Learn to Attract Birds to your Backyard with Local Naturalist Pat Sutton

The Cape May County Library invites the public to join in “Fresh Voices: Melissa Palmer, Author of Twin Oaks” presented by Melissa Palmer at the Cape May Court House Library on Friday, February 20th at 7:00 p.m. The branch is located at 30 W. Mechanic St., Cape May Court House.

Come and join as Cape May County Library hosts author Melissa Palmer. Palmer will be offering an interactive reading from her book “Twin Oaks.” The book description is as follows: Twin Oaks is a self-contained commu-nity where it seems that skies are always blue, the grass is always green, flow-ers bloom prolifically, the houses exude charm and grace and the people are decent and always cordial. Yet appearances can be de-ceiving, for beneath exteri-ors lay the darker elements of personality: madness, envy, infidelity and spiritual vacuity.

Melissa Palmer was nominated for the Push-cart Prize for short fiction “Mrs. MacMillan’s Garden” which was the inspiration for Twin Oaks. She was nominated for the Eric Hof-fer Prize for short fiction for her story “Blood”. But of all the honors she was most touched when the McS-torytellers named her an honorary Scot for her story “At This Moment”. Her work has been featured by Best New Writing, The Quotable and The Writ-ing Disorder among oth-ers. In her spare time she wrangles Newfoundlands, two precocious girls, and one very handsome cat with the help of the strong, silent drink of water with whom she shares her life. Melissa is also the author of A Life Less Normal, a memoir examining the life of a woman- child growing up in the shadow of mental illness with the support of

her proverbial north Jersey crime family.

County Library Hosts Local Author

WEST CAPE MAY - The West Cape May Environmental Com-mission will host an informa-tive, free evening featuring local naturalist and author, Pat Sutton. "Common Backyard Birds Attract-ed by a Backyard Habitat -- Create it and they will come -- with Em-phasis on How We Can Help Win-ter Birds" will be offered free to the public Jan. 23, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at West Cape May Boro Hall, 732 Broadway, West Cape May. free Pizza will be served at 6:30 p.m. before the program. Pat and Clay Sutton’s landmark book, Birds and Birding at Cape May (Stackpole Books, 2006) will be available for purchase and signing after the program as well as other books by Pat and Clay including How to Spot Butterflies (1999), How to Spot Hawks & Eagles (1996), and How to Spot an Owl (1994). Please call (609) 884-0780 for more information or to register a large group.

Pat Sutton will share many ‘backyard habitat for wildlife tips’. She will explain how you can create your own back-yard habitat and question each practice as to whether or not it will help or harm wildlife to insure birds and other wildlife will come and benefit. Pat Sutton will share ac-counts of the many visitors that have been attracted to the South Jersey wildscape that she and her husband have nurtured for over thirty years in Goshen, Cape May County. “We have tallied 212 species of birds and 78 spe-cies of butterflies in our tiny one-half-acre wildlife oasis,” explains Sutton. “Each season brings new entertainment, like the winter gathering of 109 White-throated Sparrows feeding on millet scattered on the ground or the summer gathering of 83 Leopard Frogs attracted to their two wild-life ponds. Spent hanging baskets left up all winter on the front porch host a pair of Carolina Wrens each freezing-

cold winter night, nestled down in the spent petunias – the safest nighttime refuge from the neigh-bor’s outdoor cats. Spring brings dazzling breeding-plumaged war-blers feasting on caterpillars in the Sutton’s woodlot of native trees. Dozens of Ruby-throated Hum-mingbirds entertain from mid-April until mid-September.”

Pat Sutton has keenly studied the natural world for over 30 years, first as the naturalist at the Cape May Point State Park in the 1970s

and 1980s and then for 21 years as the naturalist and pro-gram director at the Cape May Bird Observatory (1986 to 2007). Today Pat is a free-lance writer, photographer, nat-uralist, educator, lecturer, tour leader, and wildlife garden consultant. Sutton’s own wildlife garden is a “teaching garden” featured in programs and workshops she teaches and is included on many tours, including tours of private wildlife gardens that she has led for twenty-three years.
