OCTOBER 2013 Family matters It’s National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week We kicked off National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week with a bang at the Sweet & Savory: Battle Against Hunger on Monday night. Thank you to all who came to support our event—it was a great night! Photographer Christopher Brown of Shoot From Within Photography presented his exhibit, Perseverance with Dignity. We also watched the premiere of the short documentary of the same name featuring some of the individuals portrayed here. It was refreshing to hear from Tiffany, Nick, and James at the panel discus- sion following the film. But the highlight of the night, at least for us foodies, was the culinary competition for best appetizer and best dessert. Thank you to all the students who participated. It was a delicious treat! The winner of “best appetizer” as chosen by attendees were the Hawaiian meatballs made by Colleen Hill and Amber Fussell of Richard Stockton College. The winner of “best dessert” as chosen by attendees was the pumpkin Blondie with white chocolate mousse made by Alexandra Zeitz of Drexel University. This dish also won the chef’s choice as determined by local celebrity chef Scott Schroeder of The South Philly Tap Room and American Sardine Bar. Special thanks to Do Good Brewing, Majestic Wines and Whole Foods Market for sponsoring the event and providing the beverages. And a big thanks to International House Philadelphia for providing the venue. See you next year, folks! November 2014

Making a turkey? Get your trimmings at Whole Foods Market and support Bethesda Project!

It’s that time of year when families gather for holiday meals and big celebra-

tions. Get your holiday meal supplies at Whole Foods Market’s South Street or

Callowhill stores and support Bethesda Project when you bring in your own

bags. Through the Nickels for NonProfits program, customers are invited to do-

nate their five cent reusable bag refund to Bethesda Project!

In addition, customers can purchase a $10 bag of food to donate to our shelters

through the Feed 4 More program. All proceeds will aid Bethesda Project to

continue its mission to find and care for the abandoned poor and to be family

with those who have none.

“With nearly 50 million Americans living in food insecure households, Whole

Foods Market is inviting our customers to help us fill the cupboards of families

right here in Philadelphia,” said Kerry Shepski, Marketing Team Leader at Whole Foods Market South Street.

Both programs will run through December.

FROM THE OFFICE OF COMMUNITY LIFE

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,

and he looks just like YOU!

If you listen closely, you can hear Santa’s sleigh bells in the not too distant future. Those bells are

sounding very loud to Bethesda Project as we gather over 1,000 gifts for our residents and shelter

guests.

One part of the Holiday Wish List Project is to match donors (individuals and civic, corporate and faith

-based groups) with the requests we have received from the members of our communities (two re-

quests per resident).

Here’s how you can help:

1. If you wish to lend a heart to this project, contact Tyler Hurley at [email protected],

and he will send you the specifics for the one or more $25 wishes that you request (gift cards or

specified gifts).

2. Then you return the wrapped gift(s) to Bethesda Project with the name of the residence (e.g.,

Bethesda Bainbridge) and the resident’s room number on the outside of the gift.

It's so easy!

Avoid the holiday rush. Contact us now for your very own

Bethesda Project Holiday Gift Wish!

Thank you to all the volunteers, staff, and residents who came to the volunteer appreciation event on Nov. 6. It was a great night!
