The tombstones herein recorded were viewed and transcribed by us with two exceptions; Haw River PresbyterianChurch Cemetery, Rockingham County, N.C., which was given to us by the late Mrs. C.L. Pritchett of Osceola, N.C.and The Cone Family Cemetery. Gr< 3nsboro, N.C, which was furnished by Herman Cone, Jr. Every effort was made onour part to find and record accurately all tombstones existing today in these old cemeteries. However, due to vandalism, erosion of stones and in many instances dense impregnable undergrowth, we cannot state with absolute certaintythat we found all remaining markers.
We would like to thank our many guides for their assistance in our exploration of the county and its borderingterritory, especially Mrs. Margie Green, Mrs. Ruth Thompson, Miss Kathleen Hoskins, the late Mrs. C.L. Pritchett, Messrs.Poley Adams, Gordon Cable, C.H. Darden, Ned Dillard, W. Calvin Hinshaw, Clarence Lewis, Egbert Murrow, JerryNix, Garland Stout, and Ellis Swain.

The Elm Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, about an acre in size and surrounded by a rock wall, lies on the north
side of Hwy. No. 158, 0.9 mi. west of its intersection with U.S. 220, alongside the gate of an adjoining rock guarry.
There are perhaps 40 unmarked native headstones; several of the carved headstones are engulfed and protected by box-
woods. (Recorded 1975).

^1 The John Cummings Cemetery (Rockingham County). Proceed north from Witty's Crossroad (on U.S. 1 58) on Witty
Road (No. 2351) 0.8 mi. to the Troublesome Creek bridge. The family cemetery lies in the wooded area on the south side
of the creek, perhaps "200 yards" from the road on elevated ground, consists only of unmarked primitive headstones.
We were unable to identify it on one search. According to a descendant, Mr. A. G. MacWilliams who lives on U.S. 158,
this John Cummings was not a member of the Nottingham Colony which founded Buffalo Presbyterian Church, but
settled here about 1765 with a large family and owned several hundred acres on the south side of Troublesome Creek.
|1-E IThe Witty Cemetery. Some 20 yards west of Wittys Crossroads (Rockingham County) on U.S. 158, a dirt farm road
on the south leads along the right border of one cultivated plot, turns left to skirt a larger cultivated field, thence
left across a stream bed (better walk). Skirt the tree line to the right to elevated land; the cemetery lies about 25 yards
in the woods on a knoll, perhaps a half-acre in size. There are three large carved headstones, about a dozen primitive
slabs in two rows (two faintly etched), and some thirty unmarked primitive headstones.

1-E Unidentified Church Cemetery. On the north side of Scalesville Road (No. 1002), 0.2 mi. east of DavenportDairy Road (No. 2310), the curving tree line 100 yards north marks the edge of the former road bed. Beneath the trees,
marked by a taller sentinel tree at its western edge lies an old cemetery, scattered over a considerable area, not
compactly grouped. There are at least thirty sunken gravesites evident, many with primitive headstones. No carved
stones are seen. This property is owned by Mr. C. H. Darden of Greensboro, and the nearby home is occupied by his
tenant, Mr. Atkins. (Recorded 1973).
1-F| The Winchester-Reed Cemetery (Rockingham County). A short distance beyond the Rockingham County line,
Scalesville Road (No. 1002) crosses the small Haw River. Proceed about 75 yards and turn west onto a dirt farm road
which doubles back towards the river, passes through an iron gate, and continues 0.7 mi. (not in wet weather) to an old
wooden house on the right. The cemetery lies in the woods behind this house, about 100 yards N.N.E. by compass. There
are a dozen primitive unmarked headstones and six carved stones.

1-F Unidentified Church Cemetery (Rockingham County). On the S.E. side of Scalesville Road, 0.5 mi. before its
junction with Church Street Extension (No. 1001), behind a cluster of cedar trees and dense honeysuckle, and across
the road from an old log tobacco bam, lies a rather large scattered cemetery with many sunken gravesites and
many primitive unmarked stones. Only six carved stones are found.

1-F| The Stephen Henry Cemetery. About 0.1 mi. N.E. of the above mentioned cemetery, about 50 yards east of
Scalesville Road in an open field is a small clump of trees partially concealing two carved (one broken and one
primitive) headstones. Beneath the nearby trees to the west are several sunken gravesites and unmarked primitive
stones, thought to have been the graves of slaves. This is the property of Mr. B. O'Bryant whose home faces Church
Street Extension. (Recorded 1973).

north 3.2 mi. on Spearman Road (No. 2500) and park 25 yards beyond the Mill Creek bridge. Circumnavigate the high
bank on the east side of the road to reach the cemetery some 50 yards up the hill. These stones are unusually large and
ornate, well preserved, perhaps 4 feet high. The first four are surrounded by a stone wall, two others just outside, andthe remainder about 25 feet away.

1-K| The Haw River Presbyterian Church (1762-1866) Cemetery (Rockingham County). On the south side of CandyCreek Road (No. 2627) at a point 0.9 mi. west of Hwy. No. 150 and 1.9 mi. east of U.S. No. 29, a dirt road passes an old
dwelling, turns right past a barn and thence curves southward to the trees at the top of the hill, where the cemetery is
sheltered. There are many unmarked gravesites, many native headstones, and the following listing of legible stones wasgiven to us by the late Mrs. C. L. Pritchett of Osceola, rearranged alphabetically. The property belongs to Mr. Bose
Pritchett. (Recorded 1973).

1-K The Pritchett Family Cemetery (Rockingham County). Driving north on Hwy. No. 150 from Osceola, turn east
on No. 2626 for 0.45 mi., turn right (dry weather only) alongside the fields to a tobacco barn on left at 1 .2 mi. Fifty yards
ahead in a grove of trees on the right side of the road (?) lies the cemetery, carpeted with periwinkle. A dozen sunken
gravesites are recognized. Only one flat headstone is seen, still standing, but the etched inscription is illegible.
2-B The Nelson-Brookbank Cemetery. Proceed north on Hwy. No. 68 from Oak Ridge intersection with Hwy. No. 1501.7 mi. (0.6 mi. N. of intersection with Harrell Road East (No. 21 1 1), turn east into an eroded private driveway past the
vacant house, past a barn on the left and another barn on the right, continuing due east 0.3 mi. to a cultivated field. Walkacross the field E.S.E. to the woods, and through the woods about 75 yards, following a gully on the left — a one-time road
to the cemetery. This farm belongs to Mrs. Velner B. Carpenter of Greensboro. There are about two dozen gravesites,
about half with unmarked native headstones. Two crude stones bear illegible markings. (Recorded 1974).

Road (No. 32109) 1.9 mi., and southwest on Friddlewood Road (No. 2110) to its terminus at a tenant's home on the
property of Mr. C. H. Darden of Greensboro. Proceed by jeep or on foot straight ahead to the left of a big tree, along anabandoned farm road (profuse poison ivy) 0.35 mi. On the right shoulder of the road, surrounded by a native stone wall,
is a cemetery about 75 feet square with about 30 recognizable gravesites, many with unmarked primitive headstones.

[2^B] The Peagram-Endsley Cemetery. From the Tatum cemetery (above) proceed straight ahead about 0. 1 mi. About25 feet to the east, obscured by trees and undergrowth, a rather large shaped stone slab (No. 1) still stands, andtwo other carved stones are found. At least 15 sunken gravesites, some with primitive headstones, are scattered amongthe trees, suggesting that this was a church cemetery overlooking the Haw River long ago.

2-D|The Bruce Cemetery in Summerfield where BUGLER GILLIS of Revolutionary War fame lies buried, is on the east
side of the main street opposite a State Historical Marker, now marked by a small flower garden and tree. CHARLESBRUCE was granted land in 1767, operated a tavern at Bruce's Crossroads (now Summerfield), and was a member of the
Council of State in 1791. He, his wife, ELIZABETH BENTON, children and grandchildren are buried here. Only onelegible stone remains.

2-D The Case Family Cemetery lies on the east side of U.S. No. 220 at Summerfield, just south of a new residential
development. Turn off on U.S. No. 220 on a dirt road, about 50 yards north of the junction of Myers Park Road (No. 2219)junction on the west side. At 0.3 mi. make a sharp right turn for another 0.4 mi. to a cleared field. The cemetery lies
beneath the trees just left of this clearing. There are about thirty recognizable graves, many with unmarked primitive
headstones. Only one marked stone was found, fallen, broken and covered with leaves. Our guide reported that there
were other carved stones here in the past. (Recorded 1973).

l2-P) The Highfill Cemetery No. 1. From U.S. No. 220 at Summerfield, proceed east on Scalesville Road (No. 1002)
0.8 mi., thence south on Millbrook Road (No. 2313) 0.6 mi., into the driveway of Mr. Howard Waynick to the gate of his
barnyard. Directly ahead (S.E. by compass) about 150 yards stands an unusually tall cedar tree on the fence line
between two fields. There are three square rough unmarked obelisk stones of different height and smaller footstones.
Mr. Waynick came here in 1965 and knows nothing of their identity.
2-D_ The J. W. Highfill Cemetery. A quarter of a mile to the east, on the west shoulder of Strader Road (No. 2316), a
wedge-shaped stand of trees (30 x 75 feet) extends into cultivated fields, owned by Mrs. Velner B. Carpenter of Greensboro.
Carpeted with periwinkle, this cemetery is thickly overgrown. There were at least 7 unmarked native headstones,
perhaps a dozen other sunken gravesites, three of which had been vandalized and left open, one of them marked by a
large white unmarked slab. No carved stones were found, but a neighbor recalled that there were 20-25 stones there
which disappeared about 1940. This was the family cemetery of John William Highfill.
2-D_The Highfill Cemetery No. 2. Highfill Road (No. 2312) is a deadend road northward from Scalesville Road, about
0.9 mi. east of U.S. No. 220. Another old cemetery lies 0.5 mi. west of this road at at point 0.4 mi. north of Scalesville
Road. It is best approached via Mr. Turman Doggett's driveway, past his machine shop, proceeding on a zig-zagging
but good dirt road (through locked gates) northward 0.6 mi. to a sharp turn left alongside the cemetery
beneath the trees. There are perhaps 20 gravesites evident, nine unmarked native headstones, and only one
roughly carved stone slab.

2-D The Carter-Hobbs Cemetery. This property between Strawberry (No. 2317) and Strader (No. 2316) Road on the
north side of Hwy. No- 150 passed from theCarters to the Hobbs and is now owned by Mr. L. A. Walker, who escorted us
to the cemetery. From Strawberry Road 0.45 mi. north of Hwy. No. 150, we walked due west 0.4 mi. to the woods, thence
0.3 mi. S.S.W. partly along logging trails. Several stones stand about 18 inches and are readily visible. There are
several unmarked sunken gravesites, about 25 unmarked native headstones arranged irregularly in 4 rows, and three
crudely marked stones.

on Royster Road (No. 2332) 0.7 mi. and stop at the brick chimney of a burned home. Looking south from this point,
across a cultivated field, the cemetery lies in the second wooded promontory on the eastern edge of the field, carpeted
with periwinkle, honeysuckle & undergrowth (ca 300 yards). There are at least four primitive headstones, several
unmarked sunken gravesites and two carved stones.

(No. 1001), proceed 1.5 mi. beyond the intersection of Spencer-Dixon Road (No. 2329); turn west via a farm road to the
large twin oaks and park. Follow the tree line along the west side of the field until it turns north; the cemetery lies
50 yards southward in the woods near a more conspicuous group of junked cars. At least 15 sunken gravesites are
evident in addition to 6 carved headstones; our guide recalls another stone near the tree line and perhaps others hidden bythe leaves. From its size, this was presumably a church cemetery. (Recorded 1973).

this is 1.4 mi. south of Hwy. No. 150. Proceed down the driveway to the tobacco barns, bearing to the right behind
them, thence westward again along the fence ca 300 yards; the left fork leads past a 10 x 15 foot cemetery surrounded
by a crumbling 2-foot wall of field stones. No headstones nor other markers were found in the dense compost covering the
ground. (This property has been in the Dogget family for many years; Mr. James Doggett is sure of the Maxwell identity,
and believes there were three graves here.) (Recorded 1975).
2-G The Gordon-Vaughn Cemetery. In the N.E. corner of the junction of Fairgrove Church Road (No. 2504) with
Hwy. No. 150 1 .2 mi. west of Brown Summit is a small white house owned by Mrs. Ruby Bevill and occupied by a tenant.

Another more recent grave with obliterated temporary funeral home marker.
2-J The Gum Grove Presbyterian Church (1820-1858) Cemetery lies about 25 yards west of Jackson School Road
(No. 2730), 0.3 mi. south of Highway No. 150 and 50 yards south of a residential driveway on the opposite side of the
road. A once-cleared area just west of the cemetery and the remnants of a road between them suggests the site of the
church building. Less than 10 sunken gravesites are recognized, several with unmarked native headstones. Only one
carved stone is evident, moved from its site, leaning against a tree with its footstone.

family groupings, in north-south rows beginning in the N.W. corner, thus filling the northern half of the cemetery. Eachgrave was equipped with a concrete base for a small headstone; only a small percentage of carved stones were added.
Some of the bases have the name embossed in the concrete with no other data. The south half of the cemetery has been
more recently used, with larger stones and some family groupings. The following legible stones were recorded in the
older part with death dates prior to 1915.

§jfj Holt's Chapel Methodist Cemetery (No church) lies just south of Holt's Chapel Road as it leaves 2412 East Market
Street in Greensboro. These headstones (ca 25) are listed on p. 227, Cemetery Records of North Carolina byD.A.R. (Greensboro City Library, Accession N.C 929.3/W2385).
6-K The Sikes Cemetery lies about 100 yards east of Sedalia Road, 0.3 mi. north of its junction with U.S. No. 70 at
Sedalia, in the wooded area E.N.E. of the residence with the concrete driveway. About 30 feet in diameter, it is
encircled by stumps of cedar trees, now protected by a wire fence. A pair of adult graves is surrounded by a low stone
wall; a carved headstone said to have been here has been removed. A deeply sunken adjacent grave, also unmarked,
suggests that it has been pillaged. One small carved stone leans against a stump, near a small footstone.

Z^Ll The Lindsay Cemetery lies N.W. of Sandy Ridge Road (No. 1850), 3.0 mi. south of 1-40 at Colfax . A point 0.2 mi.
S.W. of the junction of Johnson Street Extension (No. 1818) a rough farm road leads across a wooded ravine about
100 yards to a cultivated field; turn left and follow the tree line about 75 yards to a wooded promontory sheltering
the cemetery. One unmarked headstone and five legible carved stones are found. The old Lindsay home stood 0.3 mi.
west of the Johnson Street junction, where a marker commemorates the first county seat of Guilford at his home.
(Recorded 1976).

l7-E[ The Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery has been levelled and is now a grassed elevated side yard
adjoining the Rolling Roads Church of the Nazarene, 2207 Rheims Street, S.E. of the Four Seasons Mall in Greensboro.
Entry steps are flanked by brick pediments, one bearing an unmarked native headstone, the other a bronze
plaque: "In grateful memory ofJonathan Short who donated this land in 1839 for the Glory of God. " A granite headstone
has been incorporated in a nearby brick monument, simply inscribed:
1. SHORT, Jonathan Apr 22, 1847
7-E The Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery is still used by the Glenwood Methodist Church; the original church
building was situated on the east side of Freeman Mill Road about 50 yards N.E. of the cemetery in the 2500 block of
Freeman Mill Road in Greensboro, on the west side. (Recorded 1976).
(The proposed new U.S. No. 220 was surveyed to cross Mt. Zion cemetery. The State of North Carolina
purchased the property from Glenwood Methodist Church and authoried the removal of all bodies Summer, 1977.
The bodies were claimed by nearest of kin and removed to cemeteries of their choice. The unidentified and unclaimed
bodies were removed to Guilford Memorial Park, 5900 High Point Road. In some instances there were graves on top
of graves.)

IB-El An Unidentified Family Cemetery is said to lie beneath the litter beneath a clump of trees which has been fenced
in for a dog pen, about 25 yards behind an old frame residence on the west side of Drummond Road (No. 1392), opposite
the Salvage Disposal Company's enclosure. No marked stones are evident within the dog pen nor beneath the overgrown
trash pile behind it. The owner is a black whose grandfather bought his property before 1900 from a Mr. Paschall.
Before that it is said to have belonged to a Benbow. He recalls that there were perhaps twenty native headstones here
at one time, some bearing carved initials; he recalls none with a surname.
|10-C|The Breedlove-Hill-Holder Cemetery lies in the wooded southeast corner of the intersection of Kivett Drive
(No. 1113) and Kersey Street (No. 1 158), 0.5 mi. east of the Kivett Road - 1-85 intersection. This is said to have been
the site of a Friends Meeting House, now owned by Springfield Friends Meeting. We failed to find the Noah Breedlove
stone previously recorded by others. (Recorded 1976).

10-Gl The Dickey Cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall about 25 feet square and occupies the crest of a woodedtract on the west side of Hwy. No. 22. The property is now owned by Mr. C. H. Kirkman, great grandson of Peter
Kirkman, who purchased it from the Dickey heirs about 1860. About 0.25 mi. south of the junction of Appomattox Road
and Hwy. No. 22, the entry to an abandoned residence on the west is blocked by a chain. From the house, proceed
southward about 50 yards, turn right and follow a wide curving arc like a question mark to the higher ground. The large
flat stones covering the graves are badly stained and worn and difficult to decipher.

The Timber Ridge Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery is located in Randolph County, not far from the Guilford
County line. From U. S. No. 220 at Level Cross, proceed east on Petty Road (No. 2101) 0.6 mi. and turn north in dry
weather only into a dirt farm road, taking the right fork to join a power-line service road for 100 yards, then left on the
farm road again to park at 0.95 mi. by a trash dump. The cemetery lies northward about 50 yards, best approached
around the left side of the intervening thicket. The cemetery covers about an acre, partly carpeted with periwinkle; there
are many native headstones, many crudely scratched; the carved headstones are chiefly at the western end of the
cemetery. This property was given to the church about 1803 by Christopher Vickrey, and the surrounding farm is
presently owned by a descendant, Dick Vickory, who lives 1 . 1 mi. east of Level Cross on No. 2101 (Recorded 1975).

3J The Wyrick Cemetery No. 2 On the south side of Turner Smith Road (No. 2733), just west of the junction of Jackson
School Road (No. 2730), stands an old bam. A dirt road leads almost due south past the barn 0.6 mi. to a saw mill on the
south edge of a large field. Walk east along this tree line about 50 yards, south about 40 yards, and again east about 30yards, where a logging trail enters the woods southward; follow it 30 yards, then turn east 30 yards through the woods to a
large Vz acre cemetery, heavily carpeted with periwinkle. Several tall tulip poplars and smaller cedars constitute a marker
at the tree line. No carved stones are seen, but we observed one unmarked slab stone, a dozen native headstones, and perhaps
fifty unmarked sunken gravesites. This property was inherited by Mrs. Hugh O'Connor, who lives in the white house almost
opposite the barn, and her brother. It was first purchased by her grandfather Smith after the Civil War. She is certain this
was a black cemetery, recalling long ago funeral processions in which pallbearers carried the caskets from the highway to
the cemetery.
