Parents and children were welcomed by Janice Wilson to the Family Centre-Merkinch Children’s Community Library. A special welcome was given to Drew Hendry, MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey and children’s author Pauline Mackay. Janice said that the library is for all children in the Merkinch community and has been built on the kindness of donations from authors, publishers, The Scottish Book Trust, Inverness Library, local businesses and many individuals. They now have over a thousand books, which Janice said is wonderful! Serenity is a drop-in centre for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It runs every Monday 11.00am-1.00pm for ANYONE with BPD and every Saturday 12.00pm-2.00pm for females at the Pentecostal Church Hall, Inverness.
The drop-in is facilitated by people with experience of BPD and was set up to take people out of isolation and to help them start socialising.

With the children back at school it’s a good time to reflect upon a busy summer at the Nature Reserve. The Junior
Rangers have enjoyed learning about the birds and animals in the reserve as well as creating art and having fun. We’ve
also had general workshops and events in shelter building, exploring the seashore, being a wildlife detective and
foraging along our food trail.
Carnarc Point was opened officially by our MP Drew Hendry. The much improved pathway means that it’s accessible to all and new benches and
tables are perfect for a picnic; although we had downpours on the evening in question! It’s a fabulous spot to sit and watch the boats arriving and
departing, to see wildlife and to just sit and relax; we hope that you’ll all enjoy it.

Family Centre - Merkinch - Children's Library Update

Janice concluded by saying their aim is to encourage a love for sharing books and to build relationships. She then invited Pauline to introduce herself before sharing one of her stories. Pauline thanked everyone for coming and said that she was born and raised in Merkinch and, as a child, would sit at the window in her Grandmother’s house on Thornbush Road, writing stories and not knowing she would become a children’s author. She then introduced the characters from her book ‘Where is Wee MacNessie’, carefully pulling out Suzy the Salmon and then Dolly the Dragonfly from her story-sack, but Fergus Frog was nowhere to be found! Just as well Archie, one of the children spotted Fergus, he was hiding on a rock! Pauline then shared her Scottish tale, telling the adventure of the friends’ search for Wee MacNessie. Everyone joined in singing with Pauline “You can’t catch a rainbow” and there was a wee bit of dancing! Pauline also invited everyone along to her upcoming book launch on Saturday the 26th of October at the Inverness Botanical Gardens. The event ended with a few words from Drew Hendry, MP, saying it was wonderful to be there and to have been invited to come along and see
and hear about the good work that the library is doing in the community. He said that literacy and storytelling are very important for early learning
development. Drew said he had a great time and wished the library the very best going forward and that they had his full support.

We were so excited to receive our first completed book review by nine-year-old Leah MacPherson. Leah shares her thoughts on the book ‘Hamster in a Hamper’ by John Butler. Leah got her first sticker of three for completing her first book review. When children reach their third review they get a certificate and a wee something special! In Leah's book report, she wrote: "I like it because it's about a little hamster who got stuck in a hamper and a girl called Mandy with her friend James." The aim of the Library is for local children to borrow books to read and enjoy at home with their parents, carers, siblings, grandparents and friends. We celebrate the amazing impact that sharing a book with a child can have; nurturing a love for books. A child is never too young! Babies and children love to hear the sound of their parent’s voice. They are learning all the time, making a multitude of brain connections, strengthening the building of their brains at such a critical time in their development. It’s about relationship, bonding, and learning together. The children’s library is open every Tuesday afternoon between 12.30pm to 4.00pm for all children in the Merkinch community. Home-Start supports mums, dads and families that may feel vulnerable in some
way, or face challenges because of things like isolation or lack of a wider family network. we provide emotional and practical support to parents in their own homes and our trained volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.
Our volunteers are normally parents or grand-parents themselves and have a good common sense understanding of the challenges involved in raising a family.
All our volunteers receive training and we meet all costs and expenses involved in helping the families we support.

Merkinch Football Academy Report
We will be announcing dates for restarting football training in a few weeks once everyone is settled in the school. That includes Primary 1/2/3, P4/5, P6/7 and P Girls. Also the Street League under-15 and under-17 teams will be finishing off their League matches and any
other cup matches within the next couple of months. Our Under-15’s played the first of two Cup Finals this month where they beat Balloan 1-0 at Milton Pitches. They have another Cup Final next Saturday against Balloan again at Caledonian Stadium. More details in next month’s News & Views. Ingredients
100g basmati rice
200g green bean, topped and tailed, then halved
1½ tbsp sunflower oil
140g pork mince
4 tsp dark soy sauce
2 tsp rice wine
1 tsp caster sugar
¼ tsp Sichuan pepper, lightly crushed using a pestle and mortar
1 red chilli, halved and sliced
4 fat garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 small knob of ginger, finely chopped
3 spring onions, 2 finely chopped, 1 sliced for garnish
2 tsp sesame oil
Method
1. Cook the rice following pack instructions. Boil the
beans for 4 mins, then drain under cold water, pat dry
and set aside.
2. In a large non-stick wok or frying pan, heat 1 tbsp of
the oil. Add the pork mince and fry for a few mins,
breaking up into small pieces with the back of a spoon.
Stir in half the soy, the rice wine and sugar and cook for
30 secs more. When the meat is cooked through, tip
onto a plate.
3. Heat the remaining oil in the pan. Add the pepper,
chilli, garlic, ginger and chopped onions, and stir-fry for
2 mins until ginger and garlic are softened. Tip in the
beans, heat through, then add the mince – stir-fry for 2
mins until hot. Stir in the rest of the soy and sesame oil.
Scatter with spring onions and serve with rice.

Merkinch Remembered - The Circus at Capel Inch
One of the earliest circuses to visit Inverness was Ord’s, the creator being Thomas Ord born c.1778. At age 14 years, Thomas ran away from home to join the circus and by 1812 he was the proud owner of his own business and renowned for his horse skills. He frequented Inverness in the 1840s, and performed ‘free exhibitions’ on the open space at the Maggot Green. The Maggot was originally an island and took its name from a chapel of St. Margaret. It was situated between Waterloo Place, Glebe Street and the River Ness. Profits came from the sale of tickets at 6d. (6 old pence) each to spectators throughout the performance. After the death of Thomas and his wife in 1859, their daughter carried on the circus and in 1861 she married Edwin Pinder. The circus then became known as Pinder-Ord’s. Accompanying a circus would be a menagerie full of exotic animals, such as lions, tigers, hyenas, bears etc. Previously just put on show, they were then made to perform.
The Maggot Green and Davis Square were popular pitches, but as the circuses grew larger they also set up at the Capel Inch, the land on Anderson Street closest to the riverside where the playpark is situated. In 1863 Messrs Pinders - The New Exhibition Circus paid a visit to Inverness and on the 18th July 1899 Pinder-Ord’s Royal Circus & Menagerie performed at the Capel Inch.
Another circus which frequented the town and performed at the Capel Inch was Bostock & Wombwell’s. Both designated ‘Royal’ having performed for Queen Victoria, who had been a great fan of all circuses.
Eventually the Capel Inch became too small to accommodate the more lavish performances.

Earlier this month we went for a walk along the river, we saw lots of ducks which was very exciting. We went a walk again and took some oats to feed them. The children had lots of fun and we learned the importance of not feeding bread to the ducks as it is not healthy for them. We also bumped into 'Oor Wullie'... so we just had to get a picture! Quicksand is a fascinating
substance, make some of your own and experiment on a safe scale. Amaze your friends by demonstrating how it works.
What you'll need:
1 cup of cornflour
Half a cup of water
A large plastic container
A spoon
Instructions:
This one is simple, just mix the cornflour and water thoroughly in the container to make your own instant quick sand.
When showing other people how it works, stir slowly and drip the quick sand to show it is a liquid.
Stirring it quickly will make it hard and allow you to punch or poke it quickly (this works better if you do it fast rather than hard).
Remember that quick sand is messy, try to play with it outside and don’t forget to stir just before you use it.
Always stir instant quicksand just before you use it!

If you add just the right amount of water to cornflour it becomes very thick when you stir it quickly. This happens because the cornflour grains are mixed up and can’t slide over each other due to the lack of water between them. Stirring slowly allows more water between the cornflour grains, letting them slide over each other much easier.
Poking it quickly has the same effect, making the substance very hard. If you poke it slowly it doesn’t mix up the mixture in the same way, leaving it runny. It works in much the same way as real quick sand.

Some of you might of noticed that we have a new display up in the nursery. This display will be up all year round and each term you child will be asked to draw a self portrait. This is a great way to show progression and development of your child's early writing skills and creative skills. We look forward to developing this with each child and celebrating how we are unique. Over the next few weeks we hope to have each child's portrait displayed on the wall.

Inverness, Strathspey and Badenoch Citizen’s Advice Bureau has launched its biggest ever drive to attract new volunteers. The move comes as demands for the service grow with uncertainty over Brexit and the Universal Credit roll-out. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the C.A.B network with 261,900 clients gaining £138 million in 2017/18. The value of volunteer hours nationally is estimated to be in excess of £10 million Candidates should be IT literate with a good basic education for figures and the ability to write letters and fill out forms. The key skills Advisers will be taught are interviewing, using data bases, giving advice, case recording and administration and will also be taught how to problem solve, use their people skills, work in a team and gain confidence speaking to all kinds of people in the course of their work. Successful applicants will be given full training before being asked to see any clients. For Advisers there is the full Adviser Training Programme as well as ongoing training which rewards Advisers with a Generalist Adviser certificate.” Anyone interested should contact Inverness, Badenoch and Strathspey C.A.B on 01463 252294.
