Todd County Extension Family & Consumer Sciences
Newsletter
July 2020
Spread Joy Across the nation, we are experiencing daily changes and disruptions in our daily lives and activities based on increasing recommendations for social distancing and lockdowns. As a result, people are feeling stressed, sad, and overwhelmed as events and experiences are being missed. But in the midst of crisis, stories of people spreading joy provide hope and can be used as motivation to find your own method for making someone happy. For example, when a little boy named Aiden from Detroit turned 4 years old, his family played it safe and did not throw a birthday party for him. Instead, his neighbors placed a sign outside of his home and asking passersby to “honk for the birthday boy.” A man in Connecticut, who could not visit his wife in her nursing home because of a mandated quarantine, found a way to celebrate their 67th anniversary. He stood outside her window with a sign that read, “I’ve loved you 67 years and still do. Happy Anniversary.” In response, his wife waved and blew him a kiss from her second-floor window. To date, they have never spent an anniversary apart.
These stories made national news because they are sweet, but also because they can be inspiring. Spread joy because you want to, but also keep in mind that happiness can enhance heart health by lowering heart rate and blood pressure, it strengthens the immune system, combats stress, reduces aches and pains, enhances overall health and well-being, and contributes to healthy overall aging. What are some simple ways in which you can spread joy during this trying time in your community? Share what you do with your county Extension office. Spread the joy! Source: Amy F. Kostelic, Extension specialist for Adult Development and Aging References: UC Berkeley. (2015). Greater Good Magazine: Science-based insights for a meaningful life. Healthy at Home Calendar The July Healthy at Home Calendar is included with this newsletter. Hope you have enjoyed having the calendars and hope you have been using them to be healthy at home.
The Power of a Positive Attitude Because the connection between the mind and body is so strong, an overall positive attitude, including an upbeat outlook on life, can affect overall happiness, health, and well-being. Similar to eating well and getting plenty of exercise, good health practices should be a habit that start early in life. A positive attitude can affect mental health and physical functioning including the ability to fight disease and infection. Attitude can also affect relationships and social networks and can help make success in life more likely. The bottom line is being more positive across the lifespan causes less stress and enables people to live healthier, happy lives. Reference: Traywick**, L.S., & Hosier, A.F. (October 2014). Positive Attitude. University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service FCS778. http://www.uaex.edu/healthliving/aging/01%20%20Attitude%20.pdf Source: Amy F. Kostelic, Extension specialist for Adult Development and Aging
Fit Blue Virtual 5K & 10K FitBlue Family! Did you hear the news? We have a new challenge planned for July as part of our #FACSSizzlinSummer series - a state-wide 5K or 10K race! We are so excited to have people from across Kentucky join us for another activity challenge. Whether you plan to walk or run a 5K for the first time, or want to challenge yourself to
increase your distance to a 10K, we invite you to stay active and join us as we work toward race weekend at the end of July! Use the HealthyAtHome calendar for a guided training plan to keep you on track to reach your goal (included with newsletter). There won't be a registration link this time, but we will have another virtual finish line the weekend of the race. The first 500 participants who cross the virtual finish line will receive a free UK sweat towel. Are you in?!
Weekly Packets Watch the Todd County Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Facebook Page for our Sizzlin Summer Packets. We put them out front of the Courthouse each week on Wednesday for pick-up. If you would like to reserve one, call the Extension Office at 270-265-5659.
Puzzles & More Hope you enjoy the puzzles, word searches, and other items included in this newsletter! ********************************************* Please contact me if I can be of assistance to you! Sincerely, Jill B. Harris Jill B. Harris County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences Education

********************************************
Join Family and Consumer Sciences Extension as we spread sunshine across the state by creating, finding and sharing random acts of kindness. Using the prompts below during the week of July 5-11, look
for completed actions in your neighborhood, community or across the state. You might be a witness, see reference to it on social media or complete the random act of
kindness. Whatever your role, we encourage you to share with #OperationKYSunshine.
Mow it Monday Provide free lawn and garden care to someone who is unable to do it for themselves.
Take and Bake Tuesday
Provide a meal or baked good for a neighbor, family member, or friend.
Word up! Wednesday Write a note, send a card, or post an encouraging message to someone who is in a
care facility or confined to home.
Transform Thursday Creatively transform something – chalk a sidewalk mural or write an uplifting message, put flowers around
an unsuspecting neighbor’s mailbox, give the entrance sign to your neighborhood a facelift, or attach a helium balloon to every mailbox on your street.
Feel Good Friday
Share how #OperationKYSunshine has made you smile or brought a smile to someone else’s face this week.
Self-care Saturday Do something kind for yourself.
