Windows® 7 End of Life Support How to ease the pain of migrating to Windows 10 Submitted by Paul R. Montenero, Stay In Contact LTD

As I’m sure you are aware of by now Microsoft® Windows 7 operating system will be ending its extended support as of January 14, 2020. Having a plan of action can reduce or prevent security risks, downtime and future problems for your home or business. Knowing how to keep your PC and network safe is part of help-ing you keep your business up and running. Below are some examples of how without the Microsoft Window 7 extended support, you could be putting your business at risk for viruses and hacking:

If you use QuickBooks®, Sage® or Lacerte® software, it may not be updata-

ble if you are not using a secured version of Windows.

Medical Software (i.e EZ Dental®, Dentrix®, e-Prescribe®) will stop working

and updating because they will require you to protect patient data.

    Credit Card Processing (i.e. Authorize.net®, Square®, Clover®, and others)

will not process credit cards if the system isn’t updated and secure.

Online banking, and email providers (i.e. Gmail® and Yahoo®) will not func-tion correctly or log in. Security certificates are essential to website authentici-

ty and proving information that it’s operated by its true owners.

Antivirus and Malware software will not work effectively on Window 7 oper-ating system leaving potential “holes” that can allow hackers to access your system with viruses that can steal vital company data and erase important files and folders. Visiting an unprotected website can infect your computer with ransomeware. Ransomware locks you out of everything on your PC, in-

    cluding personal photos and documents.

Support for Internet Explorer® on a Windows 7 device will also be discontin-

    ued effective January 14, 2020.

What can you do? You can start by figuring out migration options that make sense for your business. My clients have been notified about the end of Microsoft Windows 7 support and, I am presently working with them on upgrading options based on their business needs. It’s important to understand that by not upgrading to Windows 10 operat-ing system, you could be putting your computer and network at risk for viruses and hacking.

Stay in Contact has been providing computer solutions for over 9 years. Our goal is to help clients increase productivity. I can show you how the new software will speed up your computer and keep your business running. If you have any ques-tions on upgrading to Windows 10 or any other service questions, please contact my office. Paul Montenero 516.864.1994 Website: www.stayincontact.us

Understanding Tax Terms: Contemporaneous Records Why should you care? Submitted by Suzanne LoBiondo, CPA

If you have problems getting to sleep at night and you turn to the IRS tax code for help, you might find some vocabulary that is very foreign to you. One of the more uncommon words used by the IRS is the term "contemporaneous." So what does it

mean and why should you care?

    Contemporaneous defined

According to the IRS it means the records used to support a claim on your tax re-turn are created and originated at the same time as your claimed deduction. In other words, if you realize that you forgot to get a receipt for something, you are

out of luck if you try to get one at a later date.

    Not fair!

Perhaps you know you had the expense, but you simply forgot to get a receipt. You can cry foul, but time and again the IRS has had tax courts uphold their elimi-nation of a taxpayer's deduction for lack of contemporaneous documentation.

Here are some areas where contemporaneous is especially important:

    Charitable contributions

Business deductions for expenses and capital purchases

    Mileage logs

    Tip records

    Gambling losses

    Business travel expenses

    Hobby losses

The donation of vehicles, boats and planes is often the most cited area where lack of contemporaneous documentation is a problem. This is because this type of do-nation has a high estimated market value that changes from month to month. But timely, written acknowledgement from the charitable organization is also required

for any donation of $250 or more.

    What you need to know

Always get a receipt. Before you leave a donated item, always ask for a re-ceipt. In the case of a vehicle, make sure the charitable organization gives you a 1098-C fully filled out. In addition, make sure the organization uses your ve-hicle or is a qualified charitable group that allows you to take the full market

    value of your donation.

If you forget, call right away. As soon as you realize a confirmation or receipt is missing, call to get one sent to you. Request that the receipt be dated as of

the date of the service or activity.

Think tax year. Understanding the definition of contemporaneous is important, because it is not always precisely defined. If the documentation is received in

the same year as the donation or transaction, you are usually in good shape.

Keep a log. Many transactions require the correct documentation at the time the activity occurred. This is true with deductible mileage, gambling loses and tip

income. So keep a log of your activities when they occur.

Wait to file. To meet the IRS definition of contemporaneous, the receipt or acknowledgement must be received the earlier of either: when you file your tax return OR the due date (including extensions) of your tax return. This is particu-larly true with charitable contributions. So if you want to play it safe, do not file

until all documentation is in hand.

    Suzanne LoBiondo, CPA (516) 791-1303.

    AAA Farmingdale Grand Opening

Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce was proud to be on hand to help celebrate the grand opening of AAA’s Farmingdale location at 915 Broadhollow Road. Photo courtesy of Bill Moseley/BBA Photography.

AAA Farmingdale Branch Opening Remarks of Brian E. Crossley, Senior Vice President, Operations, NY/NJ

AAA is one of the most well-known and respected brands in the world. For 116 years, AAA has worked diligently to help make driving in the United States safe, efficient and pleasurable. Created in 1902 to help establish and organize a sys-tem of roads and common-sense laws related to driving, AAA has evolved to of-fer a host of services to our members as their needs expanded. In the 1920s, we began to offer roadside assistance for those who suffered breakdowns in the notoriously unreliable cars of the day. That service expanded to the point where today we will jump-start your car, change your flat tire, put a new battery in your vehicle if you need one. If you lock yourself out we’ll get you back in. We will bring you fuel if you run out of gas, we will tow you if that’s what you need and we can even take you to a repair shop that we have certified as being qualified to repair your vehicle. We also can help you if you’re riding a motorcycle or bi-cycle. But we offer far more than just automotive services. We are full service insurance provider with coverage for your vehicle, home and your life. We are the nation’s largest leisure travel agency. We can book your trip, foreign or domestic, air tour or cruise, give you maps and Tour Books, show you how to get to your destination with a customized TripTik, and make reservations at a AAA Diamond-rated dis-counted hotel. We also can provide you with discount tickets for theme parks,

movies and other attractions. If you need to get your vision tested for your driv-er’s license renewal, well, we can do that too. ALL these services, and more, are available at AAA branch offices. This is our third Long Island location and plans are underway to open a fourth branch in East Meadow. Long Island is especially important to us given the fact we have more than 288,000 members in Suffolk County and more than 291,000 members in Nassau and that is why we are opening this brand-new AAA branch office here in beauti-ful Farmingdale. In fact, with this branch right on the border of the two counties, it is uniquely positioned to serve members in both Nassau and Suffolk. We look forward to helping with all your automotive, travel and insurance needs for at least another 116 years…

    The Power of Free Publicity

Roberta Perry of ScrubzBody™ Skin Care Products was the guest speaker at

our June luncheon meeting at Vespa Italian Kitchen and Bar.

In 2005, at 43, owner Roberta Perry headed for the kitchen and played like a “mad chemist” to create her own exfoliating products. With lots of research and trial and error, she mixed up different combinations of botanical oils and came up with a winner. She brought in her sister, who has since passed, and together

they started ScrubzBody™, in 2006, in Roberta's home.

The business quickly moved to a renovated garage and then to a small manufac-turing/store front, in Bethpage, NY in 2011. They moved to a larger space in 2014 and are thrilled to now be in Farmingdale. After all these years, the com-pany is proud of the fact that their products are still handcrafted with love in small batches. They host Make Your Own ScrubzBody™ Scrub parties for kids of all ages. They sell retail, private label and wholesale. They donate to 6 chari-ties, on a regular basis, with different scents of our products that give back, and

they co-hosted The Breast of Everything for 10 years.

Most recently, ScrubzBody™ Skin Care Products was featured on Bravo’s Sell It Like Serhant! You can view the featured videos (yes, two videos!) on

    www.bravotv.com/sell-it-like-serhant

Roberta shared some secrets of her success. She is a pro at getting free publici-ty and attributes much of this to using HARO (Help a Reporter Out) to build rela-

    tionships.

Do yourself a favor and check out their website, www.HelpAReporter.com, or even better, visit Roberta at ScrubzBody, 245 Main Street, Farmingdale and

purchase a copy of her informative book, “The Power of Free Publicity”.
