OUR MISSIONFamily Promise Metrowest is a cooperative, interfaith

partnership offering hope to homeless families with children

through safe transitional shelter, meals, and supportive

case management as they seek permanent housing.

OUR STORYThe idea for Family Promise Metrowest was originally

conceived by members of the Wellesley Congregational

Village Church and Christ Lutheran Church of Natick in

2003. The collective vision became a reality when the

Network welcomed the first of its families in October 2008.

Today, Family Promise Metrowest is one of 200 programs

across the country affiliated with Family Promise National.

Since opening our doors, Family Promise Metrowest has

supported 89 families who were homeless. Our concept

is simple. We believe families who are self-motivated have

the ability to move out of poverty if they are given the

encouragement, guidance and resources to reach their

goals. Yet we do not rely on government for this support;

as a community, we all take a role in addressing this issue.

Host congregations open their doors one week at a time,

3–4 weeks a year to provide shelter by converting class-

rooms into bedrooms for our families. A growing network

of over 2,500 trained volunteers from schools, businesses,

civic organizations, congregations and the greater community

provide additional support. Meals are prepared, clothing

is donated and families are embraced by a community of

people who care.

Yet we are much more than a shelter. Our professional staff

provide intensive support in addressing the root causes of

homelessness by setting goals with families for financial

literacy, education, employment and housing.

Together, our volunteers along with professional staff

support and inspire our families to work hard and dare

to dream for a better future.

DEAR FRIENDS,In 2015, our organization experienced a year of profound growth with programs expanded and new initiatives launched to support our families. As families share their journeys with us, we learn firsthand the challenges they face in moving out of poverty. We know that shelter alone is not enough and this past year we grew our programs in direct response to the needs of our families. This year, our Transitional Living Program also expanded and for the first time, we doubled the number of families served. We also recognized the need for individualized supports as some families needed housing subsidies while others required assistance in addressing accumulated debt. Our expanded program guidelines reflect our ability to individualize supports to address the diverse needs of our families.

In September, we began our Steps to Success program, a comprehensive approach to employment that supports families in reaching their highest earning potential. This program encourages our families to dream again and provides resources for further education and training while also providing subsidies as needed for day care and transportation.

To address the lack of affordable housing in the area, we knew we couldn’t truly progress on our own; others were needed. In 2015, we began an initiative with the Natick Affordable Housing Trust to build our first home, a two-family residence in Natick for the exclusive use of our families. We are thrilled to have this project begin and potentially be a model for additional housing in the future.

CARLOS, DAISY, & AMBER began their journey with Family Promise

while looking for an opportunity to get back

on their feet after losing their apartment.

Their perseverance and commitment to

moving out of poverty was clear from the

beginning.

The first goal was to secure employment,

including benefits and long-term growth.

During their search, volunteers

assisted with resume writing

and interview preparation

while Family Promise subsi-

dized day care. Through Family

Promise network connections,

Carlos found a wonderful job

where he continues to thrive.

Daisy was next, and once

working, a day care opening

became available for their

daughter, Amber.

With employment secured

and day care in place, they

began saving, and with dili-

gence and two incomes their

goal was soon reached. Finally,

it was time to find an afford-

able two-bedroom apartment,

which they moved into in May

of 2015, just in time for a new

addition to their family,

Maximus!

Today the family is in our Transitional Living

Program and continues to work toward their

savings and debt reduction goals. They meet

monthly with their Case Manager who offers

guidance and support ensuring long-term

sustainability.

OUR NEWEST INITIATIVE: STEPS TO SUCCESS Family Promise Metrowest has always emphasized the

need for our families to be employed. As a result, since

opening our doors in 2008, 90% of our families have been

employed when leaving the shelter. Initially this appeared

to be a successful outcome, yet as we began to look more

closely, we were concerned that many of our families still

remained below the poverty level.

The Steps to Success program was introduced in September 2015 to break this cycle of poverty. Through

a comprehensive approach, parents are supported in

reaching their highest earning potential, ensuring long

term sustainability.

The program takes our guests through several phases

of career development: needs assessment, to identify

strengths, skills and personal capacity; job exploration,

to identify their preferred career path; skill development,

to help fill educational or training gaps; networking, to

find opportunities for employment or training in the

community; and establishing employment, to provide

assistance in the application and interviewing process.

Less than a year into the program, our families have met

with great success:

> Education and Skill Development: To date, we’ve

assisted 8 of 11 guests in taking classes in Microsoft

Office, ServSafe certification, Driver’s Education, ESL,

English 101, HiSET, Business Plan Development, and

basic computer skills. We’ve also had 6 guests

work with tutors or business professionals for academic

coursework support, computer skills training, ESL

support, interviewing, and business plan development.

> Networking and Employment: To date, 6 of 11 guests

have interviewed for new positions with the

support of the Steps to Success program, and all

6 guests ultimately received job offers. (The remaining

5 guests maintained their current employment.)

We are excited for the potential this new program brings to

our families and look forward to their future accomplish-

a community approach

A STORY OF OUR COMMUNITY WORKING TOGETHER William, Yari and their girls entered our shelter in 2015, where volunteers in our congregations offered meals and safe

shelter. To ensure long-term sustainability, they also began working immediately with staff on goals for budgeting, day

care, employment and transportation.

William was working a full-time job, allowing Yari to take ESL classes to increase her employment possibilities. As her

skills grew, Yari began a job search while Family Promise Metrowest (FPM) provided day care subsidies and transportation.

Network volunteers offered assistance studying for classes, writing a resume and preparing for interviews.

Yari soon secured a job in the restaurant industry for 30 hours/week, making Jaylianis eligible for subsidized day care.

Destiny also started school full-time. To address transportation needs, William and Yari studied hard and obtained their

driver’s licenses. Hearing the news, a member of the Family Promise network generously donated a vehicle to the family.

Having budgeted, the family had enough money saved for registering and insuring the car.

After achieving their goals, William and Yari were ready to move, but unable to find an apartment they could afford in the

area. Outreach to the network began and another generous donor offered to subsidize their rent while a local landlord

agreed to allow FPM to be a guarantor. This gives the family time to continue working with FPM on reaching a higher

family income. As a result, the family moved into a two-bedroom apartment where they will be served through our

Transitional Living program with case management for one more year.

On a final note, with our recent need for another part-time driver, William recently joined the FPM staff where he is now

able to assist other families in shelter.
