Farewell, Pr. Margaret

On June 14 we said good-bye to Pastor Margaret Schoewe as she moves into retirement. The worship services were planned with Pastor Margaret’s love of special music in mind as well as a special liturgy. Thank you to the special guests in attendance, some of them Pastor Margaret’s friends from the past and present, as well as family members from all over the country. The Rev. Bishop Jeff Barrow as well as The Rev. Kristin Nielsen representing the ELCA Greater Milwaukee Synod attended the morning services.

In the afternoon, the congregation held a wonderful luncheon in Fellowship Hall. Lunch was thoughtfully prepared by Matthew Petersen, LSTC seminary student and son of the congregation, for about 200 people. During the luncheon, there was a program with more than a dozen people thanking Pastor Margaret for her leadership and remarkable energy, demonstrating the effect that Pastor Margaret had on our congregation.

At the end of the luncheon Pastor Chris gathered the group as you see above for one last good-bye. Pr. Margaret is in the front and center right, next to Tim. Pr. Margaret & Tim’s sons are on Tim’s right; Christian and Andrew; continuing to the left, Devon (daughter-in-law); Kat (daughter-in-law) with Gabriel and sitting next to Hudson (grandsons).

We wish her well, and ask that God will continue to bless her and Tim during this exciting new chapter.

“The Path... The Journey... The Way”“But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors, believing everything laid down according to the law or written in the prophets. I have a hope in God…that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” —Acts 24:14-15

“Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name.” —Psalm 86:11

“…[Love] does not insist on its own way…” —1 Corinthians 13:5If you’d think back over the past few weeks, imagine all the different paths your feet have moved. Walking down the stairs to brew your morning coffee with the Journal Sentinel or New York Times. Hustling down the corridors at work, making it just in time for your next appointment. The smooth marble floors beneath your feet, stepping forward to receive communion. Barefoot strolls along a lakeshore; the sound of crunching earth beneath you on a mossy hiking trail; the regular rhythms of your daily jogging or biking path. The marketing professionals at Fidelity Investments imagined these ways of walking too. A recent advertising campaign featured all sorts of life experiences, yet the familiar floors, well-worn paths, and nature-filled ways portrayed in their world were superimposed with a continuous green-line, an arrow leading forward.

To hold investments with Fidelity, the story goes, one can be assured of staying on the right path—the path moving ahead, the pathway toward a life filled with financial success and security. Meeting recently with a couple before their wedding, it struck me just how often we think about our lives of faith like that forward-moving green line, and how far we have strayed from the earliest Christians as they sought to follow “The Way.” Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, to live an ethical life and to be a child of God is to walk in the ways of the Lord God. The earliest Christ-followers, after the resurrection, called their movement “The Way,” and

sought to follow the teachings, practices, and worldview (the Reign of God) of Jesus—the “Way of Love” Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians, a way alternative to the ways of the world. We often find ourselves using all sorts of human-created metrics to judge whether or not we think we’re on the line—on our

way toward the goal not of financial success, but of heavenly security. Most of these metrics—baptism or confirmation, church attendance, moral behavior, regularity of prayer, fill in your own blank—focus our faith practice so much about whether or not we’re on the line—I think we might miss the places God is meeting us along our way. Our desire is so concerned about being right, or being safe, or being good enough, that we miss the places where God’s grace is reaching us—the righteous and the unrighteous alike—and the places where the Holy Spirit promises to follow us along our way. Along God’s way. A recent blogpost I came upon put it well: Making these sort of statements or actions of faith “may be an important shared, sacred ritual, a marker in time, a way to allow others to both hold you up and help hold you accountable. But that’s not the thing. The walk is the thing.” Whatever ways and paths your summer plan place you upon, it is my hope and prayer that we are able to see beyond whatever marketer-made green line we think we need to be on, and to find God’s grace and support along each step of our paths.

...focus our faith practice so much about whether or not we’re on the line—I think we might miss the places God is meeting us along our way.

This Summer at St. Matthew’s7:30 Summer Worship Continues Through suggestions from the congregation, during the summer months St. Matthew’s has been continuing the early morning 7:30 service. This addition to our summer worship offerings is there for those of you that wish to worship early on a Sunday morning, before you start your Sunday adventures. This 7:30 service is a shortened 35-40 minutes prayer service with a Gospel message and music. We celebrate Holy Communion on the 1st, 2nd and 5th Sundays of the month. We hope that offering this early service will help to accommodate your busy summer life which can include Sunday worship.

Youth Mission Trip Group Returns June 28thSpecial Worship Service on July 12thto share Mission Trip experiences After spending a week in Denver working with agencies that serve the low income and homeless populations, our group of high school youth and chaperones returned to St. Matthew’s on June 28th. God’s Work. Our Hands. God is calling you. You have answered; you continue to say “yes” every day in a variety of ways. On September 13, 2015, you will have the opportunity to put your “yes” into action with members of over 10,000 ELCA congregations nation-wide as we celebrate the ELCA’s dedicated day of service, God’s Work. Our Hands. No matter your age or physical condition, whether you like to work in groups or alone, whether you have 30 minutes or three hours, whether you prefer to help inside the walls of St. Matthew’s or out in the community, you can serve. Even if you need to watch the Packers-Bears game, we can accommodate your schedule. You can sign up for a specific project in the Commons beginning on Sunday, July 12, and each Sunday thereafter until September 13. Talk to your family, your small group, your committee, your friends, your ministry partners. Join the worker bees of St. Matthew’s, the Greater Milwaukee Synod, and the ELCA. In the words of Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, “We are church together, and we are church for the sake of the world.”

Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eatonto be our guest in 2016! On February 28, 2016, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will spend the day at St. Matthew’s, preaching the Word and presenting an afternoon session for the Day of Grace. Elected at the national assembly in 2013, Bishop Eaton serves the whole Church as preacher, teacher, interpreter, and administrator of the sacraments in addition to her duties as chief executive officer of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She is the Church’s chief ecumenical officer and provides leadership for the 65 synodical bishops. And, she is a pastor, one of our pastors, whose discernment, wisdom, and words help to guide our Church. Over the next few months the Voice will be publishing excerpts from Bishop Eaton’s regular column in The Lutheran, as well as other statements and messages to the whole Church, so that the people of St. Matthew’s can get to know her and anticipate the gifts she will bring to the Day of Grace.

We are church. At the heart of what we do is worship, and at the heart of our worship is the crucified and risen Christ. Everything else we do is formed, nourished, sustained and transformed by our life as a faith community gathered around word and sacrament, abiding in the love of God. Without this intentional, regular communion with God and each other it’s not possible for us to speak an authentic word of hope to a broken world – the world God so loves. When we gather for worship we hear God’s word of promise; we confess our helplessness; receive forgiveness; we pray; and welcome new brothers and sisters through baptism, promising to support them in their walk in faith. We are fed with the bread of life and receive our Lord poured out for us. And then we are sent back into the world. Worship is essential for the church’s life and service. ...And what about the worship service itself? We are a liturgical church. There is a certain humility and beautiful communion in not trying to reinvent the service each time, but to join with brothers and sisters throughout the world and across the centuries. ...Most of all we should come to worship expecting to be changed. We are touching, tasting, feeling, hearing and seeing the one who knows us and loves us completely. Our lives are restored. We are set free. Fed for the journey we are set loose to go in peace and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.

St. Matthew’s Becomes a Welcoming Congregation in Partnership with Salvadoran Lutheran Church Imagine having to make the difficult decision to leave your family, home, and place of birth in order to escape the very real threat of violence, especially when the decision to leave brings with it a hazardous journey of thousands of miles with no guarantee that you will be allowed to stay in the country of your destination This is the very real scenario for thousands of teens and young adults in El Salvador because of fear of gang violence. It is never an easy decision for the young adults or for the families they leave behind; it is made even more difficult when there is no sense of welcome for those who complete the challenging trek to the U.S. In response, ELCA synods that partner with the Salvadoran Lutheran Church are joining an initiative called Welcoming Congregations. At its April meeting, the St. Matthew’s Church Council approved a request for St. Matthew’s to become a Welcoming Congregation. As a Welcoming Congregation, St. Matthew’s agrees to provide a spiritual home and to attend to the humanitarian needs of an undocumented immigrant who is referred to us by the bishop of the Salvadoran Lutheran Church. Becoming a Welcoming Congregation does not involve St. Matthew’s doing anything illegal; it simply means that we would offer welcome, prayer, inclusion and help with very basic needs, such as food and clothing and referrals to medical or legal resources. In joy and in struggle, we walk with the Salvadoran Lutheran Church as partners. Becoming a Welcoming Congregation is one more step on that walk, allowing us to live out the biblical imperative found in Jesus’ words in Matthew 25: I was a stranger and you welcomed me. . . whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Can you Sponsor a Child in Reformation’s S.A.L.T. Ministry?Sponsorships Available for $10 - $250 See Display in Commons Just as St. Matthew’s supports the educational costs of children in Tanzania and El Salvador through annual sponsorships, we are continuing our support of children much closer to home by again offering the opportunity for you to sponsor kids who participate in Reformation Lutheran Church’s S.A.L.T. (Serving And Learning Together) Youth Ministry. Throughout July, the halls and streets of Reformation’s Holy Ground are alive with the sounds of young people ages 9 to 17, working and serving together. Can you sponsor a child for $10, $25, $50, or more? Please see our

display in the Commons, and take a tool tag with the level of support that you wish to provide.

Checks can be left in the collection box at the display or placed in the offering

plate with “Reformation S.A.L.T. Program” written on the memo line. Children in the S.A.L.T. Program attend morning sessions at Reformation during the month of July. Each session includes devotions, community service, and lunch. The approximately 50 children who attend all sessions earn $250 at the end of the summer to help them buy school clothes and supplies. This program could not operate without contributions from Reformation’s partnership churches. Through our partnership ministry, our St. Matthew’s family continues to grow – in Milwaukee, in San Salvador, and in Arusha, Tanzania. Thank you for opening your hearts to children who need your support and for being consistently willing to find room for one more child in our large and expanding family!

Summer Sunday Discussion Group: “Strength for the Struggle”July 12, 19, and 26th; 6:30—8:00 p.m. Imagine for a moment that you are God. Looking at the world—at the context of our city, at the dramatic increase in violence, hunger, and joblessness. How would you respond? What questions might you ask? What emotions fill your heart? For three Sunday nights this summer, as a congregational community we have space to think, talk, pray, and discuss these sorts of questions—What and Who is God calling us to be? Enjoy a light dinner, fellowship, and discussion about living out our faith in the context of Milwaukee and its history. Using excerpts and sections from Pastor Joe Ellwanger’s memoir, Strength for the Struggle, join this conversation and explore some of the following questions:

> How do we join in prayer, self-examination, and discernment about issues of class, race, violence, and poverty?

> What does our faith call us to do and say?

> Where do we see God and search for hope?

> How do we engage issues of the city from outside the city?

> Where do we feel “Holy friction?”

To purchase Strength for the Struggle, speak with Pastor Matt. If you are willing to make and bring a summer salad to share, please sign up with the church office prior to each week’s session.

In 1999, a Meru coffee farmer asked a visiting Milwaukee pastor the simple question; “We grow coffee; you drink coffee; would you buy your coffee from us?” And thus was born The Mt. Meru Coffee Project.

St. Matthew’s Music MinistryPiano Fund Established A piano fund has been graciously established in memory of Eric Kloth to replace the piano used in our worship space. The current piano, while still in good shape, has always been too small for the renovated/new worship space. Because of that, to lead worship, the pianist must work that much harder for the sound to carry through the sanctuary. We are currently assessing the options available to purchase a larger instrument of superior quality to enhance our worship. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to this fund can contact the office.

“We Promise to Pray for You”Baptismal Anniversariesfor July recognized Several times each month, babies, children and adults are baptized during our worship services. During the service of baptism, after the person is baptized, the congregation welcomes him or her and promises to pray for him or her during his/her faith development. We reprint these baptism names and dates from the previous few years as a reminder of those baptized.

How did it all begin? Bev started her work in the library after teaching Sunday School for 15 years, and the church had just given the newly formed library committee some funds to upgrade the resources in the library. The library originated in the 1960s as the Education Building was completed (the south wing of the building). The library is named Judge Roy R. Stauff Memorial Library.

What was one of the first things you did? “I felt it was very important to incorporate some children’s books for our children as well as the young people of the church. At that time, there were not a lot of young families, but I wanted to expose the children to reading Christian materials. “The library was originally housed in the conference room, which at that time was across from John Paradowski’s office. It was next to the men’s room, facing east and looking out on the courtyard. It was an out of the way library with little exposure. I think at one point I even put down some footsteps on the floor leading from the church down the corridor to the Library. The large conference table took up the majority of the room.

Was it difficult to convince church leadership that an improved library was important? “Pastor Gary Erickson was instrumental in moving the library to the current location with the renovation in 1988. He had a vision and knew it was important to offer quality reading to all that walked by. We worked together to set up the adults and children’s sections. Of course everything was on card catalog at the time and never dreamed of having videos and now DVDs. “People say “Oh, you have such a nice library,” “Your windows are so nice,” etc. From the start, the Library is not my works but it all belongs to God. He led me down the right path and with a lot of love and support from Pastor Gary, the library flourished.

How did you keep up with larger library changes? “As the computer became more widely used, we moved from the card catalog to entering everything on the computer. Judy Holmes and Norma Winters would come at night to use the computer in the office to transfer from card to computer. That took almost a year. I still use that same format today as the Microsoft Excel serves all my purposes. “I have worked on all areas of the library to stay current and offer timely materials to the congregation. I have focused on Tweens and Young Adults books the past few years. I read all of the children’s, Tweens and Young Adults to make sure the content is acceptable.

““Etz” (Husband, Ken) has been my partner in this journey. I would ask his advice with theological books. He never once said ‘Oh you are going over to church again.” He’s been a true partner and always so patient to wait for Sunday School to be over before we could go home.

It’s more than a room of books “I’m proud to tell people that the library is built where the original sanctuary was build in 1921. The room has a special warmth to it as we continue to spread the word of God. “That room was also my sanctuary in many ways. The room was a quiet place for me as I went through my chemo treatments in 1990 and some other difficult times along the way.

Are you done with library work now? “I have been blessed to share my experience and knowledge beyond the doors of St. Matt’s. A few librarians formed a Southeast Wisconsin Chapter of the Church and Synagogue Library Association in 2003, and I currently serve on its national board. Through these connections I gain knowledge to keep up on the latest books. Also, I seem to be the local “mentor” for many other area churches to help start up a library or resurrect a neglected collection. I continue to mentor to librarians nationwide. Etz and I will be attending the annual CSLA conference in northern Texas in July. “Thanks for the support to the current Library Committee and all that have served over the years.” Bev was touched that her entire family came to support and congratulate her on May 31 as well as many St. Matthew’s friends. The large floral arrangement outside the library is in honor of Bev Etzelmueller’s church librarian retirement was given by the Etzelmueller family; husband, Ken; daughter, Kristen; and son, Steve, and his wife Kristin, and children, Jacob, Mark and Cori.

Bulletin Board Healing Service Schedule: Healing services are offered monthly at St. Matthew’s at a variety of times to give all the opportunity to come forward for healing prayer for themselves or others. You can share your concern with the pastor/leader at the altar, and then he/she along with the healing ministries will lay on hands and give a special prayer for your concern. Your concern can be general if you don’t wish to share specifically. All are welcome.

Sunday, June 28 - 8:30 communion serviceSunday, July 19 - Healing service as part of the 10:15 a.m. service

The Summer Worship Schedule began on June 21: During the summer, the late service begins a little earlier. Our services times are 7:30 - 8:30 - 10:15 a.m.This continues through Labor Day weekend.

Summer Office Hours: Please be aware of our summer office hours, when theoffice closes earlier on Fridays. Monday - Thursday 8:30-12:00, 1:00 - 4:30 Friday, 8:30 - 2:00As always call ahead for special needs.

THANK YOU: Thank you! On behalf of our team, Remembering Eric Kloth, NAMI, the mentally ill and their families, and from us, Luther and Doris Kloth, we would like to thank St. Matthew’s for your wonderful support of our 2015 mis-sion. Donations for this year’s walk can still be made until July 10, 2015. We are thankful that St. Matthew’s is such a generous and giving congregation.

From Carmen Pitre, Executive Director of Sojourner Family Peace Center: “Thank you for your support of our mission and for helping those affected by domestic violence in our community. We greatly appreciate your donation of diapers to Sojourner Family Peace Center... Your generosity allows us to give the families we serve the comfort they need...

Thanks, Pr. Ed Winters! At the Greater Milwaukee Synod Assembly this year, Pr. Ed Winters was honored and thanked for all the years he created a prayer chapel at the synod assembles. He would collect items from the various communities where he ministered and bring them out to the assembly location, set them up, even considering music and scents. It was a place for attendees to stop to pray, but also a model for others to use in setting up their own sacred space.

A special thank you to everyone that donated money and diapers to the Mother’s Day diaper drive. Everyone’s help makes this event special and successful each year. - Annie DeArmond, Everett and Marin

The construction in the streets continues between our block and west toward Ridge Court and all of Ridge Court. We will soon have our curb and gutter back, but paving comes a little later. The good news is that even though it might be a bumpy ride to get to our driveway, it will be open, and that’s an improvement over a few days this summer when the main lot was inaccessible.

Our Church FamilyA Poem for Pastor Margaret

We welcomed you nine years agoto help us find our wayto understand the word of Godand lead us when we pray.

It seems like only yesterdaywe heard you say “hello”and now the letter that you wrotesaid it’s your time to go.

You were a lantern in the darkthat lit the path aheadand helped us walk upon the onewhere Jesus once had led.

You’ve always shown a deep concernfor those of us in pain. The words of comfort that you spokewill in our thoughts remain.

How fortunate we all have been to call you pastor, friend, and even though you’re moving on our mem’ry never ends!

I’m sure in Heaven’s realm abovethe Father and the SonLook down on you and smile and say“Well done, my child, well done!”
