Children throughout the country are being asked to don their pyjamas to help raise money for The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury.
Humphrey’s Pyjama Week returns this year from 5th-9th October and nurseries, playgroups, primary schools and mother & toddler groups can all get involved. For a voluntary donation of £2, youngsters, staff and parents can wear their favourite PJs for a day during the week and organise themed events such as best-dressed competitions and slumber party games.

New Leisure Centre Opens in SeptemberThe much-anticipated new leisure centre serving Banstead and Tadworth is due to open in late September. The £10.5m complex is just a stones throw from the current Banstead Sports Centre and is the centre piece of a regeneration of the local area, which has included a new children’s play area and skate park in Merland Rise Rec Ground. The newly-named Tadworth Leisure and Community Centre will be a Centre of Excellence for trampolining and basketball, and will offer a wide range of sporting clubs and activities for local families. Facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool,
teaching pool, 5-a-side pitches, dance studio, Ofsted registered crèche, café, sports hall and state of the art gym.
The centre will also adjoin the new facility for the Pheonix Youth Centre, which offers young people a chance to gain life skills in cookery, health and CV writing. From Fear to FriendNew classes to help children overcome their fear of dogs launch in Reigate and Horley. New voluntary group From Fear to Friend invites local children aged 5-11 to spend time in the company of dogs and overcome any anxiety they have around our four-legged friends. Run by local dog trainer Ann Cook, the classes allow children to spend time with dogs in a supervised environment, with activities including grooming, walking and the Reading2Dogs initiative. One mum said “My daughter took part much more than I had hoped for. It’s given her so much more confidence already and she can’t wait for the next session.”
There are 7 dogs in the project, all vetted for their temperament and obedience – including Freya the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Boris the handsome black Labrador. Classes meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Please call 01737 246902 for more information.
After school maths clubs for children aged 5 and up, weekly at Lower Kingswood, Redhill & Epsom
Mole Valley District Council recently launched its Keep it Clean campaign with 120 volunteers lying on the ground to spell out the hashtag for the new campaign #CleanMV. The volunteers gathered at the local beauty spot to highlight the problem of littering, dog fouling, graffiti, fly tipping and other anti-social behavior that spoils our enjoyment of the countryside.

National Adoption WeekThis year’s National Adoption week runs from 19-25 October. Adoption has been in the news recently, with the budget announcement that the government will be investing £30m in helping council’s speed up the adoption process, and support them with finding potential parents outside of their areas. It currently takes an average of 18-months for a child entering care to be adopted, and there are currently 3000 children in the UK waiting to find a permanent home.
The theme of this year’s event is Too Old at 4? which highlights the difficulty in placing older children in new homes, as many of them are part of sibling groups, or may already have specific needs due to their circumstances. Calling All Budding PhotographersCanon cameras has teamed up with the British Red Cross for the 10th year to support the young person’s photography award at the annual Humanitarian Citizenship Awards. Young people aged 17 and under are invited to capture a photograph on the theme of ‘Celebrating Your Community’. The winners (to be announced on Nov 24th) will win a Canon EOS 760D camera to sharpen up their skills. Children’s Centres Closures – Decision PostponedThe future of Steppingstones Children’s Centres in Earlswood and Hurst Green & Holland are still uncertain as Surrey County Council further delays a consultation on whether the centres will close.
Originally the consultation into cuts in children’s services in Surrey was due last Spring, with proposed closures this Autumn, but the official consultation period has yet to be set. The petitions against the closure of the centres now have over 1000 signatures, and are due to close on 31st August, but Earlswood centre manager Hilary Foster said that they would request that the petition be extended into the Autumn to gain as much support as possible.
The centres are an essential service to young families in the local areas – offering support, advice, courses and play sessions for new parents and children. Fiona Padden’s petition to test all pregnant women for Strep B reaches OVER 194,000 SIGNATURES (at time of press).
Strep B campaigner Fiona Padden sadly lost her newborn son Edward to Strep B when he was just 9 days old, and is now petitioning for a simple £11 test to be standard procedure for all mums-to-be on the NHS. Strep B is a normal bacteria carried by 20-30% of women without harm, but in some cases the infection is carried to the baby during labour, resulting in life threatening conditions like meningitis, and the death of one in 10 babies.
This is a preventable infection that can be treated with intravenous antibiotics if caught in time, so sign the petition now on Group B Strep Support website www.gbss.org.uk.

Ballet for BabiesAwards-winning Babyballet East Surrey successfully relaunched earlier this year, and are now introducing new Tots classes for little ones from 6 months old.

Kiddicaru opens in SeptemberThe brand new state-of-the-art Kiddicaru nursery will open this September, on the Watercolour estate in Redhill, adding a much-needed new nursery facility to the area. The nursery will accept children on the free early years childcare scheme, as part of wrap-around care.

STEP 1 Paint the lid and the box green. Draw on the hairline in pencil and then paint with black paint. Cut out two semi circles for the eyes and with the felt tip pen draw on the eyes. Stick these onto the lid of the box. Use the felt tip pen to draw on the mouth and scar (you can give him a silly expression here!). With the pencil add shadow to his eyes and draw a nose. Use your finger to smudge it.
STEP 2 Push a straw through a bead and cut to whatever length you want your bolts. Place the box on its side, use the PVA to glue the bolts in place. Leave to dry and your Frankenstein box is ready to hold your secret stash of Halloween treats.

Kip McGrath Education Centre Opens in ReigateReigate and Redhill’s first Education Centre opens this September, set up by long-standing local teacher, Sharon Richardson. Sharon is delighted to be able to use her skills to help support children with maths, English, reading, writing and comprehension.
The Kip McGrath centre, which is based in Reigate, offers a friendly environment within which children come to work on individually tailored programmes. Lime Tree Pupils Move to New School
It is an exciting new school year for pupils at Lime Tree School in Reigate, who will be moving into their brand new premises on Battlebridge Lane, Redhill in the next few months. The first occupants will be the Nursery and Reception classes, from September, with the rest of the school moving into the two-storey block from January 2016.

Road safety charity Brake recently conducted a survey that revealed that only 25% of parents believed their child’s route to school was safe. Brake have launched the Go 20 campaign, encouraging drivers to slow down to 20mph in areas with a high number of pedestrians and cyclists. With almost half of the UK’s primary school children bring driven to school, Brake is encouraging parents to walk or cycle with their kids to keep fit and enjoy the benefits of being outdoors.

Polka Theatre writing competition for
budding playwrightsThe Wimbledon-based children’s theatre is offering kids the chance to have their own creations included in a new professionally staged Polka show opening in April 2016.
In conjunction with the V&A’s Museum of Childhood archives, the theatre is asking children to write a story inspired by one of the photos in the museum’s collection. Stories can be submitted by schools or individuals and children can write their stories on their own, in pairs or groups. Garden Tips for AutumnAlthough the summer sunshine is starting to wane, your garden still has plenty to offer, so here are a few tips on getting the most from it in these last few weeks.
Now is the best time to plant spring flowering bulbs like daffodils. These bulbs like a sunny site with well-drained soil. It’s best to plant them in groups (about 6 bulbs) for an effective show.
For those growing pumpkins for Halloween, make sure that you sit the fruit on an old tile to prevent rot, and make sure any shading leaves are cut back to expose the fruit to the sun. Leave some seed heads standing over the winter. They provide a valuable food source to birds and important shelter for insects.
Garden Game: Supply your child(ren) with an empty matchbox each and challenge them to see who can find and fit the most items in their box. All the items should be from the garden i.e. no loom bands! See who comes back with the most interesting collection of garden goodies.
