December 4, 2011 - Dark Victory

For celebrities Kate Winslet, Mariah Carey, and Marion Cotillard, Deborah Lippmann (below) has become the go-to (or come-here) manicurist for red-carpet events and fashion photo shoots. Her eponymous nail-color and nail-care lines have included collaborations with some of her most famous clients: “We did Sarah Smile with Sarah Jessica Parker, Believe with Cher, and Lara’s Theme with Lara Stone,” says Lippmann. Edge of Glory, a polish-and-glitter combo concocted with Lady Gaga for Gaga’s Workshop at Barneys New York, is her most recent tag-team effort. Like Ms. G, it’s an attention-getter: “A holographic glitter transforms the color, depending on how it’s angled,” says Lippmann of the pearlescent 3-D effect. “It’s beautiful and edgy at the same time.” Gaga was by all accounts the perfect co-conspirator. “When I did her nails for the ‘Born This Way’ video, she gave the looks names, like Host and Parasite. She envisioned nails that I never even thought about before” (barneys.com; $45).

This article is about celebrity nail stylist, Deborah Lippmann. It outlines some of her previous work as well and discusses her upcoming collaboration with Lady Gaga. I had actually seen another article about the polishes coming out on the market a couple months ago, but did not make the connection. The polishes are metallic and create interesting three-dimensional effects in certain lighting and Lady Gaga was one of the first celebrities to endorse it. The polish is quite expensive in terms of what the average person would pay for a bottle of polish (the last time I checked they were being sold for approximately 15 euros each in London and hadn’t appeared on American markets let, but have since shown up on the nails of many American celebrities. I find the concept quite exciting though and can’t wait until the technology is adapted into a more mainstream, affordable brand. As someone that doesn’t typically wear nail polish, I’m not willing to pay the expensive price tag for the polish, but many people would and it’s creating quite a trend in the specified market.

December 9, 2011 - A New Setback For AT&T

In a setback for AT&T Inc., the Justice Department told a U.S. court Friday that it wants to postpone its antitrust challenge to AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile USA.The request, if approved by Judge Ellen S. Huvelle, would delay a trial slated for February. AT&T and T-Mobile have said quick resolution of the court case is essential or the proposed $39 billion merger will fall apart. The deal is already in trouble, in part because the Federal Communications Commission expressed serious objections last month and said it wanted to call a trial-like hearing to review the issue. That prompted the ...

This article discusses AT&T’s recent struggle to buy out T-Mobile. AT&T has been in the news for a while with their aggressive marketing antics and though they have a lot to lose from this merger not progressing, the FCC is finally stepping in and telling AT&T that they are growing too large and acquiring T-Mobile would create too much of a monopoly over service. Many media giants have been accused of this over the last few years. Time Warner and Comcast have both been criticized as growing too large and disallowing competition from smaller businesses in there bid to acquire other companies. It’s good to see the FCC finally stepping up and limiting AT&T’s power because I personally have felt like many of these companies have been getting away with a lot more than they should in terms of limiting the choices consumers have when choosing such services. Until now, the FCC has kind of turned it’s back on consumers and let many of these companies go on existing, so I’m keeping an eye on the progression of this merger and whether or not it will actually be allowed to go through at some point.

December 9, 2011 - Top Trends of 2011

Fashion is certainly guilty of being ephemeral. One day, hemlines have risen to micromini proportions; a week later everyone is wearing floor-grazing maxi skirts—and then, just when you thought nineties minimalism had officially made a comeback, a print explosion suddenly takes over the runways. This transitory nature is documented each month in the “Flash: Talking Fashion” section of Vogue—where we dissect the most compelling trends from the runways and feature the real women who wore them best. As the year draws to a close, we look back at each issue from 2011 and highlight the top twelve fashion and accessories trends that left a lasting impression on us.

This article highlights several of 2011’s trends, not all of which I noticed being hugely prevalent. I noticed stripes, granny plaid, reptile skins, and grunge to be major trends, but I was not as familiar with things like the bright shades of red and purple, polished garments in light colors and rippled fabric. I did find the observations very spot on and varied across many genres, high fashion and celebrities a like. I do think some of the trends, such as the plaid and stripes really aren’t trends of 2011 because they’re staples of fashion and appear season after season.

November 3, 2011 - Comment on Women’s Wear Fall 2011

I think that women’s wear lately has been increasingly bold. Bright colors, high hems, low necklines, grunge, fur and leather, etc. There are times when trends tend to have a softness and fashion is more reserved and quietly beautiful, but I think boldness is at a all time high right now. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Rhianna have popularized heavy, texturally interesting clothing heavy influenced by grunge culture. Accesses are heavy and chunky and made in textiles that are tactile and create interesting surprising combinations when compared.

November 26, 2011 - 5 Trends

1. Mustard Yellow - I found this color everywhere, moreso than past falls. It’s on bags, clothes, bedding, bakeware, etc, populary paired with rust orange.

2. Plaid - Plaid has been popular for many seasons, but I’ve noticed it coming into hardlines lately too. It’s a popular print for clothing and textiles, but I saw it on lamps, mirrors, and dishes among many other things.

3. Stripes - Stripes are also everywhere: mugs, clothing, notebook prints, press-on nails. 4. Glittery Things - I saw a lot of sequins and glitter details on scrapbooks, clothing, picture frames, dog collars, and all sorts of other things. They were very popular last fall as well, but I think it’s still popular.5. Floral motif - This was an interesting one since I think florals are typically only used as spring décor, but lately fall themed florals and darker prints have been popular prints clothing, linens and pillows, and home décor.

I couldn’t find anything about the florals on WGSN, but it did mention plaids and stripes as being popular this season and reiterates their popularity from season to season. Metalics were also mentioned as being a widespread trend, metals, in general and sequins. I didn’t find mustard yellow specifically, but I’ve seen it on other trend places specifically and expect it’s probably on the site somewhere because it has exploded this season.

November 29, 2011 - Predict 3 Fashion Trends

1. Pattern-Blocking - Similar in concept to color blocking, I think combining different contrasting patterns to create visual and textural interest will be even bigger than it is right now.

2. Tribal Influence - Embroidery, texture, earth tones, tribal influence will be more popular than it is right now.

11

Page 12: Fashion Business Journal

3. Acid Yellow - I’ve seen a lot of the really bright, canary yellow. I don’t much care for it but it’s cropping out in numerous shows.

October 14, 2011 - Sephora and H&M

Sephora - Going into Sephora is an exhilarating experience for me and I whole heartedly believe much of the store’s appeal to be in their massive, brightly colored displays. Everything is visually appealing and displayed in a manner which encourages the customer to pick up items, test out certain items, but never grow bored in the store. There is so much visual stimulus, I could easily spend much longer in the store than I otherwise would and I don’t actually wear much make-up, however, the option of choice is quite exciting and the bright colors give even an adult the feeling that they’re in a candy store. And for many young women, a store like Sephora filled with all types of beautiful make-up is just as exciting of an experience.

15

Page 16: Fashion Business Journal

H&M - I thought this display at H&M was particularly cute. It solved a problem I see at many accessory displays that consists of people not really knowing how to sell accessories together. So I think this display not only allows the customer to envision the pieces with different outfits, but the accessories themselves together and encourages more sales in a variety of colors.

There are two shows I’ve been watching lately that I think are currently and will continue to inspire fashion, Pan Am and Madmen. Both are set in the 1960s and inspire a pristine mod fashion that comes in strong opposition to the main stream fashion popular right now. I think returning to the red lip, siren era of glamour will be the sophistication fashion will crave after the harshness of grunge influenced musicians being so popular right now. And I think some celebs are flirting with it, but I’d love old Hollywood glamour to come back and fashion to embrace pretty, frilly things again. Katy Perry and Florence Welch are both celebs I think are really embodying this trend.

Designer: Roberto CavalliSeason: Fall 2011Carried by: Nordstrom, specialty boutiquesCharacterized by: Metalics, bright jewel tones, black, embroidery and knit, texture, fur.

I think my favorite aspect of the collection is all the texture and visual interest. Not a single piece is boring. They’re all very beautiful and detailed and all have interesting detail design and fabric manipulation techniques. This particular outfit has a lot of textural interest, velvet, knitting and jewel toned colors, as well as black and beading. There is a lot going on, by the elements all work together to form a very harmonious piece.

Responsibilities of a Fashion Designer - A fashion designer must be able to keep up with current trends but be able to predict future ones as well. They must be able to anticipate the needs of the consumer and understand the effects of culture on fashion and anticipate the desires of their consumers. They must be constantly sketching and coming up with new ideas to offer consumers new options and more choices and conveniences. They must work with pattern makers to communicate their ideas correctly and convince buyers that their collections are worth investing in as well as several other tasks.

Responsibilities of a Buyer - A buyer must also be able to anticipate the needs of their consumers and bridge the gap between the designer and the customer. They must have a keen eye for trends and a astute concept of who their customer is and what their needs are. They must also be able to anticipate financial needs and anticipate what will be purchased and in what type of quantity so the company will not outsell, but will also not be left with enormous overstock.

Responsibilities of a Product Development Manager -A Product developer must be able to plan and effectively locate prime locations to sell product. They must have an understanding of sales and marketing and be able to make wise business choices and it is their job to ensure that products are successfully advertised, produced, and sold.

December 9, 2011 - 4 Fashion Don’ts

1. Winter + Summer Ensembles - UGG boots with shorts, winter jackets and mini dresses, fir hats and short skirts. It looks terrible. Stick to one season.

2. Socks and Boots - It just doesn’t look good, especially in some of these photos that show it with fishnets. It looks a little stripper.

20

Page 21: Fashion Business Journal

3. Super revealing clothing - Clothing can be sexy without being too revealing. Generally, one should emphasize only one “sexy” feature.

4. Skunk hair - Adding subtle highlights to one’s hair can add interest and make someone look younger, however, the heavy bleach blond/black combo looks trashy and unpolished unless it is more subtle.

December 9, 2011 - Careers

Patternmaker - I would be able to utilize my pattern making skills to drape and create patterns. I’m a design major, and this would be utilizing my course work to enter a fun and exciting career.

Jewelry Designer - I’ve worked superficially with jewelry making before and I find it quite fun. It would be an interesting means of utilizing design knowledge in a quickly expanding field.

Garment Restoration - I think it would be great fun to work in garment restoration and preservation because I find vintage clothing quite interesting and beautiful.
