FASHION DECADES 19...Fashion Over the Decades!

A blonde and a brunette have set out to gain poise, educate themselves on current events, and gain an understanding for fashionable outfits pertaining to certain categories. These are just a few of the tasks that are included in preparing for a pageant. While many may think that the measures taken for entering into a beauty pageant are having a beautiful face along with a fancy hairdo, they are completely mistaken. Pageants take months of preparation.Sitting in her bed, Brittany Kuperavage thought about each category that would be included in her upcoming pageant. She knew she had to choose an eye-catching outfit for each, and make sure each was pertaining completely to the category at hand. Saying out loud to herself, “I guess I’ll wear my royal blue dress suit for the interview section, for my onstage question I’ll probably buy that cocktaildress my mom showed me, for evening gown wear I am thinking about my long, black, sparkling evening dress…Yeah that sounds about right.” Later, after a few hours of making decisions final, she would wear her pink solid colored two piece for bathing suit, and her dance dress for talent. She knew each choice would help accent her presentation as a contestant. Brittany’s alarm rang. It was very early. A surge of anxiety ran through her stomach, but in a good way. The kind of way that made her want to jump out of bed and begin getting ready for 8 a.m. start. Brittany began going over several current events in her head while doing her hair. She wanted to be completely ready no matter what the panel of judges would ask her. While putting on her last heel, she headed towards the door just in time to make the first of many

2

interviews. The day continued, she went through a series of interviews, and it was now time for rehearsal. Know-ing where to walk, where to stop and pose, and the dance routine are just a few of the things that Brittany did at rehearsal for pageant night. Becoming a little tired, she knew she had to catch her second wind in order to make it through this long day. After rehearsal, Brittany realized she needed to head to the venue to set up her

spot for getting ready backstage. A sigh of relief gushed out from under her breath; this would be something a little more relaxing than her prior events of the day. It was time for pageant night. Brittany, being the confi-dent young women she is, did not get as nervous as most girls. She knew if she went out there and had a good time, the rest would all fall into place. She could not help but envision herself wearing the crown. After all, she nailed her interviews. Now all she had to do

was nail the categories of the pageant in hopes the crown would be hers. Since then, Kuperavage has gained three more titles, and claimed two first runner-up accomplishments to add to her achievements. In 2006, Brittany earned the title of Snowflake Princess, which was also a Winter Carnival pageant. In 2009, she began competing in Miss America System Pageants, in which she was named Miss Greater Berks County. Following her 2009 win, she was given the opportu-nity to compete in the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant. The pageant took place in Pittsburgh. To her, the week-long competition can be remembered as incredible. Miss Pa consisted of several events that lead up to pageant day itself. Kuperavage said, “We had rehearsals, different

Pageant Girls

events, two nights of pre-lim competitions, the teen’s pageant and then our pageant. The Miss Pa pageant is just like the local pageants I participated in, only with a lot more young women.” After her cherished experience at Miss Pa, Brittany contin-ued to live the pageant life. Placing first runner-up in Miss York County 2011 and Miss Greater Berks County/ Miss Greater Read-ing 2011, she continued to strive for the crown yet again. It was on January 30th at the Miss MidState Pageant 2011 in Harrisburg, that Kuperavage took home yet another crown, gaining her another opportunity to attend the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant. The compe-tition will be held this June, in which she will compete again for the title of Miss Pa, and hopefully bring home the crown and biggest title yet to Schuylkill County. While Kuperavage holds many titles and accomplishments, many people still do not see beyond the beauty of the blonde hair and blue eyed pageant girl. What people do not know is that by doing pageants participants take many different benefits from pageants that can be carried with them through the rest of your life. Kuperavage said, “Some people who don’t know much about them might think they are just like the superficial beauty pageants they see in a movie or on TV.” Pageants extend to much more than that. Aside from scholarship money, in which participants can gain from winning pageants in the Miss America System, these young women can also take with them a strong sense of confidence along with a strong security in poise. One aspect that has helped Brittany tremendously is the practice she has gained in interviews. In the Miss America System, interviews are a huge portion of the compe-tition. When heading to her first medical school interview, she was well prepared and less nervous thanks to her many experiences with interviews in pageants. Even more so, creating connections from the people she has met along the way in pageants and service work, which is required for contestants in the Miss America System, has also benefited Brittany in a positive way. Brunette haired, Abbie Heller, has too been participating in pageants for some time now. While this 22 year old started a little later than Kuperavage, she too has gotten her share of pageants in her young life. Opposite in hair color, the two young women have an unspoken beauty and noticeable poise about themselves. This characteristic of poise is definitely something that has strengthened the two’s success n pageant life. The two young ladies share many characteristics which were gained throughout their pageant careers. Heller and Kuperav-age definitely have a large sense of glitz, glam, and beauty that shines through maybe a little more than your average girl; more importantly, the young women have a strong sense of poise, matu-rity, self-security, interview skills and confidence. These charac-teristics are something that the young women can carry with them in a positive way throughout the rest of their lives. So, to the typical person who likes to label a pageant girl as “fake” or “super-ficial,” truth be told is that these young women are probably a lot more prepared for life’s hardest endeavors than the average person may be… All thanks to their experience in pageants.

Bells Will be RingingBy: Jordyn Howe

Church bells are ringing and it’s almost time to take a walk down the aisle. It is the day that will change the rest of your life. A day so special, that you’ve spent months or even years preparing for it. Soon you will be married to the man of your dreams and your new life will begin. Weddings are a time for new beginnings and happily ever after. For most brides, the wedding day is just as, if not more important than the marriage. The day in the life of a bride can be nerve racking and yet serene. Kelsey Fitzwater and Devon Weed were married on June 5, 2010. Kelsey has given us a personal interview entailing her wedding day, down to every last detail. Devon Weed and Kelsey Fitzwater were high school sweethearts and had been dating for five and a half years before they tied the knot. The young couple of 21 had begun dating while Kelsey was a junior in high school and Devon was a sophomore. They were engaged for two years before they got married. The two have been very much in love since their high school days and their love carried through into later years. Devon proposed to Kelsey while they were on vacation with her family. Kelsey remembers her dad waking her up that morning to go to breakfast with him. When they returned to the hotel room, Kelsey’s younger sister, Haley, told her to look at a large boat that was outside on the ocean. When she walked out onto the balcony, she saw a message in the sand and Devon standing on the beach below. The message read, in huge letters,

, “KELSEY WILL YOU MARRY ME?” At that point, Kelsey was located on the sixth floor of the hotel. “I was in total shock!” states Kelsey. She remembers running into the elevator and “freaking out” the whole way down. Once she was outside, she jumped over the barrier wall that lead to the beach, landed on the cool sand below, and ran straight into the arms of her fiancée. Kelsey commented, “He later said that he wanted to actually ask me but I never gave him the chance!” As a crowd of people gathered on the balconies of the hotel, the newly engaged couple could hear cheering and clapping from the happy spectators. “It was amazing!” she exclaimed. From that moment on, Kelsey could not wait to get married. Kelsey remembers her wedding day as being relatively calm and stated that as the bride; all she was responsible for was showing up. Her mother’s best friend was in charge of picking up the flowers and ensuring that the reception hall was properly decorated. Her fiancée, Devon, also had a relaxing experience on the day of the wedding. He had spent the night at his parents’ house. He woke up on the morning of the wedding to hang out with his friends until it was time to arrive at the church at 12:30. The couple chose to keep with tradition and stay hidden from one another until the ceremony. This meant that the wedding photos that could be taken without the two of them together were snapped before the ceremony took place. These pictures included the couple’s bridal party, which consisted of .......................

close friends and family. Kelsey’s maid of honor was her younger sister Haley and her three brides maids were lifelong friends, Beth and Rachel and cousin Miranda. Devon’s best man was best friend, Jacob and close friends Tyler, Ian, and Mark. The flower girls consisted of Hannah Kendall, Elexis Bastion, and Lydia Wolfe. As the ceremony grew nearer, Kelsey’s nerves began to grow. Kelsey was not nervous about marrying Devon, but was nervous about the possibility of messing up her vows in front of roughly 200 people. A gesture from her adoring fiancée calmed her nerves. She com-mented, “Around 2:00 my bridesmaids handed me flowers that were from my fiancé with a note saying, “I cannot wait to marry you. I’m the luckiest man in the world. I love you”… that really calmed my nerves!” At shortly before 4 p.m., as guests flowed into the small town church, a sense of family and love filled the room. Everyone in the room knew that this couple was destined to be together and that great happiness was in their future. Having been a guest at the wedding and a friend of both the bride and groom, I knew that what I was about to witness would be a significant moment in time. The ceremony was beautiful, but Kelsey said “…it was so hot in the

church. I had sweat running down my legs during the entire ceremony because my dress was so heavy! It made it really hard to stand still up in front of everyone.” It has been almost 10 months since Kelsey and Devon tied the knot and they have loved every single day of their marriage. The couple is currently living in their hometown of Troy, Pa. Kelsey is currently out of college and a full time math at Canton Elementary and a reading tutor W.R. Croman Elementary. Devon is currently attending Mansfield Uni-versity and is majoring in elementary and special education. The couple loves to spend their summers playing on co-ed slow pitch softball teams. Kelsey said, “My favorite part about being married is the security. I know that Devon wants to be with me, and he’s devoted himself to me for the rest of our lives. I feel like our relationship has grown so much stronger and deeper since we got married.” Kelsey is hopeful for the future and would love to get her career in motion and start a family someday. She commented, “I can easily see ourselves 20 years down the road, growing older and having a family.”

HOW TODress for Spring

8

The time has come again, spring! While this beloved season holds favor in many peoples’ hearts above the other three seasons, many women in the US dread spring. This discomfort when the thought of springtime pops into your head is not because the perfectly moderate weather, and subtle sunshine. The discomfort of spring comes from a much deeper, darker place for women… their closet! The confu-sion lies somewhere in between the season of winter and the season of summer. Many women struggle with finding a decent medium between warm winter clothing, and skimpy summer attire. By taking this advice you will feel confident in stepping outside your house and knowing you are dressed fashionably and APPROPRIATELY for the beloved season of spring.

1. Colors, colors, colors! According to the cast on E’s hit show Fashion Police the perfect way to look cute for the season in 2011 is to dress in bright colors. The fashion police themselves believe that using one main bright color for spring can turn eyes towards your trendy outfit!

2. Another very important tip in keeping your style intact for spring is pairing your outfit with a pair of shoes that adds, rather than takes away, from the look you are going for. The only way to ALWAYS have the perfect pair of shoes for your outfit is to expand your choices. 3. The next step is wearing the proper makeup for your look. Makeup artist Lynn Tassanari Wegeil, believes that this season we can use these bright colors without going over the top and scaring people. Since orange is one of the main colors this season Wegeil suggests, "try that pink on your lips and instead of the full-on orange lipstick, try a coral." 4. You probably can guess what the next step is in creating your spring wardrobe. You got it, accessories. We don’t need an expert to tell us that accessories can make or break an outfit.5. Be confident! No matter what color you decide on, or what pair of shoes you will be strutting in that day, make sure you obey the golden rule of womanhood, always be confident in yourself.

HOW TODress for your body type

9

In a world full of hundreds of clothing brands, dierent sizing charts, and shoe measurements it is almost guaranteed that consumers will make a purchase that does not properly t their body type. Fortunately, there are a few easy steps that can guide you to the perfect catch in the sea of endless clothing.

STEP ONE: Know your age and stick to it. Many consumers shop at stores that are not age appro-priate for their body type. When we are young our bodies have smaller inseams and shorter torsos which is why many shirts that are too short for your body may have come from a section of the store that was designated for a younger audience.

STEP TWO: Ask for help! Instead of carrying ten of the same item in dierent sizes into the dress-ing room, just ask a sales associate for help. They are specially trained in the stores sizes and ts and would almost always be happy to give you a hand.

STEP THREE: Make a Responsible Judgment. When trying on clothing and cannot decide between two sizes just think of these helpful reminders to assist you in choosing the best t.

STEP FOUR: If you are still struggling to gure out your best sizes and ts it may be in your best interest to visit My Best Fit. This new and innovative “store” just hit the world of shopping in its rst location at King of Prussia mall in Pennsylvania. This lifesaving machine allows shoppers to enter a glass chamber and have over two hundred measurements of their body taken by a computer system. This system then takes the measurements and compares them to participating store’s size charts. A list of the customer’s best ts is then printed out for their use.

HEALTHBecoming Aware of the Unaware:

CELIAC DISEASE

There are many diseases that are not uncommon for us to hear being talked about by co-workers, friends, family and even strangers in our daily lives. Some of these familiar diseases include Cancer, Heart Disease and AIDS. Although these diseases are often heard of, there are a select few diseases that are not heard of enough to help accommodate those suffering from them. One disease that seems to be becom-ing more prominent in young people is the unusual Celiac Disease. You may be saying to yourself; what is Celiac Disease? What we do not know is that people you may know can be suffering from the illness. Celiac Disease starts with the damag-ing of the small intestine. This occurs due to the inability of the small intestine to absorb foods that contain gluten. This may lead to yet another question; what foods contain gluten? Strangely enough, almost every food eaten daily contains gluten. Some of these foods include candy, sauces, dress-ings, desserts, some types of meat, and most importantly all bread products. Angela Kuperavage, a junior at Leba-non Valley College, is one of these young people suffering from the disease. Diag-nosed just two months ago, Kuperavage has been struggling with stomach problems since sophomore year of high school. “Since I have only been diagnosed with Celiac Disease recently, it has definitely affected

my daily life a lot,” Kuperavage said. “In the beginning it caused me to feel tired much more often because I wasn't getting all of the same nutrients from the foods I was used to eating every day prior to Celiac Disease.” Fatigue is just one of the symptoms that come along with the disease. Kuperavage has dealt with severe stomach pain, nausea, weight loss, and even weakness. Aside from coping with symptoms, adjusting life to a gluten-free diet is yet another thing that those dealing with the disease must conform to. Present day, the only known treatment for Celiac Disease is a gluten-free diet. Thankfully for Kuperavage, Lebanon Valley College has been very helpful in helping her maintain the diet needed to avoid sickness. Kuperavage stated, “I have an internship that I am not on campus for at least three or four days a week. The cafe actually makes my lunch and is always certain to make sure that it is gluten-free for me. The cafe itself has gluten free wraps which I know is a favorite for me because I am huge wrap fan. Every-day there is something offered for people trying to stay gluten-free and you will know what it is by seeing the "G" symbol next to the item.” Although things remain relatively easy for Kuperavage to maintain her diet at col-lege, a student at Elizabethtown College does not have the same ease in doing so. Senior, Justin Warner, is also struggling with

12

Celiac Disease. Diagnosed at age 14, Warner found it very difficult when he came to school at Elizabethtown. Warner spoke dissatisfaction in the school’s assistance, “I find myself eating the same things almost every day that I go to the cafeteria,” Warner said. “My diet here at school usually consists of grilled chicken or a turkey burger, and salad with oil and vinegar.”What Warner does not know, that students struggling with dietary food problems can sit down and have a meeting with the Elizabeth-town College dining staff. Celiac students explain their problem, and the staff makes the accommodations needed for the students to be able to eat several different meals. They even have a special toaster, bread, and pastas in the back of the cafeteria from which students may go back and prepare, or ask the chef to prepare a meal for them. According to Charles Downs Jr., Residen-tial Dining Chef and Production Manager Eliza-bethtown College has been dealing with students with Celiac disease for a few years now. One semester up to five students had Celiac that they knew of. Some students do not realize the flexibility of the dining staff at Elizabethtown, along with the accommoda-tions that can be made. “We bring the students through and show them everything, and then they educate themselves about everything,” Downs said. It is important that the students know of a special recipe book they can look at which contains all the ingredients to each meal for the day. This way, students know whether they need something to be specially made, or if they can eat the featured meal. While Lebanon Valley College does a great job of producing the food in quantities, Downs said, “it gets a little too expensive to do so at Elizabethtown.” The number of kids that the dining staff is aware of suffering from the disease is always so fickle, so the staff decides to buy pastas, special oil, and other gluten-free products in smaller quantities.

Many people with Celiac Disease are struggling to adapt to remaining gluten-free. With the unawareness of what the disease is, choices on menus, in cafeterias, and even in grocery stores remain limited for those suffering. In order for this to change, it is important for the awareness of the disease to be raised immediately to assist those who cannot lead a normal life because of naivety to the disease itself. According to Kuperavage, “I definitely think the area needs to become more Celiac friendly with the disease being on the rise, not to sound bias because I have it. I think all restaurants should have a small area that is gluten-free. That does not mean that I think they need to focus on those food areas, but I think it would be a good idea. Even if the disease was not on the rise, our area and America in general should be focusing on becoming a healthier place considering the percentages of over-weight people. Allowing some gluten-free options will help those people with Celiac as well as give healthier options for the popula-tion.”Unfortunately, our population still remains very uninformed of what the disease actually is. Jason Albon, a 24 year resident of Saint Clair, Pa, had heard of the disease but was com-pletely unaware of what Celiac entailed. “I feel like I should know what it is because I have heard of it more and more,” Albon said. “I believe they cannot eat certain foods but I have no idea what those foods include. Kuperavage believes that keeping the strict Celiac diet interrupts their daily lives, and assistance is needed. “It has caused me to take extra time out of my day to read labels when necessary, plan out what I am going to take to work for lunch days ahead of time, and simply being aware of what will make me sick and what won't.”

13

What’s Eating You?“Does this make me look fat?”“I wish my body didn’t look like this.” “No one will ever like me because I’m so fat and ugly.” Have you ever heard a stranger, a friend, a family member or even yourself say any of these statements? Eating disorders can happen to anyone. According to the National Eating Disorders Association there are over 10 million woman and 1 million men battling for their lives because of eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia are the two most common eating disorders in people today. Not only are anorexia and bulimia extreme problems, but millions are also struggling with a binge eating disorder. Extreme attitudes, emo-tions, behavior and stress can be contributed to food and weight loss issues. Anorexia is one of the more serious disor-ders. It is characterized by self starvation and excessive weight loss which is extremely life threatening. Bulimia is also extremely serious and life threatening. It is characterized by a cycle of binge eating

followed by self-induced vom-iting to undo the effects of binge eating. After binge eating many people are prone to take laxatives as well. They do whatever they can to make sure they do not gain weight and lose as much as possible. Lauren Wuzzardo a senior from Villanova Univer-sity said, “It’s unbelievable how many people you would look at and never realize they have a serious problem with their weight and body image. It’s sad really because we are at an age now where we need to be confident in how we look and in ourselves. Some people struggle daily to even just look in the mirror.” Your friends or family could be struggling with an eating disorder and you may never even know. A cheer-leader, dancer, track and cross country runner and an A+ student, Jenna Dowen, a junior at Lebanon Valley College has struggled with anorexia since her sophomore year in high school. Her friends and family could see there was a severe problem with her lack of eating and rapid weight loss right away. They questioned her

Your friends or family could be struggling with an eating disorder and you may never even know. A cheerleader, dancer, track and cross coun-try runner and an A+ student, Jenna Dowen, a junior at Lebanon Valley College has struggled with anorexia since her sophomore year in high school. Her friends and family could see there was a severe problem with her lack of eating and rapid weight loss right away. They ques-tioned her time after time and she refused to admit she had a problem. Jenna said, “Through-out grade school there were many small signs that had caused concern about my developing an eating disorder. However, they were small phases I went through and I figured they were associated to my OCD.” OCD can be one of the main causes of eating disorders because it is an obsessive compulsive disorder. OCD, the anxiety and controlling disorder, can cause people to have behav-iors that make them feel driven to do something.

14

Dowen said, “The summer before I started my junior year of high school something triggered in my mind and I began comparing my body type to everyone around me. I started eating less and exercis-ing more. I would not allow myself to enjoy snacks and ‘bad’ foods I used to enjoy and felt like I made a huge accom-plishment if I succeeded in doing so. At the end of the summer cross country started so my exercise increased and I forced my eating to in turn decrease.” Once cross country started and school was back in session Jenna’s mom would not take no for an answer and she finally admitted she had a problem. The reason it took Jenna so long to admit she had a problem was because she did not believe she had a problem herself. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Jenna said, “I finally realized that I had a problem when I was thinking about what I was allowed to eat that day during class time instead of focusing my atten-tion on the teacher.” Eating disorders can take over every thought you have. Your mind only allows yourself to think about what you can and cannot eat and how much you should work out during that day. Downen spoke of how often she would think about howe

often she would think about how she could lose more weight and starve herself. “Thoughts of losing weight were on my mind constantly and I was beginning to not even experience the feeling of hunger anymore. This is when I decided to tell my mom what was going on and she immedi-ately scheduled me to visit an eating disorder clinic in Her-shey.” “The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was getting through treatment,” Jenna said. “I ended up having to be par-tially hospitalized for a month at Briarcrest (the eating disor-der clinic), hospitalized in the child psych ward at Hershey hospital for another month, and then placed back in partial hospitalization for about another month and a half.” Three and a half months Jenna was away from her life. She did not have the normal high school experience for quite some time while she was hos-pitalized. “During treatment I went through the motions I was instructed to go through, but on my own time I com-pletely reverted back into my eating disorder. Everything I did was a challenge to sneak behind the doctors’ backs and make them believe I was doing what I was supposed to do so that I could go home and pursue my eating disorder further. I didn’t want to get

Jenna said, “I definitely think that the media made things worse for me when strug-gling with thoughts of weight loss and food restriction. The media pushes so many thoughts in your head of what the perfect body should look like. It convinces you that if you do not look that way then you are fat, ugly, and not worth it.” Jenna who was already a tiny frame and a healthy girl let the media convince her to believe oth-erwise. “There is way too much focus on weight and body types in this world and it keeps getting worse. It is mentioned in movies, maga-zines, and TV in such a blunt and heartless way which puts ideas of dieting, using pills, over exercising and other extremes into many individual’s heads.” It would be better if the media would focus on what is really important and not place a large focus on body image.
