The Necessity of Learning Materials on Linking the Gap for Effective LearningBy: Grace Paculba - LRMDS Coordinator

Learning materials in the K-12 program, specifi cally in Grade 5 and Grade 11 is still insuffi cient. Two mean reasons are attributable

to it. Firstly the Mass training for teachers (MTOT) teaching grade 5 and grade 11 were just implemented and fi nished last summer. Secondly, specifi cation has been given to bidders for the t ext book call but none has met the specifi cation. With this, a DepEd Memo was sent from the central offi ce directing for the In house reproduction and distribution of grade 5 and grade 11 activity sheets learning resources by the Regional and Division offi ce for SY 2016-2017. Th e Bureau of Learning Resource (BLR) provided digital copies of the materials for reproduction. Learning materials are used to guide pupils/students multiple means of representation of concepts and multiple means of engaging concepts. With the implementation of the K-12, the necessity of learning materials support becomes very imminent. With the program we expect the learners to converge and have similar learning outcomes. Th e teachers are being challenged to produce greater similarity in learning outcomes despite great diversity in learner’s population. Th e new program added a bigger workload to education planning, infrastructure and support

materials. Increasing number of learners put pressure to the demand of more classroom and the urgently needed learning materials. Although learning can take place anywhere and in any place, sustained and effi cient learning oft entimes happen when suffi cient and appropriate learning resource materials are provided to the learners. Presently the entire national man power is directed towards the reproduction of learning materials for schools nationwide. Th e endeavour is the direct answer to the lack of learning materials for the grade 5 and grade 11.One of the important concern however is the timely and suffi cient reproduction. In the Division of El Salvador City, reproduction of learning materials is on full and priority scale. Materials in grade 5 and grade 11 levels are already reproduce and already distributed to the diff erent elementary and secondary schools within the Division. Th e task of reproduction is under the direct supervision of LRMDS. Oft en time’s gap in the continuity of reproduction and distribution occur because of the delay in the purchase of the needed supplies and the access and availability of learning resource copies for the Deped. With full reproduction, the Division will ultimately connect the gap of the necessity

Great Agents of Change(by: Analyn G. Fabria)

CHANGE!!!... this is the cry of majority who long for prosperity. Th ere will be more changes as days go by. It is

inevitable and is constant. Th ere are changes happening and being introduced not only in our ways of living but also in schools, in the place where we live and even around the world as we move on to the 21st Century. In our country, the present administration’s call for change has become louder and stronger. Many believed that our country will prosper and shine like a star if we will embrace changes. If we don’t changed, we will not grow and prosper. If we don’t grow, we are not really living. Th e big question is, WHO can be the best agent of change? Th e fact, that the president alone cannot make changes without his helpers. He needs best agents who could help him in his advocacy who can truly help people change from the inside-out. Making change needs infl uential

people as instruments. Th ese people are the TEACHERS! As moulders of young minds, they are the great agents who can change a student’s life. How can a teacher be a great agent of change? It’s not easy to change a student’s life, it takes a great teacher to do so. As the most infl uential role models for developing students, they are responsible not just for academic enrichment but as well as their well-being. Great teacher is an inspiration. Inspiring students is integral in ensuring their success. Students who are inspired by their teachers are motivated to accomplish amazing things. As great agents of change, teachers must be the trusted source of advice in weighing student’s important life decisions. Be modest in anyway because students oft en look to their teachers as mentors with experience and knowledge. Teachers who have the ability to touch the lives of students are indeed the teachers undoubtedly have the ability to change lives. With changed lives, we can change the world!

A Glimpse of Hope: A Teacher’s Undying Devotion“Professionalism: It’s not the job you do, it’s how you do the job!” –Anonymous

The professionalism of a person is not just measured with its education, achievements and awards, but is visibly seen through its

determination to handle work with dignity and honesty despite unexpected circumstances and intricate challenges. A teacher’s professionalism can be gauged when she experiences diffi culties but still manages to attain the goals set for the class with enthusiasm, optimism and zeal. Whatever problems that she has in home, a professional teacher can stand and uphold her vows as motivator and agent of change to make a diff erence to the lives of the learners; inspiring the people who have witnessed the undying eff ort and willpower of the teacher through its remarkable deeds in the school and in the community. Mrs. Esterlita L. Jangao, Master Teacher I of Cogon National High School, has showed valor and resiliency as she fought the test of life. She has dedicated almost 30 years of her life as diligent and motherly teacher whom has devoted her time and endeavor to extend knowledge to the young. She was fi rst assigned in Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental despite the fact that she has her residency in Barra, Opol. Th e call for work and professionalism made her decide to leave home to address proximity and to do her job productively. Th ere were times that she couldn’t attend the needs of her only son because she was kilometers away from him. As a mother, nothing is more painful than to feel hopeless when you can’t be there for your child when his sick and lonely; because you can’t leave your children in the class—your students. Despite such, Mrs. Jangao was able to handle pressure with grace as she doubled her eff ort to at least provide for the family and at the same time endowed students with the education they deserve. “Ester, you are positive with stage 2 breast cancer!” Th ese were the hurtful words spoken by a doctor as Mrs. Jangao was informed that her breast should be removed due to a malignant breast tumor. She couldn’t explain what she felt during that time as the doctor’s words became an empirical horror. She wasn’t able to sleep the night aft er she knew her situation and thought that it could be her doom. But the next morning, as she saw her students waiting

for her in the lobby, she was enlightened that God has a bigger purpose for her and no amount of illness could shake her faith. Miraculously, she survived and was cancer free aft er several treatments. At long last aft er eighteen years, Mrs. Jangao was fi nally transferred to Cogon National High School, El Salvador Division where she could spend time with her family. Her joy cannot be contained as she realized that she‘s already near home. But trials have their own way of squeezing every hope we have when her husband had an accident and was paralyzed for a couple of years. Bravely, Mrs. Jangao faced these circumstances with her strong faith with God and still continued to inspire students in spite of heartaches. Her situation at home didn’t aff ect her job and was consistently active in school activities like journalism and reading program. Th e tiring task in the school didn’t bother this great teacher as she still does house chores like painting their own walls and repairing furniture. She is not just an English teacher; she is a master in craft s like cooking and sewing as she exposed these skills in her T.L.E class. Mrs. Jangao’s husband was recovering from stroke and their son was about to fi nish his criminology course. Everything was already on its place; she has her Master Teacher I position and was very contended with her present journey. Just when things run smoothly, alas, Mrs. Jangao underwent another medical procedure in her lungs due to high risk pneumonia. Aft er several tests, a heartbreaking diagnosis was given to her; she has stage 4 lung cancer! A terminal stage! An impeccable horror struck her again… Th ere are times that Mrs. Jangao feels like giving up, but seeing her students long for knowledge gave her hope to go on with life. Despite what she’s carrying, she never loses the fervor to teach her students and to entice her colleagues to sustain the magic in teaching. Her professionalism showed her great passion for education and undying devotion for the young. She is indeed a manifestation of a motherly teacher who endures the battle of life without compromising the standards set for the learners. She is a person who found purpose in her vocation, because as the saying goes “Allow your passion to become your purpose, and it will be one day become your profession”.

ALS Volunteer TeacherBy: Romel C. Abang

Behind of our every success in Alternative Learning System, there are unpaid, innovative, inspiring, equip, and God fearing volunteer

teacher. Who passionately love to teach those OSY and OSA, which lost their valuable opportunity to learn. These teachers extend and stretch their time for the learners vacancy within a week and most of the learners chose the weekends which supposed to be their time for the family and for the church. Before I became a regular DEPED teacher I’m also one of them, for almost three years of being a volunteer teacher I’ve learned in life, the community and being more than a teacher. It’s not easy to be an ALS volunteer teacher you will sacrifice your time, invest emotion, take the heat of the sun, the drops of the rain and the money of your pocket. They are called a missionary, a friend and a hero to fulfill the dreams of every OSY and OSA Filipinos. El Salvador City has 15 barangay to be served and its barangay there is a volunteer teacher assign to a certain area.

His apprenticeship experience as OIC, Regional Director of DepED in Region X was short-lived. However, it was resumed in his original place of love, Region XII, where he served the internship as Regional Director on Aug. 28, 2013 to Dec. 3, 2014. Because of the early retirement of our former Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Cora T. Asa, our keynote speaker holds the position of being our Concurrent Schools Division Superintendent of El Salvador City Division.

Our keynote speaker spent his early childhood education in Panay Elementary School, Sto. Niño, South Cotabato in 1976-1981; his secondary years at Notre Dame of Sto. Niño, South Cotabato in 1981-1985; and his college life at Notre Dame of Marbel University, Koronadal City, taking up Bachelor of Philosophy in 1985-1989. We learn that he took

up this course when he was a seminarian intending to proceed to the priesthood. But becoming a priest may not really be his calling. With this change of life’s direction, his love for teaching was again so inviting that he proceeded, instead, to take up master’s degree at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in 1992-1996 where he fi nished Master of Arts in Education major in Guidance and Counseling. Th at is why, if you can spend time with him, you will really discover that you are already immersed with his amazing and though-provoking insights, wonderfully spoken wisdom which you can make use of in your journey through life. His desire to learn more and his passion for education did not stop. He fi nished Bachelor of Laws at Mindanao State University, Marawi City, from 1997-2001. And to top it all, in the fi eld of campus journalism, we are not mistaken in choosing him our keynote speaker, not only that he is our overall manager, but more fi ttingly, his rightful connection and involvement in our activity today. I say fi tting, appropriate and the right choice, because he was even an awardee in campus journalism when he was recognized as Outstanding School Paper Adviser of the Philippines in 1995.
