Ninth Generation

Lavallee, also changed to Lavelle and LaValle, was a huge family from the province of Quebec, primarily St-Pierre-De-Sorel, Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. During the mid-1850s, several of the sons relocated to Hennepin County in Michigan amongst neighbors also previously from Quebec Province. Many of them married neighbors from adjacent properties. Lavallee Jr., Pierre (Peter) LaValle and William Joseph LaVelle all owned large parcels surrounding French Lake. The relationship of half brothers Peter and Daniel Lewis to William has not been substantiated.

There was a large population of Lavallees in Massachusetts also. Being that Boston is directly south of Quebec by approximately 400 miles, the abundance of jobs drew many French Canadians to the United States. French Canada was

slow to adopt the industrial revolution which caused a migration from there to the US..

20. Marie Lavallee Proulx (daughter of Daniel Lavallee, Joseph Lavallee, Pierre Lavallee, Pierre Lavallee, Therese Lavallee, Jean Lavallee, Jean Lavallee, Geoffroy Guillot, Jean Guillot) was born on 21 Sep 1825 in St-Pierre-de-Sorel , Richelieu, Quebec. She died in 1914 and was buried with her husband and son Napoleon.

Marie married Joseph Proulx, son of Nicolas Proulx and Marie Desautels, on 4 Aug 1840 in St-Ours, Québec . Joseph was born in 1817. He died in 1886 and was buried with his wife.

21 Daniel Louis Lavallee Jr. (son of Daniel Lavallee, Joseph Lavallee, Pierre Lavallee, Pierre Lavallee, Therese Lavallee, Jean Lavallee, Jean Lavallee, Geoffroy Guillot, Jean Guillot) was born on 15 Dec 1827 in St Pierre-De-Sorel, Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. In 1850, he is working as a carpenter and living with the Baudreau family. By 1857, they are living in Minnesota in an area concentrated with French Canadians. He owned land valued at $1325 in 1860. By 1870, his estate had expanded and was valued at $2825. In 1873, of the area showed that he owned an adjacent parcel with LaClair, from the same


Quebec city, and the father-in-law of his daughter Virginia. By his death, he owned both parcels. He died on 12 Dec 1897 in Osseo, Hennepin, Minnesota. He was buried in Dec 1897 in St Vincent de Paul Cemetery Osseo Minn.

Daniel married Basilisse Elizabeth Baudreau, daughter of Joseph B Baudreau and Josephte Fortier, on 14 Apr 1849 in St Peters & Pauls Cathedral, St. Paul, Ramsey Co, Minnesota Territory. Basilisse was born on 17 Oct 1831 in Sorrel, Quebec Canada. She died on 9 Jun 1920 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was buried in St Mary's Cemetery Minneapolis Minn. They had 12 natural daughters and adopted a 13th daughter, a cousin whose biological mother had died.

Mary Dorenkamper, age 95, died Sunday at the Good Samaritan Center in Kelliher. Mrs. Dorenkamper was born November 12, 1883 at French Lake. She was married to Fred Dorenkamper on October 1, 1906 at Anoka. They lived in that area until 1913 when they came to the Kelliher area, homesteading three miles north of Kelliher. She was active in St. Patrick's Church Guild and Christian Mothers Society. She served as a mid-wife when needed. Survivors include one son, Lester, at Altamante Springs, Fla., three daughters, Rita Lundin and Pearl Schmidt at Kelliher and Adelaide Johnson at Hoyt Lakes. In 1945 they moved to Kelliher where he operated Fred's Shoe Store until 3 years ago.He served on the Town Board and the School Board for several years and was an active member in the Farmer's Club.Surviving relatives are his wife, 3 daughters, Mrs. Pearl Heyer of Cambridge, Mrs. Hilmer Johnson and Mrs. Louis Lundin of Kelliher, and 2 sons, Raymond and Lester of kelliher, and 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The opening of the 1940 population census gives us a window onto life in the United States during the Great Depression and the years immediately before involvement in World War II. Natural disasters compounded economic hardships as drought and wind created a "Dust Bowl" in the center of the country. This was a decade of great change for the country, and the questions asked on the census allow the people themselves to tell us about the social and economic issues they faced. The 16th decennial census of population began on April 1, 1940. The average income was $1,368, and the average unemployment rate in the 1930s was 18.26 percent, up from the average of 5.2 percent in the 1920s. Earlier censuses primarily measured the expansion of the country quantitatively in population, territory, and resources, but for the 1940 census, officials felt that they should gather information that would throw light on the internal social and economic problems facing the nation. All persons 14 years old and over at the time of the census, except inmates of certain institutions, were asked to report the number of weeks they worked in 1939 for pay or profit.

In the United States, the level of education of the adult population has increased steadily since the middle of the 20th century. The average education in 1940 was 8th grade. The population, 25 years and over, who attended college was 10% in 1940 and only 4.6% graduated from college. 60% of the population in this age group with only elementary education or no formal schooling was 60% in 1940 and 13.5% of this population had only zero to four years of elementary education.

Many families in the hard-hit "Dust Bowl"—covering parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and the Texas Panhandle—were forced to abandon the land and join the ranks of migrant workers toiling for low wages on distant commercial farms. The migrant flow out of the region included people from cities and small towns and farmers who had been replaced by motorized farm machinery.

Joseph worked as a newspaperman in Revere, Massachusetts, Minneapolis and Milwaukee. In about 1917, the story goes, Joe placed his 3 sons in a boarding school in Fletcher, Mn (Fletcher is NW of Minneapolis and near French Lake) when the boys were left without a mother. Margaret Follon, from near Boston, returned there after finding some money in Joe's pocket, leaving him to raise 3 small boys. The school was not an official orphanage, but the nuns were of the order of St. Francis. In order to keep the school running, they would take in children from the area that would remain their during the week. The parents would pick the children up by horse and buggy on Friday. The 3 Jolly boys stayed there all week. Sister Phillipe was the Mother Superior the only mother the boys had ever known. The boys were there 7 or 8 years and had great affection for the school. Once Joe remarried, he took the boys and moved them to Milwaukee. He had been a pressman for the Minneapolis newspaper. When he moved to West Allis, he worked for the paper in that area. The priests at the school were Oblate order of Immaculate Mary Missionaries. The boys were well known through out the community of Fletcher because they were raised by the nuns at the school. They were altar boys and were kept busy with gardening and chores. They sang in the choir. Fr. Gelsdorf, Vogel, & Russell were the priests at the time, very strict and traditional. At the school, the girls had a dorm and the boys had a dorm, upstairs. The Jolly boys were the last ones to leave the school as a boarding school. He died on 23 Jun 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was buried on 28 Jun 1944 in Holy Apostles Cemetery, New Berlin, Wisconsin.

She worked several years at the Kelliher Shopping Center and then worked for the Kelliher Care Center for 17 years. She is survived by three sons, Delbert and James, both of Kelliher, and Curtis of Hibbing; one daughter, Mary (Mrs. Tim) Poxleitner of Kelliher; one brother, Lester Dorenkamper of Chiefland, Fla.; two sisters, Adeline Johnson of Hoyt Lakes and Pearl Schmidt of Kelliher; 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 13, 1975.

She married Edward Heyer in Grand Forks, N.D., and lived in Saginaw, Mich. He died in 1941. Later, she married Clifford Schmidt and they made their home in Kelliher. They entered the Kelliher Care Center in 1993. He died on Dec. 15, 2001. She was a member of the Kelliher American Legion Auxiliary. Otto Heyer, 40, a nephew of August Lapp and son-in-law of the Fred Dorenkampers, died on Tuesday at the Northern Pacific hospital in St. Paul after an illness of less than a week. His death was attributed to an unsuspected chronic heart ailment complicated by an acute attack of influenza. The deceased was taken to the hospital on Sunday after being ill since last Thursday at his home in Funkley. Otto Heyer was born in Thuringia, Germany, September 7, 1903, and migrated to this country in November, 1924. He resided with his uncle for nearly ten years before moving to Saginaw, Mich., where he was employed until early this spring. Survivors are his widow, the former Pearl Dorenkamper, and their two daughters, Delphine 13, and Henrietta 11, and his uncle August Lapp. Several brothers and sisters and possibly his father may still reside in Germany. Funeral services are tentatively arranged for this afternoon at Our Savior's Lutheran church here.

She also worked at the Taconite Haven and Hoyt Lakes Golf Course. Addie was also a homemaker. Addie was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, its Assumption Group and Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Hoyt Lakes Senior Citizens and Hoyt Lakes Bowling Leagues. In 1940, he was living with his maternal Aunt Marie Raiche and worked as an accountant for a retails auto parts company in Minneapolis. He served in the US Army during WWII. He died on 19 Dec 2002 in Sequim, Clallam, Washington. He was buried in Mount Angeles Memorial Park Cemetery, Port Angeles, WA.

The Marceaus made their home in Los Angeles until they relocated to Sequim in 1969. She enjoyed physical activity and, in addition to receiving a lifetime achievement award from Master Gardeners, was an Over-the-Hill hiker and, for a number of years, a nine-hole golfer. When Mrs. Marceau first came to the Peninsula, she served as secretary of the Audubon Society. She was also a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Her husband died Dec. 19, 2005. Survivors include sons, Phillip E. Marceau of Vancouver, Wash., and Rene M. Marceau of Seattle; daughter, Yvette Marceau Harper of Los Angeles; sisters, Odilia DeGrood Rauf of St. Cloud, Minn., and Genevieve DeGrood Gorciak of Torrance, Calif.; and six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services: Monday, Nov. 19, at 9 a.m., funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. Graveside committal in Sequim View Cemetery will follow the Mass.

Her mother remarried and her family moved to West Allis where her sister Margie was born. Eleanor graduated from West Allis High School in 1933. On her 21st birthday she married Alfred R. Jolly. Eleanore and Alfred moved to Greendale in 1939 where they raised two sons, Warner and Gary. In 1949, while her husband was a pressman at the Milwaukee Journal, Eleanor began her long and proud life as a Shetland Sheepdog lover, owner and breeder and founded Thistlerose Kennels which she operated for 50 years. A true pioneer business woman, her passion and enthusiasm eventually led her to become one the country's most successful and respected sheltie breeders with over 50 champions to her credit. Eleanor managed to grab all life had to offer and her feisty spirit will be deeply missed. Eleanor is survived by and will be missed by her grandchildren, Suzanne (Bret) Jenkin, Deborah O'Hara, Jeffrey Jolly, Chris (Diana) Jolly, Stacy (Paul) Kania, Yvonne (Dan) Hanson, and Dana (Dave) Jolly. She is also survived and will be missed by nine great - grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a host of friends and relatives. She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Stewart of Johnson City, TN; a son, Dennis Current of Fargo, N.D.; 6 grandchildren; a sister, Henrietta (Jim) Parker of Florida and several nieces and nephews.
