MOVING DAY

Early Drop-OffFor the first time at UD, we are offering new students the opportunity to drop off their belongings before orientation begins! For one hour, families can carry things up to the student’s new room with limited competition for elevators and stairwells. When the hour is through, families can head home knowing that students’ things are waiting for them when they officially move in August 16.

Dropping off belongings early makes move-in day less stressful and allows more time to enjoy New Student Orientation. Families will be able to move in any additional items, pick up the student’s notebook computer and FlyerCard, and attend important orientation sessions.

Early drop-off timeslots are available on August 9, 10 or 11 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. To register for your early drop-off time, visit housing.udayton.edu/earlydropoff/ between July 1 and August 1. Early drop-off times must be prearranged through this web site, are strictly limited to an hour and allow families only to drop off belongings.

Make move-in as easy as possible by starting early — register for early drop-off today!

Questions? E-mail Residential Services at [email protected].

Move-In ProcessWhen nearing the University of Dayton on Brown Street, you will see signs directing all traffic south on Brown Street past the main entrance at College Park. Continue driving south on Brown Street.

Marianist Hall and Founders Hall residents

Turn left (east) at Kiefaber Street. Proceed down Kiefaber and when it T-bones into Evanston Avenue, you will see more signs and uniformed move-in staff directing you left (north) down Evanston Avenue to C Lot.

Stuart Complex and Marycrest Complex residents

Continue on Brown Street past Kiefaber Street to Irving Avenue. Turn left (east) onto Irving Avenue. Proceed up Irving Avenue and turn left onto Hilltop Road, a service road that runs along the edge of campus. Uniformed move-in staff will direct Stuart residents up the hill to SV and SR Lots. All Marycrest residents will be directed left into G and S2 Lots.

Our move-in staff and Blue Crew team members will greet you under tents erected in S2, SV and C Lots. These tents will serve as “holding stations” for your luggage and boxes, and our move-in staff and Blue Crew will help you carry your things to your room.

Parking & Shuttle BusCars may ONLY UNLOAD in the lots being used for move-in.

Once you have unloaded your belongings, you will be asked to move to the College Park Center (CPC) parking lot on the southwest corner of Brown and Stewart Streets. A shuttle will be available to take you back to campus, beginning at 6:30 a.m. and ending at 1:30 p.m. There will be four stops on the route: (1) the CPC parking lot, (2) behind Marycrest Complex, (3) behind Stuart Complex and (4) at the intersection of Evanston Avenue, Kiefaber Street and Stonemill Road.

Questions on Moving DayIf you have questions about getting to campus or moving in on move-in day (August 16), call the New Student Orientation Information Center at 937-229-2229.

Moving can be a lot of work — packing, loading the truck or van, unloading the truck or van, carrying boxes up and down stairs, unpacking. You get the picture.

We want your move to campus on Saturday, August 16, to be as smooth as possible. The move-in process will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 11 a.m.

Welcome to the Families of the University of Dayton’s Incoming Class of 2008!

It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you and your student to the University of Dayton. As you look forward to participating in New Student Orientation, you are undoubtedly filled with excitement and anticipation over what will be the beginning of a new chapter in your life and that of your son or daughter. Your student and his or her classmates are an important new thread in our Catholic and Marianist tapestry. As our new students begin this chapter, they will become connected to many experiences, life lessons and friends they will treasure for a lifetime.

We have high expectations of your student, and I encourage you to challenge your young adult to meet these expectations with great care and attention to personal responsibility for his or her own rigorous learning, social and cultural immersion and service to others. Most importantly, your student and fellow classmates will grow spiritually in ways that will help them to be as concerned about themselves as you are. That is the power of a Catholic, Marianist education.

Keep in mind that you and your student are UD. Your student will become a reflection of what others hear, see and know about our University. The UD experience will last for a lifetime, and undoubtedly, we will become a better University and community because we know our students make a difference in the world. We ask all of our students to make the most of their time and talents and to embrace many learning, service and leadership opportunities so that they are prepared for their future. This incoming class is very fortunate to be a part of the University community during a time of growth and change on our campus. The experiences that they will encounter likely will be different from those who are already here or have graduated. They will learn very quickly that the classroom extends to the world beyond campus and will know what it means to be an important part of an academic community of excellence, service and success.

After all, that’s what a University of Dayton education truly means.

Daniel J. Curran, Ph.D. President

Dr. Daniel J. Curran

Welcome 1

Page 10: FAMILY GuIdebook University of Dayton

Welcome New UD Families!

On behalf of all of us at the University of Dayton, welcome to our campus community and Marianist family! We are delighted that your students will be here with us and grateful that you have entrusted them to our care.

Thirteen student leaders have dedicated many months to planning our New Student Orientation program that will introduce you to all that we love about UD. You and your son or daughter will experience firsthand our students’ excitement about engaging deeply in life within and outside of the classroom, discovering new things and their own sense of passionate purpose, and belonging to a community where all are valued. Orientation will prepare your student to become a full member in our vibrant campus community and to make the most of the UD experience.

We have designed New Student Orientation to be a family affair. We welcome your participation in events on Saturday and Sunday morning, several of which are especially for parents and families (see the schedule on page 4 for details). When you depart on Sunday afternoon, take comfort in the fact that you leave your student in the care of his or her new UD family — a group led by three upperclass students, a faculty member and a staff person committed to shepherding your son or daughter through the first days on campus.

We believe that New Student Orientation will truly be a formative experience for your student. May God bless your family as you join the UD community!

Annette Schmeling, RSCJ Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students

Sister Annette Schmeling, RSCJ

2 Welcome

Page 11: FAMILY GuIdebook University of Dayton

Welcome to the University of Dayton and the UD family!

As a Catholic, Marianist institution, we place enormous emphasis on community within our University. This community not only includes all the students, faculty and staff, but also the families of each student. As family orientation executive, it is my goal to make this weekend of transition pleasant not only for first-year students, but their families as well.

The involvement of families at UD extends beyond orientation weekend. Families are truly essential because it is with your support that your student is given the opportunity to be part of the UD community. You play an integral role in your student’s life, and we hope that you encourage him or her to get involved in this new adventure. Urge your student to learn about and explore this new collegiate environment, as well as get involved on campus.

Your family is welcome to visit campus all year long. We welcome the company, and students love

visits from friends and family. The students, faculty and staff want to show our appreciation for all families through events like Family Weekend, which will take place October 24-26. The entire orientation team and UD community are excited to meet you, and we are all willing to do whatever we can to make your transition easier! If you still have questions after reading through this guidebook, please feel free to contact the appropriate campus department.

Again, welcome to the University of Dayton family! We can’t wait to meet you!

TRANSITIONING TO COLLEGE

The transition from high school to college will be a big one not only for your son or daughter, but also for you as a parent. You’ve put a lot of time, effort and love into raising your student, and the time has come for him or her to practice all your life lessons!

Your son or daughter’s college experience will be full of opportunities for growth and development. We want to help prepare you with some information about your student’s important transition to living a new, more independent life as a college student. Learning to navigate this transition may take some practice from both of you, but together, you can have a wonderful first-year experience.

Confidentiality PoliciesBecause it is our goal to create responsible members of society, the University abides by confidentiality policies and laws for students over the age of 18. If your son or daughter visits the Health or Counseling Centers, he or she must give permission before we are able to release any information to you, unless the student is in a life threatening situation. In regard to academic and disciplinary information, you must also have your student’s permission before faculty and staff are able to release information to you. For more details about confidentiality, please contact the Health Center, the Counseling Center or the academic dean’s office of your student’s program.

Nondiscrimination PolicyThe University of Dayton does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, creed, national or ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation, or against otherwise qualified handicapped students in its admissions policies and academic and other standards, nor in the granting of scholarships, loans and other financial aid, nor in the planning and administration of any of its academic, athletic and other programs, services and activities.

What Do We Do If…Part of the college transition is learning how to address issues and difficulties that may arise. We encourage you to have honest and open conversations with your son or daughter about the challenges of college life. If speaking with your student does not bring complete resolution, here are some campus resources for common issues.

Academic IssuesIf your son or daughter is experiencing difficulty with classes, professors or grades, encourage him or her to speak first with the professor. If your student is not satisfied with the outcome, he or she may make an appointment to speak with the department chair. Classroom support services are also available through Student Learning Support (937-229-2066).

Alcohol Policy ViolationsThe Standards of Behavior regarding alcohol violations in most cases mimic state law. No student under the age of 21 is permitted to purchase, consume, possess or distribute alcoholic beverages. Persons of legal drinking age (21+) are not permitted to consume alcoholic beverages in a public place or to provide alcohol to those who are underage. In an effort to provide an appropriate academic environment, the University does not permit displays of alcohol containers, the use or possession of kegs, the distribution of alcohol in mass quantities and/or overuse or abuse of alcohol. Any violation of laws/statutes regarding alcohol and/or violation of the other University policies will initiate the judicial process. Lastly, alcohol abuse is taken seriously by the University and may result in professional alcohol dependency counseling at the students expense and in some cases suspension from the University.

Behavioral IssuesThe University of Dayton’s Student Standards of Behavior have been developed to support the Catholic and Marianist philosophy of community living. Students are expected to read and adhere to these standards as well as all city, state and federal laws. If a student is documented for a

8 Transitioning to College

Page 17: FAMILY GuIdebook University of Dayton

violation of a policy and/or law, the student judicial process is initiated. Students are afforded an opportunity to provide mitigation and testimony concerning allegations of misconduct that violate the Standards of Behavior. In accordance with the Family Education Right to Privacy Act (FERPA), parents are not notified of disciplinary action unless deemed necessary by the Dean of Students. FERPA also restricts information sharing with parents about students, so it is important that parents keep an open line of communication with their students to be informed about possible violations. Students found responsible for a policy violation will be issued sanctions and are held accountable for completing those sanctions by the assigned due dates. The Student Standards of Behavior are reviewed and adapted prior to the beginning of each academic year and are posted online at www.udayton.edu/~commstds/.

Health ConcernsThe Health Center (937-229-3131) is available to provide outpatient care to students. All students enrolled at UD may use the Health Center, and both male and female physicians are available.

Making the Transition to College LivingIt is important to remember that your son or daughter will be adjusting to a whole new way of living this year. Your student will live on a floor with people he or she has probably never met before, face new academic challenges and learn the art of managing time with limited adult supervision. For students having difficulty making the transition, the Counseling Center (937-229-3141) is a valuable resource. The Counseling Center helps students to discover goals, handle new relationships, deal with test anxiety and select a major. Individual and group counseling is available.

Spirituality and ReligionWith the transition to college, some students will question the faith traditions in which they were raised, while other students just want to learn more about their religion. UD’s Campus Ministry (937-229-3339) program provides support and opportunities to people of all faiths, as well as service opportunities.

Family EmergenciesWe realize that there may be emergencies, such as a family death or injury, which require parents to get in immediate contact with their sons or daughters. We ask parents to first attempt to contact the student directly. If you are unable to reach your student, or believe it would be best for someone from the University to talk to your student because of the nature of the situation, please follow these suggestions.

For students living in a residence hall, (Campus South, Founders, Lawnview Apartments, Marianist, Marycrest, Stuart or Virginia W. Kettering), contact the front desk of the hall. You may ask to consult with a member of the Residence Education or Campus Ministry staff to determine the best process for contacting your son or daughter.

Residence Hall NumbersCampus South: 937-229-3539 Founders Hall: 937-229-4611 Lawnview Apartments: 937-229-3665 Marianist Hall: 937-229-1627 Marycrest Complex: 937-229-3124 Stuart Complex: 937-229-4621 Virginia W. Kettering Suites: 937-229-4563

If your son or daughter does not live in a residence hall, contact Public Safety (937-229-2121) and explain the reason for contacting the officer. Public Safety will then help you to determine the appropriate action that needs to be taken to reach your son or daughter.

In the event that the student must leave campus quickly due to the emergency and will be absent from classes, you or your student are asked to contact the student’s academic dean’s office. (Phone numbers are available on page 17). You can then ask the dean’s office to contact the appropriate faculty members. Students should also contact their resident assistant or a residence hall staff person to inform them of emergency absences.

ACADEMICS

For all students on campus, professors serve as a valuable resource for academics and extracurricular activities. A new beginning at college is sure to bring academic challenges. Questions about homework assignments, group projects, exams and other issues are always best resolved with a discussion between the student and professor.

Every first-year student is assigned an adviser, usually a faculty member in his or her major field. The student will keep the same adviser throughout the completion of his or her college career. Advisers help students to determine course schedules, as well as academic plans leading to graduation. Advisers also help their students find internships and offer professional advice for future careers. It is essential for the student to be an informed and active part of the advising process, and students often benefit from meeting with their adviser on a regular basis, not just when it’s time to schedule classes for next term.

The Office of the Dean is another important resource for students and their families. Each academic school and college within UD has its own dean’s office to address various issues that arise.
