It presents the role of rural communication services to advance family farming, giving special attention to the International Year of Family Farming #IYFF14, as well as the International Forum on Communication and Community Media for Family Farming that FAO will host in October 2014.

FAMILY FARMING includes all family-based agricultural activities[agriculture, forestry, fisheries, pastoral production, aquaculture]

Over 500 of the 570 million farms worldwide are family-owned Family farmers are responsible for at least 56% of agricultural production They work on a significant portion of the world’s farming land

[e.g. 85% Asia, 62% Africa, 83% North & Central America, 68% Europe] Family farming is the main source of production for staple crops [e.g. rice]

Participatory COMMUNICATION FOR DEVELOPMENT (COMDEV)[integrating community media, rural radio, mobile phones, low-cost ICTs]can maximize impact of rural development initiatives by facilitating:

ACCESS TO AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION SOCIAL LEARNING - KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE SHARING STAKEHOLDER ENGANGEMENT & PARTICIPATION IN DECISION-MAKING

EX: Up to 30% income increase for farmers accessing agricultural & market information services via mobile phone and low-cost ICTs

Since early 70s FAO leads UN efforts in the field of rural ComDev to meet the information needs of rural stakeholders and family farmers
