So when I first looked at the Rockies schedule and saw they were playing in St. Louis the weekend after finals, it made sense to me to pack my bags and buy tickets to Busch Stadium for a weekend double- header. I made the long trek from northwest Iowa with Alex Wolters, my baseball teammate from Dordt Col- lege. He is a hard-core Cardinals fan, so we figured it would be a friendly rivalry to finish off my freshman year. The ten-hour drive down I-29 and across I-70 was exciting and even involved a surprise rest stop at Kauffman Stadium to watch the Royals host the Yan- kees. Growing up, I loved baseball and grew to love my Colorado Rockies. I remember staying up late, well past my bedtime in 2007, to watch Matt Holliday safely slide into home in game 163. I was there when Jonathan Papelbon and the Red Sox clinched a World Series win at Coors Field, and I was there when Tulo turned an unassisted triple play in that same year. But one thing that I had never seen was the Rockies play and win away from Colorado. My first game in St. Louis—game two of the se- ries—was a struggle for the Rockies. Adam Wain- wright continued his dominating spring for the Cardinals with a two-hit, complete-game shutout against the Rockies. At one point during the game, Cardinal pitchers had combined to retire 40 straight batters, tying a Major League record. It was not the most enjoyable time to be a Rock- ies fan. But at last, Nolan Arenado singled on a line drive up the middle to end the streak. Unfortunately, the Rockies couldn’t mount much more of an offense than that and ended up dropping the game, 3-0. The final game of the series was much better for a Rockies fan. The Rox jumped out to a three-run lead in the third inning, thanks to a Troy Tulowitzki four-bagger to deep left. Jorge De La Rosa pitched seven innings of two-hit baseball and when it was all said and done, the Colorado Rockies avoided the sweep, winning 8-2. R 1998 After 20 years of racing, Dale Earnhardt wins the Daytona 500. The first NCAA Football BCS Championship Game is played in Tempe, Ariz., between Florida State and Tennessee, with Tennessee winning. 1999 Wayne Gretzky retires from the National Hockey League. I wore my Rockies gear proudly in a sea of red, here with my friend and teammate Alex (middle left) and his two brothers, Noah (left) and Oliver (right).
