It presents the role of rural communication services to advance family farming, giving special attention to the International Year of Family Farming #IYFF14, as well as the International Forum on Communication and Community Media for Family Farming that FAO will host in October 2014.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF FAMILY FARMING --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY FARMING includes all family-based agricultural activities [agriculture, forestry, fisheries, pastoral production, aquaculture] Over 500 of the 570 million farms worldwide are family-owned Family farmers are responsible for at least 56% of agricultural production They work on a significant portion of the worlds farming land [e.g. 85% Asia, 62% Africa, 83% North & Central America, 68% Europe] Family farming is the main source of production for staple crops [e.g. rice] RICE PLANTAINS COFFEE COTTON FAO OFFICE FOR PARTNERSHIPS, ADVOCACY AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT (OPC) 3. INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF FAMILY FARMING --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY FARMERS run crop-diversified agricultural systems make sustainable use of natural resources preserve traditional food products contribute to a balanced diet safeguard the worlds agro-biodiversity UN proclaimed 2014 as the INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF FAMILY FARMING (IYFF) to celebrate the importance of family farming for eradicating poverty and improving global food security FAO OFFICE FOR PARTNERSHIPS, ADVOCACY AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT (OPC) 4. WHY COMMUNICATION IS KEY FOR FAMILY FARMING? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Participatory COMMUNICATION FOR DEVELOPMENT (COMDEV) [integrating community media, rural radio, mobile phones, low-cost ICTs] can maximize impact of rural development initiatives by facilitating: ACCESS TO AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION SOCIAL LEARNING - KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE SHARING STAKEHOLDER ENGANGEMENT & PARTICIPATION IN DECISION-MAKING EX: Up to 30% income increase for farmers accessing agricultural & market information services via mobile phone and low-cost ICTs Since early 70s FAO leads UN efforts in the field of rural ComDev to meet the information needs of rural stakeholders and family farmers FAO OFFICE FOR PARTNERSHIPS, ADVOCACY AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT (OPC) 5. ADVANCING FAO PRIORITIES THROUGH COMDEV --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Advocacy communication to enable rural peoples access to information and social mobilization on key rural issues 2. Technical advice and capacity development support to FAO Strategic Objectives for the design and implementation of ComDev strategies and projects 3. Policy dialogue to mainstream ComDev policies and the provision of INCLUSIVE & DEMAND-DRIVEN RURAL COMMUNICATION SERVICES XIII UN Interagency Roundtable on ComDev [16-18 Sep 2014] Mainstreaming ComDev in policies and programmes - Enabling social inclusion to support food and nutrition security, resilient livelihoods and family farming Int. Forum on ComDev & Community Media for Family Farming [28-29 Oct 2014] FAO OFFICE FOR PARTNERSHIPS, ADVOCACY AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT (OPC) 6. GLOBAL - Radio programs [EN/FR/SP] on IYFF, the importance of family farming and the contribution of communication & community media Broadcast worldwide through AMARCs network of 4,000 radios Potential audience of 10 million listeners REGIONAL - Regional focus on family farming issues, policies and priorities. Radios invited to produce own programs in local languages Campaign conducted through REGIONAL COMDEV PLATFORMS in: Asia and the Pacific [COMDEV ASIA] Latin America [ONDA RURAL] Africa [YENKASA AFRICA] FAO OFFICE FOR PARTNERSHIPS, ADVOCACY AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT (OPC) ADVOCACY COMMUNICATION THROUGH COMMUNITY MEDIA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IYFF awareness campaign in partnership with AMARC [ THE WORLD ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY RADIO BROADCASTERS ] 7. TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE: RURAL COMMUNICATION SERVICES --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Demand-driven services using ComDev methods and tools to improve farmers access to and use of agricultural knowledge FIELD STORY: BANGLADESH Participatory communication planning [national & local level] Capacity development in ComDev and radio broadcasting Set-up of Krishi Radio - My Radio, My Voice Daily broadcasts in local languages on agriculture, livestock, fisheries, science, women, children, youth and indigenous issues Hundreds of local farmers regularly tuning in and participating in live discussions Local appropriation [e.g. Mahasen response] FAO OFFICE FOR PARTNERSHIPS, ADVOCACY AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT (OPC) 8.
