• “Totalitarian rule where all loyalty lies with the state”

• “A political system where the nation or the race of people in the nation are more important than the individual”

• Individual rights andfreedoms are a threat

FASCISM OR TOTALITARISM?

• Totalitariansim = Dictatorship• Most fascist states are ruled by a dictator• Not all dictators are fascist

*These theories, specifically Communism and Fascism, are completely different theories that are bitterly opposed; however they exhibit the same behavior

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

• Italy = 1st fascist state (Mussolini)• Comes from latin• “Fascis” – Ancient Roman symbol of STRENGTH, UNITY,

and GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITY• Literally, bundle (Get it?)

CHARACTERISTICS

• Ultra-nationalistic• Ethnic and physical superiority of the party in power

• Single, charismatic leader• Absolute national unity• The state first, over all else.

• Masters of manipulation• Mass media

• Private economic goals not important • Hate other forms of government• Especially communism (interesting, very interesting…)

• Military expansion & Police State

WHAT ENCOURAGES FASCISM TO GROW?

• A depressed economy• High unemployment• Dissatisfied workers, unsympathetic factory

owners• Diminished national pride• Lack of confidence in traditional political

leadership• Young, radical groups w/ an alternative• Former WWI soldiers, children of soldiers

• PROPAGANDA!
