Celebrities shape and influence fashion trends. Famous people have always shaped fashion trends throughout history and this is still true today. What is fashion? Fashion is just wearing what is considered popular or hip. Why are certain things considered hip or popular? It is usually because famous people or celebrities have been seen wearing these things.

With America entrenched in a highly controversial war with Vietnam, a peace-preaching youth movement swept across the country. As the 1960s came to a close, both sexes favored fluorescent colors, psychedelic prints, bell-bottom jeans, fringed vests, fringed skirts and T-shirts that became walking billboards of protest. Hippies tied back their long hair with bandanas and braids, donned peace signs and love beads around their necks and walked around in sandals or barefooted in protest of the war.

These factors can accelerate or inhibit fashion changes however, when a country is isolated or when political relations are poor. Trade between countries become limited or nonexistent. In America, each state across the country has consumer protection laws in place, with the goal of preventing businesses from using misleading marketing campaigns as a means to drive sales numbers. In this way, products are affordable to purchase by the consumer.

Fashion is just one part of what defines a culture. Each area of the world has a different style of dress, and it often portrays the customs of values of the religion, culture or country in question.

Fashion also contributes to a person's confidence and self-esteem on a daily basis. As a way to express personality and style, fashion plays a role in the lives of most people since it helps them fit in or stand out from the crowd.

Fashion also affects people through the media. Media influences choices and feelings towards certain fashion trends, which, in turn, encourages purchasing certain items and specific styles.

The media influences fashion by developing public interest and excitement in the latest styles and trends through the wide publication of glamorous photographs, celebrity endorsements and informative articles. Media acts as a fashion barometer, measuring the high and low points of celebrity styles, indicating the changing fashion elements reflective of the iconic views and lifestyles of relevant popular celebrities, public figures and role models.
