Growing A StrongerFarmington


Arriving upon land west of theMississippi in 1798 – which was,at that time, part of the upperLouisiana Territory and underSpanish rule – was the Kentucky

native William Murphy. Murphy wassearching for the ideal site to relocate hisfamily, and as the tradition goes, with the aidof a local Indian he came to find a springnear the now-standing St. Francois CountyCourthouse. Deciding that this was anexcellent place to set up home, Murphyacquired a Spanish land grant, allowing himand his family to establish a settlementalong the St. Francois River.

In his travels back to Kentucky, Murphypassed away, leaving it up to his wife, SarahBarton Murphy, and their grown sons toestablish the settlement – which they didwhen arriving at the site around 1800.Named Murphy’s Settlement, Sarah BartonMurphy is known to have assembled thepremier Protestant Sunday School west ofthe Mississippi River. Due to Spanish lawbarring any religious services that were notof Roman Catholic tradition, Murphy and herstudents orchestrated the learning in secret.

A post office in Murphy’s Settlement openedin 1817, followed by the annexation of theland to the United States through theLouisiana Purchase – creating the state ofMissouri. With the advent of this, DavidMurphy made a contribution of 52 acres ofland for the installation of the county seat ofwhat was soon to be St. Francois County in1822. The name of the town, Farmington,was selected in 1825, with incorporation asa town granted in 1836 – soon becoming avillage 20 years later in 1856.

stretched from Pilot Knob to Ste. Genevieve.The road was built to transport supplies fromthe shipping facilities located along the river tothe mines and to move the mine’s iron ore tothe shipping facilities. The route was soontaken over by the St. Louis and Iron MountainRailroad.

The first public school was constructed in1870, and, in 1879, Farmington gained therecognition as a Fourth-Class City – anaccolade that was surpassed in 1981, whenFarmington became a Third-Class City.

Laying down roots more than two centuriesago, Farmington has certainly become aprosperous Midwestern city. Since its 1860population of 500, the city has transformedinto a community of more than 19,000. Itseconomic sector has continued to thrive andits educational institutions and medicalcenters maintain the highest level of quality.Holding tight to its values, residents andbusinesses take pleasure in living in “The Cityof Tradition and Progress.”

Transportationand Location

Farmington’s strategic location in southeastMissouri puts it within proximity to the majordowntown St. Louis market (69 miles), alongwith the conveniences of severaltransportation methods, making residential

and business commute trouble-free. More than 105miles of public streets wind through Farmington, inaddition to a regional airport and other public andprivate transportation services.

Farmington Regional Airport is a city-owned, public-use airport situated on approximately 170 acres ofland. Currently, the airport features a 75’ x 4,221’runway with 100’ displaced threshold on the southend, pilot controlled lighting, instrument approachesand self-serve or assisted fueling. In 2009, the cityconstructed a new terminal facility that offers 24-houraccess to a pilot’s lounge complete with vendingareas, shower facilities, laundry, flight planning centerand a conference room. Work on the parallel taxiway,connecting lanes and apron improvements arescheduled for completion. Expansions andimprovements are frequent at this community facility.

The Union Pacific Railroad owns east-west tracksextending from the main north-south line at Bismarckto Park Hills/Bonne Terre, in the northern developmentarea of Farmington, to Ste. Genevieve, andconnections to the Burlington Northern Railroad.Several sections have extensive sidings in place.

Utilized mostly by the area’s elderly and handicappedresidents, the Southeast Missouri TransportationService provides transport for those requesting theservice. The Southeast Missouri TransportationServices offers one bus solely for Farmington arearesidents, plus one bus that serves the entire county.

On top of all this, Farmington is home to a number ofadditional transportation services, including two taxiservices within the city – as well as a handful of othersthat lie within county lines – and services operated bysuch entities as nursing homes and medical centers.

There is so much to see and do inthis Southeast Missouri region –the biggest question is how andwhere to spend your day! Wineries,historic sites, cultural channels and

entertainment venues for the whole family canall be found in and near the Farmingtoncommunity.

Take part in tastings, enjoy a tour of thevineyards or just relax with some delicious foodand live music at one of the area’s manywineries. Within 20 minutes of downtown arenearly 10 wineries – great venues for friends,fun and relaxation.

History buffs can revel in the area’s interestinghistorical sites, including the Missouri MinesHistorical Site and the Fort Davidson StateHistoric Site. The Missouri Mines Historic Site,situated in Park Hills, is the site of an oldmilling complex that was utilized by the St. JoeMinerals Corporation during the time that thestate’s “Lead Belt” manufactured approximately80 percent of the U.S.’s mined lead.

In 1864, the now serene Arcadia Valley innearby Iron County was the site of the Battle ofPilot Knob. While en route to the St. Louisregion, Confederate Major General SterlingPrice and his army of 12,000 men attacked thepoorly protected Fort Davidson, a Union postof 1,450 men overseen by General ThomasEwing, Jr. During this large battle, theConfederates lost around 1,000 men. Patronstoday can view the preserved Fort Davidsonand Pilot Knob battlefield, along with the VisitorCenter, which is highlighted by exhibits, aresearch library and more. A picnic area andplayground are also available on-site.

For some performing arts entertainment,whether it be theatrical, musical or dance,make sure to visit the Centene Center. Thecenter is situated adjacent to the FarmingtonCivic Center and offers auditorium seating formore than 700. Small concerts, local dramaperformances and more can all be found here.

Farmington and its surroundingarea are full of recreationalopportunities, making it easy tofill a day with both active andpassive activities. The

Farmington Parks and RecreationDepartment oversees the area’s parksystem, provides sport offerings –including adult softball, baseball andsoccer – and hosts a number ofcommunity events.

In addition to the area’s largest festival,Farmington Country Days held annuallyin June, the Wiggle and Giggle FishingDerby, Harvest Night, WinterWonderland and other family activitieskeep life exciting.

Fifteen parks line the streets of thecommunity, offering sites for fishing,playgrounds, ball and soccer fields,tennis, volleyball and basketball courts,picnicking, barbecue and beautiful openspace. One park in particular isdedicated to skateboarders, in-lineskaters and BMX riders. The FarmingtonSkate Park, located at Long Park, is a25,000-square-foot course that isequipped with rails, ramps andobstacles.

The beginnings of the Farmington PublicLibrary have their roots in an “evening ofmusic and reading” organized by the UnitedDaughters of the Confederacy in 1915.“Reading Rooms” were first located in the

Tetley Building, second in the Farmington High Schooland then moved back to the Tetley Building. The libraryofficially opened in May 1916 with a collection of 150books, which grew to 1,600 books by 1917.

In April 1920, the library was moved for the fourth time tothe Farmer’s Bank Building. Plans were being made forthe fifth move to a new building, Long Memorial Hall,which was built as a tribute to William Dubart Long, apioneer of Farmington. When the building was nearlycomplete, a fire delayed the formal dedication, which tookplace October 31, 1924. Farmington Public Library washoused in Long Memorial Hall from October 1924 until itsmove to 108 W. Harrison St. in August 1980. Serviceshave gradually expanded to include not only books butmagazines, newspapers, large print books, audio bookson cassette and videos. Further expansion in servicesinclude participation in the interlibrary loan program,participation in the state’s Summer Reading Program forchildren, children’s story hours, copying services andaudio-visual equipment for loan, microfilm readers in thegenealogy department, computerized card catalog and

circulation system and equipment for the visuallyimpaired. A delivery service for the homebound has beenadded to the list of services provided by the library.

In 1977, a proposal for a new library was presented to theCity Council. From a dedicated group of Friends of theLibrary, members of the library board and a committedlibrarian, the final plan for a new facility took shape. Thecity allocated an amount for actual construction andarchitects’ fees, and the planning and steering committeebegan a fundraising campaign to furnish the building.

The present building housing the Farmington PublicLibrary officially opened to the public in August 1980. TheFarmington Public Library is dedicated to the memory ofWitten H. Ledbetter, devoted friend of the library, skillfuljournalist and dedicated mayor of Farmington.

The Farmington Public Library has grown from “ReadingRooms” to its own building of 8,000 square feet, from abook collection of 150 to a collection of more than 42,250volumes, from a beginning membership of 200 to morethan 10,000 today. With computer resources, a specialgenealogy area, kids areas and events for all ages, theFarmington Public Library is definitely more than just areading room!
