St. Nicholas
Our family chose Saint Nicholas because we celebrate his feast day on December 6th, as one of our German family traditions, and because he is a wonderful example for giving and helping others succeed.
Saint Nicholas had many virtues. For example, he was very generous. There are many stories that say that St. Nicholas gave money -or gold to a poor family with three daughters, so they could get married and the father would not have to sell them as slaves.
We also learned that he was kind and compassionate to the people that could not defend themselves, to the poor, and the needy. When he lost both of his parents, he became a selfless orphan and gave his rich inheritance to the people in need.
Saint Nicholas was a great example and a true follower of Jesus and God. He was selfless and he put others before himself, and he gave to those people in need in anonymity, without telling anyone so he would not become proud of himself.
We will try to follow Saint Nicholas' example by doing the following acts of kindness for our community.
1. By donating our children’s books to the UMOM group. We like to read a lot and the books that we have already enjoyed, we can donate so other children can enjoy them as well.2. By donating clothes. Our parents have donated clothes to those that need them to go to job interviews, so they look sharp and presentable for the job.3. By donating food items. We have continued to donate food and toiletries for the St. Thomas More pantry, so that families that can't buy the food because of the Coronavirus, or because they have lost their jobs or are sick, can eat or get what their families need.4. By helping in the service projects. Daniel really liked to deliver the Valentine's Day Bags to the elderly group home last year. We hope we can help with this and other service projects this year.
We would like to be better and love our neighbors so we can follow God's example by being the small light when others need it. We will give in anonymity, for the glory of God

Saint Rafael, Archangel
My family decided to select Saint Rafael because he is one of seven archangels, and one of the three that are mentioned in the Bible. We also decide to select Saint Rafael as our saint because, his name means, “God heals.”
Saint Rafael models many different virtues, but the virtue my family and I believed best defined who he was, is the virtue of healing. Some other virtues that Saint Rafael models are happiness and safe travels.
Saint Rafael had the power to help heal others. According to Tobit 12:15, Saint Rafael helped heal Tobit of his blindness. Even though, my family does not have the power to cure anyone’s blindness, we will do everything in our ability to help others get well. We can do this by taking care of each other when we are sick, or by helping out the less fortunate by making sure they have enough food to eat and water to drink. We particularly like to do this even more around the holidays.

Penelope age 9
We ended up selecting St. Sebastian as our family's patron saint. Since it is November, for us Creels, we generally pray about as hard as possible for our KC Chiefs football team and for the safety of all the players during game days. While we routinely pray to God, Jesus and whomever else might be hearing prayers, Penelope and I agreed that having the patron saint of athletes in our corner could only add to our cause!
The thing that stuck out to Penelope most is how St. Sebastian like many other saints was targeted for his Christian faith, but when he was almost killed for it initially, he survived despite all odds! He is a great example of perseverance, one quality we tend to be leaning on more and more as COVID-19 and other earthly challenges continue to impact our lives. We intend to live by his example and stay the course of practicing our faith amidst adversity and keep showing up every day for God, Jesus, family, friends and all others who may cross our path.
