Dear reader, The nights are getting lighter, the first buds are peeping through and we’re tentatively taking off our fleece-lined onesies. Spring is here, and it’s set to be a great one.

As well as our usual mix of great competitions and things to do with all the family in the Merseyside area, we’re looking at the parenting issues that matter to you.

In Bumps and Babies, we explore what support you’re entitled to when it comes to nursery fees, and why more and more pregnant women are likely to be looking into home births in the future. In Education, we look into what you can do if your child doesn’t get into your first choice school and why a tutor could help your child get ahead.

And if you think the time has come to shake off those winter woollies and start getting active, we’ve got plenty of food for thought, as we look into the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign to get more women worrying about their cellulite less, and moving more.

Best wishes, The Family Go Live Team

Ever wondered how you’re going to pay the nursery bill? You’re not alone.A national survey of 1,000 parents of children aged between 0-16, commissioned by 4Children - a national charity for children and families - found that of those parents paying for childcare, almost a fifth of parents (18%) are considering reducing their hours at work or giving up their job altogether because of the financial strain.

More than a quarter (28%) admitted that they would have to cut back on treats in order to pay their childcare costs, while another 16% admitted that they would have to cut back on essentials over the next six months.

Unsurprisingly, almost three quarters (73%) of the parents surveyed, called on political parties to offer them more help with the cost of childcare, with 62% believing it should be an election priority.

Childcare: Are you getting what you’re entitled to? Rachel Prayle, nursery manager at Botanic Lodge nursery, explains what help is available for parents when it comes to childcare…“Many parents don’t realise that all three and four-year-olds in England are eligible to 570

Countingthe cost ofnursery ...

hours of free early education or childcare per year. In practice, this is usually taken as 15 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year. “This help can be used to pay for childcare in a variety of settings. It can be used in nursery schools; nurseries attached to schools; nursery classes’ children’s centres; childminders; Sure Start Children’s Centres and some playgroups and pre-schools.

“It’s also worth remembering that depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for further support. For example, full time students who are eligible for student finance can receive up to £150.23 per week if they have one child under 15, or up to £257.55 if they have two or more children.”

“Parents/carers can have the choice of just using their free entitlement with no extra cost or they can choose to pay a top up if more hours of childcare is needed. Some parents are not aware that the 2, 3 and 4 year old free entitlement can be used in private nurseries and feel that they have to attend the school nursery to guarantee their place in reception at school age. This is not the case and does not jeopardise their school place. I would encourage all parents who are not yet claiming their free entitlement to contact their local nursery for more information.“

Recent guidance published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) suggests that women thought to have a low risk of complications during child birth would be best served by giving birth either in their own home, or in a midwife-led unit.

After reviewing the evidence, it found that the rate of interventions such as the use of forceps or caesarean sections were slightly lower when births took place in the home or midwife-led units, when compared with hospital-based maternity wards.

It suggested that for low-risk first-time mothers, the midwife-led unit may be the best choice. Woman having a second or subsequent child could also consider this, or have a home birth.

NICE has said that the new guidance isn’t about pushing women to have home or midwife-led births if they are reluctant, rather it is about empowering women to choose the way they would like to give birth.

Louise Taylor, Midwife at UK Birth Centres said: “Here at UK Birth centres we are delighted at the recent government recommendations surrounding home birth.

Birth is a normal event for many women and they should be enabled to make choices surrounding the process. As midwives, we know the benefits of giving birth at home. Home birth leads to better outcomes for both mother and baby, lower rates of intervention and a greater sense of well-being and control for women.

Are homebirths

the way forward?

In addition, giving birth at home allows family members to feel part of the experience and adapt better to the changing dynamic of the new family unit.

Hopefully the NICE guidelines will help dispel the myth that giving birth at home is unsafe, when it is in fact the safest place to be for low-risk healthy women and their babies.”

Win! A ten week course of swimming

with Water Babies Liverpool

To enter, visit www.familygolive.com/competitions

Since it was founded in 2002, Water Babies has grown into the world’s largest baby swim school, today teaching more than 41,000 babies.

With the support of over 50 franchisees and around 350 teachers, Water Babies has won more than eight national awards over the last few years, including Best Swimming Class, Best Baby Development Activity, and Best Baby & Toddler Development Activity 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 with What’s On 4 Little Ones.

The lessons develop water safety and confidence. Although the primary aim is having fun – so Water Babies rarely feel like they are in a lesson. However because the course is highly structured, most will happily be swimming distances underwater by about 30 months, then naturally start swimming on the surface as their strength increases.

Family Go Live has a ten-week course of swimming to give away to one lucky reader.

If you’ve got your heart set on a particular infant school for your child, it can be distressing to learn that your application for a place wasn’t successful. However, the good news is that you can still appeal. Here’s our 101 on the process:

When can you appeal? You can still appeal if you feel that: the admission arrangements were not properly followed; you have grounds to believe that the admission criteria was not legal or if you think the decision to refuse your child a place was not reasonable.

What happens next? Once your appeal has been received and processed, the ‘admission authority’ for the school (usually the school itself, or the local council) will set a day for the appeal hearing. Appeals must be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for making an appeal, and parents must be given at least 10 days’ notice before the appeal takes place.

What happens at the appeal hearing? At the appeals hearing, there will be an independent panel made up of three people. The admission authority will explain why your application was turned down, and you will be able to explain why you think your child should be admitted.

If your application for an infant school place was refused on the grounds that the class has already reached its 30-pupil capacity, then the appeal panel can only look at the lawfulness of the admissions arrangements, and whether a mistake was made in not offering the child a place.

If your child was not admitted on grounds other than capacity, the panel will then have to ascertain if the admission criteria were legal, and followed properly. If this is not the case, then your appeal will be upheld. However, if the admissions criteria is deemed to be fair, your child may still be offered a place if your reasons for wanting your child to be admitted outweigh the school’s reasons for not admitting another child. You will receive the panel’s decision in writing within five school days.

What if I’m not successful? Unfortunately, a panel’s decision can only be overturned by a court. You can complain to the Education Funding Agency about the way an appeal was carried out, but you are not entitled to complain about the decision itself. However, if there’s a change in your personal circumstances which could affect the decision (e.g. a house move), then you may have the right to appeal again.

In an ideal world, all it would take to get into a selective secondary school is raw ability and an ability to keep a clear head during the entrance exam. In reality, many parents are seeking just a little extra help to ensure that their children make that all important grade.

New research from the Institute of Education (IOE) showed that many parents are boosting their child’s chance of a place in a grammar school by hiring a private tutor to help give them the edge.

It showed that as many as 7 out of 10 children who

gain a place in grammar school have had some form

of private tutoring to help ensure they performed well

in specific exams.

The researchers found that private tutors are typically

used to help children with entrance exams, such

as verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests as well

as helping children boost their English and Maths

skills. Generally, children had tutors for between one

and three terms, although some children continued

for more than a year. The majority (67%) received

one-to-one tutorials and the remainder were tutored

as part of a small group. However, the IOE found

that 6% continued to have private tutoring in the

first year of secondary school, suggesting that the

main reason children were having this additional

support was simply to get them through their chosen

school’s entrance exams rather than in order to

provide ongoing educational support.

Judith Ireson, currently Emerita Professor of Psychology in Education, IOE said, “One of the key factors is that tuition gives these pupils confidence and helps calm down pre-exam nerves.”

“Parents may see private tutoring as a rational way to help their children perform well in the entrance exams for schools of their choice.”

But she warned that parents should themselves be selective about the tutor they hire, adding: “Parents should be aware that there is no regulation of tutors in this country. They should seek recommendations and check that tutors have relevant qualifications and experience.”

Parent Review

Airborn Academy is well known in the area for it’s varying and energetic activities, not your average sports. There’s everything from freerunning to trampolining, and it’s definitely a hit! We hear from a mum who’s son has grown during his time at their classes.

“My son Elliot, age 12, has been attending Airborn Academy for a year. He’s also been quiet a shy boy, with not an awful lot of confidence – he never really got involved with sports at school etc. But he recently started sessions with Airborn.”

“After just a few weeks at the academy, Elliot is like a new child! You could see that his confidence and skills were growing in every session, and it was great to see!”

“Elliot enjoys the structured ‘taught’ classes that he gets involved in. They are always active in the freerunning classes, so he’s developing all the time. It’s evident that all of the children enjoy it, but safety is still at the forefront at all times.”

“The coaches are fantastic! They’re always there to help with lots of praise and encouragement. Elliot now loves getting to show off his new skills to the other students in the monitored open sessions.”

“He’s now getting over his shyness and growing from strength to strength. I’m so happy he has a place to express himself, as well as socialising and meeting new friends.”

“I would highly recommend Airborn Academy to every parent, and the children are very lucky to have it to go and let off a bit of steam! In the words of Elliot himself, he says the academy is ‘the best place ever’… he loves it!”

It might not be what you first think of when looking for a new hobby for you and your family, but watersports are becoming increasingly popular. Luckily for us in Liverpool, we’ve got the perfect surroundings by the river to get to grips with the activities.

How old do you have to be?You can begin to try the varying aquatic activities as soon as you can swim confidently, but to be on the safe side, most watersports are suited those aged 8 and over.

Do you need special equipment? On photos and videos you see of people taking part in water based activities, they are usually wearing a lot of different apparel. However, all you really need are clothes that you don’t mind getting wet! Ideally, a tracksuit and a pair of trainers or wetsuit boots - most watersports centres usually provide any extras you may need, including helmets and buoyancy aids.

Do you need to have any experience? As long as you can swim a minimum of 25m confidently, there should be no real issues in terms of experience for watersports. There are numerous different classes that are suited to all abilities, including first timers and beginners.

Liverpool has it’s very own watersports centre, with everything from courses, classes, school trips and birthday parties. The centre is a 15 minute walk from the Albert Dock and L1 area, utilising the South Liverpool dockland environment.

These different types of sports are great in terms of working on your physical fitness, as well as getting

the family active and improving health and wellbeing. Who knows, you may be able to see the city skyline from standing up on a paddleboard one day?

Liverpool Watersports Centre is located at Mariners Wharf, Queens Dock. You can find out more information at www.liverpoolwatersports.org.uk.

Take the plunge:

could watersports

be for you?

Justin Fletcher MBE is one of the most recognisable and best-loved faces of children’s television. We caught up with him ahead of CBeebies Live!’s circus-themed extravaganza Justin & Friends: Mr Tumble’s Circus which will be touring arenas across the UK in April 2015…

Justin & Friends: Mr Tumble’s Circus – that sounds like fun! What inspired you to give this tour a circus theme?Well, on the first Justin & Friends show (in 2013) we themed the show around Justin’s House and this time around we wanted Mr Tumble to play a bigger part. So we thought that given that Mr Tumble is a clown, we’d give the new production a circus theme.

Will we be seeing any special circus acts in Mr Tumble’s Circus?Yes, we’re certainly going to have some speciality acts – lots of juggling and balancing as well as a few surprises...

Which of your CBeebies friends will we be meeting on this tour? We’ve got lots of characters from my other shows as well; Robert the Robot will no doubt be following me around trying to tidy up after me; Little Monster will be causing mayhem; from Gigglebiz we’ll have Arthur Sleep and Keith Fitt amongst others. And let’s not forget the Tumble family! I believe Aunt Polly will also be making an appearance. All in all, a huge array of CBeebies favourites.

RestaurantReview

We’d heard great things about the newly opened O’Connors Bar and Grill at the Sefton Park Hotel, and were really looking forward to see what the fuss was all about! I visited on a Friday night with a relative for some meaty delights, and we weren’t disappointed.

The building actually overlooks the park, with the best of both worlds in terms of dining out. There’s a warm and welcoming atmosphere as soon as you walk in, with a cosy bar on the right, and the chilled restaurant on the left - an ideal setting for a special occasion. We were welcomed by our friendly host, and shown to our table to peruse the menu. First, we opted for the nachos to share, topped with guacamole, salsa, sour cream, and melted cheese. There was definitely enough for two people…we couldn’t even finish them as we wanted to save room for rest of our meal!

For our mains, I chose the lamp rump, which came with fondant potato, glazed veg and mint jus. It was delicious! The meat was cooked to perfection, and the whole dish was very tasty! My sister chose the chicken and BBQ ribs, which was served with crispy french fries and sauces. As you can imagine, it was a little messy, but she definitely enjoyed it! We were so full that we couldn’t quite manage a dessert each, so we opted for the chocolate brownie to share. This was accompanied with salted caramel ice cream, and fresh raspberries, which complimented each other perfectly.

Overall, we loved the experience of a night out at O’Connor’s. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive, the food was delicious, and the setting was calm, candlelit and chilled. Relatives of ours have

also visited before, and the staff were so helpful in terms of trying to accommodate allergies like coeliac disease, which can be difficult sometimes when trying to find a place to eat.

We’d definitely return in future to the restaurant – it was good value for money, which you’ll appreciate even more when you tuck into the fabulous food, and there’s something for everyone. You could even extend your visit into a short stay, as there are a range of cosy hotel rooms too!

There will be an abundance of treats on offer in the street food, restaurant and producer areas across the field. Visitors can eat, drink and shop their way around the themed zones which include street food, deli delights, a heavenly chocolate garden, sweet and treats, cafe corner, children’s zone and a kitchenware area.

Denise Harris, Director at SK Events and PR, said: “We have hand-picked our producers and carefully planned each and every activity at our spring festival to guarantee visitors an exciting and fun-filled Easter day out for the entire family.”

Along with the activities, food, drink and shopping at Liverpool Food and Drink Spring Festival, visitors can also enjoy live music, performances and themed demonstrations over the two days.

WINAfternoon Tea,Delivered To Your Door!

Sometimes, a mug of tea and a biscuit just won’t cut it. Traditional tea is something us English are proud of, which is why a lot of us want to add that little touch of class!

The concept of afternoon tea came about around 1840 when the 7th Duchess of Bedford complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late Afternoon. Amazed by the boost a pot of tea and sandwiches gave her, she then started sharing the idea with all of her friends, and the idea spread like wildfire in well-to-do circles. We found out more about one company in Liverpool, who is dedicated to bringing some traditional tea parties to your special occasions…

The Handy Afternoon Tea Company is run by Andrew Gray and Hannah Carroll. They spotted a gap in the market for this afternoon tea concept while Andy was working at Panoramic 34 and saw the popularity of afternoon tea grow considerably.

The premise of the business is simple; providing a high quality, professional homemade afternoon tea, delivered straight to your door and served in the finest British China. This enables you and your guests to enjoy this quintessential British tradition, in the comfort of your chosen location.

They offer a range of packages; Silver at £9 per head, including freshly baked scones, unlimited loose leaf tea and a range of sandwiches, to the Platinum package, which at £15 per head, also offers sharing cakes such as traditional Victoria sponge or lemon drizzle; homemade pastries and fancies – tailored to whatever occasion you’re hosting!

Packing up? FreshStart? Top tips fora big house move

If you’ve ever moved house, the day will probably live long in the memory as one of the most hectic! You might be packing up and moving continents, or just upsizing to around the corner, but it pays to be organised…

Be ruthless in what you take Imagine you’ve got a bag allowance like when you go on a flight; you don’t want your new home to be cluttered as soon as you move in. Be decisive and use the occasion as an excuse to throw away what you realistically won’t need in the future.

Make up your beds firstIt may not sound like the first priority when moving into a new home, but after a long day of carrying boxes and settling in, you’ll be glad when you don’t have to find those bed sheets you packed hours ago! If you want to be extra organised, make you sure know where cutlery and plates are for later in the day… that’s if you aren’t going for the pizza takeaway option!

Get planning! No more staring at that wallpaper you never really liked - a new home means a blank canvas. Start thinking about what you could do with your kitchen or living room before moving furniture in. You may want to try a new colour scheme…get creative!

It’s nicer to neuter

Quick Tips

Neutering isn’t just a way of preventing your pet’s amorous attentions being directed at Aunt Mabel’s legs, or a way of ensuring you don’t have a host of hopeful canine suitors queuing up outside your door when Fluffy is in heat - it’s also one of the best things you can do for your pet’s health and wellbeing. Penny Lott, Clinic Director from White Cross Vets in Gateacre tells us more:

“Unless you’re serious about using a pet for breeding purposes, the advantages of having your pet spayed far outweigh the disadvantages.

A spayed pet has fewer medical problems, lives longer on average, does not add to the pet overpopulation and I feel makes them a better member of the family.

“For example, neutered male dogs are less likely to try to escape from the home, meaning they’re less likely to go missing or get hit by a car. They’re also much less likely to either be aggressive to other dogs, or be the target of aggression from other dogs. And as if that’s not enough, it also seriously reduced the risk of prostate disease and some cancers.”

It’s not just male dogs who can benefit from neutering. Penny continues: “It’s not commonly known, but female dogs are also at risk of breast cancer. Spaying a female can greatly reduce this risk. It can also reduce the chance of them getting an infection of the womb called pyometra, something that can be fatal in older dogs. And of course, pregnancy and birth is risky to mums in any species.”

And there’s no need to worry about how your pet will cope with the procedure, says Penny. She explains: “Pets receive a full nose to tail health check beforehand to make sure they’re in tip top condition to start with.

The routine procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and pets are well enough to go home the same day with pain relief. Pets heal quickly so whilst we recommend restricting their physical activity, such as jumping, for a few days they will soon be back to their normal self.”

But for Penny, the biggest benefit of neutering is not for the individual dog but for ‘dogkind’. She adds: “Put simply, the UK just has too many unwanted dogs. Our rescue centres are full to the brim, in many cases they rely on the generosity of volunteers who struggle to cope with the vast number of abandoned cats and dogs. Neutering your pet will make sure you aren’t personally contributing to this problem.”

She concludes “If you are unsure I recommend you phone your local vets and book a free pre-neuter consultation, they’ll talk you through the pros and cons and answer any questions you may have.”

Sometimes feel like your dog is taking you for a walk when it should be the other way around? Here are some quick tips on mastering the daily dog walk:

1.Take the lead – You are the “pack leader”, so you therefore control your dog. It’s also safer when approaching busy roads.

2. Try a different route – Dogs often like to be out in the country, so a trail or path that is well off the road could be perfect for some fresh air.

3. Provide a reward – They’re going to be hungry after burning all of that energy! A nice treat could be given to round off a settled routine.

Time to get

bendy and ache

free: Introducing

Pilates

So you want to get fit, toned and flexible, or shrug off those aches and pains? Need help with recovering from injuries or just coping with wear and tear? Well doesn’t everybody?! You’ve probably heard of Pilates, but are not exactly sure what it is. Well, it can be a big help with all of the above problems and many more besides. Pilates is more than just another exercise routine and is really versatile, with something for everybody. So read on if you’re interested in discovering more about something a bit different from the usual aerobics, spinning or gym class.

Kate from 4Most Fitness, based in Christopher Close, Childwall gives us the lowdown on why we should all be getting out our stretchy pants and preparing to get seriously bendy.

“Pilates can be super-soft, gentle and relaxing or it can also be a hardcore mega sweaty stamina workout! It’s a great way to target specific areas of the body and the apparatus is used to enhance muscle performance giving you faster fitness results. This means that even though a Pilates class may look fairly relaxed to the untrained eye, it actually provides quite a workout!

“If you’re quite physically weak, it can help you build strength. If you’re already strong, it can challenge you and help you get to the peak of physical fitness. It’s also a great form of exercise for expectant mums and can help speed recovery after childbirth.

“Pilates uses mat based exercises and equipment such as the reformer, chair and cadillac to develop muscular strength and flexibility. It can help correct poor posture and develop muscular strength without becoming too bulky or putting undue strain on your

joints. Pilates also helps develop good breathing techniques, and because it gives the abdominal muscles a good workout, it can be a great way to tackle the dreaded ‘jelly belly’.

“Whether you have a specific training goal in mind, or just want to improve your overall physical fitness and do something that’s just ‘for you’, Pilates can help!”

Kate offers Pilates instruction for all from her studio in Liverpool. Small group and 1:1 Pilates Matwork and Pilates Reformer, Cadillac and Chair classes are available 5-days a week.

Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign has been making waves recently. Launched with the aim of getting more women and girls active whatever their age, shape or ability, the advert features real women - cellulite and all - getting stuck in the various types of exercise.

The campaign was launched after research by Sport England revealed that fewer women than men play sport regularly – two million fewer 14-40 year olds in total. Despite this, 75% say they want to be more active.

Further research into what’s stopping women turning their ambitions into reality found that a fear of judgement. The campaign aims to help women to shed these inhibitions, empower women, and encourage them to get more active.

This girl can.

Can you?

Sport England CEO Jennie Price, said: “Before we began this campaign, we looked very carefully at what women were saying about why they felt sport and exercise was not for them. Some of the issues, like time and cost, were familiar, but one of the strongest themes was a fear of judgement.

“Every single woman I have talked to about this campaign – and that is now hundreds – has identified with this, and it is that fear of not being ‘good enough’ in some way, and the fear that you are the only one who feels like that, that we want to address.”

PartyTestimonial

Rock-climbing is on the up! And even though there are plenty of options in terms of clubs and classes, you can also hold a kids birthday party. We spoke to a few parents who recently held a party at Awesome Walls Climbing Centre… let’s see what the verdict was!

“We chose this venue because we wanted something different to the usual play centres. We invited 8 children aged 6-8years and they all had amazing fun. We had an hour climbing; starting with the smaller walls and working up to the bigger ones. All of the children gained confidence and it was lovely to hear them all cheering each other on. We then went into the party room upstairs which was great! We brought our own balloons and party food. The staff were amazing with the kids and I’d thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking of having a party there!” Stacey

“Set in a old church , I took my children for a birthday treat and they loved it ! It’s not the first time they have been, but they had a two hour childrens package and they had a great time.

The instructors made it more than just climbing, with other things to do whilst climbing to make it more interesting, fun and exciting for them.

They loved it, ate well afterwards and of course, slept like logs that night! I would recommend it.Staff are really good too, easy to find and free parking!” Tony

“We took my six year old daughter and a friend to Awesome Walls in Liverpool for a birthday afternoon climbing. They gave us a good safety briefing to begin with, to explain how to do it, and then we had a great afternoon climbing. Bella loved it, and my wife and I both had a good time too. I will definitely be going back!” Alex

Parties with a

difference: How about

a bit of team building?

We all look forward to a good old traditional party, and is usually what parents first think of when organising their child’s birthday. However, you can go that bit more adventurous in terms of what activity you can base your party around.

Of course, the majority of kids are always excited to get out and about: this especially includes outdoor sports and adventure activities, or a team building task to get your brains into gear! We spoke to Joe of Littlefoot team building, about why a puzzling party could be perfect for your child’s next birthday. He explains:

“Last year we started to develop a range of fun and completely different kids parties based on my team building expertise and bushcraft knowledge and skills. So now we offer exciting “themed” puzzle

parties, where the kids aged 6+ take part in loads of fun activities in order to win keys in the hope of opening the heavily padlocked treasure box.”

But if you wanted something a bit more traditionally sporty, you can try football… with a twist! Cheshire Zorbs host parties for kids (and adults!) where you play in a bubble body casing – guaranteed lots of bumps and laughter, and you’ll definitely be tired out afterwards!

Activities such as these can be designed to whatever occasion you’re hosting. So whether that be a kids’ birthday party or a team building exercise, it’s something that bit different for you to try out!
