Farmington Central High School Requirements22.5 Credits Is Required for Graduation

All of the above courses, except PE, count as 1/2 credit per semester if completed with a passing grade. PE counts as 1/4 credit per semester.

When these requirements are completed, you will have 16 credits. The remaining 6.5 credits can be met with electives of your choice.

AGRICULTURE

6101 Intro to Agriculture IndustriesPrerequisite: NoneLength of Course: One (1) yearCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semester Open to: AllAs first year students, you will have the opportunity to study various aspects of livestock, including beef, hogs, sheep and dairy. You will learn basic management skills in growing corn and soybeans. We are using computers in many aspects of our agriculture program. For those who are interested in shop work, you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of interesting woodworking and welding projects. Each year we go on field trips such as Farm Progress Show and Peoria Farm Show. We participate in many contests such as livestock judging, Ag Mechanics and public speaking to name a few.

6102 Agriculture SciencePrerequisite: Intro to Agriculture IndustriesLength of Course: One (1) year plus summer projectCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to 10th, 11th, and 12th The students spend much of their time in study of advanced livestock management and feeding as well as the many aspects of crop production. The various types of nutrients in feed are explained as well as developing balanced rations for all different types of livestock. In the area of crops, soils, fertilizers and herbicides are explained to determine the best approved practices that may be applied to each crop. Selecting, purchasing, planting, harvesting, and marketing are all discussed in connection with corn. Each student continues to work in the FFA, plans a program of work and experience in the area of Ag Mechanics. This course meets the science requirement.

6205 Introduction to Horticulture SciencePrerequisite: NoneLength of Course: One (1) semesterCredit granted one-half (1/2)Open to: AllIn ornamental horticulture, you will have the opportunity to learn the basic skills in the various fields of horticulture. Emphasis will be placed on the propagating of plants, transplanting, cuttings, grafting, growing of garden crops, bulbs, plants and flowers. Included will be experience in potting plants with proper soil Medias, fertilizing and watering. Turf growing and maintenance will include types of grasses, fertilizing and watering techniques. A brief introduction will be included in the area of landscaping management and floral design.

Power mechanics is designed to provide skills, knowledge, and experience in the field of small engine repair and overhaul. Engines will be covered with work in specific areas of compression, ignition, combustion, maintenance, adjustment and overhauling. The course is designed as a preliminary course to learn the basics of engines for those students who attend Junior College automobile or tractor technology programs as well as those students who desire a good working knowledge of the engines they may have at home.

Students have the opportunity to learn management skills in Agri-business field or in a farming situation. Basic management skills and forms such as cash flow sheets, balance statements, net worth statements, profit and loss statements, land use, livestock programs, cropping systems, machinery size, capital requirements, insurance, fertilizer needs, and farm building are planned. The studying and analyzing of farm records allow the student to recognize how he or she can improve his Ag business operations. Agriculture law and basic economic principles are studied to advance with today’s agriculture technology. Many of the management skills above are studied on computer software to meet the ever-increasing knowledge and technology that people in agriculture must have to be more highly successful. Shop work includes study of electricity and writing of electrical exercises and electrical controls used on the farm in agri-business.

6137 Natural Resources and Conservation ManagementPrerequisite: NoneLength of Course: One (1) yearCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to 10th, 11th and 12th

This course develops management and conservation skills in understanding the connection between agriculture and natural resources. Student knowledge and skills are developed in understanding natural resources and its importance; fish, wildlife, and forestry management and conservation; and exploring outdoor recreational enterprises. Hunting and fishing as a sport, growing and managing tree forests, and outdoor safety education will be featured. Career exploration will be discussed including: park ranger, game warden, campground manager, forester, conservation officer, wildlife manager, and related occupations. Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus. Career exploration will focus on veterinarian, veterinary lab technicians, office lab assistant, small animal production, research lab assistant, and animal nutrition lab technician. 6128 Welding Technology IPrerequisite: NoneLength of course: 1 semesterOpen to 10th, 11th, and 12th This course assists students in gaining the knowledge and developing the basic skills needed to be successful in welding technology. Units of instruction include arc, TIG and MIG welding, metallurgy, cutting metal using arc, plasma and oxy-gas. In addition, students learn basics of blueprint reading, precision measuring, layout, and production process planning.

6129 Electrical Systems 1Prerequisite: NoneLength of course: One semesterCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semester Open to 10th, 11th & 12th

This course provides experiences that prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills to install indoor and outdoor residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems and associated power transmission lines. The program includes instruction in electricity, safety procedures, wiring, insulation and grounding, schematic blueprint interpretation, equipment operation and maintenance, and applicable codes and standards. Specific program content includes but is not limited to electrical wiring, industrial hydraulics, introduction to pneumatic technology, understanding of local and national electrical codes, basic power transmission, and an introduction to motor controls.

6124 Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) 6125 Prerequisite: Concurrent Enrollment in an Agriculture Class6126 Length of Course: 1 Year6127 Credit: ¼

Open to 9 - 12This course is designed to establish knowledge and skills in various agricultural careers. Students will gain credit by establishing a project at their home, at a local business, or at their school usually after normal school hours. Example projects may include, but are not limited to working at a garden center, raising vegetables/grain/livestock, conducting agri-science experiments in a greenhouse, and training horses at a stable. Students will be required to verify their experiences by keeping written or computerized records including: business agreements, budgets, inventories, daily activities, hours worked, income and expenses, total earnings, depreciation, and net worth. SAE participation can lead to fulltime employment, scholarships, and awards through the FFA. In SAE II students are encouraged to add additional projects, experiences, scope, and growth involving managerial and decision making skills in addition to the requirements of SAE I.

8116 Beginning ArtPrerequisite: NoneLength of Course: One (1) yearCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to: AllA basic and varied introductory art course including experience in drawing with many media, watercolor painting and art appreciation, with an emphasis on creative expressions and student growth in observation, art knowledge and technical skills.

8117 Advanced ArtPrerequisite: At least a C in Art 1Length of Course: One (1) yearCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to 10th, 11th, and 12th Knowledge and experience of Art 1 are the basics for this course. Advanced Art stresses refinement of skill and further development of expression, knowledge, and technique. It gives the student a chance to explore his or her interest in art in a variety of media including printmaking, sculpture, and acrylic painting. Students must have a strong knowledge and interest in art.

8115 CeramicsPrerequisite: Art 1Length of Course: One (1) semesterCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to 10th 11th & 12th Expand the art experience to include ceramics through a clay body. There will be a focus on hand building and throwing on the potter’s wheel. Student s will have 6-9 complete, built, fired, glazed pieces of artwork. Students should have a willingness to work with ceramic materials and be creative problem solvers. Students must have teacher recommendation or a B average in previous art classes.

7110 Accounting I Prerequisite: NoneLength of Course: One YearCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to 10th, 11th & 12th This course is of value to all students pursuing a business/accounting/computer vocation. Accounting principles are taught for a single proprietorship and partnerships through the accounting cycle. An automated accounting program is used. Spreadsheets and the Internet are utilized throughout 2nd semester.

7125 Business Concepts Prerequisite: NoneLength of Class: One (1) semesterCredit granted one-half (1/2) Open to: AllThis course will provide students with knowledge of procedures and administrative skills utilized in the day-to-day operations of a business. Students will also learn the roles of the various individuals needed to operate a business and how these roles are interrelated. Topics to be covered include etiquette/ behavior in the business environment, client/customer relations, personnel management, and related workplace skills. Students will also study the promotion and distribution of goods and services. This will include methods and procedures for gathering, analyzing and disseminating of information to facilitate marketing decisions. Also covered in this class will be planning and budgeting, managing distribution systems, inventory management, processes involved with selling, strategies for determining pricing and risk management.

Computer Concepts and Software Applications is an orientation-level course designed to develop awareness and understanding of application software and equipment. Students will apply problem-solving skills to hands-on real-life situations using a variety of software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, database management, presentation software, web design and desktop publishing. Students will explore topics related to computer concepts, operating systems, telecommunications and emerging technologies. The course will provide students with skills for both employment and future educational opportunities.

Information Processing II is a skill level course with advanced features that focus on enhancing and expanding skills in Microsoft Office. Students will operate a computer to create, input, and update spreadsheets. Accuracy will be emphasized. Students will also gain skills in basic computer networking, programming language (Visual Basic), and future technologies. Students will learn to digitally produce and edit video projects. In addition to technical skills, course content will reflect integration of academic and workplace skills. Workplace skills as well as communication skills (thinking, listening, revising, editing, and speaking) will be taught and integrated throughout this course.

7112 Introduction to BusinessPrerequisite: None. Fulfills the Consumer Education RequirementLength of Course: One (1) semesterCredit granted one-half (1/2)Open to 11th & 12th Consumer Education is designed to prepare today’s students for effective worthwhile consumer citizenship. Students will explore and discuss their economic need, resources and how to best satisfy their unlimited wants within the limitations of their resources.

7114 Economics-Weighted CoursePrerequisite: None. Fulfills the Consumer Education requirement.Length of Course: One (1) semesterCredit granted one-half (1/2)Open to 11th & 12thEconomics is designed to provide the enriched student with an introduction to the basic principles of economics. This course involves the study of economic issues involved in the operation of a business enterprise. The course will start out with an overview of different economic systems to help students become aware of how the economies operate. The course will then focus on the specifics of a mixed, free-market economy and the role that private business and enterprise plays in sustaining the global economy. Topics that will be covered will be roles of consumers in business, opportunity and unit cost, raising capital, money management, long term/ short term debt, stock and stockholder issues, budgeting, saving, spending, investing and credit. Stock market simulations will also be utilized.

7102 Co-Op Work AM7103 Co-Op Work PM

Prerequisite: Acceptance into program. Students must take Introduction to Business or Economics to meet their Consumer Graduation Requirement. Length of Course: One (1) yearCredit Granted: One (1) per semesterOpen to 12th (Apply Spring of Junior Year)This program is designed to provide vocational training experiences through regular part-time employment. Through the training agreement, the student, employer and coordinator agree on the requirements of the program. The students are in class at least four periods per day. Through the training agreement, a format of individual learning experiences and job tasks to be undertaken at the job site will be cooperatively determined for each student. A minimum of 10 hours per week on-the-job training is required, with more hours possible. Students may apply for co-op

DRIVER EDUCATION, HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION5101 Driver Education

Prerequisite: Must Have Passed Eight (8) Courses the Preceding 2 SemestersLength of Course: One (1) QuarterCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) required for graduationOpen to: All

CLASSROOM:Offered to all students who are eligible according to the State of Illinois Rules and Regulations concerning Driver Education. This 9 week course of thirty (30) hours is designed to help young drivers develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become safe, low-risk, responsible drivers. In order of attain one-half of state law requirements towards obtaining a driver’s license, a student must pass 30 hours of classroom instruction. Students must also pass the Illinois Rules of the Road written test and the Illinois vision test in order to qualify for an Illinois Instruction Permit. ($20.00 fee to Secretary of State)

BEHIND THE WHEEL:Offered to all students who are eligible according to the State of Illinois Rules and Regulations concerning Driver Education and are enrolled in or have completed classroom. In order to attain one-half of state law requirements towards obtaining a driver’s license, a student must pass 6 hours of BTW driving and 6 hours of BTW observation. A $50.00 lab fee paid to Farmington Central High School is required before BTW will begin and before notification is made to the ISBE for driver’s license approval upon completion.

5110 HealthPrerequisite: NoneLength of Course: One (1) semesterCredit granted one-half (1/2)Open to all. Required for graduation. Recommended for 9th or 10th.Health is a semester course on the major aspects of maintaining a healthy mind, body and spirit. It is designed to develop and understanding of physical, emotional and social needs. It also promotes positive decision-making and abstinence education.

5105 Physical EducationPrerequisite: NoneLength of Course: One (1) semesterCredit Granted: One-fourth (1/4)Open to: All Students in PE will participate in various exercise programs aimed at increasing cardiovascular endurance, speed, agility and strength. This is strictly an exercise-based class.

Credit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to: 9th English 1 consists of grammar study, vocabulary study, and a study of literature appreciation, reading skills, study skills, and writing skills. The grammar study is designed to develop good language habits, both oral and written, that are important for everyday life, such as correct word usage, accurate spelling and punctuation, effective sentence structure and clear paragraph composition. Literature units include the novel, drama, short story, and nonfiction. Basic elements of each genre are explained and/or introduced. The program includes development of various types of paragraphs and essays with emphasis on mechanics, unity, and coherence through expository, persuasive and narrative writing. High School Library facilities are also introduced to the student.

1103 English 2Prerequisite: English 1 (Required for Graduation)Length of Course: One (1) yearCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to 10th English 2 consists of a further study in spelling, vocabulary, grammar and usage, and appreciation of literature. The grammar usage emphasizes phrases, clauses, and sentence structure. The program includes development of various types of paragraphs and essays with emphasis on mechanics, unity and coherence through expository, persuasive and narrative writing, with an introduction to MLA. Literature units include the novel, drama, short story and nonfiction. Emphasis is placed on the basic elements of each genre.

The reading is in American literature emphasizing an appreciation and understanding of our literary heritage. The grammar study includes sentence structure, verb usage, subject/ verb agreement, pronoun usage, phrase and clause structure, and punctuation. Writing units include summary writing, thesis development, MLA sourcing, topic sentence development, clear paragraph composition, thesis composition and research.

1107 English 4Prerequisite: English 3 (Required for Graduation)Length of Course: One (1) yearCredit Granted: One-half (1/2) per semesterOpen to 12thEmphasis is on development of student writing (analytical, creative, and research) through which students continue to work on grammar and mechanics throughout the year. Content organization and use of on-line and paper sources are emphasized in the writing assignments that parallel literature units. A survey of English literature gives the student a solid background in the origins and

1112 Advanced Communication (weighted)Prerequisite: CommunicationLength of Course: One (1) semesterCredit granted one-half (1/2)Open to 12th This course will be responsible for exposing students to a wide variety of communication concepts: Public Relations, Print Advertisement/Design Critique, Brand Messaging/Customer Experience, Media Content, Target Audiences, Inbound/Outbound Marketing/Web Based, and Television and Radio.
