What is Family?

Families are who you love. Our families all “look” different and it's always been so. A family care giving unit might consist of a couple; a mother, father and children; a single parent and child; grandparent and grandchildren; a sibling group; a circle of friends; or however that family defines itself.

Types of Family:

Following are the types of family W.R.T Composition, Descent Generation, Locality and Power.

Nuclear Family:

It is the type of family in which the married couple and their unmarried children live.

Joint Family:

It is the type of family in which the married couple and their unmarried children live.

Extended Family:

It is type of family in which the married couple, their children and other family members live.

Types of Family W.R.T Descent Generation

Patrilineal Family:

It is the type of family in which individuals are indentified through their male side of ancestors.

 Matrilineal Family:

It is the type of family in which individuals are indentified through the females side of their ancestors.

Bi-lineal Family:

The type of family in which the individuals are indentified through male as well as female side of the ancestors.

Patrilocal Family:

It is the type of family in which the female goes to the male house,

Matrilocal Family:

It is the type of family in which the female couple live in the female house after marriage.

Neo-Local Family:

It is the type of family which married couple neither live in the male house nor the female house after marriage.

Patriarchy:

It is the type of family in which male has the power of decision making.

Matriarchy:

It is the type of family in which female has the power of decision making.

Democratic:

It is the type family in which male and female both have equal rights of decision making.

Some other TerminologiesFamily of procreation: It is established with the couple have their first child.

Family of Orientation: Family oriented means that the person is devoted to his family and like to be with

them. It could mean that it is geared towards family.

Cohabitation: The living together of male and female without marriage is called cohabitation.

Levirate: The marriage in which an individual marry his brother wife the death of his

brother is called levirate.

Sororate: The marriage in individual marry his wife’s sister after the death of his wife is

called Sororate.

Application Structural Functionalism on Family Family organizes itself for survival as a subsystem of society.

Family is a unit of consumption which can be appealed to by advertisers keen to sell a wide range of household appliances so as to maintain profits.

Family can play a greater role in health maintenance, school education, diet and exercise.

Women within the family may continue to play a major role in the care of elderly relatives some of whom may not wish to enter old peoples homes.

Sense strength and unity.

Application of Conflict Analysis on Family Burden on bread winners financially in extended families.

Difficult for female to maintain house hold works due to the excessive number of family members.

Usually conflicts occurs between the females.

Bounds the females to the house boundaries.

Females don not get equal chance to prove themselves .

Promotes gender stratification.
