Rector’s Mess age
Dear Friends,
It seems like only a few weeks ago that season was winding down with summer approach-ing. We are now on the cusp of fall which will bring another year with a plethora of activities and opportunities for growth, learning and sharing. This month we will also be saying fare-well to Mother Alice on Sunday, the 24th of August. A festive brunch will be served and I hope that many of you will be able to attend. Mother Alice has been a blessing these past thirteen years and it is now time for us to send her to St. John’s Church, Tampa, to continue her priestly ministry. They will certainly be blessed to have her as a part of their parish family.
It does seem as if Restoration 60 is never going to end! Work continues in and around the Parish Hall complex, most recently in the office wing. Windows have been replaced and it is currently in the midst of having the interior painted. New carpet will be installed towards the end of the month. We are hoping the required building permits will soon be completed al-lowing Garrett Construction to begin work on the nursery addition to the children’s wing. The fountain courtyard will also receive a bit of a facelift. The work on the church side of the plant still to be accomplished chiefly involves landscaping and exterior lighting. This too will begin towards the end of August or first of September. We were very fortunate, perhaps blessed, that our beloved church was not burned to the ground due to the lighting strike in early July that took out our air conditioning and electrical components of the pipe organ. All is now repaired and we are back into our church for corpo-rate worship and private prayers. Please take the time to peruse this issue of the Trinitarian to get a glimpse of what is ahead. It’s going to be a great season for our parish life and ministry that will also bring a completion to Restoration 60!

Coming this Month Seminarian Daniel Moore & Family
D aniel Moore, his wife Kristin, and their two children, Madeleine, age 5, and Jon, age 4, have
arrived in Naples and are settling in. Daniel is 31 years old and has just finished his second year at Duke Divinity School. Originally from Char-lottesville, Virginia, Daniel has a background in English and philosophy; he studied at James Madison University receiving a BA in 2005, and went on to receive a Masters in Medieval Literature at the University of Virginia prior to pursuing ordained ministry.
This internship is an opportunity for Daniel to experience the breadth of ministry at Trinity-by-the-Cove, which is considered a large resource parish in the Episcopal Church. Not only will he gain experience by preaching two of his Sundays with us, he will have time to explore how Trinity-by-the-Cove goes about its mission and ministry and learn the nuts and bolts of ordained ministry. This summer internship is a way Trinity-by-the-Cove can give to the wider church and equip Daniel and his family for the years ahead in his ministry.
18th Annual
Undy Sunday August 10th & August 17th
T he Undy Sunday Drive is sponsored by Catho-lic Charities of Collier County and Trinity-by-
the-Cove has generously participated each year. You are asked to purchase new underwear and socks (sizes 4 to 12) for needy school children in Collier County. Your donations are distributed by Catholic Charities in Naples and Immokalee and the Children’s Advocacy Center, the Shelter for Abused Women and Children and Youth Haven; wherever the most need has been identified. Last year more than 38 churches and syna-gogues took part and donated tens of thousands of underwear and socks which were distributed to 27 elementary schools and six social service agencies throughout Collier County. Twenty or thirty dollars will go a long way at Target, K-Mart, Sams, SuperWalmart, etc. to help many needy children start off the new school year with new underwear and socks.
Faith and Beer Meets in August
T he 20’s and 30’s (alright and some early 40’s) will meet in August, beginning on August 6th and continuing through August 27th. We’ll gather at a local pub to talk about our faith,
scripture, church and life. Fr. Edward will lead the discussion beginning on August 6th with Frequently Asked Questions about the Episcopal Church followed by questions and answers and time to get to know our sum-mer intern, Daniel Moore. We’ll also talk about what we want to learn about the following three weeks. Please email Fr. Edward with any questions: [email protected].
Summer cleaning in the children's Catechesis Atriums
WOW! The atria have been painted, the catechists have set everything up, and we are ready for the children!!! (Although Rally Day isn't until Sept 7th!) As we cleaned, we found several projects that need completing. Some are simple cut outs, others are hemming, and some are painting or coloring. Each is packaged in a big baggie with instructions inside. If you have time and would like to help, please see Linda Gemmer on Sunday, or check out the basket and see if there is one you'd like, or email [email protected] August 22-25th, Trinity-by-the-Cove is hosting a Level II Catechesis training and if you would like to serve on the hospitality team we'd love for you be a part of our weekend. We still need housing for 2 catechists from Seminole, FL if you have an extra bedroom. (No meals are required.) Thank you for your support and prayers as we begin
a new Formation Year with Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd.

The Church Mouse
L ydia Kerr, chair of the Church Mouse, is asking for members to consider volunteer-
ing at the Mouse, one morning a week. The Mouse holds monthly sales throughout the year and then has two large sales, one in October and one in February that include furniture items. Volunteers are needed throughout the year to help with sorting and pricing. If you are new to Trinity-by-the-Cove, this is a great ministry to get involved with. Please contact Lydia Kerr (514-2287 or [email protected]).
MUSIC NOTE
T he lightning strike which hit the church in June, taking out the electrical system, the
tower bells, the alarm, the air conditioning, and the organ, had a silver lining. It was this: we worshiped in the parish hall for four weeks and were able to hear the pristine tones of the an-tique chamber organ built in Germany in the 18th century. Each Sunday, we augmented our musical forces with orchestral instruments in various combina-tions: flute, violin, cello; and because there is plenty of room for extra musicians in the hall, the grand piano was also employed for certain anthems, such as Panis angelicus by César Franck. Hearing some of the favorite chamber works for cello and violin by Bach, Telemann, Handel and Saint-Saëns was a refreshing con-trast to the fortissimo of the mighty Casavant organ across the street.

PARKSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MINISTRY
I t is amazing what a smile, an hour out of the month, baking and donating goodies can do. Sim-
ple acts that say:” We care; we know your job is diffi-cult; we appreciate you!” Often, the result remains a mystery. The act is done because it is right, fun, feels good to the giver. This past school year, Trinitarians have, for many reasons, given of their time to Parkside Elementary School. They volunteered in the classroom, on field trips, donated school supplies, recognized staff birthdays and showed their appreci-ation with ice cream socials, goodies and even a din-ner. And, we have enjoyed the interaction; giving was fun! As important, it has made a difference that can be seen! Tamie Stewart, Parkside school principal, put it best in her thank you to Trinity-by-the-Cove:
As we close another school year at Parkside we want to tell you again how much we value our partnership with the Trinity-by-the-Cove con-gregation. It is a frequent occurrence around the office to overhear someone commenting on this nice treat, or that nice birthday card from Trinity. We are excited to share some great data about our goal of teacher retention, which is where your support has had a direct impact. At the end of last year (2012-2013) we were facing 28 teach-ers leaving, 19 of which were transfers to other schools. Filling those positions was a daunting task. As of now in this school year we have 9 teachers leaving, only 4 of which are transfers! The other five are retiring or moving to other areas. And our newly hired teachers include 6 teachers from within the district with experience who chose to come to Parkside! So not only is there an impact on retention, but recruitment as well!
People want to come to our school to be a part of the Parkside family. The atmosphere here and the school cul-ture are big factors in this improvement in retention figures, and you all are a major player in helping us keep that atmosphere positive. Your involvement clearly makes a significant difference here.
In addition, Tom Gemmer, Parkside School Counselor shared the following with Father Michael and Cookie Coleman:
We are back to school this week for another busy year, which we anticipate being a great one. I know Ms. Stewart sent you the news last spring about our positive steps in retaining our staff. Since then we have learned that our school grade improved from an F to a C, and that we were awarded a School Improvement Grant (one of only three schools in the state) which will allow us to add three new key staff posi-tions, extend our school day and year, and add to our after school enrichment programs. So the energy and excitement is high!
You will find a new Parkside Birthday list on display in the Parish Hall. Here is the proce-dure: select a name from the list and write your name where indicated; purchase a birth-day card and a gift card for that person; sign the birthday card and put the gift card in it; indicate on the outside of the envelope who it is for and bring it back to the parish hall and file it in the box in the correct month slot. We have received numerous thank you notes from the Parkside teachers and staff and know how much this small gesture means to them. Gift cards can be purchased almost anywhere and we recommend a $25 to $30 value. (Target, WalMart, Costco, Applebees, and Pub-lix are always well received.

Community Grant Commission Report to the Vestry, May, 2014
The Community Grant Commission has successfully completed its work for this year. We had thirteen agencies under review, and have recommended funding for each agency. We began the year with twelve members and had one resignation for personal reasons. Marilyn Tiburski was our representative from the Vestry and Jenny Anton was our representative for Women of Trinity. The other members were: Russell Tuff, Alice Fraser, Don Lein, Torrey Foster, Diana Harrison, Barbara Sill, Bette Aymar and Ron Echols. The agencies under review were split into small groups for our onsite visits; each group visiting 3 or 4 agencies. We are recommending a total expenditure of $147,600. Two of our grants are provisional. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers requested money to upgrade their radio tower. Permits are required and we will not disperse any funds until their permitting is in place. And, Immokalee Housing did not use all the funds they received from us three years ago. They have put the funds in a CD. After we determine the amount left in the CD, we will make up the difference for the total they requested for computer equipment. Women of Trinity contributed $20,000 and the Fine Art of Living $150,000 for a total of $170,000 to dis-perse. This leaves $22,400 left unspent. This amount could be rolled over for the calendar year 2015 or made available for the Grant Commission to use in the case of unexpected need by an agency before our next grant reviews. Below is a complete list of the agencies Trinity-by-the-Cove via the Grant Commission with funds raised by parishioners through the Fine Art of Living Events, the Christmas Market, and the Church Mouse sales. Thank you to everyone who helped support these efforts.

Fun making Trinity’s famous Mango Chutney
Sign up to join others making Trinity-by-the-Cove’s famous Mango Chutney sold every year at the Christmas Market in November! Our very own Canning Queen Carol Williamson will be on hand to guide you in the church kitch-en on August 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th. There is a roster in the hall—let’s us know when you can help in this fun project.
Thanks to the above parishioners, over 300 pounds of mangoes were peeled and chopped in just two days time! It is a very messy and time consuming job. However, they all had fun with that project even though there is talk of not eating mangos for the rest of the summer!
“Quiet” Summer Projects
M ost of us are aware that Naples and Trinity both quiet down during the long summer
months. And, our Rector has often shared that “nothing happens here during the summer.” To bring everyone up to date and to somewhat dispel the rector’s statement, this is what has been happening during our slowwwww summer: — installed new walkways to the Church
—labyrinth 90% completed behind the Church
—installation of new AC units in the church which required complete disman- tling of the old and new units in order to make everything fit
—installation of new outside windows on the parish hall (hurricane proof)
—repainting of the administrative offices (not completed yet)
—installation of new carpet in the offices (on back order)
—Church Mouse rooms repainted, new shelving installed and new flooring still to arrive next week. On the horizon for August, September and beyond will be the redesign of the fountain court-yard with new sculpture and landscape design; construction of the new nursery building, and completion of the landscaping and lighting around the church building. Quiet summer it has not been!
