Avercamp painted in the tradition ofBrueghel, filling his airy landscapes withsmall lively figures skating, sprawling, dancing, and working on the frozenrivers and canals, singly or in groups. His buildings and trees have as muchcheerfulness and movement as maybe found in the figures, which seem likeanimated puppets.
