Protect your child’s vision from harmful UV raysWith summer on the way, it’s likely that you’re looking forward to spending lots of time outdoors with your children. It’s great to enjoy the sunshine, but did you know that 80% of eye damage due to I\TSWYVIXSLEVQJYP9:VE]WSGGYVWFIJSVIXLIage of 18? Worryingly, two thirds of parents don’t protect their kid’s eyes in the sun. This means that these children – and babies - are risking eye damage every time they go outside.

Independent optician, Ochil Eyes, specialises in children’s eye care and has a huge range of prescription and non-prescription sunglasses for kids. Parent and owner Mary Docherty advises other parents to ensure their children wear sunglasses, even on cloudy summer days. She said, “Look out for sunglasses that block out 99% of 9:%ERH9:&ERHEP[E]WWTIEOXSERSTXMGMERMJyou have any questions or concerns about your child’s eye health.”

How to get the kids to grow thingsAs we reach for the back door, or open a [MRHS[JSVXLI½VWXXMQIMRWIZIVEPQSRXLWwe may spot a daffodil emerging through the cold hard ground, and just maybe the ½VWXWMKLXSJFPYIWO]SZIVLIEH[LEXFIXXIVXMQIXSIRGSYVEKI]SYVGLMPHVIRXSI\TPSVItheir environment and discover the world of gardening. Involving children in gardening GERFIEKVIEXERHJYRI\TIVMIRGIJSVeveryone regardless of age. Children can really get engrossed in planting and caring JSV¾S[IVW¯IZIRXLSWI[MXLWLSVXIVattention spans! Most kids can’t get enough SJXLIERXMGMTEXMSRERHI\GMXIQIRXSJ[EMXMRKfor a seed to sprout or a plant to grow, even QEOMRKQYHTMIWEWEPPGLMPHVIR½RHTPIEWYVIin a patch of soil they can call their own. -QEKMRIWTEVOMRKXLIKVIIR½RKIVWSJPMXXPIchildren, as you point out the wonder of the natural environment around them. And what better way to learn about photosynthesis, by watching it happen in front of your eyes! Show your child the magic of Mother Nature.

Getting StartedGardening doesn’t require a huge garden or EPPSXQIRXMRJEGXMXGEREGXYEPP]FIFIRI½GMEPto start out with smaller spaces such as a [MRHS[FS\SVEVIWXVMGXIHEVIE.YWXIRWYVIthat the allocated area gets enough sunlight and start with a small, manageable project. It needn’t cost a lot of money either – you don’t need to buy anything special or fancy, and if you grow your own fruit and veg then you’ll ultimately be making a saving! Start with margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, and any other small containers you might ½RHP]MRKEVSYRHXLILSYWI-RWXIEHSJJERG]XVE]W[MXLWITEVEXIWIGXMSRW]SY´PP½RHNYWXEWmuch use in empty egg cartons. A lollypop stick can make a great plant label and can be used when dipping out seedlings. And what about a water pistol instead of a watering can. Who would have thought watering the plants could be so much fun. (hum good idea this?)

Opportunity to learnThere is so much for children to learn. )\TPEMRXS]SYRKIVGLMPHVIRXLEXXLIWIIHWhave popped underground and covered up to sleep, helping them understand that they need to be gentle with them and treat them with care. Make sure they know to water regularly and then sit back and watch it grow.

=SYHSR´XLEZIXSFIKVIIR½RKIVIH]SYVWIPJgardening opens up a whole host of great I\TIVMQIRXWERHHMJJIVIRX[E]WSJPSSOMRKat things, almost like having your own laboratory in your kitchen. A good idea to show how plants need time to grow, lots of sunshine and water is to grow three separate pots of cress. Place one in sunlight with plenty of water, one in a dark cupboard with plenty of water, and one in sunlight with no water. The difference will be there to see.

Inspire their sensesWe all have a particular fondness for plants which stimulate our senses and children are no different; point out plants with soft leaves ERHFVMKLX¾S[IVWEVSQEXMGLIVFWWGIRXIH¾S[IVWKVEWWIWERHPIEZIWXLEXVYWXPIwhen blown, etc. These can be particularly FIRI½GMEPJSVGLMPHVIR[MXLWTIGMEPRIIHWERHrequirements. Plants attract wildlife, which GERFILYKIP]I\GMXMRK;MPH¾S[IVWEXXVEGXFIIWERHFYXXIV¾MIWERH[EXGLSYXJSVXLIinsects. All of them have a purpose in the KEVHIRJSVI\EQTPILIHKILSKWERHXSEHWeat the slugs and snails, and worms create holes in the soil.

Kids will eat anything they have grown themselves, just try with peas, cabbage ERHPIXXYGI7LIIVTVMHI[MPPPIRHE¾EZSYVnever to be forgotten. They will realise that whenever they eat yummy fruit and vegetables that someone had to grow them and that we can all grow our own fresh foods.

Prepare for mess! Gardening isn’t a clean business but its lots of fun and easy enough for children to get to grips with. So peel your children away from XLI8:ERHI\TPSVIXLIKEVHIRXSYGLXLI¾S[IVWJIIPXLIPIEZIWERHPSSOJSVFYKW3RGIXLI]KIXMRXLIKEVHIRERHI\TPSVIMRtime they will want to take care of the plants they have learned to love and really gain pleasure along the way.

Enjoy!We do recommend:

Favourite shop Any outdoor shops or bookshops. I love being outdoors and I often go camping so any gadget that makes this more fun is always of interest to me. I am always looking for new books to read and just love bookshops.

Favourite park It has to be Kings Park in Stirling. With 4 kids this park keeps them all entertained. It challenges the older children with the high GLYXIWERH¾]MRKJS\]IXOIITWXLI]SYRKIWXsafe on the pirate climbing boat and sand.

Favourite children’s club/class We love the scouting association I run a scout troop but also often help out at the Beavers! They give fantastic opportunities to the children.

Favourite day out I love to go to castles. There is so much to learn, see and do and it is great fun for all the kids.

Favourite child friendly restaurant With 4 kids this is a challenge but I think the most child friendly for us are the Brewers Fayre either Kincardine or Falkirk.

No parent should be without A sense of humour

Parenting pet hatesMost family tickets are for 2 adult and 2/3 children. This always leaves one of our kids out!

Favourite family holiday spot Comrie Croft – a great camping holiday, beautiful countryside, great birch woodland for the kids to play in. The kind of place great childhood memories are made.

Most loved children’s bookThe Gruffalo in Scots’ – I love reading the book with all of the Scottish words they are so descriptive and it is always fun to read the book.

Most played with toysLego – great fun for all of the kids.
