 2012 all-conference selection that transferred to Granville Central.

Smith, also a member of the Warrior baseball and basketball teams, moved to signal caller from receiver.

“I hate that we’re throwing him into the fire, but he’s the guy that we think is going to be the best fit,” said Midgette. “He’s catching on very quick to our system. We’re not asking him to throw it 60 yards down the field. We’re just asking him to make strong decisions with the ball.”

At 6-feet-2 and 235 pounds, sophomore tight end Deshawn Lewis could be Smith’s top target.

“The softest hands in Oxford,” said Midgette. “I think he catches just about anything. And he blocks well.”

Junior Deshay Hollifield did not play last season, but is expected to be another dependable option for Smith.

Midgette knows he can rely on Gearl Majors, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound defensive tackle.

“He’s excited some college coaches already,” Midgette said of the junior.

Midgette added that his offensive line has a hard time doubling Majors in practice.

“And I think we have a pretty good offensive line,” said the Webb coach.

Sophomore Luther Satterfield is also showing some promise up front while returning starter senior Zach Bailey moves to middle linebacker from defensive end. He leads a

young group of linebackers. The secondary figures

to be strong with seniors Nykwanza Henderson and Antonio Bowden back.

“Physically, he’s the prototype safety,” Midgette said of Bowden. “He’s about 6-1, 6-2, 215 pounds. Nykwanza is a very fast, speedy guy. He’s about 5-11, 180 pounds. Hopefully we’re not going to get a lot of touchdowns thrown on us because of those two guys.”

Midgette likes what he sees from returning kicker William Gillespie.

And Henderson and junior Deonte Hart will get time fielding kicks.

Webb looks to return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2010. The Warriors have six combined wins in the previous two seasons.

“We know we’re in good shape,” said Midgette. “We’ve got some good kids, some amazing talent. Our thing is we just want to improve every day.”

Kerr-Vance, Crossroads Christian and Southern Vance each are under the direction of new coaches.

Hilda Delbridge is back at Kerr-Vance after spending three seasons at Crossroads Christian.

Delbridge had a brief stint as the head coach of KVA’s junior varsity girls in 2009. Prior to that, she ushered in the tennis programs at Vance High and Southern Vance.

She coached most of her new Spartans as junior varsity players.

“I had a real good time with those girls,” said Delbridge. “Great players and of course, they were in a tough conference to be JV also.”

Price Wester, Maggie Thompson and Cassidy Tucker are the seniors and Claire Freeman and Betsy Murphy are also returning.

KVA returns two of its top four seeds, but lost the top one.

Delbridge said the competition for seeds has been tight.

“The matches are going much longer than I thought,” she said. “They’re very evenly matched.”

Delbridge said she has some promising young players and hopes to finish in the top three of an always competitive Eastern Plains Independent Conference.

KVA hosts Crossroads Aug. 16.

The Colts’ new coach is Johnston County’s Milton Price, a former junior varsity boys coach at Ravenscroft and varsity girls assistant at Raleigh

Charter.“I’m getting used to

them, they’re getting used to me,” said Price. “It’s a growing process. But they’ve been all positive and done everything I’ve asked. I couldn’t ask for a better group of young ladies.

Crossroads doesn’t have any seniors. Lora Yount and Holly Waddell are both juniors.

Christine Francis rounds out the list of new coaches. The Pennsylvania native served as an assistant soccer and swimming coach last year at Southern.

“They know me by now so they sort of know that I’m not so obsessed with winning,” said Francis. “I’m really concerned about having fun and making them love tennis like I love tennis.”

Kyanna Champ and Tamara Glover each return.

“I’m hoping that this season we’ll be able to build a tennis team that’s a long-lasting one because we did lose a lot of seniors,” said Francis.

Rachel Riddle is Northern Vance’s lone senior.

“She’s our only senior and best player,” said head coach Jeff Arthurs. “She’s super crucial.”

Riddle and Caroline Oakley are the only players returning from last season’s top six and they’ll likely be the top-two seeds this season.

Cardinal Gibbons is the defending 3-A Carolina Conference and state champion. The Crusaders will be strong again and Arthurs said Cedar Ridge, a new addition to

the league, has a solid program.

“We want to be competitive, try to finish third,” said Arthurs.

J.F. Webb coach Will Darden can’t seem to figure it out, but the Vikings have had his Warriors’ number in recent years.

“Northern Vance beats us every time now,” said Darden. “I don’t know how or why. But they do. So I gotta say, right now, Northern Vance is probably the third best team in the conference. I would think that Cardinal Gibbons would be one.

Chapel Hill would be two.”Darden expects a Webb

team of about 10 with three or four back from last season including seniors Lina Lue and Melissa Phelps.

Lue was the top seed last season.

“They’re good players,” said Darden. “They’re consistent. They get the ball over the net.”

Darden has also been impressed with some of his newcomers including freshman Anna Freuler.

Kayla Holder is No. 1 in her class. Her Kerr-Vance cross country coach wants her to

be No. 1 in the state.Holder was 11th in the N.C. Independent School

Athletic Association 2-A state meet last season as a freshman. Her time of 21:17.03 would have been good enough for second place in the 1-A ranks, where she’ll compete this season.

“Kayla probably puts in at least 40 miles a week,” said KVA head coach Courtney Nutter. “And she’s been training every day all summer. If she’s not running, she’s doing Zumba or Pilates or she’s lifting weights. Running is her thing and this is what she wants to do. And she’s going to do it.”

Holder finished 18th in the state as an eighth-grader. She and junior Addison Mabry have earned all-conference honors each of the previous two seasons.

Nutter’s primary goal for the team is to recruit more runners. A total of five is needed for a team score.

Jacob Goswick and A.J. Holloway are returning for the boys and Audrey Thompson is a seventh-grade newcomer.

KVA hosts the Eastern Plains Independent Conference Championship Oct. 18, a week before the state meet. The Spartans open Aug. 28 against Oakwood, Franklin Academy and Southern Vance.

The Raiders don’t have any seniors and junior Jonathan Carlock and sophomore Damonte Blash are the only returners.

Southern leaves the tough 3-A Carolina Conference for the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference, which should provide more stiff competition. Durham School of the Arts and N.C. School of Science and Math join Roanoke Rapids as the likely teams to beat.

Northern Vance head coach Razvan Tegean has given his team two options.

Live in the past and complain about what was lost. Or use last season’s suc-cess as an example and seek to rebuild the team and make it stronger.

The Vikings lost five starters, each a first team all-conference selection, from a squad that clinched Northern’s first state playoff berth since 2007.

Reed Kimbrell and Clayton Harris make up the senior class and Chris Pen-dergrass and Jake Wiggins are returning all-conference honorable mention picks.

Strong leadership characterized last season’s team. Now where will it come from?

“We are still looking for it,” said Tege-an. “It’s a big change. This year, we’re looking for players to step up and take that leadership role.”

Junior Thomas Knight inherits the goalkeeper’s jersey from Barrett Johnson.

“He was looking forward to replace Barrett in goal,” said Tegean. “He’s excit-ed being in there. I’m happy also because it’s always good when you don’t have to worry about the goalie, putting four or five people in there and changing them around.”

Pendergrass leads the back line. He’s played on the outside, but could move into a central role, where he may pair with freshman Brooks Falkner.

Freshman Connor Pendergrass, broth-er of Chris, plays fullback, as does Eric Lemmond, who also plays in the midfield.

Wiggins, Harris and Kimbrell join Lemmond in the midfield along with Jonathan Byrom.

Tegean expects junior Joseph Sharpe to toil at the top of the attack alongside Robert Depo and versatile freshman Irving Cheluca has shown promise.

Northern’s 3-A Big Eight Conference rival J.F. Webb returns eight starters from a team that squeaked into the state play-offs last season before elimination in the first round.

Second-year head coach Sean Barnes has high expectations fueled by a veteran midfield.

The Warriors were inconsistent offensively last season, which Barnes attributes to the team adjusting to a new offensive philosophy. He wants the team to be more explosive this season, taking its cues from Jamie Gomez.

Gomez was primarily the set-up man

last season, but is moving to the front and center of Webb’s 4-2-3-1 formation, replac-ing striker Luis Donaldo.

“I expect him to catch a lot of people off guard,” said Barnes. “He was mostly the assist man for Luis last year. I expect him to really lead us this year, especially in the goal-scoring category.”

William Gillespie, a center attacking midfielder, returns to the fold after suffer-ing a nasty leg injury last season.

Gomez and Gillespie were each first team all-conference selections last season along with junior defensive midfielder Tim Smith, who plays next to senior Gil-berto Turjan.

Zach Espino returns to the left flank and Barnes expects seniors Noah Year-gin and Brandon Frazier back at central defense while Tyler Blanchard is making a case to start in goal as a freshman.

Down a classification in 2-A, Warren County’s new head coach Travis Packer is taking it one step at a time.

The Eagles had only one win last sea-son. But that marked relative success. It was their first in five years, according to Packer.

“I think in general, goals for us are more processed-based,” said Packer. “I want better soccer players on our team, better gameplay. I don’t want to get too hung up on results right now because we’re building a program.”

They’ll start by building around Dontravious Harrison, a returning all-

conference goalkeeper who was new to the sport last year.

“He’s a long, lean, athletic guy,” said Packer. “Great reflexes. Really kept us in games last year.”

The Northern Carolina Conference welcomes a pair of strong programs in Durham School of the Arts and N.C. School of Science and Math. Last year’s conference champion, Corinth Holders, has moved up to 3-A.

Kerr-Vance is moving down to 1-A in the private school ranks. The Spartans have a new head coach and a number of new players.

Devon Honeywell is charged with the task of rebuilding a varsity program that lost a whopping 12 seniors and returns one starter, Juan Lopez.

Honeywell succeeds Tommy Farmer, the 2012 Eastern Plains Independent Conference Coach of the Year. Honeywell, who played professionally in his native Jamaica, has been a varsity assistant for three seasons in addition to coaching a successful junior varsity Spartan team.

How well Honeywell’s former JV play-ers adjust to playing on the next level should determine the Spartans’ fate.

Jordan Hogge led the JV team in scor-ing last season. He and Emil Bruce, also up from JV, are playing forward for varsity this season.

Lopez, John Carr, Cole Smith, James Averette, and Colin Pegram each played varsity last season.

Lopez, a junior, is a central midfielder and expected to take a major step up from his complimentary role in 2012.

“Playing with some of the best last year, being one of the leaders of the team,” said Honeywell, “I expect him to be very vital communication-wise, in terms of the workload. I’m really looking forward to him being a leader on and off the field.”

Pegram, who earned significant min-utes last season, plays with Lopez in the center.

Honeywell has four or five others vying for time in the middle.

Carr and Adam Medlin play outside of center backs Averette and Sam Fuquay, who play in front of goalkeeper Jordan Smith, another JV veteran.

“He’s been learning the trade,” Honey-well said of Smith. “He really likes it. He’s coachable. He adjusts quickly. I think he has come a long way.”

Northern and Southern Vance each have new volleyball coaches for the second consecutive season.

Christa Mosly succeeds Meredith Thompson at Northern while former Viking coach April Abbott replaces Shannon Allen and returns to her alma mater.

Abbott won a state championship with the Raiders in 2003 before playing at UNC-Pembroke.

“It’s nice to be here,” said Abbott. “It’s just odd to go from one side to the other and not feel some type of uneasiness. I didn’t know how the girls would accept it, but I haven’t had one problem.”

Abbott was the head coach at Northern from 2010-2011 and coached some of her new Raider players in middle school and Junior Olympics.

“I have an idea of what they’re about,” said Abbott. “They know what I’m about. I think that has helped with the preseason stuff a lot.”

Abbott said the 3-A Carolina Conference, which was mostly controlled by Cardinal Gibbons, Chapel Hill and Orange, should prepare the team for the move to the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference. South Granville, the 2012 2-A state runner-up, is the reigning champion.

The Raiders aren’t short on talent. They’re led by athletic outside hitter Kiyanna Kearney, who had 145 kills last season.

“Her work ethic is amazing,” said Abbott. “She’s going to keep going. She’s going to do what you ask her to do and not give you any lip about it.”

Megan Hight, Deja Hicks, Allyson Dunn, Rashyda Burwell, and Mikayla Sellers join Kearney in the senior class.

Sophomore Brittany West won’t leave the floor from her outside hitter position often.

Hight, a four-year veteran, gives the team a dominant presence in the middle. She may be joined there by Sellers.

Dunn and Hicks will play some back row and Bryanna Simmons is a setter.

The Southern-Northern conference rivalry is no more this season due to realignment. But the series continues with the Raiders hosting the Vikings Aug. 22 and the return trip scheduled for Aug. 30.

Mosly, a Virginia Beach, Va. native, played volleyball at St. Paul’s College and has been teaching at Northern for three years.

“I think they play well,” Mosly said of the Vikings. “I think they just need to improve a little bit in certain areas and I know that I can get them there.”

Emily Hilliard was Northern’s lone first team all-conference selection last season after racking up 152 kills and 86 digs.

“She understands the game, which is what I like about Emily,” said Mosly. “Anywhere that I put here, it doesn’t matter. I tell her to set, she can set. I want her to swing, she can swing. Anywhere I place here, she’s going to do great.”

Hilliard, McKenzie Gay, Elizabeth Gay, and Jesse Edwards are the seniors.

Edwards leads Northern at the net.

“Jesse is really, really important,” said Mosly. “I need that height at the net. Even the girls that aren’t tall, they can jump. But having that big body there is always good.”

Northern lost Southern as a league rival, but J.F. Webb hasn’t moved anywhere.

The Warriors lost seven players, but return three

starters including junior Hayley Marshburn, who led the area with 199 kills last season.

“She’s better,” said Webb coach Ellis Crews. “We’ve been putting the work in. She’s even better.”

Addison Ayscue, Emily Parham, Abby Kate Lumpkins, Gabrielle Capps, and Caroline Joyner make up the senior class. Capps and Joyner started last season.

Freshman Harper Pruitt is stealing the show at setter and hitter.

“She was all-world down there,” Crews said of Pruitt in middle school. “She has probably five of the best skills in volleyball. She can set. She can jump-serve. She can hit. She can pass. She can dig.”

Crews said this group can be successful, in part, because of young players like Pruitt and Ashley Owen that can go back and forth between varsity and junior varsity.

“We have to get a little bit smarter,” said Crews. “No question about that. But if we can get that, skill-wise, we can be pretty good.”

Warren County lost all but three of its players from last season.

Kelsie Clary, Kassie Clary and Taylor Abel, are each returning senior setters.

“We’re kind of small this year,” said Warren County coach Shannon Jones. “But we have a lot of heart. We play hard. We’re not going to be as talented as before. But we’ll see what happens.”

Kerr-Vance also has

three seniors led by Bryles Cutts.

Cutts and classmate Rebecca Ross are team captains and Jessica Moss rounds out the senior class. Each plays at outside hitter.

Kassidy Dickerson is back as a setter, Sophia Naradzay is a sophomore middle and junior Hannah Faulkner moved from the middle to outside hitter.

“I see strong things for Kassidy Dickerson too,” said KVA head coach Randi McMillen. “Even though she’s a freshman, she’s been playing for me for varsity since she was in seventh grade. I’m wanting her to be a setter and a hitter this year.”

McMillen added that she expects another tough Eastern Plains Independent Conference led by St. David’s and Cary Christian.

Trudy Stell is in her first season at Victory Christian, which claimed a regular season and conference tournament championship in 2012.

The Eagles have 10 players back, but no seniors.

Sophomore setter Allison Stell is the offensive and defensive leader.

“She’s very strong,” said Trudy Stell. “She’s an athletic individual. They get the ball past her, they’ll be doing good.”

Sophomore Tayler Thompson is back at setter and is one of the team’s top servers.

Hayward has been a teacher at Southern for 13 years.

“I ’m just a regular person that goes and gol fs in the summer three t imes a week,” she said. “Once a week when school starts.”

Southern starts prac-tice Aug. 20. Hayward thinks she’ l l have at

least four girls on the team.

“To create a viable ladies golf team because we’ve never had one,” Hayward said of team goals. “I’m hoping to

have one that is viable and the girls will want to continue to do it until they graduate. My ulti-mate goal is to get a team that can be competitive.”
